Stylenoir Monarchy ContestStylenoir Magazine is the world's largest dark style magazine and, after three years online, they launched to print earlier this year with tremendous success - selling out within the first month! Stylenoir wants to share this success with us, by offering a limited number of deviants features online and in print in the form of a contest!Stylenoir Monarchy Contest2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Stylenoir features digital and traditional artists alongside their fashion photography editorials - the Retribution print issue featured dA artists AUTR3 and Dan-Heffer - and this contest will reflect that diversity with three separate categories!
The theme for the next issue of Stylenoir is Monarchy. Your entries should reflect this (keeping in mind the aesthetic and ethos of Stylenoir Magazine). We want to see your Monarchy artworks!
Please submit your entries to the Stylenoir Monarchy category.
Contest: Crossovers! As kids, we often mashed our toys together, regardless of Copyright. Superman would take command of G.I. Joe to defeat the combined forces of Doctor Doom and the Decepticons, while Barbie took a break from her idealistic lifestyle to become a Pokemon master. And the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles got recruited into Starfleet and taught Spock the wonders of pizza. (And from the furor arose Mister Rogers in a blood-stained sweater.)Contest: Crossovers!3 years ago in Official DeviantArt Contests More Like This
And thus, the Crossover was born. It's something we never really outgrew, either. To this day, seeing our favorite characters from different stories meet and compete is a guilty pleasure that we all like to indulge in. So now's your chance to indulge yourselves for prizes!

Theme: "Working From Minimal Detail"
More often than we realize, artists are faced with "that one client" who either can not or will not provide you enough detail for you to confidently work. Most of the time, artists can really take these details and run with them, creating beautiful and meaningful works of art from a few simple, often generic, traits.
We realize that not every artist's area of expertise is in humanoids. We will provide three sets of details. One for animal forms, one for anthropomor

The Epic Author-OffTWO AUTHORS ENTER...ONE AUTHOR LEAVESThe Epic Author-Off2 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
Ladies, gents, and unclassy bitches, welcome to the Bibliodome! Here in each corner we've got our opponents, getting ready to face off in an epic battle of words, the likes of which have never been seen before and will never be seen again.
Well, unless you've been watching epic rap battles on YouTube.
thank you SilverInkblot for linking me this!
Anyway, the plan is a bracket-style showdown in which you pick an author and use mad skills (all kinds of literature welcome! Prose, poetry, song, etc!) to get to the top, while of course doing your best to represent that author's life and, more than anything else, literary style.
There must be at least 16 people for this to happen. Brackets look silly if there aren't at least four rounds, so tell your friends. And then blackmail them until they promise to submit an entry. You keep a dossier on th
Vampire HuntersTime has come for our September > October themed contest, which is asking you to create your own Vampire Hunter!Vampire Hunters3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Sample Dolls :
no base / base
The first gal is a roller disco vampire hunter; the second, victorian with a stake staff.
You can enter a doll on any base, in whatever colors you'd like, dressed in any sort of clothes, from any setting. The only rules are that she must look like a vampire hunter, showing some signs of this as her profession, and that she must be wielding some sort of vampire-fighting weapon.
We encourage you to create your own setting or place your vampire hunter into a strange time and place; does he or she fight space zombies? Is she a 60s flight attendant who deals with them on airplanes? Is he a wanderer in the coldest of mountains, dealing with fur-covered vampires there? Give us a bit of a blurb in the artist comments telling us about your setting and justifying
PE - History of DollingWritten by IridescentStardust and ducky-overlordPE - History of Dolling3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The original idea behind dolls (and why they're called dolls in the first place) comes from the cut-out paper dolls - a paper cut-out of a figure (typically in underwear) with separate clothes that hold onto the figure with folding tabs.
The first popular version of virtual 'paper dolls' was through a Japanese program called KiSS (Kisekae Set System), dating back to 1991. Originally they were the same as paper dolls - only on the computer. A base figure, or template, had different sets of clothes to drag and drop onto the template. Using layers, they were able to create an illusion of depth not possible with paper dolls (for example - a figure with their hands in front of them would have different layers, making it easy to have a sleeve in front of the chest, a bag, arm-warmers, or other accessories).

PE: Importance of AnatomyThe importance of anatomy.PE: Importance of Anatomy3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Understanding anatomy is crucial to many aspects of your art.
You'll notice that anatomy is essential for drawing. It becomes difficult to accurately draw a complex pose, or even a simple one, if you don't understand what's under all that skin or fur, or even bark. Knowing how everything fits together is important.
Once you notice where that certain muscle is, shading and form become much more accurate and more natural. Knowing why the nose and eyes fall where they do make it much easier to draw from memory, and nail that natural look you were going for.
Learning the anatomy of the subject you're going to draw is quite important, and will definitely help you on several levels.
It's also easier to drawing sequences of movement. One will know what connects to what, and how they move. What is possible, and what isn't. (Range of motion)
Drawing people and other animals can be intimidating. Once you have a solid foundation, it's much easier

Hello, welcome to Dolling 101! We'll be going over all the basics that every beginner doller should know. There's a lot, so let's get to it!
Lesson 1: Terminology/Vocabulary
What is a Doll?
It might help to begin this article by telling you what you're reading about! A doll, or as we call them on DeviantArt, Digital Dolls, are small graphics, usually pixel-art, of people and characters. People create these by taking a base body another person has made, and creating art on it - designing clothes and hair, and turning the blank template into whatever kind of character they can imagine.
I will go over dolls more in detail, but that's the very basic description. Please, read on!
What is a Base?
Bases! You're probably familiar with this term. That's right, those pixel line-arts of bald/naked people that

"Pearls are Women´s best Friends"
"What is it about Pearls that makes them so mysterious? So exotic?
Pesonally I think it is because they are adornments that are made by the sea...
They are not hard, cold gemstones that have been crushed by the earth for millions of years;
they have been nestled in the soft warmth of an oyster, surrounded by salty and sandy waters.
Diamonds say, "See me sparkle! Look at me I am beautiful."
Pearls say, "I am mysterious, so come closer and figure out why.
I do not flash, there is more to me."
When thinking of pearls, most have visions of the "string of pearls"
a young girl gets as she sets off to university or is given for her wedding day.
Signifying purity and even perhaps virginity.
But the Pearl laughs at this.
Its demure, gossimer glow tells another story all together.
Have you seen pearls in candlelight?
Pearls have remained quiet and relatively uninvasive over time,
but take another glance at history to see the most seduct

Hi and Welcome to the Out of Place Contest! Have you seen a panda bear exploring the icy region of Antarctica lately? How about that photobombing zebra from your latest trip to the D.C. National Mall? Did you hear about the penguin’s last vacation in Jamaica? I heard he was sipping mai tais on the beach! Well this is your chance to take something and put it in a completely different place than what you would expect!
The Mission Objective: Take at least two different elements and combine them for a completely unexpected result. Whether you’re sending a giraffe to the moon, or letting a scorpion drive a submarine, this should baffle us as much as you can beyond the scope of your imagination!

The Problem With Character SheetsAlright, there are some pretty awesome character sheets out there. I don't personally use them, but I've seen others make them work. I'm not here to dispute the fact that they've got some utility, but I am here to point out one big problem with relying on a list of traits—which is generally how character sheets present these things—to define your character. The Problem With Character Sheets2 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
(Note: This also applies to Mary Sue tests. 'Not a Mary Sue' just means your character isn't a perfect storm of coincidence. It has nothing to do with likeability or even believability. <insert dictator here> isn't a Mary Sue, either.)
I think this approach is, if it's the only approach you take to figuring out a character, a really bad idea.
Take a moment to think about your best friend. What's their favorite food? What are they good at, and what are things they do that make you Google good places to dump a body?

Back to Basics Photography - CompositionLately I've seen quite a few photos that have potential, but need some work. Composition is one of the most important parts to taking any photo (and making any piece of art really) and so I thought I'd share a few basic rules and tips. The word composition simply means 'putting together' and so, with any piece of art, it's how the piece is put together. With a bit of practice while keeping these tips in mind, you can create a more impacting, pleasing to the eye piece of work that will draw the viewer in and keep them interesting.Back to Basics Photography - Composition3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
You could crop your images afterwards when you get them onto the computer, but it'd be lovely to have a great image right off the boot, right? By keeping in mind the things below, you'll be well on your way to taking better photos. And don't forget, it's always better to know the rules before you start break them A few tips before we start;
Look around using the viewfinder every time you take a picture.
Look at each element and how it impacts the overall co
