Card art for the Innistrad set of Magic: The Gathering. The trickiest issue with this piece was that the magic was to be dark purple. Usually magic is portrayed as bright and glowing which makes it show up well but dark magic requires a light background to show up so it took some balancing before the value scheme worked. The character designs were wide open so it was fun creating them.
For Magic: The Gathering's Innistrad set. Brief called for a spectral creature that is calling the spirits of dead warriors on a battlefield. I really have mixed feeling about this one. Time pressure caught me and some elements just didn't get handled the way I wanted. But I learned some valuable things about luminescence and workflow.
One of several cards that I had the pleasure of illustrating for the 2012 Magic the Gathering Core Set.
You can go here to learn all about it and see some of the amazing art in the image gallery: [link] It was a great change of pace to be able to do a still life, inanimate object but still try to give it life and warmth. Hopefully I delivered on it.
