About my TMNT rantGot a long journal head of you. I tried to break it up a bit so you can skim parts.About my TMNT rant4 months ago in Personal More Like This
It appears some people were a little less than happy with the idea that I’m not going to see the new TMNT movie, yet have already formed a negative opinion about it. Some people, who don’t understand what the word means, are calling this “hypocritical” since I often ask that people try to see both sides of an issue, so taking a definitive stance here with (what appears to be to them) incomplete data is wrongheaded of me. So now I gotta write this journal to explain my actions better. Hope you’re happy ‘bout that...
It’s just a movie! Why does it matter?
Because it’s not JUST a movie. Movies do not exist in a vacuum. How well (or bad) a movie does informs YEARS of upcoming movies and careers. Thousands of people’s jobs are dictated on the whim of what the box office rankings are for opening weekend. A now famous example is Guillermo

Ya see, It’s always surprises me when someone says that I’m becoming too preachy, when in fact I’ve been preachy from the beginning. Don’t believe me? Take a look below!
This is not a complete list by any stretch of the imagination, but these are essentially THE MOST controversial comics and illustrations I’ve ever done in the past 10 years.

Not ALL BlankI started seeing the “not all ___” retort when it came to feminism. The response was “not ALL men,” usually as an argument to derail any discussion about how badly women are generally treated by the male gender. Since then, the phrase has started to apply to pretty much ANY sub culture/group. “Not ALL Bronies,” “Not ALL gamers,” “Not ALL comic artists” etc, etc. And most recently I saw it when I stated that I didn’t like 4chan because of how vile and vitriolic the website generally is. “Not ALL 4channers” is the gist of the argument. And I think this nonsense needs to stop. Not ALL Blank5 months ago in Personal More Like This
OF COURSE we know that “not all ____” is true. I don’t know anyone who actually believes that ALL men, ALL gamers, ALL 4channers, ALL bronies, etc are evil or bad. But guys... all those things have a reputation, and if that reputation is generally negative then you need to step up and correct it. And to

One Myth I Wish I Could Dispel"Feminism means you can't like sexy things"One Myth I Wish I Could Dispel1 year ago in Personal More Like This
After doing a series of comics standing up for women's rights, there's a lot of really negative rumors going on around me right now. Most of which point to the hypocrisy that I use to draw fetish artwork and that recently I made pin-ups that were "sexy" in nature. Because, of course, if you're an artist who stands up for women's rights from that moment on you're not allowed to EVER draw women in a way that might be construed as potentially "sexy," lest you be labeled a hypocrite.
As I've mentioned before in previous journals, I really can't stand this mentality the internet has of polarizing extremes. You've always gotta be in one extreme or you're in the other. There's never the possibility that you could be in the middle like, you know, a normal person would be.
I understand why that is: it's easier to point out fallacies and bitch and whine about people when they fit into nice neat black and white spec
Unfollow? PLZ?So yeah... if you support #GamerGate in any way, could you please unfollow me? After yet another women in gaming being driven out of their home from DOXXING and rape/death threats, and the fact neo-nazi's have joined the cause... I want absolutely NOTHING to do with this group. I don't care if it'll lose me watchers or views or whatever, or if I don't completely "understand their cause!" I don't care now. There is no turning back for me. Please do not follow me if you support this clear hate group.Unfollow? PLZ?2 months ago in Personal More Like This
Likewise, if you don't support women's rights or the LGBTA movement, please either unfollow me or just don't comment or respond to anything I post from now on, ok? I don't want that anti-progressive hate filled stuff here either.
OK, thanks, bye.

The best way to improve is to learn as much as possible from the old mistakes. I have to paint and I will learn from the mistakes. No textbook or instruction video will improve my skills If I don't paint.

Family Guy + Rape Culture, Digital Animal AbuseIn my last journal I apparently touched a few people off by saying that I didn’t like rape jokes in Family Guy, and that I was upset that a digital mutant lizard was killed in the trailer for Mad Max. There were a number of people who didn’t find those things to be offensive and couldn’t seem to understand why I personally would get so upset. “Family Guy has ALWAYS had rape jokes” or “It’s not even a real animal” being the typical response. So let’s try to address this stuff...Family Guy + Rape Culture, Digital Animal Abuse5 months ago in Personal More Like This
Family Guy and Rape Culture
Before we begin we need to set some definitions so that we’re all on the same page.
Rape culture is a phrase used to describe a culture in which rape is pervasive and normalized due to societal attitudes about gender, sex, and sexuality. Examples of behaviors commonly associated with rape culture include victim blaming, sexual objectification, trivializing rape, denial of widespread rape, or

I watched the first episode and I won’t spoil anything for you here. Suffice to say it was a little more lackluster than I anticipated it would be for a season starting episode. I understand they’re setting up a LOT of stuff (with the 3 year time jump), but overall I felt kinda blah about this episode. I hope it gets better. I think the next episode is going to examine what happened to Korra during those 3 years and that sounds like it’s gonna be awesome. So here’s hoping!
DC Apologizes for Offensive T-Shirts
This little news story broke out over the week. DC unveiled 2 new official t-shirts. The first depicted Superman kissing Wonder Woman with the title “SCORE!” over his head. The other was a Batman shirt that read “Training to be Batman’s Wife.” I have less issue with the batman shirt than I do the Wonder Woman shirt, because it’s pretty indicative of wh

An alien rift opens up in the pacific ocean and giant monsters start pouring out. After failing to stop them with our usual tanks and planes, the world unites to make giant mech robots punch the monsters to death. Because the robots are so big and complex, controlling them alone is too intense for a single human brain to comprehend. So mech robots are piloted by two crew members who mind meld with each other to share the power load. The better in-synch the pilots are with each other, the better the robots perform. The movie follows the events as monster outbreaks increase and a last ditch effort to close the portal is put into motion.
There is a LOT to get through in the movie in terms of world building. Sometimes so much so that you don't get a chance to absorb it all in. Likewise, since there's so much going on the characters don't get very developed either. Outside the 3 main characters, the rest of the characters are simplified ste

Yes, comments are disabled on her YouTube video. But honestly, why does everyone see this as a "problem?" I know it's common wisdom to assume that if you hide comments you're "scared" of receiving criticism or some other bullshit, but think beyond that please.
1) Comments enabled would just allow hate speech and actual sexism to persist because the internet has already determined that everyone hates Anita. No matter how thoughtful or constructive your criticisms might be, YouTube's 500 character limit isn't the best place to give it, plus it would be drowned out by the trolls and haters spewing negativity.
2) Her videos are also meant more as a teaching tool, not a vlog series, and as such are potentially going to be used in classrooms. Probably a good idea to keep nasty comments of homophobia, racism, sexism, etc off of the main source of the video. I think that's backed up beautifully by having her tell parents to preview the

The Downside to Internet Fame
This has been a topic on my mind a lot lately, especially over the recent Phil Fish controversy. In a lot of ways I find myself in the same shoes as Phil. My “reputation” online is not a very good one, and it often precedes me. No matter what website I go to, if I make an account and comment anywhere on the internet... those that dislike me will find me and make their presence known.
Part of the problem with being “famous” on the internet is that if you want to have a semblance of a normal life again, you essentially have to give up EVERYTHING that everyone else online takes for granted. I essentially have to give up twitter, Facebook, tumblr, DA, Pinterest, SA, YouTube, and pretty much any other website where I’m allowed to have a presence.
If I comment on someone else’s art, I risk bringi

I’m sorry that the last journal seemed to upset so many people. It was meant as a cleansing of views and people around me that might introduce toxicity in my life. But I can totally understand how some people took it very personally, or felt that I worded it poorly. You are absolutely right, and for that transgression I am sorry.
With that in mind, I felt it might be a good idea to just give a refresher course on important personal rules, opinions, or views I have so that we’re ALL on the same playing field on where/what/who I stand for. So this is going to be a very BLUNT and DRY list of stuff about me and my opinions. I hope that it helps clear any confusions and I will be happy to elaborate on anything if you ask me in the comments section.

Quick Tips: On Referencing AnatomyReference from real life whenever possible.Quick Tips: On Referencing Anatomy3 years ago in Personal More Like This
When you reference or copy from another artist's studies/sketches/art, you may be copying their mistakes as well. Furthermore, an artist's studies are their notes and --just like with history or chemistry notes-- copying someone else's notes will not help you fully understand the material. To completely understand anatomy, you must take your own notes and build your own understanding through observation.
This is probably a no-brainer for many artists but... scruffynerfherder and I were talking about this last night, and with the increase of "anatomy studies" showing up on dA's front page, it's been on my mind. DA's resource category has some great material, but I also feel like there is a lot of misleading information taught by amateurs who really probably shouldn't be teaching things like shading or anatomy, because they have a less-than-stellar grasp on it themselves. I'm not trying to knock anyone here, but it's a bit tr

The human face, usually that of one’s mother, is the first visual connection a new human being has with the world. That face is the world. Psychologists tell us that the greater percentage of what we communicate with each other in any conversation is transmitted and received through our reading of each other’s facial expressions during our chat – and more often than not, we trust the truth to be what we read in another’s face, this truth being as often as not contrary to the words being spoken.
Crazy Horse had no fear of leading his warriors against Custer’s guns at the Little Big Horn, but he wouldn’t let his picture be taken on his deathbed, lest his soul be captured in the photograph. For Crazy Horse it may indeed have been more than the mere chronicling of the death of a particular moment in time that was captured. Maybe it’s because of our unique evolutionary trajectory (w

So we have a budget that needs to get passed every year to keep things running. The president gives the budget to Congress and Congress approves of it. Except that Congress is so inefficient at getting things done, they often wait too long to pass the budget by the deadline. So generally what happens is they pass an extension to take care of it later, which shouldn't be a big deal. But this year Republicans added an addendum to the extension saying they wanted to bump Obamacare till next year, and squabbling ensued.
Now Obamacare has already passed into Law. It's even been upheld by the Supreme Court. There is nothing Republ
