Would you like to not only black out your journal and avoid the internet from 8 am to 8 pm (EST) on January 18th, but black out your page? Here's how:
Do you know how to code custom widgets? If not, it's easy. Here's a code to give your widgets black backgrounds:
WIDGET TEXT HERE
To really black out your page for the day, remove all widgets from your page* except 2 custom widgets, one on each side, that can have all black.
*You might want to copy and paste the text of each widget into a Word document or something so you can get your regular widgets back tomorrow. Do not copy and paste the widget coding into Sta.sh Writer. I recommend putting your text in a non-internet location so that it doesn't apply any of the HTML or CSS to itself.

Good Story Advice and the Power of PatienceI recently picked up a copy of Stephen King's the Dark Tower I and while I've yet to read the actual story, the book opens with a thoughtful introduction that contains a number of insightful pieces of commentary. However, the particular part of this opening introduction that really stood out to me was the portion where King mentioned Tolkien's influence on him as a youth and as a writer. He talks about how wildly popular Tolkien's work was with kids growing up around that time, and how reading Tolkien's work eventually inspired his own. In King's own words:Good Story Advice and the Power of Patience3 years ago in Personal More Like This
"But although I read the books in 1966 and 1967, I held off writing. I responded (with a rather touching wholeheartedness) to the sweep of Tolkien's imagination-to the ambition of his story-but I wanted to write my own kind of story, and had I started then, I would have written his. That...would have been wrong. Thanks to Mr. Tolkien, the twentieth century had all the wizards and elves it needed."
And that's a big reas

In this we agree, Tiarnan--Father Burke: As a culture, we've lost our reticence. What a beautiful thing--holding back the whole of it. That is not to say that truth should remain unsaid but more to observe that we've all been in such a hurry to reveal ourselves that we don't permit truth to sink into our souls. We act on impulse--on feeling--without taking the time to anchor sentiment.
I do not believe people lie when they profess their love or disgust, but these are such delicate feelings. They deserve proper care and tending. Waiting for that first kiss--that first sign or first sight of someone after sex--well, fine. [Laughs.] I won't talk to a priest about sex.
It is not a missed opportunity to remain silent if what you have to say doesn't need to be said. When did we stop trusting other people to understand the power in a touch--a glance. [Laughs] I see your look, now. You think I'm getting romantic in my old age. Maybe I am.
But how beautiful, to be in an o
one of the most disappointing things everto happen in a series:one of the most disappointing things ever3 years ago in Personal More Like This
1) You get very high expectations for a character and anticipate nothing less than utter badassery and coolitude from said character only for the character to actually turn out to be shitty and lame to the point where you actually end up wanting them to get killed off as opposed to rooting for them. All your expectations of this character ever being the badass you thought they were and would be are irreparably dashed to the ground.
2) The character in question starts out as the coolest person in the series and one of your absolute favorites before gradually becoming lamer and lamer and more contradictory as the series progresses to the point where you end up just hating that same character more than anyone else in the series.
The worst feelings.
Edit: This isn't referring to a specific series, I just mean in general when it happens.
Wreck-It RalphI'm not putting any major spoilers in here, but this is....easily the best film I've seen all year. Can't remember the last time I saw an animated film that made me feel happy and sad at the same time (in addition to making me laugh). The closest thing I have to a 'critique' for the film would be that I sort of thought Ralph would explore more than just two other games (Hero's Duty and Sugar Rush) in addition to his own, but otherwise it's really difficult for me to think of anything I didn't enjoy about this film.Wreck-It Ralph2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Also, just so you know: pop culture references, references everywhere. (and done in a way that was funny and not irritating at all). Plus, at first I wasn't sure if Vanellope was going to be a character that was going to be irritating or not, but she was actually really funny and I actually felt sorry for her at times omg. (Kinda glad for that because I hate it when a bunch of people rave to me about a character in a series or a film and they turn out to be rea
Popular Fan ArtThis has been bothering me for some time now, and I've seen this sort of behavior even before I joined dA, but some folks honestly need to stop acting like artists who happen to draw fan art or fan comics for "popular" series automatically makes them "cheap" or that they're somehow shallow people because of it. People can actually, you know, like a series that's popular and end up wanting to draw fan works because they want to. Popular or well-known works or series are going to have lots of fans, so it's not exactly unnatural that more people might be inclined to draw fan art for certain series. It's one thing if you're not a fan of something popular, because it's completely normal for people to have preferences, but when you're just being dismissive of someone else entirely or looking down on them just because the subject matter they choose to draw is "popular" then it makes you look petty and/or jealous. Because, let's be honest, there are people who get really pissed and uptiPopular Fan Art3 years ago in Personal More Like This
pokemon is still pretty much the same shitWhen it comes to reboots, remakes, and new installments I can go either way depending on how they're done. Sometimes I think reboots or new installments are utter garbage or just fucking stupid compared to their predecessors (or just COMPLETELY deviate from their roots to the point of not being recognizable), other times I think they're pretty alright (or, in some few cases, even better).pokemon is still pretty much the same shit3 years ago in Personal More Like This
But seriously, despite the fact people still complain about how we "shouldn't" have added anything to the original 150 pokemon, I'm gonna be honest and say that I think it would have been a downright waste to have that entire expanse of pokemon lore and universe with every new game containing the same zubats, geodudes, and pikachus over and over an over. I've seen people say things like, "this is dumb, let's just make new regions but with the same pokemon" but seriously? I don't want to buy and play different games in different lands just so I can catch the same shit that I own in every other p

With the growth in popularity of the e-book many authors are seeing a glimmer of hope and realizing that they can get their work out there without having to break into the velvet roped publishing house exclusive party. This means that you will begin to get even more solicitations from those authors looking for artists to bring visuals to their words.
If you have a website or have done any degree of online advertising of your artwork, you have probably gotten an e-mail with a similar message as the title. If not, you will at some point. It's best to be prepared now. For those who have gotten it, nine times out of ten you aren’t sure how to respond to it, what should you ask, how do you respond?

The WHUTler - I Like Analysis but this is RidicI love a good analysis as much as the next person. Even the ones that are meant to be satirical, comedic, or generally sarcastic. But I think there are times when people just get so into something (or a character) that they feel the need to over-analyze their every action or just look into it to the point where they either end up seeing something that isn't there, or take something and make it out to be deeper than it actually is.The WHUTler - I Like Analysis but this is Ridic3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I see a lot of GIF sets for shows like Sherlock, Avengers/Thor, and Doctor Who that do a lot of, "let's take a GIF set or images from this scene and write a complex analysis for this character or that character or this scene."
And then, most recently, we have the Once-ler fandom.
I'll admit that I didn't watch the entire Lorax film, but I've seen enough clips/scenes from the movie as well as GIF sets and summaries/reviews to know pretty much how all of it goes down. The overall general consensus seems to be that the movie was fairly shitty, although th

This bill (which uses Child Pornography as it's cover) would effectively track every time you look at your bank statement or use a credit card online, and force IP service providers to record your credit card and billing statement info, along with your recent internet search histories, and store them in a "secure" place for 18 months. Anything which looked "suspicious" would immediately be flagged to allow the government to step in.
Since billing statements and online transactions are so common these days, this bill would, In effect, be monitoring everything everyone

After I rubbed my eyes and blinked again, I had to come to terms with the fact that this was, indeed, fucking real. After nearly six years, too.
It always felt like there's was a bit of a cliffhanger after Season 3 (I was at the peak of my obsession for this show at the time) and I expected a Season 4, but after, you know, six years went by I sort of stopped thinking about that lol.
I'm not a fan of Jack's voice in this trailer (too childish) or Chase's, I heard that they're temporary voices filling for the trailer until official voice actors are found for them (although Tara Strong will be making a return as Omi and, according to the description, David Kaye will now voice Chase Young instead of Jason Marsden). I'm not really big on the idea of using weird-looking CGI just for the Shen Gong Wu fights, and Chase looks like he's wearing extra liner than I remember, but holy shit this is a really real thing that's happening. Female VillainsAs you probably already know, I really like villain characters, but it sort of makes me sad how often female villains seem like they have this rule where it's like they're required to be ~*sexy*~ first and then villains second. Or they have to be voluptuous or seductive femme fatales first and foremost and then be evil and cunning second (the level of evil and cunning really depending on the character, but still). Having a "sexy" female villainess isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the fact it's so much more prevalent with females as opposed to males and feels more like this unwritten rule and obligatory mold for them still disappoints me. I notice a lot in superhero comics the villainesses will be far more likely (if not always) wearing something far sexier or revealing as opposed to the males, and even then they'll have the same cut-n-paste sexy body type (and sometimes even the same face shapes, eye, and lip shapes) while the males are usually more clothed and meant to have tFemale Villains3 years ago in Personal More Like This

My Top Ten Gaming Villains List Part 1Every has a list of favorite baddies, right? Sure, why not.My Top Ten Gaming Villains List Part 13 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've seen a number of Top Ten gaming villains lists floating around the web for a while and I felt like sharing my own (keep in mind that I'm not saying this list is written law. It's simply based on personal preference and my reasons behind said preferences, so if you could refrain from "I think so-and-so should be on here" comments, that'd be awesome). Note: Most of these aren't ranked in a particular order and I'm going to have to split this into multiple parts due to sheer length.
1. SHODAN (System Shock)
While I've never had a chance to play System Shock or System Shock 2 (its spiritual successor, Bioshock, is probably the closest I'll ever get), that doesn't lessen the fact that SHODAN is probably one of the scariest and intimidating pieces of fictional artificial intelligence I've ever seen.
As the main antagonist of System Shock and System Shock 2, she serves as a dangerous all-powerful AI with removed et
Original Characters and FanartI've been seeing this topic appear more on my dash lately, so I'm pretty much just going to chip in my cents and say that I think it's nothing short of ridiculous when people complain about how their original work never gets attention and that people "only care" when they draw fanart.Original Characters and Fanart3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Newsflash: You're essentially complaining about the fact that people are getting more excited about an already established and widely recognized series with an already present fanbase instead of an "original" character that maybe appeared, what, only once or twice in your entire gallery.
A lot of artists try to pin the blame on other people for being attracted to fanart or make it seem as if others are just "too shallow to care about original OCs they just want to see fanart WAAAAHHHH" but if you've spent most of your time loading up your gallery with fanart of already existing series while only drawing your "origunul churruckter" once or twice with a small dash of "lol maybe i'll draw them again sometime
Knowing When to Put the Foot Down and Say NoI have a number of things I want to say on this topic, but before I do, there's this quote:Knowing When to Put the Foot Down and Say No3 years ago in Personal More Like This
"Some of you are continuing to buy books you don't like. Some of you, I would venture, have been doing this for years. I direct this, with all the lovingkindness in my soul, to you:
The time has come to stop doing that.
Stop playing on their terms.
Because they've got you, and they know they do, because they've had you for years in some cases. They're holding you by the short-and-curlies, because they know, they absolutely know that if they publish something with "Bat" in the title, or the letter "X," or the word "Spider" you will buy it, and you will keep on buying it no matter its quality. No matter if they're ignoring you, or if in some instances they've even gone so far as to outright insult and dismiss you.
This isn't an indictment of any particular story or event or character or creative team or anything like that. For every story that someone loves, there's som
