The Dead Places: The Visual Delicacy of DecayIt’s easy to think of art in terms of what is instantly pleasing to the eye, of that which evokes a feeling of joy and hopefulness and blissful peacefulness or ecstatic exultation. This is the consideration of art as something that helps propel us forward through life – to out future great deeds, our career victories, or dreams of coming big events. But there is a peak to every life. At some point all people, and all places, and even all ideas have to begin the inevitable decline that is the other balancing half of a lifetime. The Dead Places: The Visual Delicacy of Decay in deviantART Blog More Like This

Earth Day: The Inspiration of the Natural WorldSince human beings harnessed the secret of fire the natural world has been seen by many only in terms of how best it can be exploited of its abundant riches. It’s amazing now to look upon the desert sands of the Arab lands and know that this place, the cradle of earliest civilization, was once known as “The Fertile Crescent.” All Europe was once one great forest – until all those trees were needed to create the naval armadas of dueling empires. Alice X. Z. - Living Rainbow Taking FlightThe vibrant digital paintings of `alicexz are fiery, emotional, and incredibly memorable. The colors of her creations (mostly portraits of popular TV and Film characters) are unusually vibrant, which is remarkable considering how layered they appear to be. It’s sort of like what manga characters might look like if painted by one of the Dutch Masters. And this artist exhibits just the right amount of quirkiness to leave us wanting to know more: she has a penchant for painting redheads. But, then of course, there’s a lot of red and golden fire burning through most her artworks.Alice X. Z. - Living Rainbow Taking Flight in deviantART Blog More Like This

Now it’s exploded beyond the secure borders of top news publications, gaming and entertainment websites.

1. A camera
Whatever kind of a camera is good. Either it is a ridiculously expensive rangefinder or an unbelievably cheap point and shoot compact. Either it shoots digital or it shoots film. Either it weighs a ton or it weighs few grams. ANY camera is fine as long as you have it with you.
2. A public place
This can be out in the streets or at the beach or inside a hotel's lounge or in a diner place or inside a supermarket or a mall or a school or whatever PUBLIC place. This public place must be visible in our picture. And things must be happening in this public place.
3. People

by :iconearthhart:
It was Market Day in Wells, and I was sitting outside the Pasty Shop, one of my 'hides', having a quad-shot espresso, and chatting to a friend, when across the road, I noticed this pregnant lady at the ATM, she was glowing. I waited for her to turn around after getting her cash, just as she did, another lady, also pregnant, walked passed her, they recognised each other and began to talk, both were excited. It was then I took the shot. The lady on the left was asked by the other lady, "When's it due?" She replied "They say the 4th. of August, but I feel it might come sooner."
I had to wait to see the shot as I don't process film, so a week later, having the roll put on CD I saw it for the firs

Since the age of five years, I made pictures with the camera of my father, then in the 60's with my own cameras. But in 1970, I really started to photograph in my suburban and especially in the streets of Paris. 1972 was photographically an important year for me. At that time, my camera was an Asahi Pentax Spotmatic, perhaps the finest ever built apparieil. I worked as a typographer in a small print of the Latin Quarter. Behind the Pantheon, there is a place, the Place de la Contrescarpe, very old and which was the meeting place of all the tramps. This is where this photo was taken. Defining Street Photography
by Dave Beckerman
Most types of photography can be easily defined by their subjects. A wedding photographer takes pictures of weddings. A portrait photographer poses someone and takes their picture. The nature photographer covers a wide area, but it is easy to categorize.
Street photography is difficult to define because it can encompass just about any subject.
If I were to ask you to name a few famous street photographers, you might pick, Garry Winnograd, Henri Cartier-Bresson, or maybe Robert Frank. But if I asked you to define street photography – that would be more difficult. You might say that street photography is candid pictures of strangers on the street. That might be a good start, but it doesn’t really describe street photography.
To start with, street photography doesn’t need to be done on

The Timeless Code of the Eternal OutsiderWhy Drive will be the movie that is remembered in years to come. Film Noir is a genre of “life in the shadows” movies that became popular in America during the uncertain times of World War II. Westerns have remained a shorthand for the American psyche with their sullen outsiders with a personal code of honor bucking the system. Samurai films mirror the lone avenger protagonist, but set against a longing for a lost society of incorruptible values. Now and again a notable contemporary noir or western or samurai film emerges with little fanfare amidst all the commercial cacophony of the louder, bolder, more spectacular action films that rule today’s box office. One such gem of film blending all three genres flashed out of the shadows briefly in 2011. It’s called “Drive” and I think it is the greatest artistic achievement of the past year. The Timeless Code of the Eternal Outsider in Personal More Like This
Art in Contemplation of Its Own BecomingDuchamp finds a discarded urinal. He alters it (by signing a name to it not even his own, but obviously “the artist’s”) and names it “The Fountain”. The most mundane, even off-putting, of objects is transformed by Duchamp into art. He submits it for exhibition and it is rejected. You might say the judges “pissed on” his idea. But the idea was born and persisted. Every time we open our eyes in the morning as each new day breaks, two worlds flow forth, each penetrating into the other, as the celestial portal gate separating them is once again raised. One’s inner world, of mind and being, pierces the outer world of light and raw data, seeking to hunt and gather mental sustenance. The outer world floods into our minds like a data tsunami, seeking to reconfigure the secret landscape of last night’s perfectly crafted dream state. Both worlds do battle to rearrange and make sense of the other. It is the yin and yang, by which we create and recreate the world – and the world invades and recreates each one of

I don't think my answer has changed since I was asked as a child. I never saw much need for invisibility. I don't think I would enjoy being a mind reader. And sure, shooting laser beams out of my hands would be fun, but there's something that I've always been drawn to more.
I would like to fly.
To me, flight represents freedom. It's the ability to travel around without borders, coming and going as you please. I initially associate it with being closer to nature, as well, somethin

Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera. That is the moment the photographer is creative. Oop! The Moment! Once you miss it, it is gone forever."
However, Henri Cartier-Bresson didn't only take one single photograph when he saw a decisive moment ready to happen (David Hurn refers to this as a "pregnant moment") but rather took several images of the same scene.
That truth is reinforced by the fact that "Gare" is one of only two photographs I know of that Cartier-Bresson cropped. There was a fence off to the left, and he didn't have time to move to the right before it was time to shoot.
You can see the original, un-cropped version in his book, Henri Cartier Bresson: Scrapbook.
If you look carefully at the masters work like Cartier-Bresson, Elliott Erwitt, or

Started out as a taxi driver and saw so many things on the streets that he kept saying "If only I had a camera…" A camera seemed like the only way to capture the crazy stuff which was happening almost every night.
Claims that the 70's were more interesting than the 80's, but in December 1984 bought a competitive camera, an AE-1 and a 50mm lens.
Started out in color film, but one year after he turned to b/w, because color was tricky to develop.
Thinks that failure is important, and that failing over 99% of the time and not giving up is something to be proud of. Takes "awful pictures on a daily basis and always will. There aren't too many other types of photography where that's the expected result."
Suffered from the photographic equivalent of "Writer's Block" for many years and it would be the crazy decision to spend most of my savings on a pair of M6′s and a few lenses that helped him to comeback. "The 28mm & 35mm lenses are the perfec
Ruth OrkinOrkin grew up in Hollywood where her mother was a silent-film actress and in 1939 she studied photojournalism. At the age of 10 she received her first camera, a 39 cent Univex, and two years later Orkin began to develop her photographs herself, and when she was eighteen she made national headlines when she rode a bicycle from Los Angeles to New York for the 1939 World's Fair. In 1943 she moved to New York and began working as a nightclub photographerand shot baby pictures by day to buy her first professional camera.

Orkin is best known for her naturalistic urban portrayals of Europeans and New Yorkers in the '40s, '50s and '60s, and for a series of photos she took from her New York City apartment with a view of Central Park (A World Through My Window, 1978 and More Pictures

Yes, today I bring you Joe Wigfall.
He shoots hundreds of photos during his lunch hour or walking to the train after work, in New York. And this is how he influences me: no excuses not to!
He was always drawn by the streets, first drawing, and then shooting. Started shooting informally as a teen with a Kodak Instamatic.
Has bachelors degree in Fine Arts from NYU, but the vast majority of his "photography training comes from "STIP", the Self-Taught Institute of Photography".

Always loved the light and shadows game, thinking about it like how he used to develop film and what worked. Search for interesting characters and watch for scenes to unfold, from the beginning.
Shoot with a Nikon D40 and D300s and usually brings a 17-55mm 2.8f and a 50mm 1.4f or a 35mm 1.8f.
What he loves most is "the moments that happen so fast my finger hits the shutter before my brain tells me to. It's like you can't believe your eyes and what's happening in front of them."
About shooting, he says "get close to people".
About editing he takes his time and look at my images over and over

This one is not the case, because I'm talking about Saul Leiter.
He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, his father was a well known Talmud scholar and Saul studied to become a Rabbi. At age 23, he left theology school and moved to New York City to become an artist. He had developed an early interest in painting, like so many photographers. His mother gave him his first camera, a Detrola camera, when he was 12 years old.
He was soon taking black and white pictures with a 35 mm Leica, which he acquired by exchanging a few Eugene Smith (exceptional photographer from Life magazine, among others) prints for it. By 1948 he began to ex
Aspect Ratio, Composition, Present and FuturePhotography is simply a technology that allows you to record a moment in time, in a box that simply captures a moment of light. Simple and basic as that, no myth there.Aspect Ratio, Composition, Present and Future in Photography More Like This
But the decision on how to capture that moment and its variables like composition, time and subject matter remain in the hands of photographer.
Let's talk about that box, how it affects composition, and the time we live in. Photographic technology has developed at a rapid pace. Without going through the discussion of telezoom vs prime lens, let’s just keep in mind that street photography is all about narrative. To have narrative, to tell a story, you have to be near the main character(s) in order to put the viewer in the same place. And if you’re documenting a time and a place your images should look precisely like that.
Like if you were there.
And that’s why the photos you like from the “Master of Photography” look so real (leaving lots of aspects aside, of course): the focal length. The 35mm look more real, put you right there even if with some distortion, but 50mm is close enough too, and without disturbing the scenery and providing enough set for your characters.
Of course there’s always the discussion of the crop factor (Canon’s 1,6x sensor will turn a 50mm lens into a 80mm and Nikon and most brands 1,5x sensor into a 75mm, and so on...), but you’re documenting ou

This Journal is an Editorial, general one.
Lots of words, few pixels. But, if your bare with me it will (probably) make sense.
Long is the list of Journals and notes about street photography, definitions, tendencies, and all that philosophy that comes with the genre we came to love.
But, as a community, street photographers are in part forgetting to go through the ABC periodically, so that newcomers and enthusiasts can feel comfortable and empowered to taste this misunderstood part of photography.
So, with a surprise unveiled somewhere below, let’s start going through the ABC (I’ll be needing your important input as comment too), like that part in the end of the camera’s user guide: “Camera doesn’t shot>Turn it on; Camera doesn’t work>Check your batteries for charge.”

Street Photography: To Lo And Behold!Street Photography Quiz:Street Photography: To Lo And Behold! in Photography More Like This
When was the last time a random passenger in a bus made your jaw drop?
Happens with me all the time!
Whenever I go out into the streets, I never plan on what I'm going to shoot, nor do I have a particular theme in mind.
Mind you, planning ahead is highly benefical to a Street Photographer or any photographer for that matter - a practice that almost always yeilds excellent results when properly utilized.
For me, it's just the sheer excitment of stepping into a vast concrete jungle, unsure about what's around the next corner, or perceiving an event that is about to unfold before you, the sound of your heart beating as you walk/run towards the developing scene - all the while hoping that you get there in time to take... that one shot, that ultimate payoff; is all that matters.
Sometimes you could be standing there observing a street scene when you begin to notice things falling into place; a photo opportunity forming right before your very eyes.

Non-People Street can be a touchy subject for some 'purists'.
I remember back when I had just started working on #TheStreetFactor
and was toying with the idea to include a Non-People Street folder in the gallery.
I was chatting with a good friend of mine, who also happens to be a brilliant Street Photographer.
He found the whole concept absurd:
My purist friend: Non-Human Street?! That's absurd!
Me: How so?
My purist friend: You CANNOT photograph buildings and objects in candid situations for one.
A Street shot without people isn't really considered as Street Photography.
Me: What about HCB? He did a lot of Non-People Street too.
(I didn't know much about Bresson back then; I was only taking a blind shot in the dark...)
My purist friend: Well, yeah...
Me: Aha!.

The Poetry of Street PhotographyStreet PhotographyThe Poetry of Street Photography in Photography More Like This
Street photography is a lot like writing poetry.
Poetry, as you know, can be emotional, insightful, nonsensical and even outright hilarious.
The same can also be demonstrated through Street photography.
When I'm out on the streets, I always try to visually 'rhyme'
the scene before my eye has even reached camera's viewfinder.
I do the same when I'm selecting images to feature in my humble journals.
Finding poetry in your surroundings is tantamount to successful
Street Photography.
But that's just my opinion.
So before feasting your eyes on the scrumptious assortment of Street delights presented for your
viewing pleasure, please take a while to ponder and of course,

I have a plan; and in order for that plan to work, I'll be needing your help.
The concept is quite simple really.
What I need you all to do is share your thoughts and your own philosophies regarding what you consider as Street Photography, in the comment box below.
Feel free to monologue, debate, rant, harangue, borrow quotes from the masters or even pick a few references from that popular Wikipedia page about Street Photography if it helps.
You don't have to be a Street Photographer to join in the discussion, but having a bit of know how on the subject will ensure smooth and successful turns in conversation.
Please note that this is your show, and I'm merely a silent observer. Though I may pop in mid-conversation should the urge to needlessly interfere overwhelm me, ha!

What amazes me about the Street Photographs featured in this journal, is how they seem so alike in appearance, but at the same time, they are so vastly different in concept, theme and/or execution.
As we welcome another year of promoting Street, it gives me immense pleasure in presenting a selection of absolutely brilliant works that will make you stand back and really appreciate how these Artists, despite being worlds apart, still respond to and capture their environments in such a way that if you didn't know better, you'd be convinced that the images displayed below were taken by the same person.

Recently, I announced changes to Daily Deviations in this journal and I'm happy to say that the response has been favorable. To review, we have made the following changes:
a> The "3-month rule" is now the "6-month rule" meaning an artist cannot receive another DD if they have had one in the last 6 months.
b> Daily Deviation selectors are limited to a maximum of one selection per day. This has been put in place to focus on quality vs quantity.
The hard-coding of these new guidelines is now in place (special thanks to $ZombieCoder for that).
These changes are part of an ongoing initiative to better our Dai

This means that errors can and likely will occur until the coding is complete, your patience and understanding is appreciated![]()
The following guideline changes are in effect:The 3-month rule is now the 6-month rule, meaning that it must be at least 6-months since the last time an artist received a daily deviation. (This was an overwhelmingly popular suggestion from the community and I agree, it's a good one!)
Daily deviation selectors may only select one daily deviation per day maximum. This has been put in place to focus on Quality vs Quantity.

This change is a little different, since it involves a feature that has been in place for a long time. We think it deserves an announcement of its own, ahead of time.
The current deviantART thumbnails (the smaller versions of deviations) have served the community well for years; however, there's always room for improvement.
Some of the problems with existing thumbnails are: they leave a lot of blank space around them, there isn't a lot of room for text for literature deviations, and the thumbnails don't present very tall/wide images well.
The New Thumbnails
Now, we've created a new style of thumbnail, which hopes to solve a lot of these problems.
We've made all thumbnails bigger! We're showing them in tidier row

Comment Counts Under Thumbnail Images
Two weeks ago, we released comment counts under thumbnail images to Beta Testers. Today, the feature has been rolled out to everyone. You'll now find comment counts underneath the thumbnails of deviations -- they can be seen when browsing or searching art, and also display in your Message Center. How Malware Works Via Banner Ads
As many deviants know, deviantART has been working hard to combat malicious banner ads that infiltrate
our advertising network, and we've previously addressed this issue in
April 2011
and August 2011.
In our ongoing effort to keep the deviantART community safe, we wanted to share the following
USA Today-produced
video that explains how malicious ads inundate the Web.

Update: Fair Exposure and Popular BrowseUpdate: Fair Exposure and Popular Browse in deviantART Blog More Like ThisFair Exposure and miscategorization
On January 24th, 2012, we released an #hq journal regarding Popular results for Browse. In this journal, we described Fair Exposure -- deviantART's algorithm for Popular browse results. Fair Exposure's goal is to showcase the most popular deviations in a variety of styles, genres, and art forms, without bias towards a particular topic.
Since the release of our Fair Exposure announcement, especially in the last handful of weeks, we've noticed a concerted, dedicated effort made by deviants, or groups of deviants, to specifically beat (or "game") the system. Deviations have been intentionally miscategorized in hopes of having them appear "higher" in Popular results. This has, rightfully so, resulted in complaints from deviants who submit to deviantART in a fair and honest manner.![]()
All deviants can now write CritiquesAll deviants can now write Critiques in deviantART Blog More Like ThisBe a giver!
Sometimes you come across a deviation that deserves special attention. It catches your eye in such a way that you're compelled to craft a response that goes above and beyond a normal comment. Or perhaps a fellow deviant is having a tough time with a particular aspect of their work, and you know just what they need to take their art to the next level. As a good Internet citizen and art enthusiast, you want to help them out, but a normal comment doesn't quite suit your purpose.
For these situations and more, we've given everyone the ability to write a Critique. What is Critique?
DeviantART's Critique system is designed to help artists get in-depth, critical feedback and commentary on their work. Valued feedback through Critique promotes creative growth as an artist and draws special attention to work. Critiques are also a way for committed art enthusiasts, connoisseurs, and fans to publish real criticism,
