Soul Drinkers and Imperial Guards! So today I received a treat in my facebook inbox from old colleague and now-kickass GW artist, Kevin "Kingmong" Chin: http://www.blacklibrary.com/Blog/Art_and_Soul.htmlSoul Drinkers and Imperial Guards!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Right now, I'm still awaiting a response from the Black Librarians to see if I am allowed to post some higher-res versions of my 3 Soul Drinkers covers here on DA. Till then, this is all they have up on their blog and all I have to show for, for now! For you Soul Drinkers fans out there, I was told not to reference any notable characters of the SD lore and come up with my own designs.
The general brief for the 3 covers was to have a tactical space marine, a captain, and lastly a dreadnought (being awoken). I thought it would be a neat idea to compose all the covers from a similar worms eye angle, not just for theatrics but rather to literally show the life cycle of a Space Marine as he fights and rises through the ranks, leading his brethren and eventually being entombed within a dreadnought to continue his tireless fig
*PACT* - It's funded!!!*UPDATE* Awesome news: PACT reached its funding goal!!! It's happeneing. Anyone still on the fence, you still have 60~ hrs to contribute. $29 gets you a two year membership. Signal boosting an important funding project!
PACT (Professional Artist-Client Toolkit) will be a tool to help genre artists negotiate better living wages. The fantasy industry needs something like this BIG-TIME. Wage rates have stagnated and in many cases decreased over the years, despite the fact that there is more art being commissioned than ever. It is increasingly more difficult to sustain a career as a fantasy or sci-fi illustrator, and things are not going to get better unless the illustration community tries to change it. This is what PACT is for.
Making PACT happen is every bit as import

Drawn to Death! The game I’ve been working on has been announced at PSX!Drawn to Death!4 months ago in Personal More Like This
I’ve been working on a game since the beginning of the year as the main character concept artist. It’s still in pre-alpha stage, so there’s still lots to do, but please check out the teaser trailer that was shown at Playstation Experience just this morning!
(warning for crude violent humor, blood and gore)
I know there is only one female character in the game right now, but I am actively working and fighting to change that. There’s two other girls in the works, as well as two black characters (one who might be disabled as well!). Please cheer me on and send me good vibes! I will need them!
(Hope to share concept art as soon as I get the green light from the boss)
Thanks everyone for your patience! I'll get to answering comments and posting artwork again soon
4 Kinds of StorytellingHere's an old journal from 2010 about storytelling. Because I have a lot more readers these days, I think I'm going to start reposting some of my earlier posts for my newer audience. So for you old timers, feel free to skip.4 Kinds of Storytelling2 years ago in Personal More Like This
In full disclosure, I slightly edited this journal to make it a little more balanced (while also fixing a ton of typos).
I feel like the word "storytelling" gets thrown around a lot in our industry. Yet when I look out there at some comics, I don't always see a lot of evidence for it.
It feels like people in comics pros--myself included--often use the word only because we feel like we're supposed to. Over the years enough professionals have been accused of being poor storytellers to the degree that everyone is now afraid of being a pinup artist as opposed to a bona fide storyteller. But it's not enough just to claim you're a storyteller.
Most people reading this probably h

THREE TIPS FOR DRAWING CARSYou know that green ellipse tool that you bought in art school? Do you know how to use it for something other than oval shapes? Do you know what those "cross-hair" marks are for? And do you know how to use it for technically correct perspective drawings?THREE TIPS FOR DRAWING CARS2 years ago in Personal More Like This
TOO many comics artists don't, and it's driving me crazy. So instead of starting a blog that starts showing examples and naming names, I figured it was better to make a quick tutorial. And this isn't just for cars but also for guns, fire hydrants, and millions of other machined objects found in comics.
If you go through this and you're still stuck, please don't write to me. I'm happy to show you at a convention to make it clearer, but within a blog this is the best I can do. Check out "Perspective for Comic Artists by David Chelsea" for more.
Cars are a whole lot easier to draw if you know how to properly use perspective and ellipses. The more familiar you are with the math, the more fun it is to draw cars. Once I figured out th

Re-brandingFor quite some time, I've been shifting to new art themes and techniques in my work.Re-branding8 months ago in Personal More Like This
From my perspective, there was a considerable evolution in terms of artistic vision and even worldy outlook over the past few years that I had. What I did in the past, I've no interest in during the present day, and I think it's cool. Change of path to avoid a stagnation for a hobbyist.
Torture-device was all about warhammer, gore, and politically spurring journals. I'm no longer interested in warhammer, I dunno what to say new in gore, and in my 28 years I've realized the intrinsic futility of announcing your political opinions on the internet. You might say I'm too old too realize that, but I'm as much as a product of the Internet age as most of us here, and good that I realized it not a decade later, like many still do - I feel lucky)
TD-Vice, in return, just wants to do his own concept art, visually cool stuff, his own stories and with time, move to more lucrative grounds for exposure. It's all abo

Morrowind FeatureMorrowind Feature3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind is my favourite game of all time, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. I've been planning for awhile to put together a game-inspired feature; unfortunately, it is very hard to find genuine fan art since most Morrowind-related deviations on dA are game screenshots (or manipulations thereof), and I found only a limited number of devs I could use.
For those unfamiliar with the game, Morrowind is an open-ended first-person RPG with an expansive and detailed world, released in 2002. The central plot concerns the deity Dagoth Ur, housed within the volcanic Red Mountain, who seeks to gain power and break Morrowind free from Imperial reign. In addition to the extensive main quest, there are detailed discursive quests for a variety of factions, including various guilds, religious organizations, and aristocratic houses.
Lord Voryn Dagoth had been a good friend of Lord Indoril Nerevar, but they tu

5 Comic Book Truths (that I don't think are true)There are lots of tips, chestnuts, and other pieces of advice that I've heard over the years--tidbits of wisdom passed on from one generation to the next, from professional to professor to prospective student. Some of them are drawing tips, some of them are tricks to dealing with publishers, and some are general guidelines on how to survive in comics. Most of them are useful and true and will stand the test of time, but a few of them have become hackneyed platitudes and have gone unquestioned for too long. Here are 5 that I'm questioning...5 Comic Book Truths (that I don't think are true)1 year ago in Personal More Like This
1. READERS WILL ONLY LOOK AT A PANEL FOR 5 SECONDS, SO DON'T SWEAT IT TOO MUCH.
I understand the intention of this bit of wisdom, and I mostly agree with it: drawing great interiors is important, but at the same time, you don't want to get bogged down with small details that most readers won't even notice.
But here's my concern with this: if you treat every panel like it's disposable, then you're less likely to make an impact with reader
