The Powerful Gimp Tool That You May Not Be UsingHey guys, I wanted to chat a bit about a very cool tool that I don't think is used enough, especially in the realm of photomanipulation. Of course, I'm talking about Layer Masks. A layer mask allows you to dynamically change what parts of a layer are visible, and not visible by using a grayscale image parallel to your layer. But without getting into trying to explain it in text, I recommend checking out this gimp video tutorial on them: http://gimpedtutorials.com/index.php/layer-masks-explained-lesson-5-how-to-use-gimp-for-beginners/The Powerful Gimp Tool That You May Not Be Using2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I use layer masks constantly, but that doesn't mean I don't use the eraser tool too. With some proper planning, it's amazing what you can do with these things.
I use them for simple things like isolating a background in combination with the paths tool, but the real power comes from when I try to isolate hair from a background using this method: http://gimpedtutorials.com/index.php/isolate-a-background-using-color-gimp-video-tutorial

Some drawing book reviews & recommendationshi all,Some drawing book reviews & recommendations3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've been wanting to put together a list of some of my favorite books and tutorials for a while now, so here it is! all of these are resources that I use constantly and have really helped me grow as an artist. I highly recommend you check them out! :]
Creating Characters with Personality and Character Mentor by Tom Bancroft (tombancroft) http://www.amazon.com/Creating-Characters-Personality-Animation-Graphic/dp/0823023494/refd_sim_b_2 and http://www.amazon.com/Character-Mentor-Example-Expressions-Characters/dp/0240820711/refd_sim_b_3
Even if you prefer anime or a more realistic style, don't dismiss these books because of their cartoonish style. These books are filled with TONS of very useful instruction and advice that can apply to all sorts of styles. Tom Bancroft also has been doing some online workshops which sound really neat. I haven't done any yet, but I definitely want to. Check it out on his dA page: tombancroft

I plan on putting more together as well, for free of course, so keep an eye out. Just make sure you read the usage info in the pack if you decide to use them. There's a torrent file available as well.2,400 free high-res NASA images for artists2 months ago in Personal More Like This
I'm also offering up over 1,250 images of my own personal stock from Australia for super duper cheap at $6 as a way to help me offset the cost of my time in putting together the free resource packs. Check it out if that interests you at all. If not, no worries, but you can enjoy and use these free examples from the Australia pack
Hope you find the downloads useful and get some use out of them, take care!

Announcing the kick-off of the latest, greatest official photomanipulation contest! This contest is brought to you by CRPhotomanipulation and Photomanip101 in conjunction with Fantasy-Glow, PhotoManipulatorsx3, and TheArtOfManipulation. It is graciously sponsored by communityrelations.
What is this contest?

The competition lasts 8 weeks (June 17th - August 11th). For the first four weeks, you will learn and share your knowledge with your teammates. Then, for the last four weeks, you will create your own manipulation. Your manipulation is NOT a collaboration, but you ARE allowed to ask for help, feedback, and advice from your teammates.

When first stumbling upon deviantArt, whether 5 months or 5 years ago, we decided to join because we wanted to share our art. We wanted our work to be seen, to be appreciated, to be understood. However, it can be a long and difficult journey from obscurity into the spotlight. Many newcomers and even long-time deviants are sometimes overwhelmed and discouraged by a seeming lack of interest and/or exposure for their work. After all, that's what dA is for, right? Not necessarily - the answer to that question is a bit more involved than a simple "yes" or "no".
Society in general has become used to instant gratification. Want the new album by your favorite artist? With the click of a mouse, you've got it! Need to get in touch with your cousin who's moved to Italy? It's easy -- just Skype! The college you want to attend is across the country? No problem, they offer online courses!
You may be wondering how this is relevant to dA. Well,

Current dA submissions guidelines define "Fantasy Photomanipulation" as photomanipulation that focuses on a fantasy theme. We have therefore set out to speak with our fantasy constituency and gain a better understanding of how they see and define the complexities of fantasy photomanipulation.
We all know of dragons, wizards, sorcerers, witches, griffins, magic, fairies, fauns, and all other mystical and magical beings. We learned of them through stories, art, movies, and games. The fantasy genre has become increasingly popular because of movies like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and games like "Dungeons & Dragons" and "World of Warcraft," not to forget fantasy wr

Hi everyone! It’s a pleasure, my name is Margarita Luna but I prefer to be named Yuriko. I’m 25 years old, I’m mexican and I am an illustrator. I’m working to be an art professor someday and to do art books as well. Painting and illustration are my biggest passions and I wish to dedicate my whole life to them.
You are a very successful artist, what do you believe are your most important features that made you pop out of the crowd?
Thanks, I still don’t consider myself successful, so it’s a little difficult to answer but imagining I could be, I c

"The creation of an inner universe, dream and depth"
Some comments from the judges:
"Very creative theme and title. I love how you chose to represent this theme. I also love all the details and different stocks you used: the snowflake, water splash, rainbow... These little things are very creative, and the way you made the whole thing (with the two sides) is very original. It's all so detailed and placed so perfectly and delicately.I love the swirls and water and lighting on the dark side, and the clouds, colors, flowers, and snowflakes on the dream side. This is just such a skilled piece."
"This piece just struck me as marvelous. The contrast between the two sides is amazing, and I love how she is gazing towards the dream side. I love all the different textures, color shades, and brushes used here. It is one of the best photo-manipulations I have ever seen. Really, gorgeous. Gorge
Ode to our Souls GIVEAWAY!! +2000 points!Aura's here againOde to our Souls GIVEAWAY!! +2000 points!3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
it's over, thank you for partiipating
Every good feeling deserves an ode, a dedication for how great they make us. This world is an "ocean of souls": we all meet, share our feelings and realize we all are connected in a way. Today I offer you to feel it in your own skin and be rewarded for that.
The main goal is to shake DeviantArt with good vibrations, so let's make it epic!! With all the problems around the world and the media scaring us with terrible words saying we are heading to a global catastrophe, it's time
When to Google, When to ForumOne of the coolest things about dA is it's not just for sharing art, it's for sharing ideas about art. If you're stuck on a piece, or you'd like to learn to how to do something that just hasn't been clicking in tutorials or class, the art-related forums are a great place to look! When to Google, When to Forum2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
But the best part about the forums is also the riskiest part: anyone can answer! Which means you'll get opinions which contradict each other, 'industry facts' from people who heard it elsewhere on the internet, people who don't quite understand your original question...it's a mess!
So how can you back up all that different advice, or alternately open with a question that won't be confusing?
Ignoring for a moment that I basically worship Google (hey, you try growing up with a 1000-page reference book as your only source of random facts), it's is an awesome, flexible tool.
Just drop your question into Google and see wh

what would i do without deviantART.
How to get more Popularity and PageviewsFame is something a lot of people want to get on dA.How to get more Popularity and Pageviews6 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Many people know this - you log in and have little to no new messages.
So you want to get known, want to get your pictures out there. Many pageviews tell you that many people have visited your site and have taken notice of you.
This is giving everyone a good feeling
So here are some suggestions to reach this goal:
In order to get you have to give. Browse through the categories you like the most, and pick the pictures you like and comment on them. Don't only comment on the most professional pictures, the artist is most likely too busy to answer them all. Your chance of getting noticed is bigger when you comment on the works of unpopular artists, as they are more likely reading and answering your comment.
Important: Don't spam. No one likes mediocre comments that could fit every picture. Most people will just ignore you then, plus you could get banned. And don't only comment on pictures, also com

How I (Finally) Got Good SkinI get lots of compliments on my skin in my photos. I got told yesterday on my latest set how nice it was. I won't ever deny it; I use photoshop to take out distracting blemishes, but for the most part, my skin is how you see it. I wanted to go into a bit more depth on how I got to this place. This journal may get a bit gross at times, just sayin'How I (Finally) Got Good Skin3 years ago in Personal More Like This
My skin was not always baby-smooth. Throughout my teenage years I had what is known as cystic acne. Life was depressing. I can't say which kind of acne is worse, all-over surface type, or one single giant zit-from-hell in the middle of your forehead. I had the second kind. I was extremely self-concious, and I wouldn't have dared to take stock photos had I not found a way to clear up my skin. Day-to-day, I took my stress out by picking at my skin. You can't see it in my photos now, but I do have some permanent damage from skin-picking. It's a reminder that self-harm is self-harm. You don't have to be taking a razorblade to you

CONTEST IS OPEN"IN THE EMBRACE OF WINTER"CONTEST IS OPEN2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Each season brings a different experiences and emotions, different atmosphere, a different colour pallette.
Winter is a time for reflection and rest, a cycle of life-death-rebirth,
the inward journey, embracing darkness and silence.
Winter days are short, with long nights. The cold weather can make us sad and lethargic.
The season offers a sense of calmness and makes us feel peaceful.
The most romantic time of the year?
A snowy, frosty, cold world or rain and endless grey skies can be beautiful
but some people find that they become seasonally depressed as they receive less light in winter.
People feel tired and sluggish during winter. Too cold, gloomy, depressing?
Do you feel the winter blues or you enjoy the season?
Go back to your memories and keep your focus on your experience and emotions.
Show us your feelings about winter.
Show us your winter mood...now, in your past or childhood.
