Entrenched by BrookMJust as the first wave disembarked from their transports and launched their selves into the enemy the second wave rolled across no-man's land, in the form of three dozen Centaur carriers whom brought forth heavily armoured Grenadiers tasked with taking out enemy strong points and bunkers.
The enemy trenches might be cleared of the enemy with some ease now, but the remaining bunkers would be a tougher challenge for the regular infantry lacking the equipment for such a thing. As the Centaurs closed in on the fray they could see that a Gorgon was turned into a blazing inferno as a lucky lascannon shot punctured the fuel tanks of one of the sponson- mounted flamers, which in turn reached the main fuel tanks.
The Centaurs slew to a halt, the small squads of grenadiers jumping free and into the cover of the enemy trenches as quickly as they could under the heavy weight of their equipment and armour. From there onwards they followed the trail of dead, shoving their selves to the fr

Hey, check this out, Rose said the next morning. She was holding the newspaper that she had stolen from outside.
Read it to us, I said as I picked up the wrappers we had left from breakfast.
Okay. Two bodies have been found in the tri-state area yesterday, both with terrible wounds on their necks. One was found in a nightclub north of Blackstone, and the other was found in an alley in Blackstone itself. Both of the bodies were male and both were between the ages of sixteen and nineteen. The first body had been stowed under a bed in a secret room, drained completely of blood. The second had a gaping bite wound that seemed to come from an animal while lying in a pool of his own blood, a broken switchblade in his hand. It also says that the police dont want to release the names of the guys Rose looked up at me, as did Dolan, who was strumming a guitar.
Huh, I wonder what happened to them, I said sarcastic
Wrestling and WrappingSusan smiled, getting into her sweat shorts and orange tank top, eager to begin what she wanted to do for a long time. A new sport had come out a year or two ago that involved wrestling with, and wearing down, large constrictor snakes. The smallest allowed were boa constrictors, but there was no such thing as 'too big' so far in wrestling matches. Susan had tried to get into the sport professionally, but the pigs in charge said that she had a limitation. She was too light to wrestle. Weight minimum for the pro's was 130 pounds. Susan was 114. Perhaps the first time a woman wanted to be heavier! Susan planned to show them though. She had been asked by a friend to babysit a certain Burmese python pet while her friend was out of town. Susan was only too happy to agree, having a plan in mind.Wrestling and Wrapping6 years ago in Science Fiction More Like This
"Okay Brutus, ready for wrestling?" the busty late teen asked, flicking some of her black hair behind her ear. Brutus was a very large and heavy Burmese python, weighing 238 pounds and was 23 feet lon

The next day, the nurse brought more food, two old backpacks, and a newspaper. Maybe she knew that we were homeless mutants on the run from the D.N.A. Labs ha, right. But she did probably know that we didnt have a home by the fact that we were all covered in dirt and scars.
We all were taking turns in the bathroom to clean ourselves up by showering and brushing our teeth (trust me, Logans got some serious bad breath issues, so it was a good thing). We also took our clothes and let them soak in the sink while we showered it was like doing laundry, I guess. While I was waiting for my turn, I grabbed the newspaper and started to gain information about where we were.
The date was Friday, July 22nd, 2011. The story of the nine missing kids was on the front page. The weather update said itd be hot for the rest of the week.
The Talent Show was on the 27th of July, so wed have to wait five more days. After we did our talents in front of a bunch of h

Morning, guys! I shouted and clapped my hands. Get up! No one moved. Kara suppressed a giggle and Logan gave a few fake snores. Really? You dont want to get up? I walked over to the guitars and amp. Carefully, I plugged in Rafes red guitar and turned up the volume. I cleared my throat before throwing my fingers across the strings, creating a sharp, inharmonic disorder that made everyone in the room jolt into a sitting position. Great, now youre all awake.
Eryn! Roxy groaned and lay back down.
Five more minutes Logan muttered and closed his eyes.
Kara was technically upright as she rubbed her eye with one hand. On the other side of the room, Rose was getting to her feet and staring around the room with puzzlement. Rafe was wide awake, his brown wings out and cooling off in the chilly air of the garage. Near him, on the mattress, was Dolan with his hands over his ears.

Its all your fault, Rafe snapped at Dolan as I helped him place his right arm into a makeshift sling made of one of the hospitals towels.
My fault?! Dolan barked as Rose gently placed her hands on his chest. Youre the one who asked for it!
When did I ever ask you to break my arm?!
Right after you snapped a few of my ribs!
Shut up! I yelled at both of them. Look, its over! Deal with it! Looking up at Rose, I asked, How many of his ribs are broken?
Three, she calmly replied. We had cleaned up all the blood, so she wasnt tempted anymore. There are two broken ones on Dolans right side, and one on his left. Both of them are towards the bottom of his ribcage. Looking down at Dolan, she said, Youre lucky that none of your ribs punctured your lungs.
You mean Rafes lucky he didnt punct

The amphitheater was so very huge for such a small town.
It was odd to walk down the hill to get behind stage when everyone was staring at us. Both teenagers and adults pointed at us and whispered behind their hands. Were the curious or did they feel confused by our sudden appearance?
We ignored them all and helped each other out; Rose carefully pushed the amp on its wheels down the hill, I carried Dolans guitar for him, and Logan held some magic equipment (homemade, of course). Eryn? Kara whispered.
Theyre all looking at us funny
I know, sweetie. They just dont know us.
I tucked my wings closer to my body and looked over the group, making sure that their abnormalities couldnt be seen, either. Dolan, Roxy, and Kara had their glasses on, Logan and Rose had their mouths closed, Roxy kept her tail down the back of her leg, and Rafe and I wore the leather jackets to keep our wings hidden.

Ooh, Eryn! I want one of those, too! Kara exclaimed, pointing to a pink, stuffed teddy bear high on a shelf in the shooting gallerys prize vault. Please, Eryn, please?
Dolan? Do you mind? I asked my wolf friend.
Not at all, he grinned and handed over the three-foot-long stuffed boa constrictor to Logan, who almost dropped his cotton candy while tilting the snakes head, studying it carefully. I walked up to the counter, handed over two dollars, and stood back to watch Dolan shoot down the targets.
Well, I should tell you how the Talent Show results turned out. Rose and Logan obviously won first place for their amazing magic show. I received second place, Dolan and Rafe got third, and Roxy and Kara placed fifth. That means we had a good 1,540 dollars to spend at a lovely carnival that was taking place right before the dance.
Of course, being the teenagers and young child that we are, we spent 35 of those

A scream echoed off the white walls, the tinted windows, and the expensive equipment. I glanced up at the bars in front of me, a blank look in my eyes. Across the hall, my friend Dolan sat in his own cage, his eyes as vacant as mine. My chains around my wrists and ankles clanged against the floor, not desperately, but uncomfortably, maybe even from loneliness. I curled my body tighter, wrapping my arms around my knees, trying to hold myself together. My wings folded tightly, attempting to stay hidden behind my body. Another one was coming. They would either join us...or join the dead.
Three men in white lab coats came down the narrow corridor, their shoes pounding loudly on the concrete floor. The two that were in the lead held clipboards in their hands. Their mouths whispered meaningless words about the new test subject. The third man held a girl by her long, brown hair and dragged her down the hall. The girl was screaming, pleading

Mmm I mumbled in slight pain. My wings were open under me, covering the ground like a white shroud. I felt as though someone had thrown a cinder block onto my stomach. The pressure felt so real that I stretched my hands to move whatever it was.
Instead of hitting cement, I hit something soft, warm, and moving.
My eyes flew open, only to see one of Dolans hands pressing down onto my stomach. My fingers had landed on his arm, causing him to ease up on my abdomen. What are you doing?! I asked him. His eyes calmly found mine. He moved his hand, the burnt one, so that I could see it There was bright red blood on his skin. My blood. Ow! What happened?!

The voice came from a megaphone that was held in front of a large, burly mans mouth, mostly obscuring his face. The accent was strange to Louis, it was one that was, even in these open days, heard quite rarely this side of the Atlantic Ocean. Louis could not contain his smirk as the man began to speak. He was very fond of Americans, but they did often puff out their chests with each statement that they made, making themselves appear the bigger men in any situation.
This man was stood to the right of a large set of double doors which led into a room not made of the same portable divisions as the rest of the exhibition and this room was not much wider than the doors themselves. The fact that the walls seemed to be made of some sort of dull metal actually drew more attention from the Count. The man was standing beside a wooden box which strangely also caught Louis attention but he shook it off, focussing

What exactly are the Captains plans for this anyway? We run a frigate ship, how the hell does he expect us to go toe-to-toe with a Destroyer-class ship from the German Navy!?
Were not fighters; were privateers! Thats what those military bastards wanna call us anyway How could the Captain do this to us!?
The mess hall was a relatively small room on the lower deck of the gondola section of the airship, small enough that not all of the crew could gather there at the same time, but it made for some cosy conversations at least. The crew were clearly not happy, their anger fuelled by alcohol which they had managed to lift on the last mission and had forgotten to mention when logging the loot which they would be keeping in the report to the Royal Navy. The Count had given them free reign over it for tonight so long as the next day they were fit
Flight of the Valkyrie 4The noise outside the doors was astronomical. The Admiral had merely been carrying out some routine paperwork, finishing his more tedious assignments for the day before he oversaw the new arms shipment. Today was supposed to be a relatively leisurely day in a relatively tedious time for the seasoned veteran. The noise that was steadily moving closer to his door suggested that this was in jeopardy.Flight of the Valkyrie 47 years ago in Science Fiction More Like This
The Admiral considered reaching for his ceremonial sabre mounted on the wall behind his desk, but thought better of it. Instead he poured himself a large scotch from the crystal decanter on his desk and waited patiently for whoever or whatever was approaching to arrive. The steam-powered doors were almost torn from their hinges as Count Louis de Theudubert entered, his face screwed into a look of pure anger, possibly hatred but definitely a full amount of pain. In the doorway behind him stood several members of his so-called crew and in small snippets of the hallway which could be

It was another ordinary day in the valley. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and sleepy head Fred had "accidently" fallen asleep during his shift again. Fred is a containment engineer at GeneCorp; A privately owned experimental genetics company. In short he showed up, "watched the containment monitors" to make sure no "products" got loose, and went home after a few of hours.
Fred however had a tendency of falling asleep mid-shift; hence the nick-name sleepy head Fred and today seemed particularly good for napping. He had already been caught two times this past month. "But what the hell?" He thought, "What would five minutes hurt?"
Sitting back in the chair, Fred lowered his baseball cap to cover his eyes, turned on his mp3 player, set his feet up on the metal covered section of the control panel, and was out in five seconds flat. As Fred drifted into dreamland his feet drifted to a large red button labeled "emergency dump". It would be another 15 minutes

The sky above winked down at him with a thousand eyes, each glinting star seeming to judge his actions, but he ignored this. No-one could see that what he was doing was for the sake of the country. Darmania would go to war with Great Britain, it was only a matter of time and the Empire would indeed fall. There was no doubt in his mind, not with the things he had seen and heard. Germany was sending supplies into Darmania, the ores that were not available for the keen weapon smiths to use in creating their monstrosities of war, which they then shared with the Germans.
He had first come to parley in hopes of gaining a truce or even an alliance with Darmania, but that had fallen away rapidly and he had been given two choices: aid them and join the empire that would arise from Darmania and Germanys conques
Flight of the Valkyrie 3Count Louis de Theudubert, Captain of the HMS Valkyrie, well documented pacifist, had taken a life.Flight of the Valkyrie 38 years ago in Science Fiction More Like This
The Count was stood at the helm of the Valkyrie, his eyes locked on the windows but his mind taking his vision elsewhere. Too many thoughts were going through his head at the same time. Within his mind he was simultaneously drinking the highest quality English tea with his family around a table and also opening the envelope which contained their ransom note he had received almost one year ago. But what was worse was that on top of these memories, he also was continually reliving his recent actions; plunging his blade into the German Commodores neck, cutting through the trachea and, almost mercifully, severing his spinal column as well.
Upon returning to their vessel, the crew of the Valkyrie had left the heavily damaged German Destroyer adrift. The surviving crew were locked inside the pens which had formerly held their prisoners, eventually to be found by a search party or perhaps
Flight of the Valkyrie 10Smoke was pouring into the central chamber, causing Louis to cough and splutter. The Telescopic Diagnostician whirred, attempting to get a lock on any object but unable to do so due to the thick black cloud. The Count crouched down and covered his lower face with a handkerchief, raising his new pistol as he attempted to gauge the situation. Something had gone horribly wrong, this much was clear, but had it been sabotage or was it merely the malfunction which the staff would later attempt to ensure they all believed.Flight of the Valkyrie 107 years ago in Science Fiction More Like This
Captain! Davenports voice was muffled, but loud enough that Louis was able to turn in his direction. We need to get out of here!
Of course, his breathing apparatus would make this a lot easier for the Lieutenant. Louis rerouted two wires on his analogue computer and the Telescopic Diagnostician suddenly focussed to the Counts left, indicating a thin area where the smoke seemed less dense. He had programmed the device to search for light,

Which is different than the norm how? Louis asked with a mischievous glint in his eye. Celeste smiled and punched him in the arm, shaking her head.
Ye dont change do ye? She asked, her feet lowering to the floor as she dropped down from where she was sat. Louis eyes were drawn away from her eyes by the bouncing of her medal (among other things) close to his face.

Louis guard had been thrown off by his opponents harsh returning slash and he now forced himself to hop to his right to avoid the thrust of a blade into his stomach. As he landed, his right knee failed him again and he cried out in pain, dropping onto his left knee as his body responded to the pain.
The Counts opponent did not let up, slashing her blade towards his neck fast enough that he had no time to bring up his own blade to stop it. Instead he rolled in the same direc

What are we going to do? Rose asked, her voice shaky and scared. It finally clicked in my brain that Dolan was sick; that Dolan might die. Neither Rose nor I had seen Dolan weak like this for several years. The very first year I was at the D.N.A. Labs, I remember my wolf friend completely sick. The scientists had jabbed needles into him to see if he was immune to any diseases. He got extremely sickly and unhealthy, and the chance of dying was high for him.
Eryn Rose I remember Dolan saying. I wont die. I promise.
But Dolan, Rose had said. Youre really sick
We want you to pull through and everything, but I had said.
No buts. As long as you two are still here, I will never die. I remember him smiling; a quick, rare one that took my breath away, even though he looked ashen and nauseated.
Now he was dying again and I had no idea what to do.
Flight of the Valkyrie 9The wood was smooth beneath his hand, crafted well and finished just as skilfully. Louis sat down and allowed several members of his crew to fill seven of the sixteen seats that this car could hold. Bjorn Hauptmann sat opposite the Count, with Charles Davenport at his side.
