Still Life Food Photography Contest
Still life photography usually involves a set up - planning and careful execution of a shot. Food photography in particular takes a lot of preparation and the time to make a dish or an item of food aesthetically pleasing. So I thought it was about time we had a contest involving all elements! Your challenge is to create a brand shiny new Still Life Photography piece that features Food. Now the catch is you must be creative with the food. Entries will be considered carefully and if you are taking photos of food that someone else has made, then you need to step up the mark and make it as unique as possible. If you made the creation yourself, give us a brief idea in the description of how. Utilize the descriptions of your artwork to tell us about your photography!
Start Date: Monday 14th May
End Date: Monday

Into the Realm
“Evening songs of burning wood and mead and laughter, of blood and hunts and fellowship: our halls echo with memories old and new. A day through forest and field, chasing the smell of spring, a moment above the morning mist to steal a glimpse of seas twinkling on the horizon; an eternity before our gates, in wonderment at the carved quests of heroes, coming alive at a fingertip’s request. Witness a lifetime into the realm… it is quite the adventure.”

Happy National Day of Silence!First of all, you may be wondering... Olivia, why the fuck aren't you in school?Happy National Day of Silence!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'll tell you why!
So I came to school in ripped blue skinny jeans, a Killjoys shirt, my hair sprayed, streaked blue and pink, and silver duck tape over my mouth. I also wrote BISEXUAL FOR 14 YEARS... MAYBE IT'S JUST A PHASE...
My friend, Reilly, she gave me blue duck tape so I wore that instead.
First period RAC class, I participated in class by writing on a white board.
Second period, in Art, my teacher told me it was against the rules to wear ducktape and I had to take it off.
He sent me to the principals office, so I left the room, and in the hallway, I got ducktape, taped a paper to my chest that said I GOT IN TROUBLE FOR WEARING DUCK TAPE.
A few people read it.
Anyways, in the principal's office, well, technically AP's office, he made me sit down and he talked to me.
I answered him, but mostly asked questions with just writing stuff down. I can't remember exactly wha

Today we are looking at the Literature gallery, with our Top Tips.
Before you start
READ the piece all the way through.
Read it again, making notes of what you would like to point out in your critique.
Stay Objective- you are critiquing the piece not the person.
These tips are areas which aren't just necessary in critiquing others' work, but also when self-critiquing your own writing. This is one person's suggestions and I welcome any further tips in addition.
A good opening. The opening to any form of writing doesn't necessarily need to involve a physical explosion, but it needs to have an initial hook; something to entice the reader in. It needs to be clear, something that
I Need To See My SonHello there, it's me again. By now, I am sure you already know what I am going to say, but I cannot just accept the fact that you all have seen it... not when I know you have friends and peoples that haven't. For those of you who have already purchased something from me, I thank you so very much. I couldn't do this without you. For those of you who couldn't purchase and have shared my story, I also thank you very much for getting the word out is just as important. You never know who you might reach.I Need To See My Son3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I miss my son. I miss him terribly. I'm sure some of you completely understand and there are those of you who may get the idea, but will never be able to fully understand it if you are not parents. There really are some things in life that one cannot understand simply because they have not experienced it. It's almost like missing your favorite stuffed animal that you have had for years that all the sudden disappeared. It leaves that hole in your heart that cannot be filled by anything else,

Quick Tips: On Referencing AnatomyReference from real life whenever possible.Quick Tips: On Referencing Anatomy4 years ago in Personal More Like This
When you reference or copy from another artist's studies/sketches/art, you may be copying their mistakes as well. Furthermore, an artist's studies are their notes and --just like with history or chemistry notes-- copying someone else's notes will not help you fully understand the material. To completely understand anatomy, you must take your own notes and build your own understanding through observation.
This is probably a no-brainer for many artists but... scruffynerfherder and I were talking about this last night, and with the increase of "anatomy studies" showing up on dA's front page, it's been on my mind. DA's resource category has some great material, but I also feel like there is a lot of misleading information taught by amateurs who really probably shouldn't be teaching things like shading or anatomy, because they have a less-than-stellar grasp on it themselves. I'm not trying to knock anyone here, but it's a bit tr

Yes, the original pages for Carciphona! The binder is pretty damn heavy so I will only be bringing pages from the Arenscura arc as photographed above. Up to page 50 of book 3 (or more if I finish more this week) are in there with crappy handwriting text, so you can spoil yourself and read on if you like (: If you're interested in seeing them, come and ask and I'll show you!
I most likely won't be taking commissions as I think I need to work on comic pages in order to play catch up, and my sketch commissions suck anyway. But I may change my mind if I realize that's being way too socially awkward penguiin of me orz
PE Architecture: PerspectivePE Architecture: Perspective3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Architecture Photography Basics: Perspective
Taking photographs is basically capturing a 3-dimensional space in two dimensions. The main principle governing this transformation is the principle of perspective, which represents the effect of a subject's space and depth in a 2-dimensional plane. The perspective effect in a photo is determined by the position it is taken from and the direction the camera is pointing. In other words, you can only change the perspective within an image by changing your standpoint.
'Godspeed' by Sigurd-Quast
Vanishing points play an important role in the portrayal of architectural forms. If parallel lines in 3-dimensional space extend into the distance, a photographic image will represent them as intersecting on a defined vanishing point. If you point your camera directly at the horizon, all vertical lines within the fram will actually appear vertical in your image. This is an

I think that anyone with at least "good" artistic skill, and a willingness to work hard, can find enough art job opportunities to stay busy and bring in some money. (However, there is a lot of competition, here on DA, AND out in the real world, so you have to be ready to put some effort into it.) This particular discussion deals with commissions (finding clients who need art and providing that art... as opposed to creating a body of work and then trying to sell it.)
The time, effort, and thought that you put into art makes it valuable to you. For art to have value to anyone else, it has to make someone think or feel something, or someone has to believe that it will benefit them in some way, or satisfy a need.
If you are going to be a successful artist you just have to produce art that will be valued as much (or more) by a client is it is valued by you, and then successfully sell it. this requires a lot of art skill, a lot of marketing skill, connections, luck, or some com

Playing With Instant FilmDarkroom WeekPlaying With Instant Film3 weeks ago in Art Features More Like This
I shoot instant film. Polaroid, to be specific. It's my vice. I shoot a lot of it, and it's an expensive addiction at about three dollars a frame but I do it anyway. And I'm not alone - we have many instant photographers on DA who are still using this most unique analog medium even though we could just take some digital shots and not have to refinance our houses to do it. We like instant film because of its immediacy, but also because of its purity - what spits out of the camera is what you get, flaws and all. It's hard to fake talent when you can't fix anything in post-process.
But you can, to an extent, manipulate instant film. Before we can start breaking it, though, we have to look at what it is. So we begin with:
Instant? Film? What?
Instant film spits out of the camera and makes a print, basically

deviantART has given me the opportunity to perform two Community Volunteer positions here:
I am the Science Fiction and Space Art Community Volunteer.
I am also now the new 3 Dimensional Art Community Volunteer.
One of the duties of these positions is that I can feature artwork from these categories as Daily Deviations.
I browse through these categories daily in search of deviations to feature as Daily Deviations.
This feature is to help the artist and their work gain more exposure, and it's genre and/or medium gains more community awareness as well.
But I need your help.
Have you seen a work of art here on deviantART which you have found so impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large?
Do you know an artist of whom deserves much more exposure?
Would you like to put a smile on someones face and make their
My Thoughts on ImprovementI get a lot of questions on how to go about improving your drawing ability. I never really know how to answer them since every artist I've met seems to grow better under different conditions. For example, my friend :icondana-t: has completed over one hundred sketchbooks in the past four years. I've completed four in the same amount of time, but our trends of improvement are (kinda) similar because we learn in different ways.My Thoughts on Improvement2 years ago in Personal More Like This
One of the reasons I never end up making a tutorial is basically because I don't think they work. Plenty of people will disagree with me on this, but that's my honest opinion. There might be a lot of opinions I type out here you'll disagree with, so keep in mind these are just my views. Here are my general thoughts on how to improve.
Stop thinking about style. Style is something you will develop gradually after you've spent years emulating other styles, talking with other artists, observing the world, and pinpointing what looks best to you. Ev
Save a fellow deviant and his motherHello fellow watchers, friends and whoever comes across this...Save a fellow deviant and his mother4 years ago in Personal More Like This
I just found out, that a fellow deviant, that I've been knowing for a bit now suffers from a lack of money. Yeah - we all suffer from a lack of money you will think but this is different...
The landlord of the appartment house they live in decided to throw out all his tenants. I don't know why but whoever doesn't own the money to move elsewhere will end up homeless.
Our fellow deviant and his mother are one of these souls. It's not that much for the deviant himself but for his mother who is in need of insulin 6 times a day. If they would end up homeless they couldn't even afford 1 shot a day let alone 6.
That is why wee need to gather people to donate to his moving fund. And if you aren't able to donate, then please please spread this story. All those big events like the Japan Crysis or the Tsunami cause sooo many people to donate to people they don't even know....but this is a guy we can get in touch with

When and How to EditLit Basics WeekWhen and How to Edit1 year ago in Literature Features More Like This
Earlier in the week I got into what editing is and how to love it. Now, let's talk about the entrée following this apéritif: when to edit, and how to do it. And, perhaps even more importantly, how to stop.
Stop, you say?!
Yeah, it's really not that hard to get caught up in this perfectionist funk where all you do is wind around in circles on the same piece. Curb it from the beginning by having an idea of where you want to end. What should the reader walk away thinking about? What should the reader walk away feeling? Do things move fast enough to be interesting?
I stop editing when I get to a point where all my edits are just minor wording tweaks. At that point I'll go back and forth, and I'm not even changing the overall impression the story creates. If it's not productive, it's not worthwhile.
Now that we've gotten dessert out of the way:
