Artscape: Comic Book HeroesThe ABC TV channel here in Australia (different to the ABC in the USA) on their Artscape show on Tuesday nights has had a mini documentary series called 'Comic Book Heroes.'Artscape: Comic Book Heroes2 years ago in Personal More Like This
It's all about Perth Australia publishers Gestalt Comics headed by Wolfgang Bylsma, and featuring the talents of artists Justin Randall, Gary Chaloner, Tom Taylor, and Emily Smith amongst others. All of whom I've met at one time or another of course being local in Perth as well.
The documentary follows the guys over the course of 2 years as they try to break into the US comic market by attending sdcc and other cons and expand the company profile through media deals. (They got their comic "The Deep" picked up and made into an animated series premiering in 2014!) plus interest in their series "Changing Ways" from the same people who are producing The Walking Dead! Negotiations are still ongoing there apparently...
Now if you missed the show don't fret. It's available on the ABC's iView online on demand (and free to v

It's Austen here, I'm a freelance illustrator from Perth, Western Australia and I've recently been involved with Fringe Games, who have made a cool collectable card game: War Command. It's play style has been described as a mix of Magic the Gathering & chess, and is Fringe Games' first big project - as well as one of mine.
War Command has a Kickstarter raising funds right now for the physical release version of the game. Please check it out and share it round cause we could really use all the help we can get. You'll be supporting not only the game but all the illustrators (myself included) who've done all the artwork for it. Think of it as a kind of pre-order for the whole thing - w

Getting published by Games Companies - Part 1Hi folks,Getting published by Games Companies - Part 16 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I just wanted to start putting up some useful info for all the artists just starting out, and want to work in the games industry.
(I've worked with Wizards of the Coast, Blizzard Entertainment, White Wolf Publishing, Black Library, Paizo Publishing, FanPro, Codemasters, Backbone Entertainment, Argonaut Games PLC, Pelgrane Press, Digi Guysand Nightfall Games. I've worked as an artist, Art Director and Game/Story Developer).
So, here's a few things to mull over in Part One.
RESEARCH THEIR CATALOGUE
Okay, first and foremost - research the desired company. Look at their titles, and the art inside their books. Try and send as much appropriate artwork as you can - the stuff you feel would actually belong in their books. I'm not just talking about content (orcs, elves and castles) but also the style of the art (traditional, digital, photographic).
Also LOOK at their submission guidelines, as they may have strict parameters for what they want to see. I've a frie
WORKING FOR THE GAMES COMPANIES - PART 2We're back! Ready for Part 2WORKING FOR THE GAMES COMPANIES - PART 25 years ago in Personal More Like This
This is a tricky one when you're just starting out, as you're not sure how long a painting may take (particularly if you're working on unfamiliar material). Three weeks for the sketch submission may seem like a long time, but you've got to factor in the revisions to your drawings, and the time it may take to get feedback. Answers may not be immediate, especially if the art director has to consult a writer or R+D team (it may take several days).
Basically you want to give yourself as much time as possible for these eventualities, so try and get on with these sketches in as promptly as you can.
Don't try and gamble on the 'I know, I'll leave my sketches til the absolute last possible moment so the art director has to approve it or he'll fall behind'. Most of these guys will just smile knowingly, and give you the exact same amount of changes regardless. Now you've got to race to catch up and the late changes are eating into the time you

I have never found a companion who was so companionable as solitude.
Henry David Thoreau
By :icontechgnotic: techgnotic
I I always thought of Thoreau’s comment as simply a word game — clever but ultimately false at its core. A Valentines Day without a Valentine means being alone and alone means being unhappy. It’s taken many years to finally understand the truth in Thoreau’s words. We are never so alone as when in the company of loving family and friends, our Valentine companion held tight in our arms – but knowing we are lost, unfulfilled in our dreams and visions, and untrusting in our own inner counsel. Now I hope to one day seek companions

Fast lane to becoming a better artist.I often get this very question: How did you get this good this fast?Fast lane to becoming a better artist.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Now as I consider myself not being as good as people tell me, even struggling quite often with being an artist in general.
I do know how to get better and how to reach it fast. I'm still growing as I go and it's the main thing that keeps me going.
You need to get into the right mindset and the rest will follow. With the rest I mean:
3. Positive energy.
4. The NEED to draw.
Seeing growth in your work gives you the courage to work harder. You know that feeling when you're just about done with an image
and feel like this image is better than your last one, that great feeling. Use it!
Do studies! Lots of them!! Make film shot studies, live object studies, master-painting studies. They will teach you a lot about composition, lighting, colors, shapes storytelling etc.
You will hardly notice that you are learning thing
Avoid getting ripped off by a client. As a freelancer most of your business takes place online, which makes it really easyAvoid getting ripped off by a client.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
for people to rip you off. How many times have we seen the following scenario's:
1- Someone offers a descent payment for your artwork but wants you to do an art-test first.
after the art-test you're being told you're not good enough. Later you find out that other people
got to do different art-test topics and also weren't good enough. The client clearly ripped people off to get free artwork.
2- Someone offers good money for your artwork. The sketch gets approved so you continue working. Right when it's done the total image suddenly becomes a great disappointment and the client ends up not paying you.
These were just 2 examples of situations that happen a lot to freelancers. There are many more like it.
How to detect if a client is a bit fishy...
Does their email address look professional? Some legit people may use their Gmail address, with their real name or nickname, those are questionabl

orld War I (1914-1918) was a human catastrophe
that devastated Western civilization and mocked the hope inherent in “modernism”. The sheer volume of the war’s slaughter was beyond belief. The horror of it all destroyed the trust in science, medicine and technology as the golden gateway to a harmonious and peaceful future for humanity. All that was thought to be good had been twisted to the evil purpose of a global war. A global sense of hopefulness was replaced with a global sense of fear and loathing.

The line up of amazing actors, artists and pop culture icons were the best I've ever seen! Carrie Fisher, Karl Urban, Alan Tudyk and James and Oliver Phelps (The Weasley Twins!) who I saw in passing as they were ZOOMED across the showgrounds in a mini golf cart. The Hoff (David Hasselhoff) made a pretty enthusiastic arrival and was given the tallest table on the panel (seriously, he had the tallest table for some weird reason...?) There were a lot more than these few amazing people on the actors panel but I didn't get to see them from afar (I was there for the comic book artists to be honest so..)
In the comic book category of awesome guests, there was the amazing Chris Claremont who I talked to...about the weather of all things. -facepalm- and asked him to draw so

PAY RATE OF THE COMIC ARTISTOver the past few weeks, Ive had a few queries for work as a comic book artist. Some from private individuals and some from professional companies and as always the sticky issue of costs comes up.PAY RATE OF THE COMIC ARTIST4 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I personally like to be very frank and upfront about cost to people. My time is quite limited so I cant afford to dance around the subject on tip toes hoping to lure them in for a bite. The result so far has been I havent heard back. For me, thats okay cos like they say time is money and for me thats especially true. Plus, I dont want to put out for less than my time is worth. I may not be a big name (yet), but it doesnt mean Im going to sell myself short.
The result of all these queries though has been a closer look into what I should be charging. I dont want to charge for more than my name is worth (is stress the word name) and take advantage, but on what planet am I going to charge a measly $25 (£15.44) per
