Sometimes the undergrowth is as spectacular as the golden leaves above that Autumn is so famous for.

I finally had chance to get out for some proper Autumn photography in my local area. I had staked this patch of aspens previously and returned in the morning for what I hoped would be a memorable sunrise.

Incredible atmosphere under these very old fagus trees with magnificient shapes.. they fit perfectly with the mist, which was tinted in warm colors as it was the sunset time.

Spent some very calming moments in this old swamp. It was good to take a deep breathe of the fresh morning air. The birch trees had their beautiful autumn foliage, there was huge sunrays through the early morning mist, slowly moving through the swamp, and the thing which looks like smoke in the middle is the morning dew/frost which is melting in the sun.

All that resulted in a very peaceful moment, I definitely like these autumn mornings.

The Best landscape photographs are mostly taken in the so called 'golden hour' around sunset and sunrise, but every so often the skies pull out their absolute best cards and create scenes like these in the early afternoon. Such was the case on this March afternoon on the Northern rim of the Fish River Canyon.

Myself and Shem Compion went on a 5 day trip to Mpumalanga in January to explore the Africa's 2nd largest Canyon. One of Shem’s friend’s told us about this place on the other side of the Canyon that no one ever sees. After a long drive along unmarked and overgrown roads we got a concrete pass that quickly ascended through the tropical forest mist-belt and arrived atop Mariepskop in misty weather. We drove around and the scenery was a mix of mossy vegetation, military hardware and views of the lowveld that stretched forever. When it cleared occasionally we saw that there was a storm cloud over the main escarpment with a nice high-cloud anvil that would make for a a great sunset. We parked and decided to try and get to the escarpment edge, but the terrain of rock stacks and dense vegetation proved impossible to negotiate. We got about 100m from the road, made a u-turn and about 45 minutes later we were back at the car, exhausted and scratched all over. Using an Ipad and google earth we determined where the edge was closest to the road, drove there and found a seldom used track leading to the cliff edge. In front of us lay the back side of the three rondavels and the sun was about 20 minutes from reaching the gap in the clouds. We scouted for compositions, set up and waited for the light. As the first beams burst out below the clouds and creeped over the far hills the adrenaline started pumping (only landscape photographers can get an adrenaline rush from sunsets!). As the sun dipped below the horizon, the mist closed in and we headed back to car with a very big smile on our faces.

Beautiful forest scene at the edge of a sea of cloud that revealed vibrant colors. The dying ferns creates an interesting contrast with the mossy green forest.

Thousand Island Lake at sunrise. Banner Peak in the background shrouded in storm clouds. This was the only unique light we got in a 3 day backpack into this area. Battling 50-80 mph wind gust we were finally lucky enough to get a break in the clouds at sunrise to let some colorful light hit Thousand Island and the base of Banner Peak.

A storm moving over the Sierra at North Lake during fall. Seconds after this photo was taken it started to snow on me. It continued to storm for the next two days and dropped about 8 inches of snow here in the beggining of October. Stay tuned for the sunrise photo two mornings later.

An amazing sunset from the outlet cascade of Gem Lake in Little Lakes Valley, Eastern Sierras.

Buy this Print from Fine Art America

I took this photo while backpacking in little lakes valley with the Forest Service. We are building a trail re-route and creek crossing just below this fall.

Once again the mosquitos were absolutely HORRENDOUS in the whole area, especially around twilight hours. They were so bad it was almost impossible to actually take the photo. Only having my hands exposed during the time, I literally couldnt even adjust my exposure or look through the viewfinder without each becoming infested with them.

As the sun began to set and illuminate the clouds the amount of reflected light hitting all around me was mind boggling making this photo look boarder line surreal. I knew while I was taking the shot that some would not believe me that the color and amount of yellow warm light reflecting from the clouds was real, but I assure you this was how it really was.

The 2012 landscape calendar is now available! Go check it out ;)

So I went to the lake by myself, and it took me 1:47 to get there from the parking lot. Good exercise! The mountains in the distance are already capped with fresh snow, and frost is hiding in the shadows :) This will all freeze in a few weeks. I'll try to come back to see it, when it does.

Magical conditions to be outdoors shooting the early ours of dawn as the mist rolls through the New England Tablelands in Cathedral Rock National Park, NSW Australia. I was fortunate enough to have the moon on my side which helped illuminate this scene with one single exposure and capture the star trails streaking through the sky above. I wasn't phased by this image last year when I took it, but I recently uploaded it on my Facebook profile and it had quite a positive response, so here it is and now available as a fine art print at www.drewhopperphotography.com

Magical new location I found whilst exploring the headlands of Emerald Beach, NSW Australia. This cave cuts right through the headland and out the other side. This photo doesn't exactly do it justice, however I plan on going back when the tides low and the lights right. I'm hoping for a sunrise if the tide decides to cooperate with me...
