Women ArtistsThe other day, I attempted to put together a huge list of some professional and semi-pro women artists over on my tumblr, because it seems like too often women get overlooked when it comes to being honored and recognized. This year, I was incredibly honored to be nominated for a Hugo award in the Best Professional Artist category, but I was a little shocked to find out there hadn’t been another woman nominated in that category since Rowena Morrill in 1986. That’s more than a little ridiculous, considering there are so many women artists out there who are all amazing, who offer unique points of view and design solutions, and who need more visibility and recognition. While putting this list together, I was really excited to find tons of new artists I'd never heard of before.Women Artists1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Hey guys, birds knees do NOT bend backwardsI hope most of you know that, but since no lesser of a source then Scientific American just got that wrong, I thought it might be something that needs to be addressed. Blog post here: http://skeletaldrawing.blogspot.com/2011/09/um-hey-scientific-american-bird-knees.htmlHey guys, birds knees do NOT bend backwards3 years ago in Personal More Like This
The short and long of it is that birds knees and thighs are hidden under their body and wing feathers, so sometimes when people look at their ankles (which are quite high on their legs) they mistake them for a knee that bends the wrong way. It's not the knee!
This isn't just important to science nerds and 2-D artists, but it's especially critical to 3-D artists (and the people who rig and animate 3-D models). So please, please, please, tell your friends and relatives that bird knees bend the same way as the knees of everything else.
For those who like to know such things, the bird skeletal above is my Presbyornis skeletal, while the Homo sapiens skeletal is adapted from Ch
My new website design and fancy illustration blog!Hello dear colleagues! My new website design and fancy illustration blog!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
My portfolio website has a new design I used one of the amazing Wordpress themes from GoodLayers.com . What I like most about this is how easily a blog is integrated into it. Now I finally have a blog inside my website instead of a separate one!
Also, I like the dropdown menus! Finally I can add some content without creating chaos
Also, I used to have a blog about painting on tumblr but I'm no longer using it now. Instead I plan to continue this new one. There, unlike on tumblr, I have full control over the design, and it is more serious looking:
Here I will now write about all things illustration and art that happen to interest me
Please visit and enjoy reading. Your feedback is much appreciated too!

I think this is a good time as any to spill the beans about the personal project I've been working on for the past year:
A graphic novel trilogy telling the story of the Franklin Expedition.
Volume one is finished, volume 2 almost finished, volume 3 in progress.
The first book will be released in spring of 2015 in Germany.

My Mind Map
I made this mind map a few weeks ago and I'm pretty excited about it. (I made the map using a program called MindNode [link]). It describes all the areas of the work I do as an artist (or want to do). Making a map like this was suggested in "The Profitable Artist."
I divided my work into four main components that are important to me:
Original Content Creation - Writing stories and telling those stories through art. This also includes creating educational material.
Free Play - Learning ab
