An IMPORTANT NOTE to all artists! Please read this if you are someone who offers commissions, or someone who KNOWS anyone who offers commissions, cares about anyone who offers commissions, etc. etc. etc. This is both a warning against certain types of people who would take advantage of you, as well as a reminder about why it's important to be aware of your own worth as an artist and the services you are offering to others! I also hope it's helpful to those who do not make art, and like to buy commissions, as it may give you some insight about how to not be offensive to the artist who is doing work for you.An IMPORTANT NOTE to all artists!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Without naming any names (but if any of this gets personal on the other side of it, this will become a PSA against taking commissions from specific folks, so let it be known that I tried to play nice out the gate), someone I know recently took a commission for what is, in my opinion, an INCREDIBLY low amount of money. What they were offering was worth way more, quality-wise as well as content-wise, than what w
Legend of Korra: Costume Design! One of the neat things about being the lead designer of a show like Young Justice is getting to interact with the fans through sites like this one, seeing the awesome fan art you guys do is a big inspiration for myself and a lot of the other artists and writers on the show. It really keeps us motivated knowing that you guys and girls appreciate the characters and stories we are creating. Along with great art my other favorite aspect of fandom, and easily the most hardcore representation of it, is the cosplayers and their dedication to show accurate costumes. So with SDCC right around the corner I thought I would share a little something interesting with all you Legend of Korra fans out there, as well as cosplayers in general. Last year at around this time my good buddy, Joaquim http://2-cents.deviantart.com/, who is a co-executive producer on Korra, asked my wife, she is a clothing designer by trade, to create a show accurate Korra outfit to be worn by the official model representing tLegend of Korra: Costume Design!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Ass-vengers: My gratitude and a favor to ask...Hey, gang! I've been really excited to hear that my "Avengers Booty Ass-emble" piece...Ass-vengers: My gratitude and a favor to ask...3 years ago in Personal More Like This
... has been getting a lot of attention on tumblr, facebook, etc (even George Takei posted it. Wowza!) For that, I want to give a heartfelt thanks to folks who've been kind enough to share it with others. That sort of thing always tickles me and I really appreciate it.
Now, I have a favor to ask of you guys. The unfortunate drawback to my work going viral is that a lot of people are posting it without credit. I typically don't care about whether I get credit or not, but as a freelance artist it's pretty important that my name be associated with my work, especially if it's getting as much exposure as this piece has. That said, if you peeps happen to see it posted somewhere without my name or a credit, would take a moment to politely request that the person posting give credit and, if possible, link to my webpage, www.kevinbolk.com?

Stylization and Avoiding Being an Art AssholeStumbled on an "anatomy blog" showcasing breakdowns of [mostly] bad art to highlight how broken their anatomy is. Which is fine, it can be a great learning tool and exercise, but finding obviously stylized work by master character designers getting shat on by amateur artists is...frustrating**.Stylization and Avoiding Being an Art Asshole3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Designs like these come from a shape-based theory of character design where anatomy doesn't matter as much as mood and implication. It's part of a design language stretching back to studios like Bauhaus and UPA.
If you're looking at something designed like Kim Possible* and going "HAHA THIS WORK IS SHIT LOOK THEIR HIPS ARE TOO LOW THAT'S NOT HOW PEOPLE ARE BUILT!" you are missing the point. THOSE designers aren't going for verisimilitude. Fidelty wasn't the point. The point is matching the feel of a character and making them match their world.

Art Tutorial StuffI just now (funny how the brain works) remembered that I sent :iconesda06: an e-mail back in December with some art stuff after I was like "oh yeah! Dresden Codak's creator has an awesome Tumblr with some good tutorials for you ART people who do ARTS!" but I don't think she ever posted it on here (if she did, then I guess we have a repeat).Art Tutorial Stuff3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Also, make sure you click on the last link. It's the best resource for athletic bodies I've ever seen, in the sense that I never knew there were so many body types purely among physically fit people.

You know who hates the disabled more than anyone else? Parents of disabled kids.
They hate being reminded of their sons and daughters, and what they have to go through. They're offended by portrayals of people with disorders, because they think it's a conspiracy, some dig at their and their child's struggle. Anything that can be vaguely tied back to their anguish is something they rally against.
You're not allowed to talk about them. You're not allowed to look at them. They're not allowed to join the conversation. We're not allowed to have opinions about them, and they're not allowed to have opinions at all. They're not allowed to be in our movies, our games, our books, our stories, our culture. If one of them does manage to squeak through the defenses, we will go back and scrub out any defining character flaws. All because parents with weak convictions are repulsed by the sight o

Recently, YouTube made me a partner or something. That means certain videos I upload there will make money for me with ads.
Not as much as Blip, or TGWTG...but that's because I don't have much of a precence on YouTube right now, especially since I got locked out on my old account. I still haven't heard from anyone about that...
Youtube is fun that way...for example, they have no problem hosting my "Top 11 Simpsons Halloween Special" but when I tried to upload my review on "Lindsey Neagle", that earned my a Copyright strike. What does that mean...well it means that for the next 6 months... Yes, 6 Months!...I can't upload any new videos that are over 15 minutes, which excludes a lot of my best new stuff, Most of which I don't want to break up, because they just barely go over 15 minutes.
And to make matters worse...there's a deadline...if you don't make a $100 dollars by the end of each month,

I think we've been trained by boring autistic-type art people who work in children's animation and mainstream comics and BORING FANTASY ART, and HEY MAN IM A STEAMPUNK/SPACE ARTIST, and ANIME and ARGH!!!... to have expectations that our art should be this eternal monolith of consistency, and branding ourselves means specializing to a fault and never ever escaping from that specialty.
Also, we tend to tie our pride and workmanship to our art. So giving up something people recognize, probably seems counter-intuitive.
But like, if attempt to draw in a new way, the new approach will always give you perspective on your old approach. Once you've exhausted every possible approach on a style or mode of thought, finding something new and exciting in that world you've mastered becomes like a test of faith. You're essentially waiting for a bolt of inspiration from another plane

The recently announced changes to the core mythos of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the backlash from fans over the ending to Mass Effect 3 have ignited an incredible discussion about the rapidly evolving “collaborative” relationship between producers and consumers of videogames, movies, and similar “products.” Now it’s exploded beyond the secure borders of top news publications, gamin

Look, at the end of the day, this site provides a service. You can choose to pay for it, or you can choose to not pay for it. It works either way. If you really don't like it, not only should you not pay for it, but don't use it. No one is forcing you to.
It seems like a lot of people seem to think that being a member of this site gives them ownership of it. It doesn't. Be grateful it exists. Be happy that it is (now) profitable. For a long time it wasn't. The people who work on it deserve to make some money - they work hard.
If you don't agree with any of this, I think you're lacking in perspective. There's nothing keeping you here if you don't want to be. I think DA does a great job of listening to a vast community and trying to make changes to please it's members. It can't be incredibly dynamic and flexible to accomodate e

It's been a long time. Every entry has been a long time. I have since started migrating my energy to film making. This was the goal in the beginning. And no time better than now. I've been starting to team up with my brother Phi to discuss the future. It seems that my brother has been doing extremely well and I'm very proud of him.
I've been making music videos for local artists. I decided on starting in this because musicians are promotion machines. They generally have a fan base so after I finish the product for them, I don't have to do much to get my name out there. Musicians are lined up to have me direct t heir videos. But now I want to do non music videos. I'm going to finish up a feature script that I've been working on for a few years now. So far the feedback has been great. I'm trying to create something r

SOPA, Hypocrisy, Scandal, DMCA, and CensorshipMissing The PointSOPA, Hypocrisy, Scandal, DMCA, and Censorship3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've been disappointed to see the various responses to SOPA, especially the "DEVIATION CENSORED" images. They so completely miss the point that I can only assume the people posting them have absolutely no comprehension of what SOPA means, why it's a problem, and what they're actually protesting against.
First off, SOPA is not about censorship. Unfortunately, many of the opponents of SOPA decided to cast it as being about censorship in order to mobilize public opinion. Why did they do that? Unfortunately, they did that for two reasons: 1) they knew that without mobilizing mass support, the bill would go through and 2) they knew that the masses they wanted to get support from simply don't care/understand the real problem enough to do anything - because the truth is much to complicated for the typical internet user. I have some sympathy for that view, because I've discovered over and over again that copyright is, in fact, too complicated for the typi
