Hanson Bay
Kangaroo Island

This was a picture taken just before dawn on a memorable morning at Hanson Bay on the South coast of Kangaroo Island. The morning started off with thick fog which eventually lifted. The clouds were grey and gradually lit crimson while the sea spray and fog also lifted. All the while, shadows across the dunes were a striking feature of the foreground.

This weekend gone by, Marianne Charlotte and I headed down to the south east of the state to visit the limestone coast. The rugged coastline is filled with opportunities for photography as well as general chilling out and relaxation. The weather was often fine with blue skies during the day but at sunrise and sunset, there were dramatic clouds in the air with changeable weather. I was in the water waiting for sunrise and about to head out when the sun peeked out through the cloud cover and lit up the cliffs on the left.

Jokulsarlon, Iceland

This is another image we took during a magical weekend at probably the best place on earth we have visited thus far for photography. After fishing up some ice blocks which were floating around close to the shore, we placed them for foreground interest where they weren't affected by movement. This was taken just on dusk. It is also the last image in the movie I have linked below which shows how much (or little) Marianne and manipulate our images for the final product:

Breath-taking sunset light above the Crozon Penisula on an unsettled day in April. The peninsula is constantly exposed to extreme weather conditions because of its geographical position at the west end of France. In the photo’s background: the Island Pointe de Penhir.

After spending 3 weeks shooting in northern france I released the results on my website. I'll upload them here on DA during the next days.

The last bit of the daylight bathes the Mont Blanc and its neighboring mountains in a fascinating light. Europe’s highest mountain is reflected in a small mountain lake not far from the ‘Aiguillette du Brevent’.

I was tempted to call this "light playground II", but I figured the view wasn't similar. However, this is the exact vantage point I shot my image "Light Playground". I can say over and over that there is no place like this where you can see the light play so many tricks with the landscape. This is mother natures canvas, and she paints some beautiful scenes for us to appreciate. The angle of the light here was just perfect, and to see this ridge glow like this was special. It goes without saying that my trip to the north rim of the grand canyon earlier this year brought some of the most dramatic and unique light I have been able to see. I still have many many more from this magical weekend to share believe it or not.

The last image from my outing on the salt river. This wasn't the last shot I took, that goes to prickly pear margarita. This is just the last I'll share. This is a vertical pano of eight 9 horizontal images. Let's just say that the cliffs in this photo look like ants compared to how they are viewed in person. Amazing what a wide angle lens can do. My camera was also about three inches above the waters surface here. The reeds across the river are probably around 15-20 feet in height. I guess my point is that this image is MUCH more deceiving than it looks.

I took a quick 3 day weekend to Zion National Park. The first day was beautiful shorts/ tee-shirt weather, the following two were overcast, cloudy, foggy, and rainy. My very favorite weather to be practicing photography.

The bridge where I took this is akin to a circus at either sunrise or sunset, with hordes of other photographers jostling for a shot at this iconic location. I took this one well into the morning after the crowd had cleared and had the whole bridge to myself!

I finally had chance to get out for some proper Autumn photography in my local area. I had staked this patch of aspens previously and returned in the morning for what I hoped would be a memorable sunrise.

The 10,911 ft (3,326 m) Cathedral Peak towers over Upper Cathedral Lake and much of Yosemite National Park like an ancient sanctuary. During a colorful late August sunset the western slope picks up the last light of the day, as seen from the granite blocks 130 feet above the lake's surface and a deer browsing in the meadow to the left of the lake.

While in the distance the peaks of Matterhorn Peak, Twin Peaks, Camiaca Peak (most distant, right behind Fairview Dome) and Sheep Peak (left to right) loom just as majestically over Yosemite National Park and the Sierra Nevada range.

The frozen lagoon in front of Breiðamerkurjökull glacier was an amazing place to visit. Endless fields of blue icebergs, some as big as a house, assumed countless forms and triggered everyone's imagination. The soft morning sun colored the mountaintops red, to complement the scene.

At the crack of dawn, we were at one of Iceland's most incredible locations - Jökulsárlón, literally- glacier lagoon. I have never seen such an amazing place, and by luck, it was a clear morning, allowing the dormant volcano of Öræfajökull to recieve a wonderful alpine glow under the white moon.
This image was the one of the first I shot there, and the magical light wasn't at its peak yet. But the surreal combination of blue and pink is still embedded deep in my mind.
A lineup of beautiful glaciers was right on the lagoon's bank, as if they had decided to join us in watching the magic unravel.

If you'd like to experience and shoot this magical location, among many other incredible icy sceneries, you're welcome to join my upcoming 'Land of Ice' Iceland winter workshop taking place next January. The workshop is co-guided by renowned local Icelandic mountaineer and pro photographer Skarphedinn Thrainsson, and it will bring you to the most amazing locations for landscape photography in south Iceland.
