Maddy's Tips: Building a Strong PortfolioAfter receiving a few emails recently asking for portfolio feedback and general advice, I decided to write up a small list of tips that can help a student or graduate create a portfolio that game studios will want to look at.Maddy's Tips: Building a Strong Portfolio10 months ago in Personal More Like This
Degree ≠ Job. A lot of studios don't look in a resume for where you went to school. The first thing they're interested in the quality of work in your portfolio. If you have the skills, then you probably have the job!
Do more than homework. Lot's of college students get turned down by studios because they give them a portfolio that only has school work in it. Studios look for people that create more outside of class. It can range anywhere from fan art to designing your own characters.
Get on forums. Stay active on the game art forums like Polycount or others like CGHub and GameArtisans. Post your work and speak with other aspiring game artists and professionals all over those sites. Lots of studios
If you don't accept criticism, you won't improveThis statement is, to be blunt, incredibly stupid. I see it repeated around DevianART and, as bad as it is hearing it from the general public, I have to laugh uproarously when I see it coming from an artist. I usually try to be more diplomatic, but sometimes my inner Snape just can't be contained. If you don't accept criticism, you won't improve3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Here is the reality of the situation. A person who is building a set of skills can improve without feedback of any kind. Through trial and error, a human being can identify their own mistakes and, with honest work, rectify those mistakes. To say that this is not possible is so counter to reality as to be absurd. I could give thousands of examples but I'll just say this: if it were not for an individual's ability to invent skills from within themselves we would have absolutely no skills to pass on to other people.
Is this a good reason to reject any kind of negative criticism or criticism in general? Does this mean that criticism is useless? Absolutely not. This
open letter to scott harrisscott, i've been reading your latest deviant journal, and i had some thoughts on the things you said both in the journal itself and the comments. the truth is subjective - that is one of the foundations of postmodern discourse. just because you don't know about it, doesn't mean that it isn't true. that, however, isn't the point here. what i'd like to discuss is your attitude in dealing with others.open letter to scott harris3 years ago in Personal More Like This
state your opinions as if they were fact
sneer and look down on others
refuse to look at yourself critically
are unable to structure a logical argument
are unable to analyse any criticism levelled at you objectively
others don't accept your critique because:
you don't offer constructive criticism (see points above)
you haven't proven your own ability (more on that below)
and lastly, due to the above-mentioned points, they don't respect you
of all the mutual aquaintances i've met in online forums,

I'm working on my messages i promise! They piled up while i was home. >.<
My story started almost 4 years ago, I created an account called charmedwolfgirl, this was my first and 'only' account since starting, which i'm quite proud of. In the beginning i was called charmedwolfgirl, because i couldn't think of a better name back then. But the Charmed part seemed to stick when i could change my name. I joined dA on the 20th of August, more than halfway into my first year at the University. I only joined dA after seeing an amazing artist's fanart and then followed it to this wonderful site after a while. I created my account and sort of forgot it for around a year or so before i finally started using it again.
This was one of my first uploads onto the site, a simple picture i took with my ca

Reduced to AshesA Phoenix to Arise
If something burns your soul with purpose and desire, it’s your duty to be reduced to ashes by it.
Today, Lady Gaga’s throne as a reigning pop diva is a 24 carat gold wheelchair, emergency hip surgery forcing the cancellation of her latest tour – a betrayal more devastating for her than for the typical performer, given her relationship with her fans. Her body has finally broken in sacrifice to the needs of her monsters for constant contact and reassurance. The question now is whether this brutal brush with her own mortality will result in the pop goddess pulling back from the edge – or only drive her to new heigh
Impossible Quiz Book: Chapter 3Sirs and Misses!Impossible Quiz Book: Chapter 33 years ago in Personal More Like This
The Impossible Quiz Book: Chapter 3 is completed, and will be released very soon... once I have a release date for it i'll post it on here. I've stripped it down a bit after Chapter 2, so expect the following:
- You'll be jumping from different eras in time! From the Stone-age, to World War II
- Catastrophes have been (mostly) scrapped. Seemed like too much effort for something that only a small handful of people will ever bother attempting.
- Originally, you were going to get a Lifebuoy and a Skip as your powerups in Chapter 3, but after realising that the Lifebuoy wasn't exactly great, i've decided a Fusestopper and a Skip will be more fun.
- It's probably not as good as Chapter 2, because lets face it... that was AWESOME haha!
- This is the last Impossible Quiz ever, and when you complete it you'll know you've finished it for good
Anyways, I'll keep you posted.
