This is part two of a basic Custom My Little Pony Tutorial!

I do things a little differently, so this may help some people.

This tutorial covers how to re-hair the tail.

Questions are welcome and encouraged! :D

These tutorials WILL NOT cover how to re-hair the mane, dye the body, or style the hair. You'll need to find someone else for that ^^;

The first of my promised tutorials: preparing the bait. This is how I take a store bought pony and turn it into a blank canvas, ready for sculpting, painting, or whatever else I plan to do with it. Other tutorials will be posted when I have time, but finishing ponies for the show takes precedent. If you want a tutorial on a specific aspect of customizing, please ask! I'll be hitting the major points (Bait prep, full body repaint, symbol painting, eye painting, rehairing), but anything else will only be posted if requested. Enjoy!

This tutorial covers how to prep a pony for customization, I haven't finished the ones that cover how to start creating.

I will create and upload one on how to re-hair the tail, paint and sculpt. (these coming later)

The third of my promised tutorials: how to rehair a pony. This is how I finish a pony that will have hair, specifically using nylon pony hair. There are also rehairing tools you can use, but this way is cheap, easy, and versatile. You can use pretty much anything to hair a pony, but if you'd like to use the stuff I did here (and use on most my ponies), you can buy it from the same place I do here: [link]

Second Note: I use acrylic paint for this tutorial and all my ponies.

The second of my promised tutorials: how to do a full body repaint. This is how I take an already prepared pony bait and make it the color I want to work with. Quite honestly I find a full body repaint a bit of a hassle, but since Hasbro only makes certain colors of ponies it is a necessary thing. You can also dye a pony to make it a different color, but I don't know how to do that. Here's a good tutorial for dying if you're interested. [link]

The fifth of my MLP customization tutorials: how to paint pony symbols. This is the main way I paint most of my symbols, with varying levels of shading and highlighting. I don't always if I'm using a style that calls for something else (see my art style series of ponies for examples) but this way is fairly standard. Feel free to play around with it to make it your own. When in doubt though, outline. Outlines make symbols pop and look very clean.

The fourth of my MLP customization tutorials: how to paint pony eyes. This really is more of a general guideline/just to get you started tutorial since there are a million different styles to paint a pony eye in and this is just one. The main points about outlining, shading, glare shapes and shape layering will be helpful for most eyes you do with a little tweaking, though.

FIRST OF ALL, this is an old tutorial I wrote on my old account but didn't really get a lot of attention due to the heavy (almost 12MB) file pack it came in. However, since showing it to some friends and getting positive response I decided to reupload it here without the extra bits, as well as on my sketch account. It has a lot of information in it I'm sure would help a lot of people and would prevent me from having to repeat myself, so by all means take a look at it if you feel you could use it.

SECOND OF ALL, because it's so old, it has a lot of spelling errors and sometimes vague explanations in it. Forgive me for that, but I don't have the time or the motivation to take all this and make it into a new one. I've learned a lot since then xD

LASTLY, if you have any questions regarding things written in the tutorial, make sure to ask them, be it by comment or note. I want to help people by giving them the information I wish I had when I started out.

INDEX:

:bulletpink: Opencanvas or Photoshop? - the differences between them. Opencanvas' brushes are comparable to those of SAI, I just didn't know the program yet back then.
:bulletyellow: From sketch to finished inks - a basic start on picking the right brush continued in the next part.
:bulletorange: Getting your lines smooth - tips and tricks on getting flowing lines and the linearting in general.
:bulletgreen: The basics of lineweight - A short guide on how I do mine, where to use it and why.
:bulletblue: Colouring your lineart - IMPORTANT detail: this part features how to lock your lineart and seperate it from a white background.
:bulletpurple: Adding effects - how to give your lineart a blurry effect and how to add a bold outline, both made for photoshop though.
:bulletblack: (ngh no dark blue) Tricks for mouse users - IMPORTANT detail: how to get lineweight and smooth lines with a mouse or without pen pressure. It still takes a trained hands to get steady lines though. try combining this with the short stroke/edit with eraser trick from :bulletorange:

That shall be all.
