LHA CONTEST 2012: OPPOSITESWhat’s up?LHA CONTEST 2012: OPPOSITES2 years ago in Personal More Like This
As many of you will remember from last year’s festivities, August 13th is a very special day for lefties everywhere! Left Handers’ Day is a day where we can all get together freely and talk about our scissor preferences, smudged writing and how many times we’ve been heard: “Hey! Are you left handed?”.
Of course, we can do that any day. But on the 13th of August we have an awesome excuse. And once again, we’re providing you with the perfect excuse to put on that thinking cap and grab your art supplies to create something awesome for the LHA 2012 contest!
There are two sides to every coin: good and evil, day and night, law and chaos, left and right. This year’s theme is all about opposites, however you want to interpret them! Your piece can include any and all opposites, limited to only your imagination. It doesn’t have to relate to left-handedness, but just contrasting themes and o

The Ever Evolving Icon
What is it about a fictional character first introduced to the public in Great Britain in 1887 that has kept him being reincarnated, with generationally-correct upgrades, over and over again in film and on television? Who is this literary hero whose portrayal over the past century by such past masters as Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett to today’s vanguard talents Robert Downey, Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch has inspired such a continuing outpouring of fan appreciation?

Background TipsHey all! I've gotten a few people asking me about advice for drawing backgrounds. So instead of being a true gentleman and writing each person back separately, I figure it's easier to tackle this with an nice, impersonal journal post! Maybe one day I'll shoot a tutorial or something to actually demonstrate what I'm talking about, but for now a quick list will have to do.Background Tips3 years ago in Personal More Like This
*Before I start, a quick disclaimerby no means do I have "it" figured out. My opinions on backgrounds and how to tackle them are always changing. And a lot of what I think is based on the artists on whose shoulders I stand upon. Feel free to disagree with any of this.
Remember those point-and-click adventure games from the 90s? I loved those games! Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Flashback, Full Throttle, Space Quest, Hero Questadventure games blew me away by how beautiful, imaginative and expansi

Username Changes Now AvailableDeviantART has been around for almost twelve years, and in that time, we've seen artists grow from hobbyists to students to professionals. For years, we've been getting requests from the community asking for the ability to change usernames. We realize that as an artist, it's important to give you the ability to change your personal brand, just as you change your interests, skills, and art types.
How It Works
Deviants can now change their username in their Settings. To change your username, you must have an active Premium Membership. (The reason there is a "fee" associated with the change is because switching usernames is a complex technical proce
Steve Jobs - Community Contest & Tribute:icontechgnotic:Steve Jobs - Community Contest & Tribute3 years ago in Personal More Like This
A number of media outlets are closely monitoring the artistic response by our community to the death of Steve Jobs.
For me, Steve Jobs is an icon. The John Lennon of our time. And while his wife and children, as well as Apple and Pixar, are the landmarks of his life, Steve Jobs encapsulates the core values that have inspired a generation, separate from the images put forth by his companies.
It is his iconography that we as a community should come together and try our hands at capturing. No small feat, but it is precisely what I'd like to see us do. The iconography of Steve Jobs himself. Apple and Pixar and those types of images aside, Steve Jobs transcends these accomplishments through the meaning of his life's work, his vision, and the inspiration that he will continue to be to us all.
Iconography is the branch of art history which studies the identification, description, and the int
Pixar's Brave: A Question, PleaseUPDATE 5 JULY 2012Pixar's Brave: A Question, Please2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Thank you, everyone for your thoughtful and lovely feedback. MiniMax and I discussed seeing the movie, what might be involved emotionally, and her current feelings/memories of mom.
We talked about the last Pixar movie she'd seen with a worrisome theme -- Finding Nemo -- and she was perfectly okay with that film, loved it even. But I learned something amusing from that exchange...
Me: So, the fact that Nemo's mom was lost early in the story, and it was just him and dad from that point on didn't bother you?
Her: Well... it was only recently I realized she'd died. I'd always assumed she was just away on a business trip or something.
So, the verdict: she wants to see Brave, and anticipates no problems whatsoever. Now all we have to do is set a date.
ORIGINAL JOURNAL BELOW
I'm totally amped to see this movie, and was planning to take MiniMaximus.
However... I've heard conflicting reports that a ma
DeviantArt Customisation ExplainedThis article, is my attempt to help answer a lot of questions I get from people asking about various ways of customising your dA experience. I attempted numerous times to write out a tutorial with code specifics but then I thought, no, there are already enough tutorials out there that are probably more specific and accurate than me. What I thought would be best, would be to compile a bunch of resources in an organised and explained way, so that you can each learn for yourselves the best way to customise your dA.DeviantArt Customisation Explained4 years ago in Art Features More Like This

Ok, this is definitely the most asked of all the questions . Rather than explain things to you myself, here are the tutorials that I have found most useful, as they provide exact code for you to copy and paste, and screenshots to show you how things should look when you do it yourself;

Benedict Cumberbatch's Lisp + AdorableHow the fuck did I not notice this before?Benedict Cumberbatch's Lisp + Adorable4 years ago in Personal More Like This
My heart swells with even MORE love for the man. I just can't even handle this, I can't. He is the most adorable thing... EVER.
Just listen starting at around 2:10, and .. just keep on through 2:52.
I somehow did not even know that he had a lisp, but now I'm going through and picking it out wherever I can in interviews. Which is actually probably VERY creepy, especially since he knows about the Cumberbitches, but I really... well, any excuse to watch more of him. It's for RESEARCH, GUYS. RESEARCH.
So here we go:

Thor (2011) - Movie ReviewThorThor (2011) - Movie Review4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins & Idris Elba
Running Time: 114 mins.
When it comes to adapting comic-book material into workable screenplays Marvel Comic's 'Thor' seems about as workable as creating a live-action portrayal of Super Mario's Mushroom Kingdom (and we all know how well that turned out in 1993). While 'Iron Man', 'The Incredible Hulk' and the upcoming 'Captain America: The First Avenger' movies are grounded in reality (or about as grounded as superhero movies are) 'Thor' is a completely different story as our protagonist is literally the lightning god of thunder from another dimension. Thor (Hemsworth) reignites a war within his realm of Asgard and is banished to earth by his father Odin (Hopkins) to learn humility. Once Thor has learnt his lesson and prove himself worthy he will be able to access his god-like powers and wield his magical hammer Mjolnir once more.
