Photomanips for BeginnersWhat is a photomanipulation?Photomanips for Beginners4 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Photomanipulations are images that have been composed of two or more photographic elements to create something new.
This is what the gallery description states. But what does it mean?
It means that a photomanipulation is based on photographs.
Not sketches scanned in (like line art for example) or screenshots from a video game. However, if you scan a photograph or for example dried flowers, it would be considered a photograph; while a photograph taken of line art still remains a sketch and is not consiered a photograph. Video game screenshots are copyrighted images btw and as such cannot be used at all.
It means that you need to use more than one photograph.
Retouching work as well as work that uses brushes or texture overlays only to "spice up" a photo that was taken by yourself(!) should be submitted to Photography > Darkroom, while work that uses stock images (i.e. images that you did not take yourself) should be

Photography Troubleshooting: FiltersThis week we bring you another issue of Photography Troubleshooting to hopefully give you some tips and explanations behind how to make use of some photography accessories. If you have a question, query or any thoughts you wish to see discussed just drop us a comment or note!Photography Troubleshooting: Filters3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
"The use of filters, how to pick them and examples of situations where they would be helpful...."
Hi moria330, filters are a good way of diversifying your photographic opportunities without spending a great deal of money (though, granted, many of the better quality filters can get to be relatively expensive).
In film photography, filters were used a lot more extensively then they are today thanks to the nature of the medium.
For example colour filters were used for white balance purposes on colour films that were balanced for different light types, so, you could shoot artificial light balanced film under daylight if you had a filter that corrected for it.

1. Miscellaneous vs Other
Over the past few months, we've been diligently working on cleaning up the category tree of old and unused categories. While most of this will go unnoticed by the community, what you will notice is the change from "Miscellaneous" galleries to "Other". The reason for this change is simple. The concept of Miscellaneous leads one to believe that it's a junk drawer category for everything under the sun when the intention was to be an "Other" category for deviations that don't fit well in other sub-categories of the tree. We're also working on u

Photography Troubleshooting: How to work with MistGetting the camera out, and the scarf, hat and gloves, and heading into a misty morning or hazy evening can result in the best kind of photographs. Atmospheric, moody and ultimately a fine example of whatever current season you're in - these kinds of shots present themselves at awkward moments so it's vitally important to be prepared. In previous years I've got up at the crack of dawn and ventured out with all the excitement of a young child on their first day of school - only to come home with a grazed knee and broken felt tip pens. Or rather, washed out, blurred and altogether rubbish photographs.Photography Troubleshooting: How to work with Mist3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Fog is a popular mist - we often get confused and just term it all as fog or all as mist. It's not quite like that. It's all about the visibility, if we can see less than 1km through it then it's fog. If we can see between 1 - 2 km then it's mist. So when is the best time to catch these ground level clouds at their best? Fo

"Creativity, like human life itself - begins in Darkness "
I read a very interesting article this week debating Photography Vs Literature and which one of the two tells us more. Of course there is always the element that a picture could be accompanied by words but neither aspect is enough to tell a whole story. But as the article says, Photography has become a universal constant in the world today and is accessible to nearly everybody. Yet many still believe that only pure narration can truly tell a story. What are your thoughts? As Photographers we can choose to limit what we tell or show with a photograph, we can even mislead. Can we convey more with words? Or more with an image? You could describe a person with words but never truly give an accurate picture of who they are visually without a photograph...

"Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.”
Basking in the glory of finally getting recognised for your hard efforts and photographic skill is pretty awesome and at the start of this week I took the opportunity to enjoy georgewjohnson's after he got published in a UK Photography Magazine. It's really nice when something like that happens and the knowledge that across the country - and because of deviantART and other networks - across the world, people are looking at your work. And if you're me, smiling! I once stumbled across lauren-rabbit's work in Black and White Photography Magazine and was truly proud that somebody I had found here on deviantART was here in my mag! So have you been published? Has your work received any recognition that makes you proud? What are your tips to getting out there and having your work showcased?

Planetary Mythology Photomanipulation Competition!Mythology of the PlanetsPlanetary Mythology Photomanipulation Competition!2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Welcome to the latest "dark" photomanipulation contest, supported by Community Relations here on deviantART. This contest will challenge you to think outside of the box, for you will have to not only create something, but you will need to do a bit of research and think about why you are creating it. Are you ready for a competition that is out of this world?
Before we go any further, let me clarify that PLUTO COUNTS!
What do I have to do?
Choose one of the planets (or Pluto) in our solar system, listed below. Moons or suns can be a part of the larger picture, but they do not count as your god/goddess.
Your job is to create a PHOTOMANIPULATION in which you show a myth around a planetary ruler (that is, the god or goddess after which the planets were named).
The gods/goddesses can be Greek, Roman, or other.... but they must be planetary rulers.

Art History: Writing a Pantomime:iconarthistoryproject: :iconcrliterature:Art History: Writing a Pantomime3 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
Pantomime is easy to write? (Oh no it isn’t!)
Pantomime is a traditional form of theatre, which in its most recognised form originated from the Victorian era and continues to be a prominent aspect of British theatre today. Writing a Pantomime as a scriptwriter may seem like an easy feat- the traditional fairy-tale put onto stage, but in fact it is a style where the traditional conventions are still a strong element of modern pantomime scriptwriting.
This art history article not only shares where the origins of pantomime came from, but shares some of those conventions which as a scriptwriter need consider before writing.
The birth of Pantomime
Like most forms of theatre, the origins of pantomime derive from the ancient Greeks. Greek theatre was not only an entertainment form, but a celebration of the god Dionysus and a way of retelling the stories we now know as Greek Myths. Significant
Stock and Resources UpdatesLETS TALK ABOUT STOCK "REQUESTS"Stock and Resources Updates3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Every year we get excited, eager, passionate new stock providers entering our small but growing community, and every year these new stock models in particular get targeted by a small group of "requesters" Those of us who have been on the site for more than a few years recognise the types of "requests" I'm talking about and know to absolutely avoid them at all costs, but its something that I've seen more and more regularly over the last few months, and its definitely a concern.
There are standard "pose requests" that are NOT requested for the "artist" to work from. They are simply asking you to take photos of yourself in provocative poses so they can get off to your stock.
Firstly - please keep in mind that the images you are providing to artists are STOCK ART - they are first and foremost designed to provide artists with useable, useful references, either for traditional art, or digital art or whatever media they choose to create

Because for nearly everybody that's exactly how it begins. The response was incredible, however one reply in particular touched me. JaredWingate permitted me to share so here we go...

REMINDER: Photomanip Tutorial Challenge!Welcome to our official tutorial challenge!REMINDER: Photomanip Tutorial Challenge!3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Another tutorial challenge? YES! Keep reading!
Part of "illumination" is learning, expanding our horizons, and helping others learn as well. So, this time we are not going to USE tutorials. Rather, we are going to MAKE them.
What you have to do
Your job is as follows:
Take a critical look at your gallery. What are your strengths as an artist? What are you really good at doing? Are you known for your light and shadow? Color use? "Glow" effects? Do you do skin well? Can you paint really well? Are you a master of masks? What do people compliment you on?
Create a detailed tutorial, with examples, of how you achieve this effect or do this technique. It does not have to involve the creation of a new deviation. You can explain how you did this effect in an old deviation or just with stock without making it a full deviation.
Not So Traditional Tuesdays #2After a little debate with myself (I won! ), I've decide to change up the features that I generally put out every week. So, for a while at least, I plan on featuring Traditional and Non-Traditional work on alternating Tuesdays. This will keep it fresh for me and maybe open a few eyes to all the different kinds of artwork that is available while browsing the deviantArt galleries. The things that make one piece of art great applies, for the most part, to other genres. A painter can learn how light and shadow fall from photography, photo-manipulators can learn about composition from a great Manga drawing, and literature can give you the inspiration to try something new or take your work to the next step. You may never try all art forms you see! You can however take what you learn from them and incorporate that into your own work. It could be the difference between stagnating and that breakthrough every artist wants to find! Not So Traditional Tuesdays #23 years ago in Art Features More Like This
