The Ever Evolving Icon
What is it about a fictional character first introduced to the public in Great Britain in 1887 that has kept him being reincarnated, with generationally-correct upgrades, over and over again in film and on television? Who is this literary hero whose portrayal over the past century by such past masters as Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett to today’s vanguard talents Robert Downey, Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch has inspired such a continuing outpouring of fan appreciation?

According to the Chinese zodiac, 2012 has ushered in the year of the dragon upon the world stage.
In addition to occupying an ages old position in our cultural consciousness, legend and folklore surrounding

Leaving DeviantART?EDIT: I'm very pleased with the comments I've gotten so far. Because there are people who follow me exclusively on dA, I'm not going to leave when my subscription is up. I am not, however, going to be giving my money to this site anymore. Not unless things look like they're going in a better direction. Right now I'm going to wait and see how/if the developers respond to the overwhelmingly negative feedback the update has been receiving. Please keep commenting, though. I still want to hear your thoughts on the matter.Leaving DeviantART?9 months ago in Personal More Like This
I made a comment last night on the Site Update news post that I would be leaving dA once my subscription is up because of the direction the site is moving in. I thought I'd made up my mind, but I'm hesitant to just leave. Even though my watchers don't talk much, I know there are a lot of you that like my art and I want to know what you all think. I'll admit that dA has been a good resource for me, and could still be that way even if I use it about as much as my Facebook ac

Today, you may have seen it or not seen it, but Alie(:iconWhisperwings has passed on. She had terminal cancer so it wasn't a surprise but that doesn't mean it didn't hit people hard.
She was amazing, funny, strong.. everything we are and more.
But why should she be in the past tense? She will never die because she is here- vivid in our minds. Vivid on the screen and alive in her artwork with it's bright colors and skillfulness.
I never talked to her. Not even once and yet I know she is a good person who won't let anything take her down- just by reading her writing.
She's optimistic even when everything's falling and tells everyone not to worry about her. That she's ok.
Some may say she fought the battle and lost.
I say she won.
She died in the end, but don't we all die?
She won because even though she knew the sands of time would carry her away soon she didn't let it change her. Everyday she keeps strong and open. Generous and kind. She knows tha

UPDATE - Planet '106906 b' to be renamed GallifreyOla dude's !! :iconhappyfellaavatar:UPDATE - Planet '106906 b' to be renamed Gallifrey2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Just learned from Doctor Who fan Sam Menhennet, the fan who nearing the end of last year created a petition to have a newly discovered planet currently called '106906 b' renamed after the Doctor's homeworld 'Gallifrey' in Doctor Who as the recently discovered planet is said to look like the Doctor's homeworld, that he has learned that Astronomer Vanessa Bailey who discovered the planet in the first place has said she is supporting his petition to rename the newly discovered world to be called Gallifrey. This is his latest update written on New Years Day 2014 -
Happy New Year! Vanessa Bailey the astronomer who discovered the planet "HD 1069906B" has said she is supporting the cause and has written a piece that will be included in the letter to the IAU. Although we are still trying to get in contact with the BBC/ Doctor Who to get a statement from them on whether they support it or not. If anyone can get us in contact with them please email me at <

Walking westward on Prince St. between Mulberry and Mott Streets, I heard a woman's voice in my head whispering, "Who's there? Who's there?" Not like I "heard" a woman's voice like when I wear flared jeans with skinny shoes and I "hear" a woman's voice in my head say, "Wait, you've got to be kidding?" but like an actual woman's voice in my head. This usually means I've had a psychotic break.
But! Then I noticed that, above a billboard for some A&E show called Paranormal State were some speakers that looked like hypersonic sound beams, a device which uses your skull as a speaker—that is, it transmits soundwaves that resonate against whatever surface they hit.
[video] Guess Whats Being Done BEHIND YOUR BACK?Did you know that there are things that every teenager and adult is being deceptively tricked into consenting to? Before you're tempted to think this to be preposterous, I'd like to remind you of how on a more basic level, these things even happen between high school students all the time. A few assholes don't particularly like a person, so they design up an elaborate prank or deception to get them to agree to things that they have no clue as to what they are actually agreeing to. Setting them up to land in situations they have no clue they are about to land in. Its really not rocket science. Happens all the time.[video] Guess Whats Being Done BEHIND YOUR BACK?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Well, the mother of all practical jokes has been played on all of us and continues to be. Of course, more and more people are waking up to the prank and doing things about it. In fact, the more people who wake up to this practical joke being played on the masses, the easier it becomes to do even more things about it, quicker. Especially thanks to computers and the Internet.

Pepsi said they have stopped the practice of using cells from fetus' for "flavor enhancement." Pepsi said the cells from the fetus were 50 years old. Still, I don't care if the cells were 50 years or 50 seconds old, I would rather not consume baby fetus.
Obama agency rules Pepsi use of cells derived from aborted fetus ‘ordinary business’
LARGO, FL, March 5, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Pepsi Company, which is set to release the new product Pepsi Next in the coming weeks, is facing a more robust boycott as pro-life activists protest the company use of cells derived from an aborted fetus in flavor-enhancing research. But Pepsi has succeeded, with help from the Obama Administration, in keeping its controversial operations from consideration by its shareholders.

DESIGN TUTORIAL - BASIC CHARACTER CREATIONYo! I get a lot of questions on how I create my characters, such as how do I come up with color schemes, markings, the basic idea, all that cool stuff~ X3DESIGN TUTORIAL - BASIC CHARACTER CREATION2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So I'd thought I do a little design tutorial. This is a TEXT based tutorial, meant to give the tricks/tips that I use.
So prepare to read! I will be using my characters as examples.
This tutorial covers design tips for both ANIMALS AND HUMANS.
KEEP IN MIND THAT THESE ARE TIPS AND TRICKS THAT I USE.
EVERYONE MAY HAVE A DIFFERENT PROCEDURE.
The Idea: Where and How Do I start?
So you want to create a new character huh? But you don't know where to start with the process....Hmm. When I'm coming up with a new character, I start with the personality about 75% of the time. It doesn't have to be in-depth, just basic personality traits.
So for example I might want a character that is:
- Loud, aggressive, rude, doesn't give a fuck about anythi
Armageddon (The True Story)Armageddon! The very word strikes fear into the hearts of many. Others shrug it off, relegating the word to a fairy tale myth, or a Hollywood story. What is Armageddon? And how will this future battle of good vs. evil affect your life, as well as the lives of those you love? First, let's talk about what Armageddon is not. Armageddon is not a comet or asteroid smashing into the earth, causing mass destruction. Armageddon is not a nuclear war, ending all life and devastating the planet. It is not a war between nations, centered in the middle east, as many "christian" fundamentalists suggest (see the book "The Late Great Planet Earth," by Hal Linden, et al). Since the word originates in the Bible (and only once), please turn to Revelation 16:16. It states: "And they gathered them together to the place that is called in Hebrew Har-Magedon." The word "Har" means mount, or mountain, and "Magedon" is a translation of the wArmageddon (The True Story)2 years ago in Personal More Like This

Who Has Faith In Big Brother?Well, this has been a most eventful week to say the least. And you know what's the scariest part? It's not that scandals like this occur. Far from it. Both the Bush and Obama administrations have made the surveillance state so commonplace that they might as well plaster posters on every street corner telling us how "Big Brother is watching!"

A college professor actually required her students to sign this pledge in one of the classrooms at one of the public universities responsible for "educating" our children.
Yes, some left-wing radical professor--the stereotype you'd imagine a left-wing radical professor to be like--required her students to vote for Obama and the Democrats during the last election.
Political indoctrination doesn't become anymore blatant than this!
The good news is that this professor was fired; the bad news, she was allowed to teach in the first place!

Why I don't believe in the Church SplitOne thing that makes me mad is when Christians act like other Christians are not Christians only because they do not go to the same church, or don't have the exact same views on matters which really aren't that vital to salvation. Jesus prayed for our unity (John 17) - so why are we so often emphasising our differences? Why I don't believe in the Church Split2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I just find people pretty narrow who think their own denomination is the only right one. They lose A LOT. They are missing out.
I grew up in various protestant denominations - as a missionary kid you hardly get a choice, since depending where you are you won't get your preferred denomination of church (the closest to our house was baptist - we're not officially baptist), or you can get such a density of different denominations that you have a pretty broad choice (the district in Taipei where I grew up has SUCH a church density it's weird. Walk down one street and you have a presbyterian, a nazarene, a catholic and an episcopal church one after the other at 30 min

I have a great new feature that would be loved by the people who submit literature, comics, movie episodes and photo sets:
- The submitter will be able to group and order the submission set, for easy management
- There will be a next/previous button (and if someone wants it a first button) for easy navigation between the parts/chapters/episodes of the set
- Everyone will be able to favorite/watch a set. There will be an overview of the watched sets on the my.deviantart.com page, which will show all deviations in the set and shows the ones you've already seen/read greyed out.
- It will be easier the submitter to manage the deviations
- This will give the opportunity to give a name to the set (name of the story) and also a name to the parts of the set (name of the chapter), without interference.
- It will make it easier for st
Commission WidgetTook a peek at DA's new commission widget. Right idea, wrong execution IMO.Commission Widget2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'd much rather be able to accept actual money than DA's faulty and cumbersome point system, and the fact DA takes a "cut" of the commission money just for using the app is a really shitty move.
For example a $30 commission = 3000 points, but I would only get 2400 points or $24 according to the widget. That means DA is taking about a 20% cut of your earnings, which is bullshit. Also, the app only goes up to a maximum of 4000 points. So people who charge more than $40 can't use the app.
I'm probably not even doing the math correctly, it just seems overly laborious and frustratingly convoluted. I'm all for an app that makes taking commissions easier, and honestly 10 years was a LONG way to wait for such an app to finally be implemented.. It just needs refining.
It just makes more work for the consumers to force them to put down money to buy points (which DA takes a percentage of), only to allow them to pay for a
Modern Day Phariseesby John Funk on .raptureready com http://www.raptureready.com/featured/funk/pharisees.htmlModern Day Pharisees3 years ago in Personal More Like This
During the life of Christ, the religious hierarchy consisted of the Pharisees and the Sadducees along with the scribes or lawyers of the day. The primary difference between the Pharisees and the Sadducees was that the Sadducees denied the doctrine of the resurrection of the dead. However, in many of Christ’s encounters with the various religious leaders of His day, He specifically addresses the Pharisees and scribes. When He does so, it is usually to condemn them for their religious practices.
Who were the Pharisees during the time of Christ? The origin of the word “Pharisee” comes from “Pharisaios (far-is-ah'-yos)” meaning a separatist, i.e. exclusively religious; a Pharisean, i.e. Jewish sectary (See Strong’s Greek-Hebrew Dictionary, NT:5330). According to Nelson’s Illu

This is a big deal and a great feeling. I have turned over a new leaf. I really think that today is a turning point in my life. I will no longer look at my scars as something terrible. They are apart of me, and I have to accept them before anyone else can. I don't have to love them, because they don't tell people who I am. Just because I have a little meat on my bones doesn't mean I'm fat, it means I'm healthy. Today has made me see a lot. That i don't need a man in my life to make me happy. I don't NEED a boyfriend. Or guys to even pay attention to me if they don't have respect for me and what I stand for.
Long story short, I love myself now.

So, I've been browsing Tumblr a lot in the past couple days. ...Okay more like tonight. >3>;;
But something really stood out to me by looking at some of the arguments on sammei12's tumblr.
A lot of people are really lobbying for equality.
As a Christian myself,
I notice that...
A lot of Christians are pointed at.
We are ridiculed,
we are persecuted,
we are fought against by many people,
just as hard as the wrong of us have fought against them.
We are ignored equality because the wrong of us ignored others' equality?
I know that our uninformed are to blame.
See, those who really know our Bible, or at least have been taught...
well I cant say "correct" cuz that's being judgemental.
Those who truly know,
Know that our Lord Jesus loves everyone equal.
We are taught to follow in His footsteps,
To love everyone,
No matter his or her flaw, his or her sins...
Being a Christian is
