Hi guys! This is a new set of 12 artworks I did for the new Star Wars Essential Reader's Companion. Although the dateline for this book was a lot tighter it nevertheless was an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

As with the last book I will be posting them in the order of sequence as it appears in the Reader's Companion. Enjoy!

A scene from the ever popular Thrawn Trilogy. I believe this is from the 1st book, Heir To The Empire. Chewie and Ralrra take Leia to safety after an attempted assassination on her life by Noghri commandos sent by Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Trying to depict wookiees climbing and hanging from giant tree branches was really tricky but I think I managed to pull it off. Turned out better than expected.

This was another piece that was done purely for the fans. It's from Force Heretic of the New Jedi Order series and it shows the Jedi Expedition led by Grand Master Luke Skywalker exchanging cordial gestures with former enemy and renown Imperial ace pilot, Baron Soontir Fel. He's one of my favorite EU characters mostly because he's an upstanding Imp and the Empire's equivalent of Alliance ace, Wedge Antilles, whom I love.

Fel here is part of the Chiss Expansionary Defense Force but was also formerly a commanding officer in Thrawn's Empire of the Hand before its dissolution....or absorption by the Chiss Ascendancy. The Jedis are on the Chiss homeworld of Csilla and they are on an expedition in search of the mysterious sentient planet, Zonama Sekot, which they believe is the key to defeating the Yuuzhan Vong.

Another painting featuring the same characters from my previous painting [link] , changed the designs around a bit, but tried to keep them looking pretty similar . This one was just some personal work I wanted to mess around with though.

Ending up going through a shitload of different character positions, and still not as satisfied as I would like to be with their final setup, but I really need to start working on finishing my video tutorial, so time to move on.

Also sorry if you guys have to do any horizontal scrolling, the image is pretty wide ;x.

cc welcomed as always

Namman Cha wanted to be a dancer. But the other girls laughed at his face stripes, and perpetually reddened eyes. It was a downward spiral. He turned to drugs, which made his eyes redder, which made him even more of a target to those cruel, cruel little girls.

Now he has a fun lightsaber! It makes him smile every time he activates it. Because It reminds him of when he was a little boy, and the sound of bratty, haughty, vain and mean little girls begging for their lives...

Once, he was picked on. Nowadays, he's just kind of a dick.

Visene offered to sponsor him if he appeared in their new commercials for "Clear Eyes, even banishing the red of pure hatred." Namman made a deal with Ray-Bans instead.

Rachi Sitra attempting the Inverse Dun Moch on Namann Cha.

The "Inverse Dun Moch" may sound like a lost entry in the Barbarian Kama Sutra, (highly reccommended reading, BTW,) but it's actually a fancy term for "be nice to a dick." Wait, that still sounds like… let me expound.

Remember when Vader befuddled Luke mid lightsaber frenzy by talking crap about his inept blundering, and "not being worthy to wear the Jedi panties" and all that? That's the Dun Moch. Talking trash. It's just like what we all do when we're playing video games with each other. Distraction and undermining of the verbose varietyc.

The Inverse Dun Moch is to heap sticky praise and warm cuddlefuzzy phrases on your opponent instead. Like Luke did when he convinced Vader that there was still good in him. Get them to trust you, then WHAM! Yank their mask off and watch them choke on the bitter air of your sneaky psychological victory!

Rachi Sitra, once again defying the stereotype that Twi'leks are the strippers of the galaxy with her Jedi'in, archeolog'in, and unfolding the mysteries of the force with a holocron'in.

For the uninitiated: A holocron is a vessel of great, abundant, and powerful secret knowledge. Like an iPad, or a book written by someone with two middle names. And just like iPads, they can be used for good or evil, but let's be realistic here - mostly evil.

This particular holocron contains a saucy sort of Jedi Kama Sutra. Once you throw force powers into a bedroom mix, things get awesome weird.

Special thanks to Rachi for candidly demonstrating some of the maneuvers involving Twi'lek "lekku" (head tails.) I will forever scheme for an excuse to do it all again.

Whoever designed the Exogen class needs to seriously.. $#@^@^$@&%$^%$&#*!!@!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love dark troopers but I HATE THE EXOGEN class. GOD. I really tried my best to pick a flattering angle and make it look good.

Note to designer. Never copy and paste parts. It may work for 2d.. but these tricks never stand up to scrutiny in 3 dimensions..!! Come on!!

PS:
Done for Sony Online Entertainment's Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game.

Shout out to Roger Chamberlain, Art Director for the project.

Work is copyright to Lucasarts Entertainment (explains why you don't see signatures anywhere on the work as well...). You can find the higher res wallpaper versions here: [link]

Now that Galaxies is officially defunct, I thought it safe to post some of my favourite illustrations here for posterity sake..!

Working on this franchise for close to 2 years really helped me grow as a creative and allowed me to explore many aspects of the craft-- its not often you get to play the role of illustrator, story-teller and designer within a single commission. It was truly rewarding in hindsight and more often that not, a very humbling experience when you witness the sheer quality and passion of other fellow creatives working on the same project, really inspires you to stretch yourself beyond the usual bounds!

I was asked to edit out the body parts in the background.. ;) (Note the unofficial indirect-fire wrist rockets being deployed)

I always try to nab the trooper cards before anyone else. :) I recall being very taken by the bleached and cross-processed art direction of Black Hawk Down and had to do a few cards in a similar feel. What better than with one involving rappelling special forces stormies..

at first, I wanted it to become a bigger and complex one, but I'm not in the mood spending more time on it. Enjoy anyway ^_^

Well, it was announced today, so I think it is safe to post here. ;-) A quick Promo painting I did last week for an upcoming book by John Jackson Miller for Del Ray.
More here:
[link]

This is about a 4 hour painting (spread out over a few days or so).
EDIT: I should also mention that after an initial b/w rough-- I did an INTENSE study of Ewan McGregor on as many films as possible... My initial sketch had fallen flat on capturing either Ewan or Alec's Obi Wan likeness, so I obsessed with a quest to understand the anatomy of Ewan McGregor's face and expressions.

Most of the time, we artists will seek out references of people likenesses in the same pose we are about to draw.. But I could NOT --for the life of me-- FIND a pose of McGregor in any film that matched what I needed to show here. So what you have, is a very careful freehand rendition "imagined" in that pose by cross referencing MANY photos of Ewan's face, and how light and shadow reflect off of it in various environments. So yeah-- While the initial painting was about 4 hours, there was a lot longer in side sketching and studying of this man's face... I don't think I've ever went that deep before in a portrait.
