Jace woke to the sound of crying. Summer sunshine was pouring through the windows of the country house even though the morning was still early. Clary stirred as well, lifting her head from his chest to look at the door. Leaning down, Jace brushed his lips lightly across hers.
Ill go, he murmured. She blinked sleepily at him and smiled.
He slid out from under the covers and reached for his dressing gown, pausing at the door for a brief moment to glance wistfully back at his wife. The sunlight bathed her bare skin with a warm glow, illuminating the thin white Rune Marks and shining off her hair.
The crying was coming from the nursery. Baby Luke, just over a year old, was standing up in his crib, holding on to the bars with tiny hands.

The room was empty, though the bed clothes were crumpled. He felt a stab of disappointment, wondering where she could possibly be. Izzy had taken her new pet mundane to the park and Alec was adding runes to a dagger in the weapons room. With everyone else distracted he had hoped for the chance to talk to Clary alone, talk to her normally without interruptions from Forsaken, mad witches and mundanes. He had thought he might take her up to the greenhouse; she seemed the sort of person who would be able to appreciate its beauty.
He was about to leave to search for her in the kitchen or library when something caught his eye. It was a sketchpad, lying on the bedside table with a graphite pencil resting on top. He closed the door behind him and went to sit on her bed, pickin

Jace set her down on the couch. He slid his hands out from under her legs and back, resting her head lightly on a pillow. He hastily backed away from her, resisting the urge to touch her hair, wipe it from her face. But he couldn't give himself away. How could he explain something that he didn't understand himself. He turned around to see Alec staring at him wide eyed, and Isabelle looking slightly confused. Wow, Isabelle thought to herself, he carried her like she was glass, like he could break her at any moment, since when does he care about anyone, or anything for that matter, like that?
"What?" Jace demanded.
"Why did we bring her all the way here Jace?" It was Alec who spoke.
"Well what was I supposed to do?"
"You could have just given her the healing rune and left her in the apartment Jace! Now when she wakes up were going to have to explain all this!" He threw his hands up in the air in frustration.

Taking her hand Jace led Clary down the greenhouse stairs. Her skin seemed to tingle with electricity where it touched his. The Institute was dark and quiet around them. Her skin glowed in the faint light cast by the witchlight rune-stone in her hand. He smiled to himself, glad that he had been able to give her a birthday present when no-one else had.
She caught him casting her a sideways glance as they walked and smiled that bewitching smile of hers.
You know, I havent seen your room yet, she pointed out.
Jaces heart suddenly pounded faster. Do you want me to show you?
Towing her in another direction he guided her down the corridor. Reaching his room he opened the door for her; she stepped inside and he closed the door behind them.
He suddenly wondered what she would think of his compulsively neat bedroom. The brief glimpse he had had of her own room as he had dragged her unconscious body from

Clary smiled up at the huge gothic cathedral with its arching spires. She didnt even see the glamour that concealed the Institute anymore unless she concentrated hard. The door opened at her light touch as if it recognised her now, without her even needing to think the entry words. The autumn sunlight streamed through the windows of the foyer, casting puddles of golden light on the marble floor.
She looked at herself in the elevator mirror as she rode up, tilting her head to examine her reflection. She had spent far longer than usual getting ready today. It was the first time she had visited the Institute since they had all returned from Alicante a few days ago, since she and Jace were officially together, and she hadnt been able to decide what to wear. She ended up in her normal clothes; faded jeans, trainers and a simple t-shirt Simon had given her with the slogan I Bite he had given i

No well yes, but that wasnt what I was talking about.
What then? She was starting to get annoyed with him the others had all decided to go back to bed for a few more hours before going after the Cup at midday, when the sun would be brightest and the demons weakest, but Jace had refused to allow her to.
I realised that you dont know how to defend yourself, a skill that you might need if we are going after the Cup, he said over his shoulder at her.
Hey! she said, feeling rankled. I did just fine in Du Mort - I managed to hit that werewolf, didnt I? though she would be the first to admit that had been a spectacular fluke.

"Just because you call an electric eel a rubber duck doesn't make it a rubber duck, does it? And God help the poor bastard who decides they want to take a bath with the duckie."
"Haven't you ever heard that modesty is an attractive trait?"
"Only from ugly people," Jace confided. "The meek may inherit the earth, but at the moment it belongs to the conceited. Like me."
'Clary stopped dead in her tracks. "Simon?"
"Oh, God," said Jace, sounding resigned. "And here I'd actually hoped I'd got hold of something interesting."
Isabelle ignored him. "JACE WAYLAND," she said. "Explain yourself."
Jace was glaring at the cat. "I told you to bring me to Alec! Backstabbing Judas."
"If you know how to cook maybe I would eat," Jace muttered.
Isabelle froze, her spoon poised dangerously. "What did you say?"
Jace edged towards the fridge. "I said I'm going to look for a snack to eat."

The girl spun around. Standing in the doorway of the storage room was the bouncer from the entrance and a Mundane boy with thick glasses and floppy hair. Clary, the boy had called her. It was a cute name, Jace thought. It suited her somehow.
Why are you in here by yourself? the boy continued. He was wearing ridiculous clothing for Pandemonium, loose jeans and a faded t-shirt, and was blinking at the girl stupidly, utterly blind like every other Mundane. Most other Mundanes, Jace amended in his head, looking at Clarys baffled expression. What happened to those guys, the ones you said had knives?
So shed been telling the truth, she had alerted the police or told the club security in any case. She was sensible, Jace realised, trying to do the right thing. He growled. "Does it look like I'm not?"
"Smooth move, Izzy," Alec said under his breath.
Clary watched in silence, not wanting Jace to be angry with her for asking him stupid things and because he truly looked frightening at that moment. His jaw was set tight, his back muscles tight, hands clenched into fists, and gold eyes that pierced your soul with just one glare. All of that mixed together with Jace's attitude wasn't a very pleasant experience for anyone, especially Clary since she's always the one to calm him down.
"Sorry," Isabelle mumbled while looking down at the floor.
Jace growled again before turning to face the doorway. He threw Clary an apologetic glance before marching out of the doors and out into the hall. Clary knew not to go after him, but also knew exactly where he was going. The garden.

Clary looked over at him. They were sitting at the bar in Magnuss house at a party for something. She couldnt remember exactly what the occasion was. She nodded and got down from her chair.
What about Izzy and Alec? she said as she scanned the room. She saw Izzy talking to a faerie knight and Alec and Magnus were on the other side of the room.
They can take care of themselves, Jace said following her gaze. He turned back to her. Lets ditch this joint.
He placed his hand at the small of her back and guided her towards the door. He grabbed her light coat off the coat rack by the door and helped her put it on. Then he held the door open for her as they exited the building.

Clary made fun of him about his new look; but then, Clary found everything about Simon's love life borderline hilarious. She couldn't believe he was dating Isabelle in any serious way. Of course, she also couldn't believe he was also dating Maia Roberts, a friend of theirs who happened to e a werewolf, in an equally serious way. And she really couldn't believe that Simon hadn't yet told either of them about the other.

"They're staring at you. Maybe their master died and they're looking for another vampire to own them. You could have pets." She grinned.
"Or," Simon said, "Maybe they're here for the hash browns."

Pressed up hard against the wall, Clary felt the heat of Jaces lips roam her helpless body. She was in his mercy, waiting for him to do something. Hed led her into this room without a word or sign of what was going to happen, but by a pained look. A look she had been seeing a lot from him in the past few days. The expression on his face was torture enough to witness, but his entire body appeared to mirror his sadness. Clary would see him walking around the house in Alicante, capture the moment Jace laid eyes on her with the beat of her heart, and then observe a sudden change. His confident and unbelievably flawless air about him would abolish and leave behind one of grief.
She followed Jace into this room hoping for an explanation, some kind of reason she shouldnt stay up at night, traumatised by the thought of him in such pain. She just didnt expect it to be so pronounced. Clary had walked into

Come in, she told him. She had been leaning against the headboard of the bed in her cotton pyjamas, her sketchpad resting on her knees, drawing by the light of a single bedside lamp.
Jace pushed open the door, but hovered in the threshold. I saw the light under your door. I didnt wake you up?
No, Clary replied, shaking her head.
Good. Jace came into to room, closing the door behind him. He was wearing pyjama trousers, but no shirt. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw her looking at him, so he turned to look into her eyes. He bent down to brush his lips across hers before he turned back to the fireworks. It was highly discomforting knowing that the lives of every Nephilim on Valentines ship depended on him not loosing consciousness.
