War In SchoolWar In School6 years ago in Free Verse More Like This
Battleground bullies and lonely kids
100 years ago we were throwing sticks and stones
Now it's guns and bombs that break our bones
What are we doing?
What have we done?
There's the claim that nothing can be done
Staring blindly at the devastation unfolding
Where we are is where we never should be
And we just turn away, we just turn to the wall.
Execution, murder and suicide
Every day another fight
Every year another shooting
What's this world we created
Where the kids fear school?
Drugs in the closet
Teachers dealing crack
Principles trading ignorance for dough
Weapons hidden from view
Ghosts around every corner
Turn around, two shots to the back
What's this we refuse to see?
Gun liberation turning our world upside down
Another shooting and blame the world but "oh not me"
Government at fault and guns still out on the streets
Parents mourning a six by six
College dreams becoming a living hell.
Colors paint a picture
Segregation and separation
Mixing pot shattered on the ground

Meaning to swipe us off our feet in a whirlwind of despair
But then, there are those little moments of sunshine
A breaking in the storm
Where life delivers to our doorstep the gift of hope.
Do I dare utter it
That it may be snatched away in a heartbeat?
What is this glimmer I cling to in a child's hands
That warms my soul with its gentle flames?
Do I dare speak its name?
Hope...oh beautiful hope...
Cracking the egg against wood and stone
What lays beneath her fragile shell?
Will she find the path she so fervently seeks
Or will she fall like the thousand dead on this site?
Wildly she thrashes, </i>urgently she thrashes!
Rebel soul and rebel mind
Will you ever let a ray of light pierce your darkness?
Child, what have they done to you
That you fear and fight every soul you meet?
</i>Grasp the whisper deep inside of you
Listen to the voice that screams for silence
And stay, just stay here for awhile
Rest and know you always have
