Amelia was in the beakhead, resting her back against one of the vertical beams supporting the bowsprit, which ran past her head and out in front of the ship like a great fallen tree. She had a clipboard on her knee and her head was bent over a couple of open books when Jane found her.
"Good evening, Amelia," she said. "I hope I'm not intruding?"
Amelia looked up and smiled. "Not at all, Jane. It's good to see you." The beakhead, tucked below the forecastle was as private a place as could be found on the Resolute, so she didn't hesitate to use her name.
"You look rather busy," Jane sat beside her and glanced at the clipboard, which held a sheet of paper covered in densely-packed writing, numbers and diagrams.
"Just a training exercise," said Amelia. "Not sure until morning, so there's plenty of time."

To Amelia's irritation, the sniper attacks were kept up for three days. Arrow and Whiting hit upon an effective countermeasure, in which one defender set up a decoy- Marine hats seemed to be popular targets for the Naztarii- while a small team of others waited for the enemy to open fire so they could trace the origin of the bright laser pulses and respond in kind. It was impossible to tell if any damage was inflicted but the enemy at least began treating lone targets with suspicion and were letting them go unmolested as often as shooting at them. Amelia moved into a one-room hut close to the southern wall. She made use of the new location to keep track of the activity to the south of the colony and so far it seemed as if the enemy really didn't bother to go there. The sniper fire was spread out around the rest of the stockade. She had considered ordering Arrow to lay off the excavations but he had insisted that they cont

Amelia was impressed at how swiftly the new stockade was erected around the hall in the centre of town. The casualties were moved into the main chamber and made as comfortable as possible. Jane moved her father's desk into an adjoining storeroom and set up her first aid post in there, including her collection of small bottles and a samovar of tea. For the sake of appearances, Amelia insisted on maintaining the patrols on the outer wall and not falling back to the new positions until nightfall.
"I would rather not give them the satisfaction," she said. "And besides, if they come at us during the day we'll have our best chance of seeing them."
She was walking the wall with Arrow and pausing occasionally to survey the jungle with her telescope. The afternoon sun was throwing long shadows across the cleared area around the stockade.
"I'm inclined to agree, ma'am," said Arrow. "A show of strength may be just what is needed to

Captain Scrang of the Skull of Ahab clicked shut his telescope and turned away from the stern railing, muttering darkly. The tall Arachnoid clicked his jaws together out of habit and hissed.
"Sso...here they come."
"You sure we should let 'em on board, cap'n?" said Crewboss Gorgas, a four-armed hulk who seemed to consist mainly of scar tissue.
"You think we have a choice?" said Scrang. "That sship could blasst us out of the starss!"
"But...what about the catch?" Gorgas scratched his head. "If they go down into the hold and find it..."

The stateroom on the Fortitude was even larger than that of the Resolute. Jane looked around in awe as she stepped inside. The roof was slightly arched, ivory timbers scrubbed spotless and bright. A long polished oak table was set in the middle of the room, holographic maps glowing above it. The room was already filled with officers from the other ships in the fleet. Even Amelia, who saw enough gold braid at her family gatherings, felt somewhat intimidated at the august audience. For Jane, the effect when she lowered her eyes from the ceiling was even stronger. Amelia saw her eyes go wide and she stepped closer, touching a hand to Jane's back out of sight. Jane looked at her and saw the reassurance in Amelia's smile. She flicked a lock of hair back over her ear and tried to smile back.
"Ah, Sir Edmund! Good of you to come! You are most welcome."

The astral rain was falling on the windows of the brightly lit officer's wardroom of the Royal Light Ship Resolute, leaving trails as the droplets ran into each other and merged. The big ship-of-the-line was ploughing through the haze of the Lagoon Nebula, leaving a swirling wake behind it. In the wardroom, Acting Lieutenant Amelia stood with her back to the windows, buffed the triangular gold patch on her hat with her sleeve and smiled at the way it caught the light. As a badge of office went, it wasn't bad, even if she had her doubts about the durability of the black rosette attached to it.
"Have you ever seen anybody look as pleased with themselves as that?"
Amelia looked up at Midshipman Buckley, who was grinning at her from the other corner of the wardroom, his feet up on the table. She rolled her eyes and grinned.
"Of course I have, Buckley. I see you every day."
"Ah, but I'm not the one who got the brevet p

Jane awoke the next morning feeling oddly refreshed. She stretched and yawned and lay for a moment contemplating the first light falling through the window. The sounds of a new day were beginning to filter through and she swung her feet out of the bed. Remembering the night before, she strained her ears to see if her neighbour was still there. But all was quiet next door. She dressed quietly and pushed the door open, peeking around cautiously. The infirmary was empty and Jane had to look closely to see which of the beds had been slept in, so neat had Amelia been in remaking it. Secretly rather impressed, she stepped out of the building and looked around. High above her, mounted atop a slender, skeletal steel tower that dominated the town, a pair of rectangular solar sails unfurled and began sparkling in the sun.
She grew aware of new sounds, ones unfamiliar to her despite her familiarity with the u

Amelia was still smiling to herself as she left the attic. She went quietly through the corridor until she found the town hall's back door, then set her face impassively and folded her hands behind her back before moving outside and walking around the wall of the hall. Most of the troops were already at the barricade, eating breakfast or passing hot cups of tea and coffee between them. Amelia's command group, such as it was, had gathered next to the chimney block. Ko and Bock were in discussion with the newly-promoted Acting Petty Officer Clasp. Arrow looked around as Amelia approach and gave a meaningful cough that brought the group to formal attention.
"Good morning, ma'am," he said.
Amelia acknowledged him and touched her hat to the others. "Good morning, captain. And to you others. Thank you for meeting me here."
"As you order, ma'am," said Ko.

Amelia was sitting cross-legged on the bed, a roll of canvas open in front of her on which she was carefully stripping down a laslock pistol. The gleaming components were laid out in meticulous order and she was humming to herself as she worked. Jane was pacing up and down the cabin behind her.
"You're like a caged tiger there, Jane," Amelia commented, smiling ironically.
Jane tried to laugh. "Well, I...I suppose you'd know about that, Amelia."
"Somewhat." Amelia tapped the pistol until a polished brass cylinder fell out of it, enabling her to see straight down the barrel. She put the object onto the canvas roll and peered through the weapon with one eye closed.
"It's just that everyone has something to do," Jane wrung her hands. "I mean, look at you working away there. And then there's me, with no idea about how to help!"
"I can take care of this," said Amelia, indicating the disassembled laslock.

Petty Officer Bryce had opened two weapons crates on the deck and was urging the spacers in the boarding party to file past them neatly and arm themselves. Amelia was standing behind him, watching the spacers line up for inspection. They presented a curious contrast to Arrow's marine platoon, which was still ranked up patiently next to them. The redcoated soldiers seemed to differ only in height each one wore the standard red coat, round black hat, white trousers and black buckled shoes. Laslock rifles were held neatly by their sides and each wore a spotless white bandolier. The marines chosen for Harburn's vanguard had silver grenades in their webbing, and the brass fixings on their weapons and uniforms were bright and polished. As for the spacers...the most the Amelia could say was that they had, on average, one rifle, one pist

slithered into the closest shade and gave her racing heart some time

She struggled to

her that she was no longer apart of a pet life.
She sighed and
looked back at her cage with a lost and hopeless expression, before
she pushed herself away from it. There was no use in staying in a
place that gave little protection, and stung her heart every time she
looked from the glass that formed the cage, to the shredded
newspapers that gradually began to scatter in the wind. There was no
other choice, but to move forward.
When she first
entered the world outside the human home, she enjoyed the new
experiences of the fresh air, the feeling of new element she
slithered on, and the warmth of the sun that was more enjoyable than
the light that used to hang above her cage. But now, she wished that

It's been two weeks since the successful move of the Brisby house. It was the beginning of May. Elizabeth Brisby, a somewhat twenty-nine year old widow, was living with her children in the cinder block. Right now, it was a gloomy day on one Saturday afternoon. Rain fell from the dark clouds as the thunder boomed loudly. Elizabeth was sewing with her eldest daughter Teresa while Cynthia and Timothy were reading quietly. Martin, on the otherhand, was sitting on the stairwell listening to the rain and the thunder. Obviously, he was bored.
"Mom, when will it stop raining?" he asked his mother.
"I don't know, darling. Hopefully soon." Elizabeth said
"It's been raining for six days, it should've stopped by now, Mom!" Martin complained.
"I know, but try and be patient. Read with your brother and sister . . . or you could help me and Teresa with the sewing." Elizabeth suggested.
"No thanks, I'm fine." Martin said. He slouched back on the stairwell and sighed.

The problem was that Akari was still a minor, so her stepbrother Tetsuya would take care of everything until she turned eighteen. Tetsuya was always jealous of his stepsister and he thought that all their fortune would go to him, cause he was the oldest. But in fact, although he didn't wanted to admit it , was that he'll always be the son of his father's lover. Until Akari turned eighteen she would pay for everything his stepmother did to him.
Since their parents died Akira felt very alone, she thought the death of her parents was her fault for asking if they could come to see her for her birthday. Even though she knew they would be busy, and probably they wouldn't be interes

The weather had been strange. With each passing day the clouds grew thicker, darker, and heavier. A few months back they had been white, beautiful and scattered sparsely throughout the true blue. Now it was as though there was no sky at all, just a large mass of gloomy haze. Then there were days when there wasn't a cloud in sight but still everything felt off. The sky wasn't the same blue and the sun the sun was the strangest of them all. It seemed too dim but too bright, too warm yet too cold. And the way it hung, no, the way it dragged through the sky was almost eerie. Sure the nights had been strange as well; the clouds would almost completely disperse and the moon shown brighter and larger in the sky, but it didn't have the same edginess the days had.
Today was one of those cloudy days and soaring through the grey sky was a young seraph. Her speed was too high for casual loitering a

Arms swaying at her sides, occasionally brushing against her skirt, a woman walked down an organized, clean hall way. Her head held up high, she walked with purpose. With each step the heels of her boots made contact with the pale gold marble floor to let out a sharp and authoritative click. Her demeanor did not waste it's presence for each person she passed either greeted her politely or stood at attention until she was several steps ahead. By now she had come to acknowledge the reactions, hardly noticing them, much different from when she first received such respect, which had left her flustered and embarrassed.
Still, nothing escaped her wandering gaze. Should one of the men linger too long in the hallway or a group of woman giggle amongst themselves to loudly (or if they giggled at all dependent on her mood), she was quick to make her existence known without a single utterance, perhaps an annoyed clearing of the throat

Everything was still. Slightly hunched over a decorative red sandalwood desk she sat in a chair made of finely polished pink ivory with luxurious crimson velvet cushions. The papers on the desk were neatly stacked to the left while a single book titled "Flying Colors" took its residence on the right. Exactly five inches in front of the book was an antique vase that dated back 586 years. The vase was plain but along its rim was a lovely scene of couples walking through a thriving park. Pure white orchids had nestled in the relic, their clean blooms head high. Lined at the front of the desk's polished surface were a row of five pens, all black but each engraved with a different type of gem, perfectly parallel with the one next to it. Nothing moved. Not even her.

However, as the stalking light reached the Everfree forest, clouds began to move in, black and grey claws grasping for the glowing orb. The village of Ponyville was in as sorry a state as ever. A year had passed since the war that had caused the worst of the damages but still they lingered like an unattended wound.
