Chapter 4: Call And Answer
The white unicorn froze at Spike's question. Her mind was trying to form an answer as quickly as possible, but nothing was coming to her. Tripping over her words, Rarity mumbled something that was almost impossible to understand.
"What was that?" Spike asked, tilting his head to the side.
"Well," Rarity started, "I .uh .well ." The unicorn looked at the purple dragon, whose eyes gave a hopeful look to her, "I .honestly don't know, dear."
Spike raised an eyebrow, "Huh?"
Rarity sighed, "About this being a date, I don't know, Spike." The tone of her voice was a bit depressed, knowing she gave an answer that Spike did not want to hear.
"I .don't follow ." Spike admitted to being confused.
Rarity looked upward to the partly clouded night sky. A few stars were visible and the waxing moon of Luna's was hiding behind a cloud. "Well, that's just it, I don't know if this is a date. I

Chapter 5: Someday We'll Know
A new day began in Ponyville with Celestia's sun rising into the sky. The light from the sun shown into Rarity's bedroom, waking the white unicorn that was upon her bed. Opening her tired eyes, Rarity stretched out her limbs and stood on the wooden floors. Her purple mane was not styled as it normally would be, as she had just woke up. Normally, she would be quick to attend to her mane as soon as she got up, yet something was peculiar. Rarity felt melancholic.
Slowly trotting to her bathroom, she looked at herself in the mirror as she drew closer. Looking at her reflection, she sighed loudly as a magically levitating brush to attend to her mane. Inside of her her head, she talked to herself, "Dear me, why am I just so down trotted today? I feel so .off." Rarity paused mid brush, and thought about the night before. Chapter 1: Give A Little Bit
It was a sunny day in Ponyville. The sky was dotted with a few clouds, most were small and easily drifting in the wind. In the library, Twilight Sparkle was cleaning the building with her small dragon assistant, Spike. The purple unicorn used her magic to stack the books neatly next to the dragon, to which Spike placed the book on the correct shelf using his small ladder. This was their normal Sunday routine, which would end with a gem as a treat for Spike, his favorite part. However, their ritual was interrupted by a knock at the front door.
"Hmm? I wonder who that could be?" Twilight asked herself as she slowly made her way to the door to open it. Behind the door was a white unicorn with a stylish purple mane. She looked a little troubled and slightly stressed, "Oh, hello there, Rarity."
"Hello, Twilight," she replied, her voice seemed to be concerned.

Chapter 3: Gratitude
The next day, Rarity was working in her shop for the entire day. She had a few orders to catch back up on due to her making the costumes for the plays. The unicorn worked well throughout the day without a single problem. Humming happily to herself as she worked, she was interrupted by a knock at the door as the workday was drawing to a close.
"Ah, that must be her now," Rarity spoke to herself as she trotted down the stairs to open the door. The front door was opened to a light blue pegasus pony with a colorful mane, "Hello there, Rainbow Dash! Do come on in, dahling."
"Thanks, Rarity. So ya need me watch over Sweetie Belle for the evening?" Dash asked as she entered the Carousel Boutique.
Rarity nodded, "Yes, I have something to take care of tonight."
Rainbow Dash was puzzled, "What do ya need to do?"
"Oh, well," Rarity began, "tonight I'm treating Spike to dinner."
"Spike? Why so?"

Chapter 2: Limelight
Saturday morning arrived and Ponyville was lively and active as Celestia's sun rose over the land. Many ponies were hard at work to prep for the busy day. There were a number of ponies setting up different booths for activities for anypony who wished to try their luck at winning various prizes. There were other ponies that were cooking various tasty treats, which led to the air being filled with the air of the aroma of the food.
At the Carousel Boutique, Rarity was prepping herself for the day. Using her magic, she placed all of the costumes that she and Spike had made into a truck neatly.
"There, all neat and organized!" Rarity thought aloud. She was finally relieved to have the outfits neatly organized and ready to deliver to the stage.
Using her magic again, she trotted out of her home with the case. Passing all of the vendors who were prepping for the day, an idea entered the unicorn's mind. She decided t

Chapter 5: You
Celestia's sun shined down upon Ponyville. It was a warm and pleasant day for all the ponies that were out and about. One blue pegasus, however, was a bit uneasy as she flew towards the library. Rainbow Dash, who convinced herself the night before to follow her friend's advice about being forward with her feelings, was in a panicky state. She couldn't help but feel nervous. Dash never had to tell anypony how she felt about them, and most of the time she didn't feel a need to. But now, she was given the task to tell Spike how she felt about him.
'Coming on, Rainbow Dash! You can do this. I mean, its just Spike, right? What's the worst that can happen? He's a little shrimp and it's no big deal if he finds it weird, right?' the pegasus repeatedly tried to calm herself, but to no avail. She didn't have enough time to as she arrived at the library's front door. Taking a deep breath, she knocked at the do

Chapter 2: One Tree Hill
The long school day was finally drawing to a close for all the students in Cheerilee's class. All the ponies (and Spike) went outside and began to chat amongst themselves before leaving. Spike and the Cutie Mark Crusaders were talking and laughing as among themselves as two prissy fillies showed themselves.
"Well, well, it looks like the blank flanks got themselves a pet," one of them said.
The four turned to see two ponies, one pink and the other gray. It was Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon.
"Oh dear, not them," Sweetie Belle thought aloud.
"Don't you two have somepony else to annoy?" Scootaloo had a large amount of distaste in her voice.
"Nope, just your's. Aren't you lucky?" Silver Spoon said with a hint of sass in her voice.
"So, is this dragon belong to you girls or did you have to steal him?" Diamond Tiara trotted up to Spike, looking at him with interest. Spike gave her an odd look as he was

It was a warm day in Ponyville with one white unicorn inside her home. She was styling her beautiful purple mane with a brush, preparing for an occasion that she was both excited and anxious about. Looking at herself in the mirror, she gave a deep sigh and a nervous smile to herself. Rarity was hoping the sigh would relax her, but to no avail. A ringing of the doorbell, however, interrupted her thoughts.
"Well, here it goes," she whispered to herself as she walked down the staircase to the door.
Rarity paused at the door and took a deep breath. After what seemed to be an eternity, she finally opened the door to see a young purple dragon with a wicker basket. It was Spike. He looked extremely uncomfortable and shy, which showed in his voice, "H-Hey Rarity, are y-you ready?"
Rarity smiled warmly to the young dragon, "Of course, dahling." Rarity stepped out of her home and stood next to Spike, "Shall we away, dear

Chapter 1: Turn The Page
Celestia's sun was shining down on Ponyville, giving a warm afternoon feel for the residents. While most of the ponyfolk were relaxed, there was one light blue pegasus who was racing towards her destination. It was Rainbow Dash, whose multi-colored mane was a blur to anypony who saw her. Finally landing in front of the Ponyville library, she checked the saddlebag on her back, double-checking to make sure it had not fallen off mid-flight, which it had a tendency to do. After her examination, she knocked on the door.
"Just a second!" a muffled voice from inside called out.
"No rush," Rainbow Dash replied to the voice. While she wasn't in a hurry, almost everything in her life was some sort of race or competition. It's how she was.
After what felt like eternity to the blue mare, the door was opened. Expecting to see her purple unicorn friend, Dash saw a small purple and green dragon.

Chapter 1: A Horse With No Name
It was a warm afternoon at Sweet Apple Acres. While most of the ponies on the farm finished their work up in the early afternoon, there was one orange mare that was still pulling more than her fair share of work on the farm. Applejack knew that she had already did more than enough work on the farm for one day, but she figured that she should start on the next day's work since she was already in her working groove.
As the mare worked in sun, she found that she bit off more of the apple than she could chew. It wasn't the first time, and anypony would bet that it wouldn't be the last. She still had one last grove of trees that needed to be bucked and barreled, but she noticed that her body was losing the vigor that she had when she started her project.
"Whew, maybe ah should think things through next time," Applejack said to her self as she trotted into the groove with the cart for the apples

Chapter 3: Outer Space
"Rainbow Dash? Hello? Anypony home?" Spike called to the pony, waving his claws in the air in hopes of getting her attention.
The blue pegasus was snapped out of her thoughts by the dragon's voice, "Huh, wha?"
"I was saying that I need to go and run some errands and pick some things up before Twilight gets back tomorrow morning. Will you be alright if I leave you here by yourself?" the dragon repeated his question that Dash didn't hear.
"Oh, uh, you know what, why I don't I help ya out? Ya know, so you don't have to carry all of that stuff alone," Rainbow quickly added the second part to give her a reasonable excuse to go with him.
Spike nodded, "Alright, that will be really helpful for me!"
Rainbow Dash hopped off the sofa and walked with Spike out of the library and to the Ponyville marketplace. As they walked, Spike started some small talk between himself and the blue pony.

"Wait what!? War?" David said repeating what Bio had told him as he was lead into the Apple family barn. "That's right, war." Bio grunted as he rolled a map out onto a table where Spitfire and Soarin were already standing. "Nightmare Sol has taken over ALL of Canterlot. Her power is like a plague. As it grows it engulfs everything it touches and turns it evil. Every servant, every guard, every pony in that castle and town now follows her!" He said slamming his tail on the table. David felt like his heart stopped. "Even Twilight and the others?" Bio sighed. "No not them. My guess is she wants to use them as bait and lure you back so she can slay you." David pounded his fists on the table until they were bright red.
"UGGGH! How am I supposed to fight against her? She brushed me aside like a parasprite." He said with images of how easily he had been crushed earlier flashing through his mind. "I don't know. What I do know however is with the rate this evil i

She jerked her head up to see David glowing a dark purple and leaping into the air heading for Nightmare Sol. She watched, entranced as the Dark Guardian headed down toward Nightmare Sol, hacking his way through her dark tendrils. "YOU WON'T STOP ." David and his army marched into Appleloosa the following day. Most of the glances they received from the ponies in the town were those of confusion or concern. He didn't blame them, he would probably be concerned too if 300 ponies in armor walked through his town. "Can I help you fellar's with something?" A pony wearing a sheriff's badge said as he walked toward the group.
"Yes you could actually. I'm looking for a pony named Braeburn." David said as calm as possible. "Now why are ya 'll looking for Braeburn?" The sheriff asked narrowing his eyes. "That's none of your business, and if you want us to stay peaceful I suggest you tell the Guardian what he wants to know." Bio said getting right in the sheriff's face. He was worried that he couldn't save any of the girls despite their screams driving him insane. He was angry that he hadn't seen Nightmare Sol's arrival sooner despite all the ways Celestia had been acting. He would awaken with a cold sweat only to find that he was still in the Library, Twilight sleeping next to him. After his 3rd nightmare he didn't go back to sleep but instead began looking through some of the books in the library.
One book caught his eye immediately. It was dark black and had a silver spine, but it was the title that got his attention. "The Gates of Darkness" he said as he opened the book. It seemed strange when he woke up, but he now realized that throughout his nightmares a voice had kept repeating Gates of Darkness. David tore the book open and began reading as quick as he could. Luna said quietly since the guards were still standing in front of their cell.
Twilight gasped at the mention of the Gates of Darkness. She had read about them in one of her books, and had been terrified of it so much that she had nightmares for 4 days straight. "The Gates of Darkness?" Rarity repeated. "Yes. The Gates of Darkness are a magical barrier that seals all the evil and darkness Equestria has ever known behind them. When she first appeared in Ponyville years ago, Pinkie was only a small pink filly and her mane was strait from sadness and the rain. Hearth's Warming WeatherRainbow Dash marvelled at her work as she hovered above the frozen landscape. Ponyville was blanketed by a thick but even layer of soft snow, shimmering with the light of Luna's moon. It was truly a beautiful sight one that even Rarity would stare open jawed at. Rainbow smirked as her eyes took in the view, it was truly a masterpiece from Ponyville's master weather pony. Suddenly Rainbow quivered as an ice-cold lance of wind tore through her soft coat. She laughed lightly as she looked up, the grand creation of clouds filled the sky as a calming blanket, though it wasn't the type of blanket Rainbow truly wanted as she flapped her freezing wings for the final time, gently lowering herself onto a wooden beam. She knew all to well the reason for her distress. 'Twilight Sparkle, who is it you love?' Celestia kept loosing herself to her thoughts and worries. She loved and cared for Twilight like a sister, at first she feared it was the same as with her real sister, Princess Luna. It was a late afternoon in Ponyville with a beautiful sunshine and a cloudless sky. The atmosphere was calm and peaceful, but inside the Carousel Boutique, the beautiful white unicorn, Rarity, appeared to be very busy with something. She was running back and forth using her magic horn to pick up ribbons and sewing tools for her latest project. Several rather elegant dresses were set up on pony-shaped manikins and the last one was still in the process of being made.
The magically talented unicorn, Twilight Sparkle, and her assistant, Spike the dragon, waited patiently as Rarity hassled to finish the last dress. She had a fashion show coming up tomorrow and was already a bit behind on schedule. Twilight and Spike heard about this and came to see if she needed some help with the show. Most of it was just the same as the first day: photo shoots in various dresses, but it was getting a lot more interesting. Rarity continued to bring her own dresses to use and Photo Finish even agreed to make advertisements in their magazine for Rarity's boutique. During the afternoon when Rarity was working, she found more ponies coming in during sale hours and asking for more commissions. She gazed on at Fluttershy for a moment, before a small part of her reminded her of her situation. Her smile turned into a deep frown. She forced herself out of bed on the far side from Fluttershy.
"I've taken enough from you." Trixie whispered. Her horn continued to glow as she enveloped Fluttershy in a magical aura. She gently lifted Fluttershy from her seat and pulled back the covers. She slid

"There you go, Mr. Badger. You make sure you stay off that paw now." Fluttershy told the small critter in front of her, one hoof holding up a bandaged paw while the other carefully stroked it's back. The badger gave a grumpy growl in response.
"Now now, it was her vegetable garden after all. If you're ever hungry, come see me, okay?" Fluttershy responded, patient as ever. She gave the badger back his paw and the creature wandered off. Fluttershy smiled and looked around. Today was just a perfect day in her mind. The sun had warmed the hill she sat on, making it all the more comfortable as she tended to the creatures that came to her for aid. She preferred to tend to them in her hut, where she could thoroughly clean and care for any wound or problem, but many wild animals weren't all that comfortable indoors, and she did her best to accommodate them.
However, her next visitor was no small critter. A cloaked figure emerged from the Everfree forest, turning to Fluttershy once sh

"Good evening." Luna greeted Twilight as the young unicorn stepped onto the same balcony as the princess. It had been just beyond their rooms, facing slightly off of south, giving a few of the city below. Canterlot had not fallen asleep yet; carts traveled to their final destinations of the day, couples went about for dinner, shopkeeps began to close up for home. Twilight bowed her head in greetings as she stepped out.
"Celly dotes on me so, it's a little embarrassing." Luna looked past Twilight to the two guards nearby. Twilight gave a nervous smile. She wondered - was this Celestia trying to protect her younger sister, or protect others from her little sister?
"How are you feeling?" she asked to shift the conversation. So far, Luna, while soft-spoken, didn't seem so poorly. Her opinion shifted slightly when Luna hung her head and let out a long sigh.
"So tired. And the night hasn't even begun. Once upon a time I relished this time of day, if only because I knew at least for

Rainbow Dash lay on a cloud, head in her hooves, looking out at nothing in particular. She had to keep her gaze down to keep the sun out of her eyes, and ended up pony-watching. Nothing in particular was going on; it was early enough in the summer that the heat hadn't gotten bad, but after planting season. Ponies went about their business in the late morning, a few deciding on an early lunch while most ran errands or still worked. Nothing special at all. At least, until she saw Fluttershy rushing through town with full saddlebags. It was odd enough to see Fluttershy in such a hurry, let alone with her packs. Rainbow Dash decided to see what her longtime friend was up to and took off from her cloud. She easily caught up to her Fluttershy by flying just above the ground.
"Hey Fluttershy. What's up?" she asked, making her flight look casual next to the hurried pony.
"Twilight said it was an emergency!" Fluttershy explained. It really came out more in gasps; Fluttershy was hardly

Luna was holding up well on the walk to the library, though Twilight could read the strain on her face. She didn't really know how to behave. what was expected of her? What should she do? Should she treat Luna like a fillyfriend? That didn't even answer any questions, given that Twilight had the dating experience of a particularly socially inept rock.
"Twilight? What's going through your mind?" Luna asked. Twilight realized she had been staring.
"Ah, uh...I'm sorry. I'm just nervous. I don't know what to do, I mean, about...us?" the term seemed so foreign, so odd to apply. Luna both blushed and smiled, equal parts embarrassed and elated. At least Twilight knew she wasn't alone.
"You needn't worry. All you've done, and still you want to do more." she leaned over as they walked and nuzzled the side of Twilight's neck, playing with her mane. Twilight nickered, ticklish.
"There is generosity, but there is sacrifice. For my sake, please, do not go too far."

One very illuminating lesson on abacus use and maintenance and several hours of peaceful study later, Twilight and Luna left the library. Twilight could still hardly believe it as Luna had challenged to beat her with a calculator - and then won hoofs down. All with the help of beads and her own mental faculties she had computed things Twilight had wanted to write down before even getting to the calculator. For the first time in a very, very long time Twilight felt, well, stupid. She often felt foalish, out of place or embarrassed. She had never been made to feel stupid.
Luna had meant only to show off a little though, and Twilight held nothing against her. The younger princess had little enough to be proud of as it was. And that little display had helped the Princess make several insights to current tax regulations. Twilight was honored that the Princess had turned to her several times through the night, using her to clarify what the books could not. And she had gotten her ow

Outside the black storm raged unabated, the shrieking winds whipping around the Library, the great tree creaking and groaning as if it would splinter apart at any moment, the rain pouring against the windows as if they were trapped in the course of a surging torrent. But none of the ponies inside could hear any of it: all they could hear was the soft sobbing of their friend, and her desperate, unanswered prayers. They all watched, heartbroken, in silence except for the soft weeping of Spike, whose face was still buried in Twilight's chest, unable to look at either Dash or Pinkie.

Rarity looked at them and beamed. "Oh, most ASSUREDLY Applejack. They're like a dream come true!"
Twilight's eyes flicked open. A dream come true. A dream? Where had she heard that before? Somepony had said something about a dream, and for her to be careful. But who had it been? Suddenly she heard Zecora's voice echo in her head.
"Hear my advice and heed it well, lest the dream should draw you under its spell; Do not forget that all you see is shaped from the dreamer's memory."

She stood up and as she did she noticed that sunlight was streaming in through the windows. She opened the door to the library and looked outside. It was a beautiful sunny day. A light breeze ruffled her mane, while above her fluffy white clouds floated serenely against the blue vault of a summer sky.
"Is... is this really a dream?" she wondered. But it all seemed so real! Twilight didn't know what she'd been expecting gloomy forests, twisted buildings, labyrinthine streets filled with grotesque illusions maybe?
She was about to go outside when she stepped on something lying on the floor. It was an envelope! She floated it up for a closer look.

"I'm so glad that you decided to come to the ball with me, Dash!" said Star Catcher. Her mane was done up in a formal style, an abundance of curls fashioned into a crown at her poll, the rest falling down the other side in a waterfall of blue and pink. Her ears glittered with diamond earrings and the necklace at her throat sparkled. Dash had never seen a filly look more stunning. She blushed as she took the hoof Star Catcher offered her and they stepped together through the huge doors that led into the great hall of Cloudsdale Flight School.
The roof of the hall was open to the air and the weather had been expressly designed for the evening's celebration. A sliver of a moon shone down through layers of stratus clouds that lit up in its soft light like a veil of glowing yellow-silver. "I do hope Rarity and the fillies are OK " thought Twilight as she battled her way through the driving rain. "I don't want to imagine what damage Applebloom and her friends have done to the boutique by now, stuck inside out of this storm!"
Her hooves splashed up muddy water as she trotted, soaking her legs, while about her the storm continued to ravage the little town. Trees bent in the growling winds and the rain was now almost a vertical wall that she had to struggle through. The umbrella she had brought from the library had long since been blown out of her telekinetic grip, and had spiralled off into the deepening darkness.
Twilight was almost at Rarity's boutique when a pony came rushing up to her out of the gloom. It was Nurse Mercy, the head of the Ponyville hospital, and she was in such a hurry that she almost ran straight into the unicorn pony.

It was then that she felt somepony approaching her along the colonnade, from the direction of Cloudsdale Flight School's hall where the Autumn Sky Ball was coming to an end. She didn't turn her head, but sobbed and rubbed the tears from her eyes.

When Dash woke up, she realised the voice calling her had been doing so for some time. It had slipped into her dreams she'd been back in Flight School in Cloudsdale, and she'd obviously done something to annoy her fellow students: everypony's eyes followed her wherever she went, and everywhere there was a conspiratorial whisper of "Rainbow Dash Rainbow Dash..."
As the Pegasus pony shrugged off sleep and stretched her wings, she looked down from her cloud home to see Twilight calling up to her.
"You're finally awake! Thank Celestia," the unicorn pony muttered. "You're a deep sleeper I've been down here calling you for about five minutes now!"

Dash shook her head in annoyance. "Smoggy and Patchy you guys! What a time to be taking an extended vacation!" She flew up and placed one of her trash bags gingerly on the top of the already teetering pile. "You'd think the Mayor would have organised somepony other than Derpy Hooves to be in charge of the trash collection while they're away." Flying back down, she collected another bag and flew it to the top of the pile. "When will " she grabbed another bag, "everypony learn" and another, "that Derpy just isn't the most" and another. The next thing Pinkie saw was Twilight Sparkle's face, contorted in absolute horror, gaping at her.
"Pinkie Pie," Twilight whispered, her violet eyes wide and staring. "What what have you done?"
"What are you talking about, Twilight?" asked Pinkie. She saw that she was in Sugarcube Corner and in front of her was a still-steaming batch of cupcakes fresh out of the oven. "I'm just making cupcakes!"
Twilight's sickened gaze switched from Pinkie to somewhere over her shoulder - and then her mouth slipped open in silent scream at what she saw. Pinkie turned in shock and saw something on one of the work benches the sight was so inexplicable that it took her several heartbeats to realise it was a Pegasus pony, lying on its side.

Another day had come and gone on Sweet Apple Acres. It had been a good applebucking season so far, and despite being utterly exhausted by their efforts that day, Applejack simply couldn't fall asleep. She would toss and turn in her bed, trying to catch the least bit of shuteye, but to no avail - frustrated, the mare rolled out of bed and paced her room. The oddest feeling was nagging at her, and she almost felt as if this were something like her friend's 'Pinkie Sense'.
"Naw. I know Pinkie Sense, and this ain't it."
She huffed and continued to pace about, sometimes staring out her window at the moonlit orchard. It didn't make any sense to her at all - everything was going well at Sweet Apple Acres, her relationships with her friends were as perfect as could be, and even Apple Bloom was managing to do well in school, yet here was this nagging feeling. At the very least, Applejack knew who could help her. She walked out the door of her room and m

Camp had been set up for the night, and Twilight Sparkle was busy taking notes about her wings. They were certainly peculiar - they completely lacked any real nerves, tendons, or muscles, and yet they felt... alive. She could feel every little twitch and touch, and though such a sensation normally would have drove her crazy, the spell itself would only last for three days before dissipating. As much as she had enjoyed being able to truly fly, the unicorn was somewhat looking forward to just going back to her old self.
"Hey Twi?" The earth pony glanced over at her companion, who had set her quill down in order to look back. "Soup's ready, if yer hungry."
"Oh, great!" She smiled as her horn glowed, bringing a bowl of soup over to her. "Thanks, AJ."

Nightfall. Twilight Sparkle was still fast asleep, and Applejack felt it best not to wake her - she had been through an awful lot, after all. The earth pony had already started a small fire in their make-shift camp, and many of the items that had been in Twilight's saddlebags had been dumped next to the warmth of the fire to give them a chance to dry. Many of the unicorn's belongings survived her plunge into the water, and even the books would be quite alright. They had each packed a sleeping bag and tent of their own, however, and both of those seemed to be missing entirely from the lavender mare's belongings. That might prove to be a problem later on, but they had good weather thus far - there was no reason to believe that it was going to get any worse.
Applejack sighed and set Twilight's saddlebags by the fire before returning to her own. Taking a seat by the fire, she opened up her own saddlebags and pulled out a harmonica, pressing t

She drank before, and of course she had dealt with hangovers as well. This, however? This was a doozie of a hangover. Applejack groaned and pulled her pillow over her head, doing anything she could to block out the morning light. Something caught her ear, though - voices just outside her window, and she recognized them. "...Twi?"
The mare slowly sat up, rolling out of bed and grimacing as she promptly fell to the floor. She got up and peeked over the window sill, squinting in a vain effort to block out as much light as possible. From what little she could see, Big Macintosh and Twilight Sparkle were talking just below, and she quickly dove back into bed as she saw them both walk into the house. Even as she heard hoofsteps going up the steps and her own door opening, she tried her best to feign being asleep - given her status as the Element of Honesty, however, it wasn't exactly convincing.

Daybreak. Despite how early it was, Applejack was already up in time to see Celestia's sun make its morning climb into the sky. She knew she should have gotten as much rest as possible, but it was difficult to sleep when you had such an adventure planned out ahead of you. The mare had already made her way downstairs and out the door, frowning as the grass crunched beneath her - a frost this early in the year was not a good sign, and certainly didn't bode well for the trip she and Twilight would be taking. At the very least, the applebucking season was essentially done. Just a few rows remained, meaning Big Macintosh and Apple Bloom would have a fairly easy time running the farm in her absence.
"Good morning, Applejack!"
Applejack cried out and defensively leaped backwards, bumping into the side of the house and sending her flat on her face. Her hat had slipped down over her face, and for the life of her, she couldn't see who had shown up - she knew

She sighed. Had it really come to this? Forced to take medicine just so she could get a decent amount of sleep? The earth pony glanced over at her bed and then back to the bottle, staring at it once more. Reluctantly, she popped open the bottle and dumped out two pills, throwing them into her mouth and swallowing. After placing the top back on it, Applejack undid her hair bands and climbed into bed, pulling the covers tight over herself. Maybe tonight would be different, and she would actually get some rest.

It had been a shorter trip than expected. Almost every shop that had the magical components she needed was either sold out or not open at all, and Twilight Sparkle had been forced to simply mail an order form to Canterlot. Still, it meant she would have to put her experiments on hold, which in turn meant she would have a break from her work - not a bad thing at all. The baby dragon, roused from his nap, made his way down the stairs and threw the unicorn a halfhearted salute, followed by a yawn. "Ngh... morning, Twilight."

Another yawn, and Spike idly shrugged. "Meh. Same thing. I got the books you wanted, they're already down in your lab. Also, Applejack stopped by while you were gone. Left a message too."

Big Macintosh had picked this spot out for his date with Twilight Sparkle for several reasons. First and foremost, it was quiet and secluded - it wasn't as if he was going to try to make a move on her or anything. As polite and pretty as the unicorn may have been, the red stallion had no interest in her. Rather, he planned on telling Twilight a thing or two about both herself and his own sister, and to do so, he was going to have to dig up some secrets that had been buried long ago. Such things were best discussed away from others, lest they begin to spread about, and these were already rather sensitive things to be discussing with another.
The second reason? That was easy enough - he had come to this place time and time again whenever he needed to think about something. It was a tiny pond, with a babbling brook and a tree hanging over it, and it was almost the very meaning of 'serene'. Macintosh had spent a lot of time here after

Twilight Sparkle's horn softly glowed as her magic held the list and pencil aloft, and she checked off the item upon the list. She had returned to her favorite stargazing spot for this night, and it was the very same hill she and her friends had stood upon when they had watched the same meteor shower many months ago. It was far from the lights of Ponyville, and was fairly tall as well - perfect for an occasion such as this.
"Blanket to lay upon - check!"
All it had taken was a brief stop by Rarity's, and the fashionista had managed to whip a new blanket together in just a few short minutes. It was fairly simple, consisting of nothing more than a white and purple checkerboard pattern, but all the lavender mare had wanted was something to keep her from laying upon the grass. The ground could get colder than most thought during the night, especially once dew had begun to form,
