Fantastic Fractalicious Fractals issue 14The first issue of this year! This time I want to present some of the coolest fractals from 2011, it was really difficult to pick out some faves of the year, you are too good!!! But first, a short resume of last year's happenings.Fantastic Fractalicious Fractals issue 14 in Personal More Like This

FFF series issue 13You wonder what's with the weird title? Yep, I thought I should submit with sta.sh instead of my journal, and of course, it was the famous 30 character limit again. Nevermind, I've heard that it will change soon. I'm back again with the series. And from now on, the series will come out semimonthly instead of each week. It gives me more time to dig up new goodies and collect resources and news. And you'll not be tired of the squirrel and her instant chattering. Isolating Structures In MB3DHow to clean up your image background ~Isolating Structures In MB3D in Personal More Like This
Wow. I haven't done a journal in ages. I thought I would share a little trick for getting a nice clean background when you want to isolate a structure in Mandelbulb 3D. Why? Because sometimes the structures behind the main focus of your image or the main structure are either just small repeats of the main structure, or they are fragmented and in one way or another just not as interesting. Or the background might bury the foreground object in detail or draw attention away from what you really want the viewer to focus on. People strive for a lot of detail, and that's fine, and sometimes it works. But often I find that there's no main focus to frame your point of view. (Edit: I forgot to mention this is made using Mandelbulb 3D version 1.8.2 and I fixed a few typo's!)
Sometimes you're able to focus on the foreground structure through clever use of fog, lights and depth of field settings. Nothing wrong with that either, so this is just another
2011 BMFAC News UpdateBMFAC winners published in print magazine!2011 BMFAC News Update in Digital Art More Like This
The 25 winners of the Benoit Mandelbrot Fractal Art Contest were contacted in mid February to supply large format files of their winning images and also a short bio explaining their interest in fractal art, software used and general information about their work if they chose to do so. We were also informed that the first exhibit would be held in Logroño, in Northern Spain. Javier Barrallo, a Professor of Mathematics at The University of the Basque Country, Spain and also one of the panelists for the BMFAC was our contact for this. The current exhibit will be in the Casa de la Ciencia (House of Science), in Logroño, the Capital city of RIOJA until June 10th. I'll post a few pictures Javier sent further down. Javier also says he will send more pictures soon.
Also when I was contacted in February, Javier informed me that he had written an article about the BMFAC for a Spanish scientific magazine with all the winning images i
Interesting Mandelbulb 3D Image NewsInteresting email ~Interesting Mandelbulb 3D Image News in Personal More Like This
I received an interesting email this morning. Someone contacted me through my Fine Art America site requesting that I make a print available. I forgot to ask how she found the image, as I hadn't even posted it there yet. Anyway, it turns out this person is the daughter of Karl Menger, who's most famous popular contribution to mathematics (according to WikipediA), was the Menger sponge, a three-dimensional version of Sierpinski's carpet. The Menger3 formula (and other forms of it) certainly seem to be some of the most widely used and popular formulas for many that use Mandelbulb 3D.
The image she was interested in was one I recently posted here at DA, Wreck Of The Menger. Eve pointed me to a very interesting video that explains the Menger sponge quite well,

I was pleasantly surprised to receive my second DD yesterday! The piece was Could Be Trouble. Many, many thanks to DragonWinter for choosing it and the kind words she used to describe it! And of course thanks to all those who took the time to comment and fave the piece!
Are we looking hard enough?
This is more for the beginner who may be discouraged. I was just wanting to offer some input on a few things. In the past few months or so (actually the past year) I've had a bunch of time off from work because the construction industry is so slow. Because of that I have had an extraordinary amount of time to play with fractals. And it is partially due to those circumstances that I have been able to create a lot of nice pieces and also learn MB3D. I'm only saying this because I wanted people to know that while I have an eye for 'finding' interesting things
Mandelbulb 3D ~ Navigating TipCan't Get There From HereMandelbulb 3D ~ Navigating Tip in Personal More Like This
I thought that title was good as sometimes it's difficult to navigate MB3D pieces. It may only be me who has difficulty, I don't know. I Don't use the 3D navigator exclusively like many do. So it occurred to me that some of the pieces that I've posted parameters for may be difficult to tweak if you use the navigator exclusively. If you don't have any problems with the navigator, just disregard this journal, otherwise, read on.
My way or the highway...
Of course not. Everyone has their own techniques and favorite ways to explore. To think there is only one way to explore in MB3D is ridiculous. And I'm certainly not saying there is a best way either. What ever works for each of us should not be shoved off on others as the best or easiest way to go about things. What I'm discussing here will be how I go about it and how that might present problems to others if I happen to post parameters on a piece. Or perhaps you suddenly find that after adding a formula to your

Well I'm sorry to suck you in by that devious title! I haven't mastered anything, but I did finally put together all the useful advice given in comments from a recent journal (http://haltenny.deviantart.com/journal/42966411/) I wrote on navigating with the 3D Navi tool. The funny thing is I brought up my solution to navigating at Fractal Forums back in May and ~FractKali responded with a much better solution than mine, and I either didn't read it thoroughly or simply didn't understand it. So I want to make it clear that I am simply passing along advice from the comments I've received here and at Fractal Forums. I just want to organize and better explain the procedure in case any have missed some of the comments.
Disclaimer ~
I almost always offer this disclaimer. I readily claim that I am far from an expert with MB3D. If beaten over the head with information enough times, it eventually

1.What is apophysis? Its a free program used to create digital images based on mathematical equations. Don't worry the program does most of the work. A more basic way of looking at it would be you start with a single point and then add to it in different directions until you have an image.
Here Are a couple examples of what you could create using this program as you can see you add a lot of points to come up with a finished product. You can also see that the possibilities are virtually endless.
2.Where do I get Apophysis? The final version of Apophysis can be found here.He has some install instructi

Fractals that ROCK !! pt3Some new & some older finds from my vast gallery of fractal faves. I would say wrapping this years artworks, this is a year of the mandelbulb 3D - the new improved versions of the program, really opened up more horizons for many new fractal artists and also created fantastical compositions coming from the onces, who dabbled with the software longer time. Now with the reflections options, better dof settings, "dust" clean-up many scenes carry complex sci-fi terrains, or whole futuristic cities - just like Dune, or StarWars !!Fractals that ROCK !! pt3 in Personal More Like This

So it happens I'm in a spring mood and feel like being showered with flowers - time to shed the heavy skin clothing into light and fragrant. Got amazing comments on the blooms as well - from dreamy, in my dreams full of magic to I wish they grew in my garden, can you make some prints and even could you make the Blooms into 3d-sculptures
All ideas and suggestions are very welcome - on short time notice I did added some prints & also a brand new calendar (with Blooms only). You can always add it to your wish list (so you don't forget the blooms when Christmas comes) or you can get it even right now, still 10 solid months left, and afterwards you can get the singular month pages to use as prints(I do that - good price for 12 artworks).
