A Hundred Souls For Death 1It was a cold and rainy night when I died for the first time. I was walking to my apartment from the bus stop and a guy was dragging this girl into an alley. I don't know what I was thinking, but I tried to stop him and he pulled out a gun and shot me.A Hundred Souls For Death 1 in General Fiction More Like This
Heaven and Hell aren't really how you'd think. To get into the afterlife of your choice you have to work for all the things you'd done to hurt others. There are all sort of jobs, each one will pay for a different thing. For example, a year haunting corrupt politicians will pay back for a year of sins, while a year explaining these rules to new souls will only pay back for half a year of sins. When I got to the waiting room and was presented with my paperwork, there had been a massacre in an African country and most of the good jobs were gone. I had twenty-five years of sin to get rid of, and the only options left were soul-collecting or a year in Hell. A year in Hell might clear all my sins, but I'm sure you understand while I chose to c
A Hundred Souls - InterludeI can't really explain what it's like being dead. I mean, can you say what it's like being alive? You just kind of are, aren't you? Except, well, when you die, you just... aren't. It hurts. The dying part hurts. But once you're already dead, it's over. The pain stops, you stop breathing, your heart stops beating. You just aren't anymore. You aren't alive, you aren't real. You're not made out of stuff.A Hundred Souls - Interlude in Short Stories More Like This
I'm doing a real bad job of explaining this. Logan says I should write something about how it feels to not breathe. I say it's kind of hard to explain. It's not like holding your breath. It's just, like, well, when you're breathing you don't really notice it until you think about it, or you hold your breath or something like that. That's kind of what trying to breathe is like. You try and fill your lungs with air because you know that's what you're supposed to do. And you try and you try and your chest is burning and finally you give up, and a small part out you accepts you can't breathe
A Hundred Souls For Death 3Okay, so I'm an idiot. But that night, while my family was crying over my death and my boss was playing with his five-year-old son in the snow, and I was supposed to be taking the soul of this guy, that was the best night of my life- err, death. I also learned that anything a person who can see you does to you is like you're alive, but if they can't see you then it doesn't matter what they do, they can't touch you. To anyone else it looked like Logan was screwing his mattress, but to me and himA Hundred Souls For Death 3 in General Fiction More Like This
I'm getting distracted. After that night Logan didn't feel like killing himself anymore and I didn't want to leave him. Being dead, I don't sleep, so I spent the night cleaning the apartment and I made him breakfast. He woke up when I finished making the pancakes.
"Hey," he said. "I'm not gonna kill myself, you know. You don't have to hang out around here."
"I know," I said. "I want to be here." He took the pancakes and sat down on the couch to eat. I sat beside him; I don't have to eat so
A Hundred Souls For Death 2Maybe I'm being overly dramatic when I say that Logan changed me, but if you were there when I met him maybe you'd understand. When I met Logan Bellville he was the same age I was when I died. He was tall, broad shouldered, and had these bright blue eyes that just hit you when you looked at them. His face was absolutely gorgeous; everything about him seemed to glow. His hair was long and messy in that style I loved. He looked like an angel should look, which was odd because even though I'd been dead for two days I still hadn't seen a real angel yet so I had no idea what they actually looked like.A Hundred Souls For Death 2 in General Fiction More Like This
I went up to the top of the roof to see what was happening, but then I couldn't handle it. I didn't want to watch this beautiful boy jump off the roof and kill himself. I know I wasn't supposed to, but I stepped in.
"Logan Bellville," I said. He turned and I was smitten.
"Who are you?" He asked. That's when I realized that I was still wearing the stilts and the cloak and everything.
"Oh," I sa
A Hundred Souls For Death 13I decided to die for a third time around 11:45 on the bus back to Suruchi Restaurant.A Hundred Souls For Death 13 in Humor More Like This
Okay, so let's just summarize how stupid I am, for a second. I'm required to get five souls every day, and after only getting two and only being dead for four days I decided to visit my grieving family. I probably freaked my parents out by talking to my little brother and wasted a ton of time, then wasted even more time agreeing to go on a date with Logan. I then lost the soul I was supposed to collect because I took the fucking bus!
So I took the bus back to the restaurant, which was closer than the next soul I was supposed to collect and ran in to find Logan still waiting for me. He glared at me when I got in there. Suruchi is one of those fancy restaurants that I've never been able to afford to go to.
"Where have you been?" he snapped under his breath. "I try to do something nice and you stand me up."
"Oh, believe me, I would like to."
"No, really, kill me! Do it quick, I don't have a lo

"Yeah?" He asked.
"He's dead," I said.
"Great," Logan said with a sigh. "Can you take off the hood?"
"Sorry." I took off the hood. "There's a woman who's going to die two blocks from here," I added. "Her name's Isabel Jones."
"How's she going to die?" He asked while he got up and took his paper cup of coffee with him while we walked away.
"She's going to be murdered," I answered.
"Seriously?" He asked. "Uh, maybe I should do something to stop it."
"You can't," I said.
"What? Why not?" He looked so confused, it was cute.
"Because once I get this message it's certain that she's going to die," I explained.
"It wasn't certain with me, I'm still here," he said. I looked at my feet. That was something I didn't want him to find out. "What? What's wrong?" Logan asked.
"Well, uh," I stammered. "You're not dead yet, but I know how you're going to die."
"Seriously?" He looked up at me so curious and my heart nearly melted at the sight.
A Hundred Souls For Death 5The hospital was full of people in hooded cloaks waiting for people to die. I could see all of them, but Logan couldn't. He actually just followed me to the hospital anyway. Spending time together is great, but he didn't like hanging around in hospitals and I can't blame him. My job is pretty morbid, actually, and I wouldn't want to spend my time alive going to see people die. I've said it before and I'll say it again: this is not a fun job.A Hundred Souls For Death 5 in Humor More Like This
The soul I was being sent to collect belonged to a woman named Patricia Collette. She was eighty years old and dying of bronchitis. I waited in her hospital room for her body to finally give in. Patricia was older than any of the previous souls I had collected, but I still felt bad about her death. She'd lived a long, full life, or so she told her husband, but even so I don't think she deserved to die.
"What's going on?" She asked when her soul left her body. "Am I dead?"
"Yes," I answered. I know I'm not supposed to answer their questions, but she
A Hundred Souls For Death 6Having gotten my five souls of the day, I walked with Logan back to his apartment. We talked about anything that came up, and stopped for lunch along the way. I couldn't eat, of course, but Logan had to and of course I didn't mind stopping. When we got back to his place we spent a rather quiet evening at home, it was just like I'd always dreamed of, the perfect relationship except for the pardon the pun fatal flaw: I was dead.A Hundred Souls For Death 6 in Humor More Like This
Being dead tends to ruin relationships, you see. You're invisible, for one thing. And you're immortal. And, because of the way I died, I kind of had this hole in my chest. Logan put a bandage over it so he wouldn't have to look at it, which worked out alright for us. I'm glad I didn't die in a more gruesome way.
The next day I had to head out to get more souls again, and Logan went with me to the first one. It was a young woman named Rosie Bones, one who was murdered. We walked to the scene in a respectful silence. There she was, in an alley, hung u
A Hundred Souls For Death 16I sat by the side of the road for a while, not knowing what to do. Finally the beeping beside me made me check my pager at last. His name was Zachary Iannitto, and he was dying of diabetes. I looked back at the hospital behind me. I might as well go get him, right? Then I would have my five souls for the day and I could go talk to Logan or something.A Hundred Souls For Death 16 in Humor More Like This
I headed inside and I found Zachary in a hospital room. I'm sorry I can't tell you much about him, I was so freaked out I just kind of zapped him as soon as he died and ran. I didn't want to screw up anyone's life again.
I found Logan at his restaurant job and waited for him to get off work. We left and found a quiet spot alone in an alley where he wouldn't look crazy for kissing me.
"Logan, I'm so sorry," I said. "I feel like I'm screwing up your life. Living people aren't supposed to fall in love with dead people."
"Are you breaking up with me?"
"Logan," I said sadly, "I don't want to, I love you so much."
"Because I want you
A Hundred Souls For Death 14This is going to be a long story, I'm sure that you can tell by now. After all, I've only just started telling you about number sixteen and we're already on page forty-four. You're probably wondering why I'm telling you about every single one of the souls. Why are they important? After all, I wasn't interested in those souls, not really. I mean, I was sad for them, I felt sorry for them, but my mind was on Logan, not whatever soul I was chasing after next. But it is important that I tell you about them. That's why I'm writing this book. It's not about Logan, it's not about me! I want to tell you about all the souls I collected.A Hundred Souls For Death 14 in Humor More Like This
So, anyway, number sixteen was Henry Whitley. I found him in his room in the nursing home and sat by his bed until he died. Then it was back on the stilts, hood over the head, Scythe 2000 time.
"Henry Whitley," I said. "I am here to take you to the other side." I still hadn't really figured out what I was supposed to say to them when they died.

A place where Life and death are at a standstill.
Not a world filled with love and hate,
But a world that's just there.
Where the pain will stop and so will the tears.
Where people won't give up and get you a counsleor,
Where they will hold you till you can't breath and never want you to leave,
Is this the world?
No it's not...
