Secret Santa wishlist 2012!For the third year now, I'm participating in Tajii-chan's Secret Santa!Secret Santa wishlist 2012! in Personal More Like This
I always get so excited over these *u* I put a lot of effort into last year's entry, I just have so much fun!
I want my gift to be: A colored drawing (either digital or traditional) of my character Aika, or both my characters Aika and Hisoka
In my gift I'd like to see: My characters! If you choose to draw them both, I'd like it to be something cute & Christmas themed!
Since they're in a baking school, I'd LOVE to see Christmas themed deserts <3
Extra Info: References!
I will be willing to give: A colored digital drawing. Please note that I DO draw in the shoujo style, so a shoujo character is preferred please~
Goodluck!Hello everyone!Goodluck! in Personal More Like This
This is just a simple journal wishing everyone going to school the best of luck!
Especially to the ones who are just starting out, such as the ones going to college/university, or just a new school in general~
I know it will seem scary and intimidating, but give it time and hopefully you'll find your comfort zoneá
Whether that be new friends, a new group/team, or even just a regular relaxing spot for you to go to every now and then
I hope you all can find some enjoyment in your school experience
ALSO don't feel pressured or rushed into anything you're not ready for!
If you need a little break from anything, don't hesitate to take it.
If you feel like you're behind everyone else, remember that you're an individual person who works/learns at their own pace
You're allowed to ask for help or have time time to yourself and figure things out.
You're also allowed to feel discouraged and upset about things in school, but try your hardest to not let it consume you.

I've been on deviantART for about 3 and a half years now, and I've learned a lot, made so many new friends...
it's been an amazing road in my artistic life! I've never improved faster than when I joined here!
Just so much endless support and motivation from everyone （ﾉ┤∀`）.。ｏ♡
And yes, I know that in those years, a lot of watchers deactivated or stopped coming here
But I still really appreciate ALL of the support and amazing comments I get on my artwork from everyone~!

First two weeks: COMPLETEYES. I have officially finished my first TWO WEEKS of University!First two weeks: COMPLETE in Personal More Like This
I was originally going to post a journal talking about my first week, but...got too buy (ironic? pft)
ANYWAYS, if I could sum it all up I'd say two things: LOT'S of reading, and no friends
WELCOME TO THE ADULT LIFE;;;;
Yeah I'm very bumed about not having any of my high school friends in my classes, because THEY ALL DO ;n; I feel like I'm back to being in grade 9 where I was a loser with no friends sitting in a giant classroom alone.
And I KNOW I wanted to be more social and make new friends, but it's FUCKING HARD TAT
Especially when surrounded in a class with 100-200 people who all already have their own friends.
Though I feel like it would for sure be easier to make friends in my studio class, since there's only 27 people in it AND we're all in there for our art majors...so we're ALREADY bonded ;u;
There was one girl in that class who has sorta already started talking to me on her own! She's a bit...eccentric and cheer

I joined deviantART in September 2009 after two online friends at the time kept insisting I make an account. So I did...
But I didn't even touch it until January 2010 LOL I didn't even know how to use the site :'D
I remember saving drawings I liked to my computer because I didn't even know how to favorite them omg
2010: I got my first tablet for Christmas in 2009, which prompted me to start digital art and use this site 'u'
THIS being my first submission
Sadly, I've removed QUITE a bit of my old artwork from 2010 and 2011, but I used to post A LOT of things here
2010 was probably my most active year, and the year I improved the most.
As seen here, from a March drawing to a December drawing from the same year~

In just a few days I move into my dorm room for university. Orientation is a 3 day program and I'm just so nerve wracked about it! I'm a pretty shy person so getting around campus alone makes me nervous. I'm excited to be moving up to such an artsy town, but also a bit anxious. What's my roommate going to be like? What about all of the crazy parties that university is known for? The freshman fifteen, the enormous campus that I'm going to have to walk? Just thinking about it all makes me feel suddenly very small.
For those who don't know, I'm going into a journalism major (not an art major) so art has become less and less my life right now. All that I do is work on "OC Games" stuff, but art is my last priority right now. I even write and read before I go online now, just because I've become more detached from deviantART. I remember when there was a time that I had dA open all the time while I browsed. When

That was until a gunman broke into the theater and a mass shooting occurred. In the middle of the movie theater. The mass shooting is one of the biggest mass shootings in the States, with thirteen people killed and seventy one shot; many in critical condition. Watching it on the news for the first time both horrified and saddened me; not only because I am from Colorado but because of the magnitude of what was going on. It was a relief to hear that no one I knew was in Aurora, but my heart went out to and stayed with all of the victims and their families. Watching the whole process was depressing and heartbreaking and I'm still in shock, thinking about th

Summer holidays have now officially hit and what better to do with all this free time than practice with my art? Plus, I'd like to have the opportunity to draw different types of characters..
How do I enter?
To make things easier than my last giveaway, I'm going to request that people favorite this journal instead of just leaving a comment. That way, I can use a random number generator and then use the favorite numbers to decide who the winner of the draw is! So be sure to favorite this journal and hey if you'd like you can also leave a comment
What will I be offering?
Now, here's the catch. If I do draw your name in a draw, I will note you and ask you for your request. You are allowed to request a certain character-- but I decide the format, the pose and everything else. Give me as much info as you can and I'll try to portray your character right: but there's no telling what kind of format things will be drawn in! Chibi, portrait, fullbody, halfbody..? It's

Good Story Advice and the Power of PatienceI recently picked up a copy of Stephen King's the Dark Tower I and while I've yet to read the actual story, the book opens with a thoughtful introduction that contains a number of insightful pieces of commentary. However, the particular part of this opening introduction that really stood out to me was the portion where King mentioned Tolkien's influence on him as a youth and as a writer. He talks about how wildly popular Tolkien's work was with kids growing up around that time, and how reading Tolkien's work eventually inspired his own. In King's own words:Good Story Advice and the Power of Patience in Personal More Like This
"But although I read the books in 1966 and 1967, I held off writing. I responded (with a rather touching wholeheartedness) to the sweep of Tolkien's imagination-to the ambition of his story-but I wanted to write my own kind of story, and had I started then, I would have written his. That...would have been wrong. Thanks to Mr. Tolkien, the twentieth century had all the wizards and elves it needed."
And that's a big reas
On the Subject of Claws and Long NailsCreatures from myth with long, sharp nails, claws, or talons is nothing new. Same goes for characters from popular media and original characters. However, some time ago I read an article featuring an interview with Ralph Fiennes (the actor who played Voldemort in the Harry Potter film series). For the role, he had these fake nails glued on and, interestingly enough, said he had to avoid making a fist or else the nails would break off (I think you can also notice during the films there's a sort of delicacy to how he even holds his wand and generally gestures with his hands because of this)On the Subject of Claws and Long Nails in Personal More Like This
This was interesting to me because:
1) It got me thinking of how all these characters with long nails and sharp claws (unless they were somehow retractable) could manage to make proper fists and do all these action sequences where they're punching each other and doing anything else that involves gratuitous and dramatic hand clenching.
2) It likewise made me wonder how these characters could go around

Anyway, I know some people have said they get tired of seeing Ganon over and over again in the games, but I actually really like Ganon as an antagonist. If anything, he's probably one of my favorite video game villains of all time. It's some bizarre thing for me in that, on one hand, there are a lot of times when I think two-dimensional villains can be lame and boring (not to mention overdone as hell). The whole cliched, "I want power/to rule the world just BECAUSE" with no further explanation needed. Yet at the same time, I'm drawn to characters like Mumm-ra and Skeletor who do pull that exact same cliched bullshit without too much depth or insightful reasoning behind it for some weird reason. I mean, I can totally acknowledge that they're cliche as all hell, but at the same time there's something "fun" and

"other people/normal people: let's have sex and party and drink and do drugs lololol
me: gonna sit at home blogging and watching anime and doctor who and sherlock and snacking"
1) Despite masquerading behind a veil of this 'innocent' self-described "quirkiness" it's actually pretty haughty and pretentious when looked at from another angle.
2) It reeks of blatant and unabashed special snowflakism (almost in the same vein as those other posts with, "i would rather prefer to stay online and being a fanboy/fangirl than doin drugs or havin sex and party liek most kidz my age reblargh if u agree").
Actually, the entire mentality reeks of this really distorted idea that one can't be a partier or drinker/smoker and simultaneously be a frequent internet user or enjoy "nerdy" or "geeky" pursuits as well. Do you honestly think, given this day and age and how widespread and necessary computers have become, that you're the only one "addic
The HobbitI found An Unexpected Journey to be reasonably entertaining. There was action, magic, mystery, rolling landscapes and a good dose of adventure. It's also incredibly lengthy and clocks at nearly three full hours. However, wile I enjoyed a number of the film's aspects, I wouldn't rate it as highly as any of the LOTR films. The Hobbit in Personal More Like This
The film has a bit of darkness and foreshadowing in it, to be sure, but a part of what adds to the near three-hour runtime is the fact chunks of the film are loaded with seemingly pointless "fluff" and shenanigans that don't do anything to add to the foreshadowing in question or build onto anything more substantial or serious. A prime example of this is the first 25-30 minutes of the film (also one of the chunks of the film I found slowest) when Bilbo is first introduced to Gandalf and the Dwarves. The entire portion with the Dwarf visit focused more on irritating Bilbo and slapstick fooling around than actually setting a decent tone or building up the film and comes o
i see horse peopleI'm fairly aware of how popular BBC Sherlock and Doctor Who are, but every time I see people gushing to the point of tears over how "beautiful" or "hot" the actors are I can't help but inwardly guffaw to myself. I realize beauty is often considered an item that's largely held up to and placed "in the eye of the beholder" but good lord. My eyes "behold" horse-faced skeleton people. I've seen posts from girls who said they were "nearly in tears" due to Benedict Cumberbatch's "Adonis-like" beauty on more than once occasion, but the man looks as horse-faced as it gets to me (same with that Adler woman). I've likewise seen people get riled just because someone else didn't share their opinion that the current Matt Smith doctor was "attractive" and saw a few instances where people would respond with, "oh, they must not have any appreciation for chiseled jaws or manly noses."i see horse people in Personal More Like This

Throughout history artists of every discipline have been fascinated, inspired and transfixed at every historical stage of the shifting perceptions of the “Witch” in any given time or society. The seams within every page of every chapter written against or in defense of the witch have been alternatively filled with oppressive sexism, blind eyed religious bigotry, occult doctrine, fevered and forbidden lustful sexuality, misplaced fear, and reams of wide eyed superstition.
Consequently, the colors, and lines within every stroke upon every canvas and visceral depiction, carry all the burdensome weight of the long intricacies of this subject. With respect to this much maligned, religiously and politically repurposed, perpetually misunderstood subject

At a young age I began to notice this difference. I was attracted to neither boys nor girls. In middle school, I liked math, and in college, I did my homework all night long.
Being Chinese is not a choice, it is genetic. There are risks to being Chinese because society cannot accept the union between a human and a textbook. I have Chinese friends who didn't need sex because they could foreplay instruments and get screwed by O Chem instead. Now, they don't have a social life and are shunned by others.
But fear not, life will get better. I grew up as a Chinese and I am proud of it (just look at my tumblr user name Maid-en-China ). There is the LGBTC (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Chinese) community to help you be comfortable with your Chinese orientation.

Regarding SOPA and deviantART (update)Our view at deviantART regarding SOPA is that it's probably a bad idea. There should be better ways to deal with mass infringement on the Internet than this. This bill in our view can be seen as a threat to the open Internet itself and this is very hard to digest or support.Regarding SOPA and deviantART (update) in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
I personally have found information at the EFF and at Public Knowledge to be very helpful in understanding what is at stake.

Negativity in fandom, and the dreaded 'thoughI was talking with a friend about how some fandoms are super fun to be a part of. And some...not so much. I regret to say, as much as I love Korra, it's not a particularly fun fandom for me. Neither was Avatar. This is a subject I've had on my mind for quite some time for a number of reasons, and it's recently coalesced into a semi-soluble form so here we go. (As an aside- this journal does have some recycled ideas from a previous post of mine, but obviously I hadn't really said everything I wanted to on the subject.)DA's Insular Taste Phenomenon in Personal More Like This
It's no mystery that I love this website. I came in at the tail end of the pre-critique wonder years, when the internet discovered and exploited that, yes, we don't always produce the highest quality art here. There's a lot of unpleasantness directed towards DeviantArt. At RISD, I made a point to never mention that I had an account here, because of the looks of disgust I would get haha and people would think about me differently. It was
