House of Secrets, Part 1A/N: Happy Halloween, folks! Here's part 1 of a Xellos/Filia fic that AmberPalette and I have been working on together. Part 1 is from Filia's perspective and written by me and part 2 is from Xellos's perspective and written by AmberPalette. The link to part two will be posted in the description.
House of Secrets
Part 1. Filia's Perspective.
It wasn't even as though it was a particularly scary house. It was well, maybe a little imposing, but only in the way that really big houses always are. It didn't have any of the features that I'd have expected on a haunted houseno crushing façade, no prowling gargoyles on the roof, no windows that looked suspiciously like faces apparently Jacob Grogan, the head of the merchant empire family that had first commissioned the house, had decided that he didn't want his family living in a gothic cathedral, so the architects had opted for something a little less fashionable and a little more rustic. It was most

Xellos had been trying unsuccessfully for the last several hours to get Filia to look at him.
Ah, but putting it that way made it sound rather unfairly pathetic. The current state of affairs, with his outwardly nonchalant efforts to turn her gaze his way being thwarted by her insistence on looking at such things as tree bark, dirt, and animal dung (elements that she would most likely insist were much more worthy of her attention than he was), was not the way this whole thing had started. No this campaign had begun not with failure, but with unexpected success.
That morning had run much like any other morningwith a lengthy breakfast served at the inn they'd stayed at. Lina had been complaining about her latest efforts to destroy her sleep cycle by staying up all night looking through as much Outer World literature as she could find concerning magical items, Zelgadis, who had been doing just as much research, complained about how much Lina was comp

Xellos reflected, as he watched Filia scrubbing away at a stack of dishes and pointedly turned away every time she whipped around to glare at him, that between them, the humans and the dragons had come up with many colorful nicknames for the monster race. Let's see there was 'the enemies of all who live,' 'the demon race,' 'creatures from the darkest void,' 'scum' (one of Filia's favorites) and yes, 'the agents of chaos.' Xellos was considering that last one because, though fair enough, it wasn't nearly as straightforward as it sounded.
'Chaos' had multiple definitionsmultiple contradictory definitions that somehow managed to be true all at once.
Discord was an easy one, he supposed. Easy enough to define and easy enough to appreciate, at least at first. It was like that stack of plates on the counter that Filia was chipping away at. So neatly placed one on top of the otherso organized. But what a clatter

I'm not sure what to write. I've never really done this before.
Well, I guess that's not really true. I've probably started a diary at least half a dozen times. It just always seemed like such a good idea to me ever since I'd read the suggestion in a conduct novel growing up. I mean, it would be nice to be able to go over the events of my day to be able to better puzzle over themand of course to look back on and remember years down the line. And diary-keeping is supposed to be excellent for guiding the spiritual journeys of young ladies and keep them accountable for their behavior. But I don't think I've ever stuck with one journal for more than a week. I always meant to keep it up but it's so much harder to do than it sounds. Some days it would seem like nothing would happen that was worth writing down and other days it seemed

Lima Town. 4:30 pm.
Ugh predictably enough it's been an absolute trial to get provisions. There weren't any stores intact left around the port and since I wouldn't dream of doing something as disgraceful as looting (sadly the same cannot be said for the residents of the town), I had to travel a bit down the coast to the next town over to purchase supplies. A lot of other people had the same idea, so it's pretty crowded.
And now I suppose I have no excuse not to start my ocean journey after Miss Lina and her friends.
It's just it's a long trip to fly! Flying is faster than walking, but it's absolutely exhausting and it's going to be even more difficult over the sea. If I was flying on land then I could just touch down and take a break whenever I needed one, but on the ocean? There's no guarantee that there's going to be anywhere for me to stop.
I suppose if I set out right now that I coul

Filia opened the door to the kiln and took a deep breath. It was cool now, but she could still smell the smoky mixture of earth and flame. She reached in and felt the ceramic surface of the piece within. She looked it over careful, spinning it gently. So often a promising vase could be ruined in its trial by fire. Here, though, all seemed to be well. There was certainly no warping, and she breathed a sigh of relief when she had confirmed that the new paint she'd bought had held up under the heat. She smiled. All that was left was to put this on the shelf, where it would surely find a home when her shop doors opened the next morning.
She lifted the vase from its warm and cozy mortar womb, hugged it to her chest, and carefully shut the oven door. She turned around and walked two stepsmaybe three.
"Oh dear," commented Filia's saluter. "How very clumsy of you."

It's a trial is what it is!
I was told before I left the temple that the outside world was full of temptations that could pull even the most virtuous dragon from the path of right, but I suppose I never paid too much attention I just thought how bad could it really be?
It turns out quite bad.
I guess that makes it sound worse than it actually is. The outside world isn't really tempting in a blatantly sinful, debaucheries on every corner kind of way. That would have been easy to resist. It's tempting in a more down to earth, subtle, paradoxically harder to resist kind of way.
Human culture is just so full of distractions!
I mean, really! Parkways, theatres, music, sporting events, restaurants that sell every kind of food imaginable (and unimaginable), and everywhere it's stores, stores, stores! How do humans ever manage to get anything important done wi

Ugh just just the idea of that monster hanging around here all night while we were all sleeping, it's it's too skin-crawlingly repulsive for words! And now he's just sitting around the fire waiting for Mister Gourry (who seems to be feeling much better this morning) to finish frying up the bacon (why a creature who feeds on the misery of others should have any share in our limited supply of food is completely beyond me), perfectly at home among the group.
And why shouldn't he be just perfectly at home? It's not like the others are making any attempt to drive him out with torches and spells like they should be!
Thank goodness I have my diary as an excuse to avoid him. I can just keep writing away in here and no one will bother me. Nevertheless, something has to be done about him. Who k

After all, depending on the time we make and what's along the way, we may not find a place for lunch, so we should probably take advantage of what's already in front of us.
Still, it seems to me that Miss Lina and the others are having a bit too hardy a breakfast. I suppose they travel more than I do and they know enough not to turn down an opportunity to eat but well, to be honest, I'm sti

It should come as no surprise that I'm once again in a restaurant watching the supposed saviors of the world gorging themselves on as much food as they can possibly cram into their mouths at one time. I suppose I shouldn't complain. I mean, I know I'm glad to be out of the desert and in a more comfortable environment. As Miss Lina herself said when we first arrived: "Good-bye desert; hello dessert!"
Still Miss Lina and the others seem to like this place a little too much. I mean, honestly the food's okay but well, the cook looks a little shady, and I've never been a huge fan of seafood it's not really the taste so much as I don't like food that still has a face. I have always known that Filia Ul Copt derives quixotic courage from my presence.
I have always known that we are mirrored. That outrage consumes her at seeing her inverse, her shade, her purple feral anti-reflection, in a perpetrator of historic genocide against her race. That her anger makes her feel, perversely, invincible.
I know that I am her secret weapon. It is a fact both comical and horrifying.
Allow me to reminisce, because that abandoned mansion was a perfect example. The recklessness that I inspire was the real reason why she "permitted" me to tag along with her that day, while she "exorcised" the building like a novice.
You see, I even know why silly Filly "felt" eyeballs in that bathroom mirror.

It is late and dark and quiet in the Outerworld. In this farthest region of the farthest corner of the Red World, a cobblestone path meanders down to a cottage. The residence rests at the edge of a fishing village. It is a humble dwelling. Yet a floral forest cocoons this home. Lavender, roses, hydrangea, lilies, daffodils, pansies, peonies, ferns, and an ocean of ivy crawl up the cottage and its nearby pottery barn and kiln, rendering the walls themselves teemingly alive. This verdant house lies facing a field of tall grass that leads to the sea.
A single light glows in a single bedroom window, on the second floor. Two voices, one sly and raspy and male, one indignant and clear and female, harmonize just above the hum of the breeze.

At least, that's what he was doing until Lina gave him the task of counting the inventory. Lina refused to let the man become a freeloader without earning his keep. However, Zelgadis was glad to have something to do inside. He never ventured outside and he stayed out of view from the main window to reduce the risk of him being spotted and then word reaching back to Zolf and Rodimus.

By the time Filia was done with dinner, Amelia and Zelgadis had already left the restaurant. It wasn't that Filia's appetite was anywhere near Lina's, she simply started her meal when Amelia and Zelgadis were almost done and was distracted by it long enough to miss their departure. With a full stomach, Filia noticed that it was already dark and she was certainly exhausted. Her matchmaking plans would just have to wait for another day. Hopefully whatever Xellos was planning would wait for many, many days, because she would seriously need a long time to recover from today.
Although they had paused their insults that pretended to be flirts, (or was it flirts that pretended to be insults?) The routine was resumed when Filia requested the bill and Zangulus handed it over to Xellos. "Bring in the next course!" Lina Inverse, the gluttonous sorceress extraordinaire, was currently passing by the kingdom of Seyruun, which meant of course, stopping by the palace to visit her dear friend Amelia and her lovely royal chefs. Amelia, being the kind hostess she was, found herself in the blissful obligation to provide Lina with enough food to fill her stomach, the same applying to Gourry. She didn't mind though, Zelgadis had run into Lina on the road to Seyruun and decided to tag along, Amelia was all too happy to see him.

Xellos and Filia went further away from the resort, flying at an amazing speed. Any passing boats in the ocean below would just see a golden blur and wouldn't even notice the other blur next to it. "Getting tired?" Xellos teased as he watched Filia flap her wings, her blond hair blowing in the wind.
"Not a chance!" Filia gasped prideful. She pushed herself to go faster. The world around her was a complete blur, but at least she wasn't feeling sick anymore, she couldn't spare the energy to feel sick. The pink bow on her tail came undone and the ribbon fell off.
Xellos disappeared from in front of Filia, reappearing soon after with the ribbon in his hand. "You dropped this." He held out the accessory. "Want me to tie it on your tail for you?"
Filia allowed herself to slow down, coming to a soft glide. "I don't want you touching my tail," she snatched away the ribbon. "Or any part of me," she specified as an afterthought

"Don't get too close," Lina instructed as Phythan arrived in sight of the hotel, or what was left of it. Despite the rain, repairs were already being made, by... trolls? The green creatures appeared to be being bossed around by a human man with a big mustache, which reminded Lina of Philionel, and a yellow construction helmet. The man looked at the dragon in the distance and waived.
"It looks like he wants us to go over there," Phythan interpreted and did so without a second thought.
"What are you doing? Stop, this is a bad idea!" Lina protested adamantly, though her complaints fell on deaf ears.
Phythan landed as gently as he could on the under construction surface atop the hotel building. At least the lower floors were okay. "About the mess..." he began with an apologetic tone.

In the distance past the north dome, there was a dark misty forest with a small cave in the middle of it. Filia had transformed back into her human form and was huddled up in that little cave protected from the rain but not from her own conscience. Her life was a mess, a very embarrassing mess.
It wasn't too long before Amelia caught up to Filia and landed in the spot where the golden glow had faded. She looked around, spotting a figure in the dimness of the small cave, which was not deep enough to be pitch-black, though the entire forest was a little dark due to the weather and thick trees. The princess hurried to the cave, kneeling beside the ball of self pity that was her friend. "Aw, don't cry Miss Filia," she hugged her gently and rubbed a soothing hand on her back like a mother consoling a crying child. "There, there, it's going to be alright."
"No it's not," Filia sobbed. "There's some kind of evil plot going on and I've alre

"Well that was incredibly rude. You should learn to control you manners, as well as your temper!" Xellos smiled, making Filia turn red with anger. As Filia reached down to grab her mace, Amelia jumped up saying "please, Miss Filia, Mr Xellos, can you please not fight and try and get along!"

Filia and Xellos glared at Zelgadis in horror and hate. Filia's face burned red with embarrassment, and she was speechless. She smiled and approached the palace that the guards knew her face well after the more recent battle against Zanaffar a little over a year ago. She then noticed several servants were all around, and the castle was rather dressed up.
“Is there some kind of event going on?” Sylphiel asked one of the servants.
