INFO ABOUT THE ANIMAL:

Name: Kodiak bear (Ursus arctos middendorffi)
Location:islands of the Kodiak Archipelago - Southern coast of Alaska
Size: 3, 2 m long body weight: 700 kg
Diet: mostly plants (berries, plants), but also meat (salmon, elk, deer, goat)
Conservation status:
Interesting facts: Kodiak is the biggest of all brown bears subspecies | Kodiak bears have solitary lives, every animal defends its own territorium | mother gives birth to 2-3 cubs during the time of hybernation. They must beware of the males then, as adult male bears often kill and eat the cubs. Almost half of the cubs die and the main reason of their death are adult males | females are smaller and lighter than males | the population is slowly increasing | not all the Kodiak bears spend the winter by sleeping in den.

Name: Common Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)
Location: warm and temperate tropical oceans worldwide
Size: 2 - 4 metres long weight: 150 – 650 kg
Diet: fish, cephalopod, crustacean
Conservation status: Least Concern
Interesting facts: dolphin is a mammal, not a fish! Baby dolphins always drink mother milk | dolphins have bigger brains, than humans | dolphins usually live in groups | dolphin is one of few animals, who kill not only for food! Dolphins are well-known for killing porpoises, their smaller "cousins". Male dolphins are also known to rape the females. Male dolphins even kill baby dolphins to make their mothers want to mate again. Dolphins are not that cute and nice animals, as many people think. They have no problem to kill a shark and they sometime annoy or sexually harass swimmers in the sea | dolphins use very effective echolocation to search for prey | dolphins are time to time found washed ashore, too often dying – nobody knows, why this happens.

So, here we have the second installment of my birthday shots for dear

Here we have Kya, one of the resident, female bengal tigers at the Southwick zoo in Mendon Massachusetts.
It was once taught and is still widely believed that the tiger is a completely solitary hunter, with the exception of mother's rearing cubs, but that's not entirely true.
While it has been proven that tigers can be hostile and territorial, they can occasionally hunt and even live cooperatively.
It has been theorized the social structure of the lion was fostered by the abundance of game on the serengheti whereas the tiger, confined mostly to Asian forests where game is scarcer and often smaller the territoriality may simply have stemmed from a lack of prey.

A shot of the late, female Asian Elephant, Dondi. The one-time all-star of the Southwick Zoo, New England's largest zoo, in Mendon Massachusetts.

There is a long tradition in zoos and circuses of keeping female Asian elephants, as they are not only the only sort of elephant in the world that doesn't grow tusks, and they are smaller than both the males of their species, and the plains African elephant.
A twelve-foot-tall, eight-ton African bull elephant with nine-foot tusks is a might sight trickier to keep confined than the comparatively more docile, female Asian elephant.
The only place I've ever, in my life seen African elephants is at the Roger Williams Park Zoo, Providence Rhode Island.

Dondi here was the star attraction at the Southwick Zoo, and the star of her own show where she would perform tricks with the help of her trainer for the appreciative crowd.

Sadly though, this year, Dondi unexpectedly passed on.
In captivity, an elephant of any species can live up to seventy years.
Unfortunately, Dondi's ticker gave out after only thirty eight too-short years.

So long, Dondi.

A proto-simian, the lemur represents one of man's ancestors the least removed from our non-primate, mammalian cousins.
Lemurs lack truly opposable thumbs. They are excellent climbers and graspers, but their ability to manipulate objects is limited.

I messed up my telephoto lens a while ago ([link]), so I couldn't use it when shooting this spoonbill. I only had a 50mm. Luckily, this guy is a total ham. He flapped onto a nearby rail to show off. I got close enough to annoy a lesser bird, but he was drinking in the attention. After about fifteen minutes, I got enough pictures, so I left. He looked after me, agitated. Didn't I see that he was still there?

Here's one of those shots. I'm standing absurdly close. Just cropped the edges to make it square.

_{This Siberian husky got her MACH at this trial. I just had to mention this for all those people who preach that huskies cannot compete in obedience sports.}
