Stylization and Avoiding Being an Art AssholeStumbled on an "anatomy blog" showcasing breakdowns of [mostly] bad art to highlight how broken their anatomy is. Which is fine, it can be a great learning tool and exercise, but finding obviously stylized work by master character designers getting shat on by amateur artists is...frustrating**.Stylization and Avoiding Being an Art Asshole3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Designs like these come from a shape-based theory of character design where anatomy doesn't matter as much as mood and implication. It's part of a design language stretching back to studios like Bauhaus and UPA.
If you're looking at something designed like Kim Possible* and going "HAHA THIS WORK IS SHIT LOOK THEIR HIPS ARE TOO LOW THAT'S NOT HOW PEOPLE ARE BUILT!" you are missing the point. THOSE designers aren't going for verisimilitude. Fidelty wasn't the point. The point is matching the feel of a character and making them match their world.

Urgent! Need Help With Exposure on YouTube!I need $20....I need it so I can make a $100. Let me explain:Urgent! Need Help With Exposure on YouTube!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Recently, YouTube made me a partner or something. That means certain videos I upload there will make money for me with ads.
Not as much as Blip, or TGWTG...but that's because I don't have much of a precence on YouTube right now, especially since I got locked out on my old account. I still haven't heard from anyone about that...
Youtube is fun that way...for example, they have no problem hosting my "Top 11 Simpsons Halloween Special" but when I tried to upload my review on "Lindsey Neagle", that earned my a Copyright strike. What does that mean...well it means that for the next 6 months... Yes, 6 Months!...I can't upload any new videos that are over 15 minutes, which excludes a lot of my best new stuff, Most of which I don't want to break up, because they just barely go over 15 minutes.
And to make matters worse...there's a deadline...if you don't make a $100 dollars by the end of each month,

About Project Porkchop
The DeviantArt Experience can sometimes quickly become the quintessential example of that most frustrating problem: too much of a good thing. There just aren’t enough hours in the day to peruse the thousands of submissions and postings of artistic innovation, creativity and sheer beauty that are generated everyday.
So thank you for ProjectPorkchop!
Astralseed, an Icelandic deviant artist with a penchant for equines, including Quirlicorns (a breed of unicorns), has made our busy lives so much easier with ProjectPorkchop, a feature she started on her DeviantArt page. Project Porkchop’s fine eye for the best of the newly submitted artworks of virtually unknown artists, the incredible art tha

10. Gladiator (2000) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FI1ylg4GKv8&feature=fvsr
Gladiator is a bare bones type of fight film. It takes you back to one of the earliest examples of fighting as a sport. A cruel sport, but still a sport. Russell Crowe gave an Oscar winning performance as an army general turned slave who fights to avenge the death of his wife and son. Although the best part about this scene is Joaquin Phoenix's tongue. Where did that thing come from?
9. 300 (2006) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCfdyroV7kc
Speaking of old school fighting. 300 is a live action war film adapted from the Frank Miller graphic novel of the same name. It features a lot of stylized action sequences but plenty of gore. In the film a group of 300 Spartans go up against several armies m

Hey kids, if you're sick of shittily run, biased-as-hell, no-fun-at-all, dramallamadingdong in your OCT life, might I suggest these better options?
These are all Leagues, which are different from OCTs. Leagues stay open forever, they don't have joining deadlines, and you can challenge whomever, whenever, and can enter as many characters as you want (usually). A good League will encourage self-improvement, will be well run, have an involved community, and occasionally runs their own OCTS.
(An OCT is an "Original Comic Tournament", in which you audition with a character you created. If chosen, you are paired off against artists who also made the cut and will draw comics depicting your character competing against the other artist's character. The two comics get judged, and both artists get feedback and advice on their work. The winner moves onto the next round, the loser leaves. A good OCT w

DA Journals and News Combined - And MoreFor the last few weeks, I've stood back and observed since the day DeviantArt Journals and News were combined into one entity. Seems to me that this move may not have been such a good idea.DA Journals and News Combined - And More4 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'm sure anyone who has kept track of the Journal entries on the front page of DeviantArt has noticed something reoccurring in the last few weeks. In this case, how one user, :icondoitforthelulz:, has demonstrated just how relatively easy it is for one person to practically monopolize the 5 Journals on display in the footer of the DeviantArt main page. Of course, he's been doing this on purpose to make and point and I definitely agreed.
So, what kind of disadvantages are we looking at now that Journals and News have merged?
1. With enough Watchers, just about anyone can abuse the Journal system and easily get one or several of their Journals on the front page of DeviantArt with enough Favs.
2. Finding relevant information for contests, ect. is no longer nearly as feasible, especially as Journals are

The recently announced changes to the core mythos of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the backlash from fans over the ending to Mass Effect 3 have ignited an incredible discussion about the rapidly evolving “collaborative” relationship between producers and consumers of videogames, movies, and similar “products.” Now it’s exploded beyond the secure borders of top news publications, gamin

"You are" turns into "You're". ...Unless it's at the end of a name or noun and coupled with an "s". That is possessive and is not mashing two words together, as far as I know.
That "There" is different from "Their" is different from "They're" ...Here's a trick if you're having a hard time remembering: "There" has the word "here" in it, so you can remember that it is referring to a place. And then there is the apostrophe thing I mentioned in the previous point.

i know what some of you may think here, "well, my skill level isn't going to win me anything here"
my friend, that is not the case in this event. ALL entries will be have the same amount of chance, the final winner is not based on how well the drawing or writing is done. the winner will be RANDOM. you are asked to do your best because you owe it to yourself for a good piece of work. The final piece will remain your own property, im just trying to get some activities going here. XD
you need to do one of the following to quality as an entry.
1. a drawing of a lamia in any media (traditional, digital, photo-manip, also welcome)
2. a short story involving a lamia. preferably no longer than 1 page.
there are a few versions of the lamia monster, what i am looking for is the one that is top half human, and lower half snake. now most of these are portrayed as female, but if you are up to it, feel free to make a male one.
also regarding the hair, you are free to make it snake hair or norma

Look, at the end of the day, this site provides a service. You can choose to pay for it, or you can choose to not pay for it. It works either way. If you really don't like it, not only should you not pay for it, but don't use it. No one is forcing you to.
It seems like a lot of people seem to think that being a member of this site gives them ownership of it. It doesn't. Be grateful it exists. Be happy that it is (now) profitable. For a long time it wasn't. The people who work on it deserve to make some money - they work hard.
If you don't agree with any of this, I think you're lacking in perspective. There's nothing keeping you here if you don't want to be. I think DA does a great job of listening to a vast community and trying to make changes to please it's members. It can't be incredibly dynamic and flexible to accomodate e

How to win at deviantART: ExposeddeviantART is a categories game. How to win at deviantART: Exposed4 years ago in Art Features More Like This
According to deviantART's hq, "deviantART's algorithm for Popular browse results (ie. front page) is known as Fair Exposure. The goal is to maximize the display of the most popular deviations in a variety of topics with Fair Exposure, the community is exposed to a varied cross-section of deviantART. "
What this boils down to is that certain art categories have inherent ranking advantages and others inherent ranking disadvantages on front page as a means of ensuring that a variety of works from across deviantART are visible on front page and not just that of one category. Sounds pretty good right?
Well let me say before I continue that I do not know deviantART's actual mathematical algorithm for front page ranking. However, I think that anyone who notices the composition of front pages (whether 8 hour or 24, main or by category) and the statistics of the pieces that populate those fronts pages can give you a pretty good guess.

So I wasn't able to find the motivation and didn't start working on these cards till sometime last week. I'm still accepting requests, but the likelihood of me finishing over 50 is low. I'm haphazardly working in the order that I received the request, but don't bet on it.
I have no idea how many requests to expect this year, so I wanted to start early. Thanksgiving is over in Canada and halloween isn't a real holiday anyways.
