On Humor and Grittyness in Movies/Video GamesI'm getting really sick of the idea that the only good action movies or video games are ones where everything is all serious and dark. It's the whole "gritty" concept blown to extremes. But through all the countless games I've played and movies I've watched, I think that we could back off a bit from being too damn serious and have some fun once in a while. On Humor and Grittyness in Movies/Video Games in Personal More Like This
Take the latest Die Hard movie as a prime example. From the start it's a dark, gritty, almost monochromatic movie with a 20 minute car chase sequence at the beginning so over-the-top that it's almost cartoony. But the way it's shot is atrocious and there's no character development what-so-ever that 40 minutes into the film I was looking at the clock wondering not only "when will this be over," but also "what the f*** did I just watch?"
Contrast that to something like Independence Day. People like to rag on Independence Day because it's so "goofy" and "absurd." But what helps the film is that we're given time to enjoy the characters s
Too SoonIn one of my recent comics I casually mentioned the shooting at The Dark Knight Rises premiere in Colorado. The comic wasn't about the shooting, nor was it making light of the shooting. However, some people weren't able to see past that and felt it was offensive and in poor taste.Too Soon in Personal More Like This
I am really sorry that my comic offended anyone. It was never meant to trivialize the deaths of the victims of that event, nor was it trying to make fun of them. I was never suggesting or inferring that you should ignore the tragic event, nor trying to be dismissive of the event. I wasn't saying you shouldn't feel empathy, or even sadness over the event. And I especially wasn't trying to paint myself as being uncaring towards the victims.
If you'd like to help the victims through this terrible event, please check out this http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/20/aurora-theater-colorado-shooting_n_1690093.html?utm_hp_ref=impact here. You can help by donating to The Colorado American Red Cross chapters, donate
Fan and Creator RelationshipsWe see it all the time these days. An artist posts work-in-progress of whatever it is they're working on and they get instant feedback from their fans. Be it on tumblr, DA, through a livestream session or on their websites, this trend of letting fans critique their work before it's finished is becoming so common place that it's almost expected of us now.Fan and Creator Relationships in Personal More Like This
Personally I'm a little torn up on the idea. On the one hand all artists need feedback and critique to improve, and if something isn't right with their work it's much easier to notice and fix while it's in a preliminary stage. On the other hand... a creator logistically can't show the behind the scenes work of everything they do. And if an artist isn't being 100% transparent with their art, it's often wrongly assumed that they're trying to "hide" something.
It's been happening more and more lately, fans of an artist being extremely vocal about how they feel the art should be drawn. And while feedback is important, I also
PRIEST LIGHTNIN!Brentalfloss contacted me early this week wanting to collaborate on a video about the new Pope. Our goal was to finish most of the art by the end of the week and just add in the Pope's face later when we finally found out who he was so that we could time the video with his election. As anyone who's probably seen CGP Grey's video about "how to elect a pope" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kF8I_r9XT7A , knows that it can sometimes take a very long time. So I was planning to work on this project rather leisurely in-between other projects like brentalfloss the comic.PRIEST LIGHTNIN! in Personal More Like This
Then I woke up Wednesday afternoon to a txt from brent indicating that they had just elected Pope Francis.

The trailer to "Equestria Girls" (the humanized MLP spinoff film) finally was released today. Aaaannnd everyone's freaking out. Again.
You know, it actually looks pretty decent. Bronies... please understand: I know you're a major unexpected demographic for the show. I know you enjoy seeing shout-out's become canon within the show, and appreciate how the creators do little things here and there for you. But... the show isn't made for you. This is not Cartoon Network and the target demographic isn't 25 year olds in college. You're a nice addition to the target demographic of little girls, but you are not the driving force behind MLP.
I don't want this to sound mean, but it needs to be said. This is where it becomes very important to understand the fine line between being a fan of the show and thinking that because you've invested so much energy into the show that you're entitled to things.

Miyazaki vs OtakuIn case you haven’t heard this, renowned Japanese animation icon Hayao Miyazaki was quoted as saying that the reason the anime industry is suffering is because it’s overrun with “otaku.”Miyazaki vs Otaku in Personal More Like This
You can read the full article here: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2014-01-30/miyazaki/the-problem-with-the-anime-industry-is-it-full-of-otaku
Naturally, such a high profile artist such as Miyazaki coming down hard on Otaku has offended a lot of people and a bit of backlash has sprung up because of it. I’d like to try and reassure some of you that it’s not as bad as it might sound, and here’s why (please keep in mind this is from an American perspective).
“Otaku” in Japan is (or was) an offensive word, usually embodying the worse traits of obsessive basement dwelling collection completing socially inept geeks. It gained widespread negative connotations after the 1989 “Otaku Murders” carried out by Tsutomu Miyazaki (which are to
Being Critical =/= HateLooks like I need to remind people about this again, as yesterday I got several comments in a row from people who assumed that me being critical about something automatically translated into me outright hating it. I don't know how to stress this enough but that's not the case... You can be critical of stuff you like and not hate it. I don't know why our culture tries so hard to force everything into such black and white terms but come on guys, really... being critical and smart about what you love doesn't mean you hate it.Being Critical =/= Hate in Personal More Like This
Take the Dragon's Crown comic, for example, in which I was critical of the Sorceress's design. From that someone hypothesized that I must HATE the game, and that's farthest from the truth. I know full well that Vanillaware is an amazing studio and they do fantastic work. One of my favorite games of theirs is Muramasa the Demon Blade. Dragon's Crown has scored really highly and it's most definitely worth your money to buy/download it if you can. BUT... I can still be
Binary HatredRemember when I was posting some journals about artist taboos and I had a couple more to talk about? Here's one of them, though it doesn't just relate to artists it's just kinda an all around taboo I wish would end.Binary Hatred in Personal More Like This
Perceived Rivalry Hatred
Basically it works like this: You say you dislike something and immediately get attacked by people who either defend the thing you said you disliked, or accuse you of being a supporter of it's supposed rival (whether this has any basis in reality or not). It also works on things you like, things you're indifferent to, or anything really. EVERYTHING has a supposed default rival. Movies, TV, Video Games, Ideologies, Words, Phrases, etc. Everything.
Say you're an atheist? Automatically means you hate all Christians.
Say you like the X-Box 360? Automatically means you hate Sony.
Say you like the PS3? Automatically means you hate Microsoft.
You liked a Marvel movie? Guys you hate the DC stuff.
You like Chocolate Ice Creme? Fuck you and your vanilla bias!
One Myth I Wish I Could Dispel"Feminism means you can't like sexy things"One Myth I Wish I Could Dispel in Personal More Like This
After doing a series of comics standing up for women's rights, there's a lot of really negative rumors going on around me right now. Most of which point to the hypocrisy that I use to draw fetish artwork and that recently I made pin-ups that were "sexy" in nature. Because, of course, if you're an artist who stands up for women's rights from that moment on you're not allowed to EVER draw women in a way that might be construed as potentially "sexy," lest you be labeled a hypocrite.
As I've mentioned before in previous journals, I really can't stand this mentality the internet has of polarizing extremes. You've always gotta be in one extreme or you're in the other. There's never the possibility that you could be in the middle like, you know, a normal person would be.
I understand why that is: it's easier to point out fallacies and bitch and whine about people when they fit into nice neat black and white spec
Controversial OpinionsYou know, sometimes having opinions can make you feel like no one else shares your views, especially if your views aren't being widely vocalized around you. Case in point: It's just been announced that J.J.Abrams will be directing Star Wars 7, and the internet is raging with butthurt about how shitty Abrams is, making over abundant lens flare jokes, and bemoaning the reboot of Star Trek in the process.Controversial Opinions in Personal More Like This
Thing is... I like J.J.Abrams. I liked LOST (despite it's shitty/rushed ending). I liked Super 8. I liked Cloverfield. I even enjoyed the recent Star Trek reboot and am looking forward to the sequel. I never had a problem with lens flares or noticed them being over used. And I think overall Abrams has made a fairly consistent batch of quality movies, which is a amazing considering how many directors flip flop between great and shitty.
But I can't often come right out and say that sort of thing because when I do I get attacked for having an opinion that runs counter to the vast majority o

When is information true and useful and when is it just “propaganda?” Why in fact is an image or phrase or animated art sequence “propaganda” rather than it simply being a “lie?” What about acceptable lies that define our society as much as they degrade it - - for example commercials that obviously hype a product with untruths or political advertisements full of unachievable platitudes.

The year is 2030. America has fallen and split into two independent states. Down south it's the AAU - the AfroAmerican Union, a shambled anclave run by blacks. It's in a constant state of war with Mexico, that had bit off the few of the former US states in the south, but no power can make a definite claim to the disputed land. All the northern states + Canada had transformed into United American Federation - run exclusively by women. Biogenetics finally allowed for human parthenogenesis, and all the male population was promptly displaced and deported, to be replaced for vat-grown fabricated women in all ranks and walks of life. The two states teeter on the edge of conflict, but a dark, sinister plot brews in UAF to use the resources of the AAU to support them in the expansion over the ocean.
So it's up to our team of heroes from Russia, Europe and China (yes, we'd want to be inclusive, no?) to infiltrate the enemy territory as a
Ex iphonisThe other day I was reading an article, where some celebrity-type of person – and for the love of guns, can't remember who it was – started profusely gushing how culture is being buried under an avalanche of technology-inspired neurosis', how personal communication, art, deep thought and creativity is drowned in the electric hiss of our Facebook statuses. The tone of the article was preacher-like and nauseous. And even though I generally tended to follow the same thought process, something about it was off-putting, and I started to think about it in more focus.
And realized how this line of thinking is wrong.
The real problem is the human trait to think of the past in a far more idealized manner than we think about the present. It has to do with the way our brain functions, I guess – I'm no neuroscientist, but the information which I possess, points me to the fact that our mind cannot hold to the whole detailed picture of the past, but is

How many times has someone silenced you with a simple offhanded reiteration of 'That wasn't very tolerant'?
Strange how tolerance sometimes becomes the byword of intolerance: namely censoring opposing positions without any due consideration.
Now not everyone uses 'tolerance' in this way. We all grew up learning tolerance was a good thing and that people should be accepted just the way they are. Its a good thing, definitionally, that you seek to act in a moral and friendly fashion and encourage that behavior in others by calling their attention to speaking out in anger or being unjust to others.
'Everyone is entitled to their opinions' is taken at face value as undeniable fact, yes? Of course. We're all well bred people who wouldn't dream of imposing ourselves on others.
Or would we?
This 'tolerance' and 'equality of opinion' stops dead in the mind of many for people w
Megaupload is Just The Beginning? Here's a little bit of a worrisome discovery.Megaupload is Just The Beginning? in Personal More Like This
Megaupload, a file sharing website, is completely gone. If you go to that domain its entirely blank.
But here's the thing...the FBI destroyed it.
The main offices of this site were located in New Zealand, but there were other smaller offices in the US. The Federal Government literally hunted down the representatives of this webpage and arrested them in two countries, then erased it from existence!
But not before they seized all the records of anyone who ever used the site as evidence.
If you or anyone else has used Megaupload illegally, this will probably be very disturbing.
Why? Because their site was distributing copy-write infringing uploads.
So those who claim SOPA and PIPA will do nothing, take a good look into the black hole of Megaupload. The FBI can track you down and throw you in prison and then track all your constituents ALREADY.
But the reach of this is even wider.

Political Journal: Anti-Bullying BulliesWARNING: Political opinions and positions lie herein! I'm just hoping to stimulate conversations if I can though.Political Journal: Anti-Bullying Bullies in Personal More Like This
I do not honestly begin this with the intention of telling people what to think or state emphatically that my positions are unassailable. All I want to do is make mention of my understanding and support that with evidence.
If I veer from the rails correct me and I'll attempt to readjust.
If you dispute any points too, PLEASE state them below!
I want to talk about it.
Just to make it clear though, some of these positions will be objective.
Dan Savage (the man who shares the unfortunate distinction of being the chief editor of a local Seattle publication called The Stranger) recently gave a speech at a high school as part of his anti-gay-bullying series It Gets Better. In addition to encouraging homosexuals on their lifestyles he made a point of calling out what he saw as Christian hypocrisy...or to put it in his own words 'Bullshit'.
To paraphrase, he brought up the point th

“My paintings could probably be categorized into two groups,
especially if you are one of those people who like labeling things into neat packages.
I have a strong emotional side, sensitive and poetic, with all the adorning side-effects,
which enables me to lift paintings up to what has been referred to as visual poetry or poetic symbolism.
The other me is cool and collected, witty and sharp,
with a passion for philosophy, psychology and games…
That is rather the surrealistic and wacky me, and so are some of my paintings.”

A word about the state of 2DAfter hearing about Disney gutting their 2D theatrical animation department, I think I've finally realised something. 2D isn't dying everywhere it's only dying in the North America's Theatrical movies. 2D is pretty much everywhere else in the world. Japan is still putting out several 2D TV shows and theatrical films, 2D is still big in TV animation (Even more bigger than CGI, since 2D is easier to achieve on a TV budget), and it's huge on the internet, serval shorts while made in adobe flash still use the frame by frame techniques of classic 2D animation. And it is possible for independent studios to make 2D animated films, recently the web series Dick Figures started a Kickstarter and managed to get enough money to produce a movie based on the series, in fact I think they're getting close to finishing it now. So in conclusion 2D is only dying when it comes to theatrical animation in North America, it's alive and well everywhere else and if we want to bring it back to North AmerA word about the state of 2D in Personal More Like This
Get Better At Drawing (Without Drawing Anything)Art is a process.Get Better At Drawing (Without Drawing Anything) in Art Features More Like This
Like that of the scientific method and philosophical alchemy, art can be refined and improved through process. From observation, to experiment, to reflection and conclusion, art is improved by the steps we make towards change, not solidification and stagnation. Much of the advice out there for drawing is simply practice or avoid distractions. This advice is good, but there is more to creation than just throwing yourself mindlessly into a task and avoiding bad habits along the way. Good habits and knowledge will help to excel your learning process faster, and from that, improve faster and more effectively.
Look at it
As an artist, observation is key. The skill we develop is not just seeing, but interpreting what we see, remembering what we have seen and recording it in the form of visual art. This is a skill that, aside from blindness or vision degradation, you will be able to improve during your entire life. The way of seeing from an art
