Why are we slower?About a month ago I finally got to meet an art hero of mine, Klaus Janson, a well known pro who's been in the industry for over 30 years. A mutual friend introduced us, and we hit it off right away. The group of us went through the Village hitting pub after pub, and soon I was drunk enough to ask Klaus something that had been bugging me.Why are we slower?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I asked him if modern comic artists are, on average, slower than we used to be. He said yes, and I agreed.
From the Golden Age until the 80s, pencillers were generally expected to turn in at least two pages a day, while an inker was expected to turn in around 3-4. There were a handful of exceptions, I'm sure, but most of the artists could pump out pages like human printing presses. In the current comic industry, it's completely reversed: while a handful of artists can still hit this speed, the vast majority can't. Pencillers today struggle to produce a page-per-day, while inkers (those who still ink with ink) are hitting around 2.
So what happened? I'v
Stop the perfectionismOn my Tumblr site someone asked me for some general advice for an aspiring comic creator. This is what was on my mind. Thought I'd share it here on Deviantart as well.Stop the perfectionism3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Right now all I can think of is something I've been thinking about lately. And that is the depression some of us artists get about our art. Like our expectations aren't just "My drawings need to be good!", they are "My art needs to be PERFECT."
So I would suggest always try to improve, gain confidence, but expect good/average output. Don't expect perfect art, ever. By doing this only causes you to be frustrated, which in turn causes mistakes, which pisses you off more, then you're stuck in a lame spiraling circle downward to the pathetic whiny artist. Which in turn kills your deadline. Giving yourself freedom from perfection makes drawing much easier and better art is produced and on time.
I'm currently working on this piece where it started out difficult, I had high expectations for it, I was in a bad mood, nothing was
May 2012 FeaturesIt's been a while since I did features here. I've been meaning to get to them, but lots of big projects have been stacking up on me so I've been pretty busy. If you're wondering where I've been, I was traveling and working on a video project that I just finished this past March. I've also been trying to put up my own website, http://www.ajpastor.com . It's been going up slowly, but I'm updating it little by little. I'm still trying to keep up with my deviantART account and get things up to date. This is just to let you know that I haven't forgotten about deviantART and I'm still active. Hopefully I'll be able to do a better job of updating during this summer.May 2012 Features3 years ago in Personal More Like This

Here's a sample of responses I've heard from some editors over the years when I've raised practical business concerns regarding comic book publishing:
"No, we don't know exactly what books you'll be doing, but we're (insert name of big publisher) Comics, so sign exclusive with us and not (insert name of competing publisher who has titles ready for you)!"
"This is a (insert name of big writer) book! I know he's late, but just think of how many people would love to be in your shoes!"
"The page rate isn't good, but at least you'll be getting to work with (name of big superhero whom you're supposed to be a fan of)!"
"We won't fly you out or put you into a hotel, but you should come so you can sign at the booth for us! Who doesn't love signing autographs?"
What do these statements have in common? They're emotional arguments made to sidestep yo
I´m so happy .... and featuretime I have my new laptop After my old laptop was broken 2 weeks ago, I have now (since Friday evening) my new one. It´s so wonderful fast and I had a lot of fun with it this weekend. I made my first textures and I hope you like them and they are helpful. Fortunately I was able to rescue my data sets with my last vacation photos, all my stocks and my last unfinished photomanipulation, on which I worked the last week, before my PC was out of order.I´m so happy .... and featuretime3 years ago in Personal More Like This

Troll Slang and Swear WordsReading through the forums of Trollcall.net I found these troll slang and swear words. If you are easily shocked or offended I suggest you do not read further.Troll Slang and Swear Words5 years ago in Personal More Like This
One of the most versatile words in the Zandali language. Vekk actually means crooked, dishonourable, but it is used as an expletive for all occasions.
Example - In Uldaman, the over-confident orc warrior in your party charges forward into a room and is attacked by seven dwarves at the same time. In the battle that follows everyone in the party comes close to being killed.
"Vekk! What the vekk are you doin', mon? You almos' got us killed, you vekking piece of vask."
A noun that means excrement. Vask is used to describe something that is unpleasant or worthless.
Example - A troublesome guild-mate tells you that he has been given special voodoo powers by the High Priest of a long-lost tribe of trolls.
"Hah! Dat is da biggest cart-load of vask I ever heard."
A Zandali word for a no
Top 5 Mistakes (I've made over the years)To many people in comics, I only arrived a few years ago with Joe the Barbarian. Then came Hellblazer (completed in 2008 before I began working on Joe), American Vampire: SOTF, and finally Punk Rock Jesus. Once in a while someone will mention Off Road (an OGN I did with Oni back in 2004), but for the most part it seems like I've been published only these last few years when in fact I've been published professionally for a decade now.Top 5 Mistakes (I've made over the years)2 years ago in Personal More Like This
This isn't a plea to have everyone go back through my previous work--in fact, I'm glad that a lot of the books I've done over the years aren't on readers' radars. I'm proud of it all, but the books above are a nice, tight group of titles to be associated with. They're all in a similar brand, they're all recent, they all have good creators/publishers associated with them, and the artwork is mostly consistent. Go back further than that, and you'll see artwork that looks nothing like the stuff I'm doing these days. (Although Off Road still holds up to some de

I know I still haven't answered my messages, I will I promise, believe me I'm dependable I'm a tiger.
So, lots of people keep asking for tutorials, lineart tutorials, coloring tutorials, anatomy tutorials...
I thought sure I will draw plenty of tutorials I can share some step by step stuff and stuff and things and stuff...
As long as it's helpful why not. But I wonder is it really helpful? I used to collect tutorials, every type of tutorials but to be honest I've never used them. I watched lot of livestreams instead to find out what is the difference exactly, what it looks like when professionals work. There is nothing, the same process just with more knowledge. To be exact much more knowledge. The conclusion is a tutorial is not enough for learning something, but if you make studies, there is n
Personal updateIt's been a while... But hey, here we go.Personal update1 month ago in Art Features More Like This
I've been having a break for the last few months, and for a good reason -- a lot of shit happened. The break gave me a lot of time to think about stuff. During that time I've seriously considered not coming back at all. But the friendly but concerned messages that I received from those that were still following me kinda persuade me to keep things updated -- at least once in a while.
I've most spend the last few weeks creating stuff in solitude. I haven't spend much time on social media, but made lots of sketches, speed paints, and concepts and chapters for my story. And I have to admit, I kinda came to like that silence. Social media --any kind of social media, DA included-- is like a black hole. It's easy to lose time that could've better spend creating. It's easy to lose focus. And it's easy to become numb by the continuous chatter. Because on the internet every person has an opinion on everyone and their moms, and not seeing the face of the

This is my first feature journal out of several that I will be doing daily (until my membership runs out) - Most of them will be winged-beasties but I will also be slipping in a few medieval & mythological creatures every once in awhile too.

As DeviantArt grows, we strive to find more ways to connect you with the things and people that matter to you most. After months of designing, testing, and engaging in community conversations around the shape of things to come, we're proud to announce a series of features that will bring you closer to the community.
Our guiding principles are to bring you a better, fresher, yet familiar site experience, giving you more power to do what you want and, more importantly, create deeper connections between your friends and favorite artists.

It's been a month or more since I last did a journal--figured you all might like to have yet *another* journal crowding your inboxes and since I just roll that way, here it is!
I don't know how everybody else's autumn went but here it was really quite good until the last week. Last Saturday it was 70 F and a real pleasant day. Sunday a front came through and we've had nothing but clouds and cold and snow and below zero temps. I guess we had to pay for all the nice weather we've had here sometime
I've finally got a little time to unwind and try to get caught up on DA...an impossible task, really. No amount of free time will gain me an 'in control' inbox, I think. I've actually got some irons in the fire other than here and they have been taking up the majority of any time not working.
I hope you all have been enjoying life and li

It's been a long summer that has been way too short. Work tends to quickly consume my time with excruciating slowness. I do apologize for my not being around a lot except for some faving and running. It's all I can manage to do here at this time. I've purposefully kept my submissions on the sparse side because of that fact. I don't feel right having a couple hundred deviation stacks waiting for comments, faving or deletion and submitting a bunch of my own. 'Blue Storm' will probably be my last for quite some time I'm afraid. I haven't done a lot of shooting and work is getting kind of out of hand and there's no let up in sight.
I'll still be around doing my favNinja thing, spouting comments here and there when I can and maybe posting a journal or two to feature your works

[GUIA] HTML no DAAve! :iconkittydividerredplz:[GUIA] HTML no DA2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The World of Water and ArtThroughout the history of man, the power of water has been worshipped in the form the deities who control the oceans, seas and rain. Through worship, mankind acknowledged the power of water to bring life and cause death. Water cleanses, refreshes and renews. Water is all around and is an integral component of all living things. The World of Water and Art1 year ago in Personal More Like This
In many ways, water is much like art to the artist. The artist sees art and inspiration all around. Art is integral to who the artist is at a very primary level. For the artist, art cleanses the soul, renews the spirit and gives life to the inanimate. Art flows from the artist in a spring of creativity sometimes in a cascade and sometimes as a quiet trickle. We, like our ancestors, are moved by the power of water.
These few selections from Love-New-Artists demonstrate the inspiration of the world of water on the world of art.
Enjoy the inspiration!
