As I walked along the dirt path with my comrade Fosuke, we both realized the lake was strangely quiet. Normally it is filled with visitors and other travelers, but this day it was not. Deciding we should find out what’s wrong, we approach the boathouse near the lake. *knocks on door* “DON’T COME IN!” the man said. “Why so? Is there a problem?” said I. “GO AWAY IT’S TOO DANGEROUS!” “Sir I am a Dark Mage and

When Tom Hobbs, the Unlikely’s Steward, knocked on their cabin door to inform the girls that the stronghold belonging to Dis Blak had been sighted, they all breathed a sigh of relief. They had been in the Boundless Blue for over two weeks and the voyage had been, for the most part, exceedingly dull.
The encounter with the ginormous elemental pocket from the Quasielemental Plane of Lightning on their first day out from Signpost had been a very dramatic introduction (if somewhat frightening for a certain faerie) to what could possibly be found in the Plane of Air. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the highlight of the outbound trip. For days afterwards there was nothing but endless sky and clouds, broken up now and then with bouts of bad weather. No air elementals breezed by, no djinn came a-calling, no monsters needing to be valiantly fought off as they attacked the ship. They saw birds on a few occasions, and another

The landscape was grey. Bleakly and dismally grey in all directions. The sky was grey and overcast, the dirt was an unpleasant brownish grey, the rocks were different shades of grey, the leaves and creepers on the trees were greenish grey, and of course the trees themselves were grey. Even the insects were grey. It was one of the most miserable places Garadun had ever seen. All right, the Blood Marsh around the gate town of Torch was far more dangerous, but here it was utterly depressing. The kind of depression that oozes right down into your soul – and sits there and festers.
But the job was the job, even if it sometimes sucked.
Shilling miaowed from where she sat comfortably in his coat pocket, and Garadun instantly felt somewhat better. All cats, especially delightful kittens, always improved his mood. And she wasn’t just any kitten. She was celestial and her inherent nature was a counterbalance to the pall

Helm, Free Worlds League
1 October 3040
With shore leave over and Garadun’s match in the Factory behind them, Cera and Sayuki regretfully (and with no small amount of tears) said farewell to their families and the Fighting Fusiliers lifted off Solaris VII on the twenty-third of September. It took them a little over five days to reach the jump point where Distant Memory was waiting for them, and they were welcomed aboard by the crew.
Everyone was given a half-hour to settle in and relax, and then Captain Hamilton gave the order for Distant Memory to jump out of the system and begin her long journey to Gambilon. The ship arrived safely at Amity, less than thirty light-years away. They had crossed the Lyran Commonwealth border and entered Free Worlds League territory. As they were a foreign vessel, Alexandra had of course submitted a flight plan with the League government, but Captain Hamilton didn’t bother to inform the Ami

Solaris VII, Lyran Commonwealth

The Factory was an abandoned industrial complex that had been converted into a combat arena. There was general seating for up to thirty thousand people, which made the place very crowded and uncomfortable when full. The audience watched the matches on huge, high resolution holoscreens. The box seats could handle a further six thousand spectators who watched the Games on closed-circuit holovid, enjoying the privacy and comfort the boxes provided. Compared to other Solaris arenas the facilities were limited, but this hadn’t diminished the Factory’s popularity with the fans. Most nights the place was packed and the owner, Free World Industries, was always making improvements.
Garadun sat in his cockpit, trying to relax and deal with his pre-fight nerves. He hadn’t been in the Games for over three years, but it was coming back. It helped that the Factory was his favourite venue.

The garrison contract between Lady Adele Jansen, Countess of Gambilon, and Baroness Alexandra Grosvenor’s Fighting Fusiliers mercenary company, was worked out that night in Alexandra’s Suite and then ratified the following day by ComStar at the Hiring Hall. It was very straightforward. The Fusiliers were to protect Gambilon from all raiders for a period of one standard year, starting the day they touched down on the planet, with an option to renew.
Alexandra had negotiated sixty-five percent straight support for general maintenance, and fifteen percent for battle loss compensation. There was enough to cover everyone’s salaries plus a little bit extra, but that was all. Countess Jansen was the ruler of Gambilon and suitably wealthy because of the lands she owned – but she wasn’t nearly as rich as Duke Josef Sheridan who’d also had public funds to draw upon. Gambi

Colonel Jaime Wolf looked up as the door to the conference room opened with a bang, and everyone at the table watched as Colonel Natasha Kerensky crossed the floor to stand by her commander. Despite her sixty-seven years of age the leader of the infamous Black Widow Battalion was still beautiful, with an athletic and shapely figure which was clad in her trademark black leathers. A laser pistol was holstered on her curvaceous hip and there was a holodisk in her hand.
“Clear the room,” Natasha ordered.
“Colonel Kerensky, we’re in the middle of important business,” said Jaime, glancing at the assembled regimental and battalion commanders.
“Whatever the hell it is, it can bloody well wait,” said Natasha, almost growling. “Everybody clear the damn room, and I mean now.”
Jaime Wolf looked at his old friend in surpr

The conference room aboard Shearling wasn’t as luxuriously appointed as the one on Distant Memory, nor were its holosystems nearly as advanced, but it was still a far cry above most everything else found in the Inner Sphere. Alexandra’s late father had wanted only the best for his new DropShip, and money had seen that he got it. Top quality technology was always available for those who could afford it, and the late Baron Grosvenor had been a firm believer in you get what you pay for.
Alexandra shared her father’s values, which explained why she spared no expense when it came to supplying her Fusiliers with everything they needed: from plenty of spares and ammunition for their BattleMechs to comfort items like a new blouse or a copy of the latest holodrama. In return, her people gave her their complete devotion and loyalty, not to mention friendship and love.

The excitement aboard Distant Memory and Shearling was so thick you could taste it. Six weeks had passed since the fateful encounter with the Wanderers and they had finally, at long last, arrived at their destination. After three tedious months in deep space it came as a great relief to everyone. Among the Fighting Fusiliers, two more birthdays had been celebrated: Cera’s on the eleventh of October and Jimmy’s on the fourth of November. She was now twenty-four standard years old; he’d turned twenty-nine. There had been the usual parties with cakes and presents, many of the latter having been acquired from the Wanderers. Everyone had a great time on both occasions. For Cera, perhaps her best present had been Marie (before they’d made passionate love that night) telling her that she was hopelessly in love with her. Not simply friends and lovers, but gen

Laurewen came downstairs into the kitchen the following morning to find, as was so often the case, breakfast laid out on the table. Shilling looked up from where she was drinking from her bowl, miaowed in greeting, and then resumed lapping up her milk. Garadun was at the stove flipping pancakes.
"There's some scrambled eggs and toast for you," he said, glancing over his shoulder. "As well as bacon. Cera's pancakes are almost ready."
"All this, and after the night we had." Laurewen sat down with a sigh. "You really don't have to go to all the trouble, you know."
Garadun shrugged and went to the pantry to fetch maple syrup. He put it on the table and poured Laurewen a tall glass of orange juice. What he'd prepared for her was her favourite breakfast; the coconut pancakes were Ceraline's.
"You okay, love?" she asked in concern.
Laurewen could see he did

CATS AND RIVERS
There was no rush the following morning to be off at the crack of dawn. Garadun knew his friends more than well enough to know they weren't exactly early risers, especially Ceraline. He was the first up though, and he woke Thorik before heading downstairs to prepare breakfast. Even Shilling kept snoozing until the smell of bacon became too much and she came padding into the kitchen and climbed up on a stool by the central counter, miaowing softly and sniffing. She got first helpings.
But since they were supposed to be beginning their march through the mountains, when breakfast was about halfway ready Garadun popped upstairs to knock on the girls' door and tell them to start getting up. With a guest in the house, a stranger as well, they made an effort to avoid their usual lazing around and procrastinating and got washed, dressed and downstairs to eat in record time.
Now fed and fully awake, Ceraline and Laurewen put on their co

Birds first thing in the morning. Noisy little buggers, they are. Poets wax on about the stupid things chirping and singing, but Garadun never liked them so damn early in the morning. It was never some soft, gentle song. No. It was as if every damn tweeter for a mile radius had cranked up their personal volume to max and let loose.
Even in Elysium they didn't cut him any slack. Bastards.
Wishing they'd all just sod off, Garadun sat up and rubbed his eyes and face. Shilling gave a huge yawn and looked blearily around from where she was curled up beside him. He stroked her a few times, then slid out from under his coat and walked over behind a tree to answer the call of nature. When he returned she hadn't moved, still only partially awake. He wandered down to the river and washed his face. The water was very cool and refreshing and woke him up completely.

CATS AND RIVERS
After a solid night's sleep Garadun got up the following day and discovered that Ceraline and Laurewen still weren't home. They'd gone to visit their friend Niobe, a pixie who lived in the woods outside the gate town of Sylvania. He'd been expecting them back the day before, but evidently the girls had decided to extend their stay.
He was sitting at his main table, pulling on some socks, when little Shilling stopped playing with the edge of the carpet, got an odd expression on her face (if someone thinks cats don't have expressions then they know nothing of cats) and then tramped off into the bathroom. He heard her cry once and she sounded lost. Wondering what was up, he followed her in after putting on his pants and found her in the shower stall, near the centre. She'd done her business on the marble floor.
"Oh," he said and gave a little sigh. Shilling mewed and rubbed herself against his leg. He picked her up and stroked her.

The cobblestone streets of the Impossible City were soaking wet, and small puddles here and there exploded in sudden, violent splashes when the tiefling's booted feet fell upon them as he charged through the Hive Ward. Unlike a great deal of the beings in the ward, which was the foulest and most dangerous in all of Sigil, the tiefling was not fleeing from anything. He was in fact in hot pursuit. Most citizens in the Cage would say you'd have to be barmy to willingly run into the Hive, but the job was the job.
And Garadun did the job. It was what he was paid to do.
The City of Doors doesn't have a lot in the way of what normal folks would consider wildlife. Everything it has comes from somewhere else, at least originally. What it's mostly got is vermin. Rats are everywhere, including the more dangerous cranium rats, rot grubs and cockroaches lurk in the heaps of garbage, mice roa

Chameleon House was located in Actual Alley, with a book repair shop on one side and the office of a sage on the other. The unique edifice looked like a narrow, three-storey building similar to a brownstone; with a side-gabled slate roof, light grey stone walls, narrow windows in weirwood frames and a densewood front door. In the middle of the door was a wrought iron chameleon head with a knocker below it.
Even in a city famous for an endless variety of architectural styles, Chameleon House was noteworthy. Not for its outward appearance but for what it was. It was in fact not a brownstone at all but a rare magical artefact known as a Daern’s instant fortress. When activated, it grew from a small adamantine cube into an impregnable structure some thirty feet tall. Additionally, it was unique among its kind because it was self-aware. Further, it could alter its exterior to match that of its surroundings. Here in Sigil

The cube sat on Garadun’s main table not far from several of his books, some of which were open. His personal library was enlarging all the time; it included texts on a wide variety of subjects. He firmly believed in the old adage that knowledge was power. More than that, knowledge meant survival. Ever since he’d first come to the City of Doors from Earth he’d been learning as much as he could to help him survive.
Shilling was also sitting on the table, occasionally poking at the little cube with her paw. It had been thoroughly washed and now gleamed in the light. After a very careful examination and consulting The Ultimate Book of Rocks, Minerals and Gems, Garadun had determined that the cube was made of carnelian, a semiprecious gemstone. It was also magical – his detect magic cantrip had confirmed it. Very strongly magical in fact.
Each side of the two-inch carnelian cube was engraved with a differe

Ratchet gazed out of his side-view mirror, concern cycling throughout his circuits. He and Ironhide were given a mission, a small one, by Optimus to scan the area for Decepticons that were rumored to be there. Ironhide and he required being in their alt modes, and Ironhide had insisted with his stubborn attitude that he would patrol the area, and that Ratchet should stay on watch. He had promised a safe return an hour after he left.
That was three hours ago.
Ratchet started his engine once more, idling in the deserted streets of an abandoned town. He was torn, pulled between remaining here in case the old rust-bucket had lost track of time, and going out in search for him for fear of something gone wrong. After trying to connect a comm. with him and receiving no response,
