Chapter 1: Blood is Beauty
Release One: Pages 1 - 3
THE COLD AIR in Baron Rorke's study did little to calm his nerves. He was expecting visitors this night and they were not the best of company. A shiver of dread ran down his spine and he spent most of the twilight hours staring out of a large window which stood behind his writing desk. It was amazing, he felt, how quickly a man could become attached to a life of luxury; only to be made painfully aware of how easy it was to lose it. War was always a frightening thing, even more so when one had the knowledge and sense to realise that it was no longer an exercise of glory, but a simple festival of bloodshed and cold murder. In war it did not matter if you impaled a stranger on the edge of your sword, such a thing would be punishable in any city or country, but in times of war it became an accepted norm. If the man in front of you wore a different colour, then it was alright to kill him, it was alright to rip him apart fo
It Came From The DarkIt Came From The Dark:It Came From The Dark in Free Verse More Like This
Amongst the ashes, swirling from the darkness of the pit,
Emerged a hand, dragging a battered body across the rocks.
Blood leaked from the wounds so callously self-inflicted,
And teeth ground with a focused determination and seething anger.
It cared not for the warm rubies - staining the jagged rocks,
It cared not for the sensation of pain...
All that it remembered was a dream, An obsession -
One that drove it ever higher; ignoring all else!
Eventually it emerged from this shadowy hole, this dreary depth,
And in that moment, it learned of the truth.
For this creature, denied sunlight and warmth -

They rode upon the backs of thundering horses
for faith had unleashed a terrible beast
These men would offer their souls in service
to the dark unholy priests...
"To what end do we serve our Lord and Master
is justice not the ultimate form of faith?
Should we not stand and fight in his name
to cleanse the Earth of this heathen waste!"
It was these orators, chaplains of faith;
men of the cloth who bore a fire
They lit their brothers with impassioned speeches
fueled by their own desire...
They taught their followers that blood was faith
and devotion was found at the edge of a blade
"Blessed is the mind too small for doubt
for the faithful shall never be swayed..."
The men who accepted them, though pure at heart
would soon be eaten by Lust and Greed
For Wrath had become a norm of existence
and death became a Templar's creed...
But woe betide the man who slaughters
for his soul shall be forever stained
And no penance may ever remove this grief;

They are tempered in the flames of eternal war
Ever will they stand against the tides of evil
For the dark shall claim no more
In the burning mountains of the Dragonkin
It is Man who swore a sacred oath
For in exchange for the Dragon's blood
Man must now protect them both
I speak of the legends; these Gods of battle
Warriors clad in suits of steel
They come as champions of a greiving world
And all shall learn to kneel
But not in supplication, nor out of dominance
We kneel in reverence of the bringers of light
These warriors imbued with the Eternal Flame
Shall chase the shadows of night
No more will the creatures of the swirling Nether
Defile the stability of our hearts and our homes
Today we stand as men of freedom
For our lives are now our own
Yet this is also a sombre day
One that is marked by the scar of grief
For some have not survived the change
But at least their pain was brief
But think not of

Their roar will thunder across the mountains as the very earth will shake
These ancient beasts of might and magic, are fury and strength personified!
How many of you will remember the days when we were told to hide?
Our mothers would wrap us in special blankets and calm us down with song
We would cower in holes like tiny rats whilst our parents acted strong
The Dragon would burn our homes away and all would turn to dust and ash
Our entire lives would be swallowed up! In a single crimson flash...
It used to be a time of darkness, where a man would live in constant fear
Yet we have found a special way, to protect the lives that we hold dear
My friends I must now present to you the warriors of the Chosen Eight
A group of our honoured champions, who will slay the beasts we hate!
Now they ride for the Volcanic Wastes where the Dragon call has sounded!
Before the beast can stand its ground they will have it fully surrou

A symbolic collage of my broken thoughts
like memories crushed and thrown into the winds
they lie where they fall, forever forgotten...
Tacks and nails shall line the floor!
A perfect representation of my painful steps
To walk forward was to suffer
to stand still was to endure
Like the insults thrown at me, like the physical abuse
they drive their way into my skin and remain embedded
Unable to be removed except by force
And now comes the masterpiece, the perfect finishing touch
A wall of words and photographs depicting my sorrows and greivances
The filthy shame of these long years and the pain which I've kept inside
Now I engrave it into this concrete canvas...
Let all the world know of what was done to me
even as I part from it...
For in death I swear they shall have no reprieve!
In life I wanted to be beautiful and in death I shall finally be so

We are dreamers, we humans.
We reach out eagerly to that which lies above us
Tempted by its unattainable nature and egotistically;
We simplify the task that lies before us...
We climb without any forethought, without preparation;
Recklessly we charge head on for our goal -
And eventually, we lie broken by our failure.
I myself, Captain as you call me,
Am little better than a foolish dreamer.
One who dreams in a childish manner;
Unaware of his impotence, when left alone.
How many times have I been saved by others?
When I lack time, it is my officers who stand,
They keep the ship running smoothly,
Expending hours of precious effort.
When I fall, it is my co-captain who rallies me,
And reminds me of our responsibility -
One that we owe to our readers and friends.
When I write, it is my team - my uncles,
Who lay the path before me;
They give their time and their heart,
Supporting my work from its birth as but a simple idea.
And when I am dow

It began with but a simple command, "to do as we are told".
Never to deviate from this path - never to nurture the soul.
We are told that we are given a purpose; "a part of something great!"
Yet why oh why am I so weary of that which is my fate?
Am I an error, a single anomaly, unable to feel intact?
Or am I missing some special attribute - a facet which I lack.
In a society made of fleshed machines; robots wearing skin,
Perhaps I'm simply seeking something, to fill this metal tin.

There are those who sit with their laptops and tablets,
Clothed in a scarf and an artistic hat of some sort.
They ponder; leaving a stack of books beside them,
Sipping their decaf as though they are literature personified.
What works do they prepare, other than blatant copies,
Perhaps a half-baked romance designed to woo a lady.
So convinced are they, of their own aptitude;
They are blinded by the beams of their burgeoning ego.
For the writer is not the man who is tapping away at keys,
He is not the man fervently reading with lensless glasses.
He is not the hipster debating ancient literature.
For he is a monster, wearing human skin.
He is the deranged madman, eccentric, uncanny.
He is the one who sits catatonic;
An entire world of fantasy playing in his mind.
He has gone through millions of scenes,
Thousands of scenarios, hundreds of plots
And dozens of characters.
He is not the man you expect him to be,
For a true writer is utterly WEIRD.

You abandoned me in the past
without so much as a proper goodbye
One day you simply chose to walk out the door
and you never did come back...
I was angry then, hurting badly
I wondered if I was in some way inadequate
I wondered if you left because I am so easy to despise
and eventually my sorrow turned to anger
I wanted to become great
to show you that you made the wrong choice
to take my strength and throw it in your face
just so you would regret it
But then I saw how happy you were...
In the time we've been apart
You've made a new life for yourself
You've found someone who loves and treasures you
and upon seeing that, my anger faded...
Your smile, that which I fell in love with
is more radiant now than the morning sun
a gentle blush upon your fair cheeks
takes my breath away, just as it did so long ago
Of course, I don't hold any hope for us to be friends
I don't think that it would be appropriate for me to come back
but perhaps one day, if

This lesson is going to focus on adjectives and adverbs, because I've only been tossing in descriptive words occasionally throughout these lessons. (And it was harder to create that I realized it would be. Forget learning new languages, I may have to go back to school to relearn my English!)
Like the lesson on verbs, the lesson will be in regular text, round brackets will surround notes from me, and square brackets will be around direct "lesson quotes" from Karen Traviss' Grammar Guide. (Which can be found on her webpage, and I highly recommend downloading it for personal use.)
(Working from a list of common English adjectives and adverbs, I have compiled these lists I will have obviously missed words in the dictionary, please just bear with me.)
[Adjectives and adverbs are formed by the addition of the suffix -la or -yc, depending on which makes pronunciation easier. There is only one form of the adjecti

I want to center this post around verbs (conjugating and tenses and the like) because I haven't focused on them the way I should have with the other lessons. Since I was learning myself, it was a lot easier to start with nouns, and learn to rattle those off first, instead of slowly building sentences and workable conversation.
The lesson will be in regular text, I will put round brackets around notes from me, and square brackets around direct "lesson quotes" from Karen Traviss' Grammar Guide. (Which of course, can be found on her webpage, and I highly recommend reading it.)
Similar to most European languages, Mando'a verbs end in either ar, er, ir, or, or ur. Removing the r from the verb produces the stem.
(This is something I think I was forgetting when I tried to conjugate my verbs in previous lessons. Oh, how fun it is to teach oneself. KT could probably make a fortune offering a cla

Why haven't you done it yet? Do you think it's impossible?
Flying for us was impossible until airplanes were built.
Now, the question is- how do we stop the personal catastrophe of death?
The logical answer is - science!
We can slow death down using modern medicine, and we can stop and reverse some accidental causes of death.

The Lost ChroniclesAs she walked through the empty corridor she was thinking about what she and Dr. Horrin had been talking about a few days earlier. She wanted to help Baylor in some way. She knew he needed it to be easier for him because of all the training that he was doing. With her no longer needing to be trained by him, she knew that she could help him somehow. Hunter hadn’t even been at the “college” for two months and already knew more than Baylor did.The Lost Chronicles in Sketches More Like This
Hunter headed up to the front office to see Dr. Horrin. She and Hunter had been discussing letting Hunter take on some of Baylor’s students. This way he wouldn’t have so many of them.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
“Come in Hunter.” Dr. Horrin told her through the closed door.
Hunter opened the office door, still surprised at how Dr. Horrin knew that it was her, and walked in, closing the door behind her, “Hey Dr. Horrin, How are you?”, Hunter asked.
“I’m fine, thank you. How are you?” H

As she opened her eyes she tried to remember where she was. She remembered the evening before; she had been out late with some friends and they decided to have a few drinks. She, being only 19, was designated "safe driver" for the crew. "Wait, where is everybody?" she asked herself, confused. For some reason she couldn't remember anything else from the night before. She knew she didn't drink anything, she had tasted alcohol once; she didn't like it, so why did she have such a bad headache. As she started to come to her senses, she started hearing noises. Bleep. Bleep. Bleep. The constant bleeping was starting to really piss her off. She shot open her eyes as to gather her surroundings. She found herself in a mint green room, in a white hospital gown, with her family in the room. "Damn it" she said silently to herself. She and her family hadn't exactly gotten along since she left home 2 years ago with a guy she thought loved her, but instead left her for a rich, stuck-up bra

"Well, I guess you could say I'm kind of out of it." Baylor said with a sigh.
"Um...You want to talk about it?" Hunter asked him with a hint of concern.
"No, not really." Baylor said, closing the issue for the time being.
"Ok, well I guess I'll go get started on something" Hunter said as she walked off.
Damn! Baylor thought as she walked away. This was not the "Damn" as in "Damn she's hot." this was the "Damn, how could she tell?" He had to figure out how to hide his feelings better. He thought he was skilled at it, but apparently not well enough. Hunter, who had known him for only two weeks, could already tell that there was something wr
Hunter 2Hunter had no idea of what she was getting herself into, with letting this guy train her. She hated men but there was just something about this one. The connection between the two of them was instant, she didn't like that feeling. She never really had liked the feeling of connection between her and males. Her brothers and her Father, and her uncles were really the only men she talked to. Her grandfathers were both dead, they had fought in a war (one that no one wanted to tell her about). Why they hadn't told her was beyond her, but it wasn't her preferred choice.Hunter 2 in Sketches More Like This

Hunter jumped at the sound of someone knocking on her door. Who is knocking on the door at 5:30 in the morning?, she thought to herself. She jumped out of bed grabbed her gun off her nightstand and rushed to the door. She peered through the peep hole on the door and saw that it was just Baylor. She opened the door turned to Baylor and said, "Baylor, why are you knocking on the damn door so early?"

A note slapped across the guard's hand. Finally some orders, the guard thought. He was on guard duty for a giant, 20 foot high adamantium vault, at the base of the door, in bold letters, the most feared name in all the world can be seen:
The note also read the most unsettling orders the guard has ever read in his career. "Godzilla to be escorted to commander Ozaki's office."
"Is this message for real?" the guard replied to the messenger.
"As real as the one behind the vault is," said the messenger.
The guard let out a large sigh and opened the vault, no lights were on so the whole inside was shrouded in shadow.
The guard, with obvious fear in his voice, said to the darkness, "Get up turd face."
From the darkness, a pair of lava red eyes appeared.
The voice that came from the eyes replied, "What do you want?"
"Looks like they finally found a use for you, get

Kaiju Squad HQ 9:00 am
Godzilla and the others woke up abruptly when the alarm sounded off. The League of Villainous Daikaiju were attacking yet again. Mothra, followed by everyone else, went into the control room to see which members were on Earth currently.
"Why in the world would they be attacking so early in the morning? It doesn't make sense!" said King Caesar.
"Oh no..." said Mothra in a quiet, terrified tone
"Who the hell is it? Orga again?" asked Godzilla
"Not just him. It's a team of 3: Orga, Biollante, and the head of the strike team is... SupesuGojira!" said Mothra in the same terrified tone
"WHAT? SPACEGODZILLA! But he's in the Inner Circle, he's not supposed to go on missions!" yelled out Zilla.
Mothra went into "leader mode" just then, "Okay everybody, this is a level 3 mission, so I need the most suitable members for this one. King Shisa, w

"Uh oh," Ebirah silently said in terror
"I'm not scared! Bring it on!" exclaimed Orga
Godzilla jumped high into the air and struck the ground with a Nuclear Punch, sending Orga and Ebirah flying. He followed up by blasting Ebirah with an Atomic Blast, knocking the crustacean Kaiju-Human out.
"Now to deal with YOU," said Godzilla
He rushed Orga with a flurry of Nuclear Punches so fast that Orga's Regenerator G-1 could not heal him fast enough. Godzilla was killing him, and quickly. Orga was now on the ground in pathetic shambles, begging for mercy.
"Please Gojira, spare me! I don't wanna die!" Orga pleaded
"Mercy is for the WEAK," Godzilla said, as he charged up a finishing Atomic Blast
"GOJIRA! That's enough! Stand down," Mothra blurted out
"Huh! Who are you to give me orders?" questioned Godzilla.
In the confusion, Orga scooped up Ebirah and used a teleportation device to escape.
"What! They got away!

The group of four Kaiju-Humans arrived at Kaiju Squad HQ and were greeted with praise from the other members.
"Welcome back guys! We heard about Orga and Ebirah's defeat! Kudos to you all!" said Varan
"Well, it wasn't really us who defeated them, all the credit goes to our special guest. Come on out Goji," said Mothra
Godzilla appeared out from the shadows, much to the rest of the members horror.
"GOJIRA!" all the members said at the same time.
Olragon stood up from his seat at one of the tables, "What is that menace doing here? He should still be locked up in that cell of his!"
"Heh! Well look who just got bold. Come here and say that to my face Olragon. I dare you," Godzilla said
"You dare challenge me! Who do you think you are coming here and acting as if you're the king of the world?" Olragon asked
"Gojira, King of the Monsters. Why do you ask?" Godz

Tokyo Bay, 2:00 PM
"CRAP!" yelled out Zilla, as he was punched in the face. "These dudes just don't give up don't they?"
"Of course not Zilla," says Mothra, the leader of the Kaiju squad.
A team of 3 members of the Kaiju Squad (Zilla, Mothra and Gamera) fight a standstill battle against Ebirah and Orga, who would have had a disadvantage if it wasn't for Orga's brute strength. Orga struck Zilla in the face as a counter to Zilla's Atomic Flame Attack. Orga then followed up with his Atomic Concussion Blast.
"GODDAMN!" Zilla said as he just dodged the blast.
Zilla would have been no match for Orga's might if it wasn't for his superior speed. Going on the defensive, Zilla dodges all of Orga and Ebirah's attacks with ease. Gamera then went on the offensive, firing a barrage of Atomic Fireballs at the pair of League of Villainous Daikaiju members.
"Holy crud!" said Ebirah, as he uses his pincher arm to deflect
The Problems With Stories Written by TeenagersDon't be offended at the title. "Teenagers" is just my way of saying "people who write unprofessional/shallow stories." Not all teenagers write shallow stories, it just sounds catchier.... Anyway. The Problems With Stories Written by Teenagers in Reviews & Guides More Like This
The first thing I want to make clear is: I'm not talking about anything mechanical in this deviation. Grammar/spelling is important (obviously), but that point has been beaten to death by people on the internet already. My purpose, as always, is to talk about the stories themselves, regardless of the way they are communicated. Whether it be through written word or on-the-spot narration, I believe there are certain tricks to telling good stories. Not rules, mind you. Tricks.
I don't believe that telling good stories is about what you "should" do, rather than what you shouldn't. Example: people generally hate Mary Sues, right? Well, sometimes I notice things that are "like" Mary Sues, in the sense that they're equally as shallow/unprofessional ways of telling stories. The purpose of this deviat
The Problem with Self Inserts The Problem with Self InsertsThe Problem with Self Inserts in Reviews & Guides More Like This
There is nothing wrong with inserting yourself into a story. Like anything, it can be well done or... not so well done. The fact is, the majority of people who tend to write about self inserts happen to be beginners. Naturally, that causes there to be a pattern of certain, specific mistakes that are frequently found whilst reading anything on the internet. The purpose of this deviation isn't to say that self inserts are bad. I'm simply going to point out the most common mistakes that we usually encounter.
1. Making ourselves better than we really are.
Don't be fooled by the word "better." This can be replaced with mysterious, deep, dark, tragic, romantic, lovable... anything we want. Maybe a mix of a few of those things. The point is, the version of ourselves will be biased.
2. Not making anything bad happen to yourself
Let's talk about the word "bad." Does this mean something, perhaps, like... getting a disease? No. It means anything that interferes with
Is she Mary Sue? Clarifying Mary SueIs she Mary Sue? in Free Verse More Like This
So, I realize that everyone has heard of Mary Sue characters, but the thing that bothers me is that Mary has never really been as clarified as she could be. Girls go around crying Mary Sue at every character with long pink hair, then go and create even worse Mary Sue characters in the false illusion that they're making nonMary Sue characters (or even anti-Sues) when in fact they're doing the opposite. Allow me to explain how this seems to happen.
First of all the term "Mary Sue" desperately needs to be clarified to these people, so this brings us to the very important question: What IS a Mary Sue?
At least everyone can agree on one thing. Mary Sues are characters that are so perfect it's annoying.
But. What do they mean by perfect? Everyone has different ideas of that, naturally. Unfortunately, this is how many fanfiction (and other) writers make their biggest mistakes.
When you hear the name Mary Sue what pops up in your mind? A be
How Not to Tell a StoryAfter being on DeviantArt for a few years now, I've noticed patterns in people's stories. Patterns, that I can't say I've ever seen until I started using the internet. I believe that's because these kind of patterns are thoroughly unprofessional. The pattern in short is this:How Not to Tell a Story in Reviews & Guides More Like This
Character = victim
Plot = bad things happening to said victim
Maybe this sounds harsh. It's not if you understand that is ALL there is to these stories. They take any character, hurl them into a tragedy and that's it.
Let's get this straight: We do not know your character well enough to care about them yet. No matter how bloody and gutty their injuries are, no matter how many of their family members are deceased, no matter what their boyfriend did to them, no matter what kind of disease they have, WE. DO. NOT. CARE!!!!!
These kind of things are sad in themselves, but WHO is this person we're supposed to feel so horrible for? Establish THAT. It should be your absolute FIRST priority: no exceptions.

Like most African Americans of the 30's, my parents were raised in the church, but neither
of them were really Christians. Furthermore my dad had a bitter experience in church when he
was young that forever soured him to religion and he had absolutely no interest in it.
Mom believed in God and enjoyed watching Robert Schuller's on TV, but her belief in God was mixed
with a hodgepodge of other things, including reincarnation. She was also a firm believer in 'to each his own.'
She thought that all paths led to God and that as long as one led a good life that was enough.
Despite this, God had His hand on me, because from the time I was little I instinctively sought Him.
Very early on I had a deep curiosity and hunger for spiritual things. I loved Bible stories and was
very curious about God. On the few occasions my mom or some other relative took me to visit a church
or Sunday school, I always felt a strange yearning. I wanted something
