A single water drop slid down the leaf, flattening out and curling into a drop again. As it neared the bottom of the leaf, it sped up and clung to the edge. For several heartbeats, it dangled there, swinging from side to side. Finally, it plunged toward the ground, and splashed into white fur.
Icecloud sat up, looking down at her nest. Moss was sticking up in some places and flattened out in others, like she'd been tossing and turning all night. Her dreams had they been happy? Or tragic? She couldn't remember. Judging by her nest, the young white she-cat guessed it had been a nightmare again, though it wasn't too far from the waking world. She was living a nightmare.
Rain pattered softly on the ground outside, lulling the warriors to sleep. Despite the chilly air outside, it was warm in here. Dark green grass was pressed to the ground by soft-padded paws as they walked toward the tiny hollow. A white half moon shone bright in the sky, showing it was time for the medicine cats to meet. A twig snapped in the undergrowth. Brambleclaw slowly lifted his paw, and glanced at the ground below him. Under the hazel thicket he was standing in was a pile of leaves from last leaf-fall, crumpled and dead. More twigs spread across the forest floor as well. Carefully, Brambleclaw stepped around the twigs, emerging into a small clearing.
"You don't have to be so careful, you know," came Leafpool's voice from behind him. "There's no one out here but us."
"I know, but I still don't know whether Starclan will accept me! I am Tigerstar's son, after all."
