The Dead Places: The Visual Delicacy of DecayIt’s easy to think of art in terms of what is instantly pleasing to the eye, of that which evokes a feeling of joy and hopefulness and blissful peacefulness or ecstatic exultation. This is the consideration of art as something that helps propel us forward through life – to out future great deeds, our career victories, or dreams of coming big events. But there is a peak to every life. At some point all people, and all places, and even all ideas have to begin the inevitable decline that is the other balancing half of a lifetime. The Dead Places: The Visual Delicacy of Decay in deviantART Blog More Like This

Alice X. Z. - Living Rainbow Taking FlightThe vibrant digital paintings of `alicexz are fiery, emotional, and incredibly memorable. The colors of her creations (mostly portraits of popular TV and Film characters) are unusually vibrant, which is remarkable considering how layered they appear to be. It’s sort of like what manga characters might look like if painted by one of the Dutch Masters. And this artist exhibits just the right amount of quirkiness to leave us wanting to know more: she has a penchant for painting redheads. But, then of course, there’s a lot of red and golden fire burning through most her artworks.Alice X. Z. - Living Rainbow Taking Flight in deviantART Blog More Like This

Humans Becoming Robots, Robots Becoming HumanOn March 1, 2012 the Nevada DMV issued the first license for a “Google Driverless Car.” The idea behind this innovation is that one day soon new technology will drive cars safer and more skillfully than humans, thus saving lives and billions of dollars in car crashes. How well this idea catches on is a bit questionable, given the powerful “romance” of driving one’s car, but it’s certainly an indicator of things to come in the daily intersection of human and artificial intelligence and mobility. There have always been those who have dreamed of stepping into a mechanical exo-skeletal-type “suit” and letting the engineering do the work, instantly increasing limited human speed, strength, endurance and accuracy.Humans Becoming Robots, Robots Becoming Human in deviantART Blog More Like This

"If you could have any super power, what would it be?" I think it's a question we all have to answer at some point. We're innately curious about the unknown and enjoy diving into the depths of imagination. We know it's not possible, but we can't shake the question of, "What if?"
I don't think my answer has changed since I was asked as a child. I never saw much need for invisibility. I don't think I would enjoy being a mind reader. And sure, shooting laser beams out of my hands would be fun, but there's something that I've always been drawn to more.
I would like to fly.
To me, flight represents freedom. It's the ability to travel around without borders, coming and going as you please. I initially associate it with being closer to nature, as well, somethin

Fanart Used to Save CommunityI enjoy the TV show Community. A lot. However, what I enjoy most about this show is the story and, well, community behind it. Last year, NBC announced Community would be put on hiatus for an unspecified amount of time, causing an outrage in the show's fan base. Once the announcement was made, fans took to social media to complain. This is a relatively normal response in this day and age, but strangely enough, the outrage didn't wane. In fact, it only strengthened as the final episode for the mid-season approached, and the looming uncertainty as to the show's fate became a reality.
Flash mobs were formed. Targeted campaigns were organized to urge Community's advertisers to continue support for the show. And, most relevant of

What do we need to shoot a Street picture?
1. A camera
Whatever kind of a camera is good. Either it is a ridiculously expensive rangefinder or an unbelievably cheap point and shoot compact. Either it shoots digital or it shoots film. Either it weighs a ton or it weighs few grams. ANY camera is fine as long as you have it with you.
2. A public place
This can be out in the streets or at the beach or inside a hotel's lounge or in a diner place or inside a supermarket or a mall or a school or whatever PUBLIC place. This public place must be visible in our picture. And things must be happening in this public place.
3. People
Exactly, people! We need people in candid situations. Definition of "candid" from Merriam-Webster's online dictionary: "subjects acting naturally or spontaneously without being posed" Definition of "candid" from Wikipedia: Candid photography is best described as un-

Defining Street Photography
by Dave Beckerman
Most types of photography can be easily defined by their subjects. A wedding photographer takes pictures of weddings. A portrait photographer poses someone and takes their picture. The nature photographer covers a wide area, but it is easy to categorize.
Street photography is difficult to define because it can encompass just about any subject.
If I were to ask you to name a few famous street photographers, you might pick, Garry Winnograd, Henri Cartier-Bresson, or maybe Robert Frank. But if I asked you to define street photography – that would be more difficult. You might say that street photography is candid pictures of strangers on the street. That might be a good start, but it doesn’t really describe street photography.
To start with, street photography doesn’t need to be done on

It was Market Day in Wells, and I was sitting outside the Pasty Shop, one of my 'hides', having a quad-shot espresso, and chatting to a friend, when across the road, I noticed this pregnant lady at the ATM, she was glowing. I waited for her to turn around after getting her cash, just as she did, another lady, also pregnant, walked passed her, they recognised each other and began to talk, both were excited. It was then I took the shot. The lady on the left was asked by the other lady, "When's it due?" She replied "They say the 4th. of August, but I feel it might come sooner."

White Roses for an Eternal BondThere is a song, White Rose of Athens, sung by Nana Mouskouri, and with its haunting lyrics, it was one of my mother's favorites. But I sent it on my birthday. In my early twenties, I came to the realization that my birthday was not only about me being born on that day. The Timeless Code of the Eternal OutsiderWhy Drive will be the movie that is remembered in years to come. Film Noir is a genre of “life in the shadows” movies that became popular in America during the uncertain times of World War II. Westerns have remained a shorthand for the American psyche with their sullen outsiders with a personal code of honor bucking the system. Samurai films mirror the lone avenger protagonist, but set against a longing for a lost society of incorruptible values. Now and again a notable contemporary noir or western or samurai film emerges with little fanfare amidst all the commercial cacophony of the louder, bolder, more spectacular action films that rule today’s box office. One such gem of film blending all three genres flashed out of the shadows briefly in 2011. It’s called “Drive” and I think it is the greatest artistic achievement of the past year. The Timeless Code of the Eternal Outsider in Personal More Like This

Fair Exposure increases the probability that someone will see something that they personally like in Popular results. In short, with Fair Exposure, the community is exposed to a varied cross-section of deviantART. It uses an algorithm that is "fair" in nature -- meaning not biased toward any topic, yet still based on popularity. Why is Fair Exposure n

Every time we open our eyes in the morning as each new day breaks, two worlds flow forth, each penetrating into the other, as the celestial portal gate separating them is once again raised. One’s inner world, of mind and being, pierces the outer world of light and raw data, seeking to hunt and gather mental sustenance. The outer world floods into our minds like a data tsunami, seeking to reconfigure the secret landscape of last night’s perfectly crafted dream state. Both worlds do battle to rearrange and make sense of the other. It is the yin and yang, by which we create and recreate the world – and the world invades and recreates each one of

Perhaps the eternally unanswerable question.
But definitely something to chew on...
When I first saw it, I was instantly captivated.
At first thought...
...what a brilliant example of modern pointillism! Has some unknown artist taken up the long abandoned banner of Georges
Seurat and presented us with a new manifesto championing art as points of light illuminating our waking dreams?!
OK, I see now it’s not a painting at all, so my pointillism exuberance is dashed. It’s more likely one of those photo collages
with thousands of small images being arranged to create a larger picture. That’s cool. So what’s the picture?
If I stare intently long enough, will it suddenly “emerge,” like the ones they sell on the Venice Beach Boardwalk?

Two weeks ago, we released comment counts under thumbnail images to Beta Testers. Today, the feature has been rolled out to everyone. We believe that this feature adds more context to the experience of viewing artwork on deviantART. You'll now find comment counts underneath the thumbnails of deviations -- they can be seen when browsing or searching art, and also display in your Message Center. This change is a little different, since it involves a feature that has been in place for a long time. We think it deserves an announcement of its own, ahead of time.
The current deviantART thumbnails (the smaller versions of deviations) have served the community well for years; however, there's always room for improvement.
Some of the problems with existing thumbnails are: they leave a lot of blank space around them, there isn't a lot of room for text for literature deviations, and the thumbnails don't present very tall/wide images well.
The New Thumbnails
Now, we've created a new style of thumbnail, which hopes to solve a lot of these problems.

I still to this day don't talk with her that much. HOWEVER, from the little interaction I've had with her I can see she's not only an incredible photographer, but also a very easy going person, different from the rest. Maybe because I'm not a photographer and I tend to think photographers are more "serious" than cartoonists, or maybe because unconsciously I feel intimidated by the quality of her work, but it surprised me to see how down to earth she is, fun and weird (in the best way possible). What I like about Rulo's work is how fresh it is, there's always so many dynamism in his illustrations, a sense of movement and speed, which I think many of you will agree, are difficult to achieve, however Rulo makes it look like a piece of cake. I also love how his lines are never perfect, his colors are not blinding bright and the characters aren't impossibly beautiful. His work doesn't look artificial or over planned.

I remember that at that time she used to create her drawings using MS Paint, literally with only the circle and line tools. Her drawings were so cute! and made in a very creative way given the limitations of the program. However years have passed since that and today I can say she's one of those artists I've seen grow and develope their own style.
She moved from MS Paint to more complete design programs and with that, her style also matured, however the same feeling and essence is still present. She may not be as skilled as the most famous illustrators around and her creations may not be as detailed as the most impressive digital paintings, but there is something about her drawings that is full of emotion, of soul, which at the end of the day I think is what makes a great piece of art.

And designing every day.
The drawing usually leads to the designing. Or vice versa.
The photos are just something I can't help. If I miss a shot, but see the photograph that could have been, I get kinda depressed about it. So I just take photos to avoid that feeling. I miss a lot of photos anyway. But I try to remind myself that those were photos just for me. And that's a nice feeling when you can see photos that someone else will never see. Really incredible things happen all around, all the time, so long as you're looking for it. I got so many inspiring and heart-warming Notes from deviants far and wide -- from those who had just donated to those who had no means to donate monetarily but who happily spread the word to others. Many even selflessly pledged their own birthdays, asking for donations to this great cause in lieu of gifts. In a world where a lot of the news headlines are depressing and bleak, my faith in the power of good and caring was restored by the deviantART community.
Some say that one should participate in charity for charity's sake, and I fully believe this.
Need Input for Message Center RevampIn the deviantWATCH, we would like to switch to Feeds vs. Messages you have to "X" away one by one.Need Input for Message Center Revamp in Tech & Features More Like This
Now, I could use a wide net of input for message center revamp, but really I'd like to start with a narrow view of just deviantWATCH.
The deviantWATCH lives within Messages, which contains within it Feedback, Notices, etc. as well. deviantWATCH messages come in like crazy in your message center once you are watching 20+ people. And of the folks reading my Journal, I know you guys tend to have over 100+ people that you +WATCH.
Help me understand something. Because if we go off and make changes, we're going to have a riot on our hands. And no one needs that kind of sadness in their lives:
Why can't we switch to feeds?
Feeds would effectively index YOUR deviantWATCH in to deviantART's search engine, so your deviantWATCH Deviations would have all of the filters and capabilities of the home page. Categories, Newest, Most Popular 24 hours, 1 week, 1 month, etc. BUT a

This means that errors can and likely will occur until the coding is complete, your patience and understanding is appreciated![]()
The following guideline changes are in effect:The 3-month rule is now the 6-month rule, meaning that it must be at least 6-months since the last time an artist received a daily deviation. (This was an overwhelmingly popular suggestion from the community and I agree, it's a good one!)
