The evening went undisturbed for the rest of the night. Lara had gone in to wake Kurtis at 3am, much to his disapproval, and he took over the watching. The night was silent for him too, and when Lara rose and showered at 8am the two packed up their stuff and headed out. There was a tension in the air between them after the evenings passionate incident, but neither of them wished to discuss it, especially Lara, who would rather have continued to act as if nothing had happened at all. But Kurtis was waiting for the right moment to ask Lara what she really felt for him, but he knew this was not it. She walked at a brisk pace, almost stomping her feet on the hard surface beneath them.
They were planning to ride to Heathrow to see if they could book a flight to New York, where theyd pick up Kurtis research in his apartment and use it to help them. Both were hoping the Black Riders wouldnt follow too quickly so they had time to rest up and come up with a s

Time was dragging nastily and Lara was beginning to break out in a hot flush. The sun was now at the midpoint in the sky and the heat was immense. Haze surrounded her eyes and she was desperate for a drink of water. At first she thought she was hallucinating, but as she came closer to what she thought appeared to be a crossroads, her vision cleared and she stopped a couple of inches from the road. She could either go straight ahead, or left or right. She shut off the engine and looked at the time. It had been three hours since shed called Max and there was still no sign of rescue. She was about to give up all hope when in the far distance she could hear what sounded like chopper blades. Lara stepped out of the jeep and climbed onto the roof, taking her binoculars from her backpack. She inspected every inch of the sky but could see nothing, and thought that perhaps she was dehydrating from lack of fluids. She climbed into the back seat to check on Kurtis condition an

After landing safely at John F Kennedy International Airport, they hailed a coach that took them all the way into the city. They then caught a taxi from the bus station to take them to west seventy-fifth street where Kurtis apartment was. It was around 1:30am when they arrived, and the entire apartment block was blacked out, apart from the small nightlights in the hallways. They took an elevator onto the ninth floor and proceeded to number 97, Kurtis humble abode. He opened the door and flicked on the switch nearest him. The living room lights flared into life, exposing Kurtis relaxed lifestyle. Lara looked around with a raise eyebrow, taking in her new surroundings.
So this is your place? she enquired, stating the obvious.
Yup, sure is darlin. Why, did you think Id broken in somewhere? he laughed.
Well it looks as if its been broken into. The place is a state. How can you find anything in this hovel?

Zip and Alistair sat slurping their coffees whilst giggling over an amateur jackass video they found on Youtube. They jumped when the tech room door was forced open and slammed against the wall, rebounding closed again after Lara had entered. If she had seemed distant earlier all trace of grief was absent now as she displayed a fierce facial expression and her trademark raiding gear. She stomped over to the back wall and punched in the combination on the wall safe to reveal her grapple and PDA system. She attached her grapple to her belt and backpacked her PDA then turned to Zip.
Ill connect to you if I run into trouble at the museum, she said, picking up an ear piece and attaching it to her right ear. If all goes smoothly it should just be a casual meeting as suggested. She turned to leave but as she did, Alistair called to her.
Lara. Are you sure about this? You thought you lost this man five years ago during the darkest time in your lif

As the truck rumbled down a dirt track that climbed down the side of a steep mountain, Lara knew Kurtis would never make it home in the condition he was in. Her only hope was to find the nearest town with a doctor. Or better still, a hospital.
Kurtis groaned painfully behind her and she snapped her head back to take a look at him. He was waking up and trying to sit up but the movement of the vehicle was making it difficult.
Kurtis, can you hear me? Lara asked, speaking loudly and slowly so he had time to register the words. Kurtis?
He groaned again and slowly turned his head in her direction.
Lara? It was barely a whisper but it was there. Lara had to turn back to face the road, but she kept her head slightly cocked to the right in an attempt to talk over her shoulder.
Kurtis, youre badly injured. Im trying to find a hospital so hold on and try not to move, okay?
He grunted his response and she watched him in t
