VOLUME INDICATOR | Built for geektool

Photoshop KungFu by *Allucard9
Coding mumbo jumbo by ~palobo

Details
This is a simple script that updates a series of beautifully crafted images to reflect the current volume level.

The script has been optimized as much as possible so as to cause little to no impact on system performance. Nonetheless there is always room for improvement so if you spot a bug or improve on the script please let us know.

Other than that... Enjoy. We had fun making it for you all!

Cheers!

Update v1.1
- Script now uses geeklet names rather than IDs making initial setup easier;
- There is now a landscape and portrait version.
- Script now accommodates for other images (Read instructions)
- Updated instructions making them clearer and fixing some errors report by users. Thanks ;)
- Now with a Quickstart Guide ;)
Please let me know if you have any troubles with this update

FAQ
The script isn't working. What's wrong?
- Make sure you have a refresh rate set.
- If your path has spaces then enclose it in quotes.

How can I troubleshoot errors?
Open the script in applescript editor, change the volume and click on run. Usually the error is simple but if you have trouble the note me and I'll do my best to help

Note
People, the graphics here belong to Allucard9 so if you wan't to use them in your projects then you need to ask him for permission, however the applescript that puts it all together is GPL so you can use it with your own graphics ;);)

All I ask is maybe mention or let me know if and how you used my script. I'd love to see it!

Mountain Lion Fix

Mountain Lion change the Volume Output integers ever so slightly so in order for this to function correctly in ML you will have to rename the foreground images accordingly. Here's the list to help you out

UPDATE - Lion Fix
To all those who are having troubles getting this working under Lion ~Sam-Pa has figured out a solution. My thanks to him. Once I have time I will update the instructions and original script in the download with this information

  • This has been tested with Lion and geekool from AppStore

  • If you are not able to open the .glet files check here: [link]
    To Summarize:

You have to get GeekTool Helper out of the package, copy it to the Applications folder, change the Open With on all .glet files to that, then delete the GeekTool Helper app from Applications again.

  • ~Sam-Pa's revised and corrected version of the script can be found here: [link]

Known Issues

  • Every time GeekTool runs the AppleScript via osascript, both the .scpt and .plist file gets written to, regardless whether the volume has changed or not.

Once again, Props to those who helped and contributed towards VolumeBar Indicator

My KDE meets elementary

Here's my feeble attempt to reproduce Dan Rabbit's excellent Elementary look. (Which I'm a huge fan of and miss ever since switching to KDE).

This is strictly qtcurve, nothing else.

Please comment, critique and let me know where I can improve.

Credits (Dually deserved)
Main Inspiration:
- Elementary Poject
- Elementary GTK
Panel: Idea shamelessly stolen from lassekongo83, link
Conky and Wallpaper: Idea from lassekongo83 (link), Wallpaper from elusive (link).
Guidelines and encouragement: ~narf41(link)
Icons: Elementar port by Islingt0ner [link]
qtcurve: by moime.

Cheers,
PL

P.S.: I'm not much of a designer and therefore have some dificulty with color. I'm sure it's not 100% right so if you can help in that respect, great. I'd appreciate it.

This is a setup I'm using with my current desktop. Since I like it and it's rather soothing I decided to share.

Hope somebody finds it useful.

Credits
Inspiration comes from weakhead's excelent Lifestyle Suite.

Included
- QtCurve config
- Color scheme.

Currently I'm only using the Sky - Dark variant, but if more people are interested I can work on porting the other variants.

Critique
As always, all critiques, comments an suggestions for improvement are most welcome.

Hope you enjoy it.

Cheers,
PL

A nice smooth plasma theme, inspired by a widget mockup [link]

Icons [link]

Wallpapers [link] [link]

Instructions:

Extract the theme to ~/.kde/share/apps/desktoptheme/

Select the theme in System Settings>Workspace Appearance>Desktop Theme>Theme

If the theme doesn't show right for some reason, delete the cache file ~/.kde/cache (machinename)/plasma_theme_smoother.kcache

Important Notes

The theme will not look like the preview in some ways with older KDE versions due to new design options in KDE 4.10, specifically scrollbar thickness(control of this has been added for designers), add widgets panel(tasks don't theme this now, it's done in a different file, which is a good thing). It's nothing major but be aware that some things will look slightly different but nothing should be broken.

Licence: GPL

Compatibility

KDE 4.10 recommended (If you use Kubuntu/Ubuntu 12.10, KDE 4.10 is in backports PPA repo, which I currently use)

Font Details

Aller Sans, 8pt, Sub-pixel RGB, Hinting: slight.

Design Details

Inkscape for widget SVG work, The GIMP 2.8 for preview composition.

Update 1.1 - 16 Feb 2013

- Fixed 1px spacing issue with inputbox.
- Added various system tray icons for KDE4 apps.
- Added credits in the readme to Malcer for using some systemtray icons from the Caledonia plasma theme.
- Added new Steam icon.

Update 1.2 - 21 Feb 2013

- Added new system tray icons for various apps, dropbox, VLC, kalarm, dialog, kgpg, kaffeine.
- Added toolbar-icons in Smoother style.

A plasma theme based the GTK2 Atolm theme.

Atolm [link]

GNOME-Shell version [link]

Wallpaper [link]

Icons [link]

Instructions:

Extract the theme to /home/username/.kde/share/apps/desktoptheme/ (hidden directory)

Select the theme in System Settings>Workspace Appearance>Desktop Theme>Theme

If the theme doesn't show right for some reason, delete the cache file ~/.kde/cache (machinename)/plasma_theme_atolm.kcache and reapply the theme.

KDE 4.10 recommended.

Update - 1.0.1 - 16th June 2013

- Fixed problem with task hover not having the proper id name.

This is a theme based on GTK3 version of Numix for QtCurve. Satya164 asked me if I could do a KDE4 version and I accepted. :)

Numix GTK3 [link]

Icons: [link] (not a KDE4 icon theme package)

Wallpaper: Part of the KDE4 official wallpapers.

Instructions:

Make sure you install the QtCurve package and GTKCurve for a consistent look for GTK apps. Go to System Settings,
Application Appearance>Style>Widget Style and select "QtCurve" in the dropdown box. Press the Configure
button and press "Import" in the QtCurve window and locate the .qtcurve theme file. Click OK and then apply the theme.
Select the window decoration in System Settings>Workspace Appearance>Window Decorations

In Application Appearance>Colours, select import Scheme. and load the colour scheme file, click apply.

If you want a consistent look with GTK apps, change the GTK theme in "GTK Styles and Fonts" to QtCurve.
Make sure the KDE4 colour scheme is applied to GTK apps in the KDE colour scheme options "Apply colours to
non-KDE4 applications".

Notes

Not 100% recreation, found it hard to do certain colours in certain widgets.

Licence: GPL

DanRabbit and The Elementary Project ([link]) are quite popular these days; unfortunately the icons are Gnome specific.

Technically Gnome icons should work under KDE (yay freedesktop) and they do for the most part, but there are some oddities that each DE uses.

Here is my very preliminary, very crude port to KDE. Lets hope The Elementary Project does an official port. :)

I believe these are under the GPL but I could be wrong; if I am in the wrong please leave me a message.

UPDATE 11.16.13:  I regret to inform all you fine, fine, folk - I am no longer able to provide feedback for those of you having trouble setting up this Geeklet. To clarify, it's not that I don't want to provide assistance or anything like that, its just, honestly, I don't have the time these days. As I'm a full time student with  a full time job, which unfortunately leaves me with no free time.

In addition, I don't even know if this geeklet works with the newest version of the OS X 'Mavericks' - as I have yet to test it. However, I have previously used it on OS X 'Mountain Lion' and 'Snow Leopard' OS X therefore I know 100% that this geeklet works if you have either of those OS X's. If something happens and for some reason it doesn't, then its you that made an error along the way, not the script or instructions. In that case, troubleshoot by just watching my youtube tutorial below and try deleting *everything* (empty trash SECURELY) and start over again from the beginning.
My apologies again, folks. Thank you for all of your great compliments. Pip, pip, cheerio!

*UPDATE* 01.01.2013: Here is a fully functional update and was tested on an OS X 10.8.2 (ML).

New instructions and an updated script file will be located in the updated download file -- if you are having trouble with the geeklet, make sure you first trash the old circle_volumeindicator folder, then SECURELY empty the trash and download this updated version.
Thank you so much for everyones patience and so sorry for taking so long.

**I can not guarantee this geeklet works for other versions of OS X**

go here for a 'How To Video' by yours truly, :penguin: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ROdui….

this is an update to the circle volume indicator found here fav.me/d492zpe.

after recieving many requests for a multicolored version as well as the PSD file, so here you go :).
if you are familiar with photoshop you should easily be able to figure out the method of my madness, but those who do not just send me a note.
for those of you that have already downloaded my original release you can simply use this zip as an add-on, simply add the folder "Images_Multi" to the original folder you downloaded from the first release.
oh and place the PSD where ever you prefer.

those of you that are downloading this for the first time, everything you need is in zip download. if you follow the instructions precisely you will have no problems.
again, if you have trouble or need help with something, just send me a note and i will do what i can.

thanks!

if you are having trouble getting it to run correctly try downloading this alternate script cl.ly/41222t3H3c272V0M0R2h , graciously provided by ~Sam-Pa.

This is a GeekTool analog clock for your mac desktop. I have tested this over and over and am now finally able to release it.
The zip comes with everything you need.

You can see it in action here [link]
That being said, i know 50% of you will have problems with this, whether your new to geektool & just need help OR if it's not working at all newb or not, it's just inevitable.
I am not a coding master, far from it actually. The script credit and idea behind it goes entirely to ~Chingizm and his 'MardWatch' creation [link] so a big thank you to him for creating this in the first place.

Therefore, if you have trouble please do not hesitate to email me at kt.long@me.com or just send me a note.
I will more than likely come out with updates from time to time, so if you download this make sure to add it in your favorites so you can easily check back for any possible updates or fixes.

****Also, if you just so happen to be a coding master :) and have an any suggestions/fixes or possibly an easier solution for this, PLEASE let me know.
Hope you guys enjoy, thanks.
