"Dark. Get over here. Now."
"Dark, no... you don't have to listen to him..." Mephiles caught him by the arm as soon as Dark reacted automatically, having not realized what he was doing. He blinked and looked at Mephiles, mentally grateful that Mephiles caught him. "He can't tell you what to do..."
"But..." Dark started to protest feebly.
"Oh, c'mon... you're Dark." Mephiles tried reminding him with an encouraging tone. "You used to never let anyone tell you what to do. You could do whatever you wanted. Don't tell me you forgot about that, did you?"
"Key words being 'used to'..." Dark shook his head and closed his eyes for a moment. "... I'm not even sure what I am now... much less who..."
"You're Dark. That's all you need to know, right? You are you. No one will tell you otherwise..."
"Dark, I am losing my patience..." Iblis said edgily, folding his arms, and baring his teeth. "Who are you going to listen to? Him, or me?"
Dark looked at them bo

Nothing could seem to halt Mephiles shrieks of terror. He shook his head and screamed out, howling in anguish and desolate fear. Shadow grabbed him by the shoulders and shook him roughly to snap him out of it.
Mephiles! Now is not the time!
You let him win! You let him win! He screamed, not at all fazed by the shaking. Were doomed! Were gonna die! Its over! He won!
Deciding that Mephiles was too far distraught to allow him to try to partly fend for himself, Shadow pulled him onto his back and hurried out of the museum just as Dark send a Dark Spike their way, Mephiles screeching as it grazed his crystal quill tips. He was now clawing at Shadow frantically, obvious out of his head with fright.
MEPHILES! Calm down! Shadow yelled as the crystal claws dug into his quills.
This wasnt supposed to happen! He lied to me! He lied to me! And I fell for it! This is all my fault! WHAT

It was night. Mephiles was sleeping soundly on the couch. It had been at least a month since his most recent nightmare. Shadow and Rouge were unaware of it for a few reasons: 1) He hadnt told them. 2) He hadnt really woken up in pure fright. And 3) He figured passed it off as an irrational and totally silly thing, the kind that he would mentally kick himself for overreacting about it.
Curled up on his side, pillow hugged close to his chest, the shady hedgehog neither moved nor twitched; his mind safe and sound from terrifying thoughts.
Darkness was spread throughout the room, which was expected of the middle of the night. The only lights given were the glow of the streetlamps outside, and the time given on the cable box.
The shades ear twitched, and he scrunched his eyelids before opening them sleepily, lifting his head up and staring around in confusion.
He was alone; the room was glowing dimly with a mix of orange and hint of green light (from the cable box.). It wa

Mephiles took a deep breath and clenched his hands in front of him, muttering under his breath as he did.
What are you doing? Shadow immediately perked an ear, trying to catch what he said.
Just trying to motivate myself to tell you the truth, this is actually the first fight Ive been in without Dark first time going against him on my own anyway
Youre not going at it alone Shadow shook his head as he readied for the fight as well. Im fighting with you
First time for that too Mephiles blinked. This is like a turning point, right? For me? I mean Im going to try to beat down my dark side with the help of my best friend No clue if Im going to get out of it okay but doing this because I feel like I have to, and theres a lot weighted on this
Well lives for one thing many in

Mephiles' eyes shifted to the side slowly, taking in the world around himself at a sluggish pace. He was starting to recover from his panic attack, and was starting to become aware once again of the situation that they were in.
Lifting his eyes to Dark, a hint of a frown started to work it's way into his features, and his ears swiveled back even more.
"... I knew he shouldn't have come..." He muttered almost inaudibly. "... His brain's still hurt..." He lowered his head, closing his eyes. "... I'm sorry... I let him get the Emeralds... It's going to be my fault if he gets hurt now..."
"You don't understand, Rouge..." Mephiles interrupted the bat. "I-I know that something bad is going to happen. S-something really bad is. D-dark..." He started to dissolve into a sort of frantic babble, working his fingers into his quills, then gripping behind his head slowly as he tried to explain why he was so paranoid this time. "... I... I s-saw... there was... H-he's..." He inhaled and

Water was all around him. He was drifting to the bottom letting out his last breath slowly and watching the bubbles drift upwards with indifference
He stayed quite still as he fell, Darks voice echoing and screaming at him in his mind.
He didnt care it was all going to be over anyway
Shadow tightened his hand even more, resting the knuckles of his fist on the concrete as he shuddered.
Mephiles had only wanted to be his friend over the past nine months.
He tried but Shadow had initially rejected him until a few months ago
Despite the fact Shadow was very resentful towards him for half a year
He still tried
He tried to find things they had in common
He tried to win his approval
He fought against an inner demon with the thought of Shadows (and everyone elses ) safety in mind
He tried to tell Shadow, to warn him about Dark of what could happen

Thanks to Mephiles ability to heal at an accelerated rate, it was was obvious that his concussion was now nothing more than a sore spot on the side of his head, which was illustrated by a short and somewhat loud declaration of pain when he pulled his fingers back after touching the bruise.
Turning his attention back to the sight he saw before him, Dark was now sorting the remaining pieces in piles of similar sizes, colors, and functions as he ran off a list of other ideas in rapid succession, hardly pausing for a breath.
"A car? A bike? A boat? A plane? A frame? Windmill? Tower? Tall tower? With floors and windows? Wheel... pulley with tires... is there any yarn?"
"What?" Mephiles was still stuck on "windmill" while trying to decode what Dark had been saying.
"Yarn. Or string... large rubber band even. See the wheels?" Dark grabbed a couple handfuls of them and held them up, keeping a constant pattern to the speed of his speech. "Take the tires off and you have the rim

Mephiles was in such shock. His world seemed to come to a complete stop as there was a dead silence in the room.
Easing his hands to his head, he twisted his fingers in his quills, pulling a few loose
He had been the only one to get out before the accident.
He left his family behind and now he could see what had happened to them.
Mephiles..? Rouge said, stopping at only his name, at a loss of anything to say.
They didnt get out The crystal hedgehog said softly, shaking his head as if hoping to erase it all and start all over. Th-they d-didnt f-follow me and h-he k-killed them
Mephiles Im so sorry Shadow said, clenching his fists together as he shook his head.
Mephiles clenched his teeth together as more of the memories came to mind. Panting, he could just grasp more of what had happened that day. Holding back a sob, he clenched a hand into a fis

It was the second night now, and they were about to call it a day at Shadow's request, but at Mephiles' request, or rather persistence, and the both agreed to continue for at least another hour. Mephiles began to search with, if possible, more enthusiasm, as he scoured every inch of every street, alley and corner he could find.
Mephiles' ears perked up again as he froze right where he was. His eyes widened slightly as he gasped ever so quietly. He thought he could hear something that was very welcoming to his sense.
"Dark? Are you there?"
A crash of trashcans as he heard a familiar voice curse under it's breath. Mephiles looked over his shoulder and saw that Shadow was on the other side of the street right now. If Dark was there, maybe it would be better to talk to him if Shadow was out of sight...
Mephiles slipped into the alley and found Dark holding the top of his head, gritting his teeth in pain, having knocked it quite hard into a very full trashcan.
Right now, Mephiles didn't car
