Role Models: Then and Now
Albert Einstein by SoulOfDavid
There was a time when childhood heroes were real life human beings people dreamed of emulating when they “grew up.” There were sports heroes, famous astronauts, war heroes, political figures, the leaders of social and humanitarian causes, etc..
Then came “Star Trek” which is thought to be a prime mover behind student inte

"Your True Self" Contest - Entries from November 1st, 2011 to December 17th, 2011!
Hello to all!
Deviant's Gallery will soon be hosting a HUGE event! From November 1st to December 17th, we will be holding a series of mini-contests leading up to the finale, where the winner, voted on by the Deviantart community, wins a 1 year Premium Membership! To the best of my knowledge, a Contest like this has never been held before!
Each week, a form of media will be featured as part of the Contest. We will be starting with the "easier" to create media, as to give everyone a chance to participate. The Contest will be called "Your True Self." This holds several meanings, and is open to self-interpretation! Our 6 categories for the Contest are;
-Literature - November 1st to 8th
-Self Shots - November 9th to 16th
-Cosplay - November 17th to 24th
-Modeling - November 25th to December 1st

My Star Wars vs. Aliens storyI've been wanting to do this for a long time - and here it is at long last - my fan story/art featuring a confrontation between Darth Vader, a squad of Stormtroopers and a group of angry Alien Xenomorphs (and a surprise character also makes an appearance at the end!).My Star Wars vs. Aliens story11 months ago in Personal More Like This
This story ties together some of the pin-up pieces I've posted mashing up these two sci-fi franchises. I'm a big fan of them both - and this is my homage to them, as well as my hope that a meeting could someday find its way onto the big screen.
The set up for this story is as follows:
Following the fall of the Republic and rise of the Empire, Darth Vader continues to fall ever deeper into the abyss of the Dark Side of the Force. His efforts to enforce his master's will and lust for power lead him to delve further into the lore of the mysterious Sith.
Learning from his evil Emperor that former Sith apprentice, Darth Maul, had overcome a nest of Xenomorphs as a right of passage, Vader has search

Each Chapter’s End
Context is everything. The same photographs and paintings of airport terminals and train compartments and subway platforms that seem so cold and forbidding in contemplation of one’s traveling out into the world, somehow become reassuring in their hard functionality and durability – when thought of as the pathway to the journey back home. Faces of travelers photographed in airports often exhibit muted “Mona Lisa smiles,” masking the direction (to or away from home) that they are headed.

Movies featuring the latest in high tech digital effects, eye-popping CGI environments and ear-splitting surround sound, are often described as “pushing the envelope.” But they’re mega-million-dollar productions that are delivered back to the studios by the filmmakers precisely as pre-ordered. Rarely is there danger of disaster, so what envelope has been pushed?
“Envelope-shredder” might be a better designation for Brian Taylor...
Who, usually in collaboration with partner-in-mayhem Mark Neveldine, has given the world such films as Crank, Crank: High Voltage, Gamer, Pathology, and recently Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

A letter on religion, pornography, and business ethics written by an opinionated individual, inspired by a letter written by "two prominent public intellectuals - one a Christian, one a Muslim" - sent to hotel industry executives last week. ( See: The Public Discourse )
I write to ask you to stop offering religious programming on your in-room televisions and hosting religious texts (such as the Gideon's bible) in your company's hotels. I make no proposal here to limit your legal freedom, nor do I threaten protests, boycotts, or anything of the sort. I simply ask you to do what is right as a matter of conscience.
I am nobody of importance a private individual with my own opinion. I appeal on the basis of a commitment that should be shared by all people of reason and goodwill: a commitment to human dig
The Dining Philosophers - a ProblemEpicurus muttered, "None of this affects me at all," excused himself, and slipped out the back door practically unnoticed. That left the table unbalanced. On one side were the ancient worlders: Plato and Aristotle, heads together in deep discussion, and Socrates, who appeared to be gently questioning Miletus while Sextus Empiricus studiously withheld judgement on the proceedings. The opposite end of the table was mostly held by the enlightenment gang, with Lao-Tze as the sole outlier, holding down the farthest end of the table as he watched the proceedings, imperturbably. Voltaire had given up on his hopes of getting Lao-Tze to appreciate his witticisms, and shifted his focus to Rousseau, who was trying to hide behind the equally imperturbable bulk of David Hume. Neitzsche was berating Hume, loudly, and making wickedly poetic assertions that made Spinoza occasionally put his head down and "facepalm" though he quickly converted the gesture to what appeared to be a thoughtful forehead-rubThe Dining Philosophers - a Problem3 years ago in Personal More Like This

There’s a chill in the air as we travel to the kingdom of Arendelle for a Frozen cosplay treat.
Frozen was Disney’s tremendously successful third attempt at adapting the grimm Hans Christian Anderson tale The Snow Queen. As early as 1943, Walt Disney saw the potential in this the longest and most highly acclaimed of Andersen’s stories, but it to

The Witchas Multifaceted Icon
Throughout history artists of every discipline have been fascinated, inspired and transfixed at every historical stage of the shifting perceptions of the “Witch” in any given time or society. The seams within every page of every chapter written against or in defense of the witch have been alternatively filled with oppressive sexism, blind eyed religious bigotry, occult doctrine, fevered and forbidden lustful sexuality, misplaced fear, and reams of wide eyed superstition.
Consequently, the colors, and lines within every stroke upon every canvas and visceral depiction, carry all the burdensome weight of the long intricacies of this subject. With respect to this much maligned, religiously and politically repurposed, perpetually misunderstood subject

Congratulations to the Comics Industry!
Yes, folks, congratulations are in order. For years the comics industry has fought the never ending battle to prove to an uncaring world that comics weren’t just for kids. Thankfully there are now very few one–note heroes left, most of them now being heavily conflicted ‘Anti–Heroes’ who tread the morally gray area b

A Pop Culture Interpretation of The Supernatural
Every culture around the world created gods and other mythical beings by mixing and matching fanged and taloned animal parts—e.g., enormous eagle heads on lions’ bodies—human beings have always seemed to need to believe there are powerful and usually quite vengeful supernatural beings lurking just beyond the candlelight.
Supernatural beings come to serve several purposes:
They kept people on the lighted path of truth and goodness, fearful of exploring beyond;
They were a reminder of the punishment we deser

The vibrant digital paintings of alicexz are fiery, emotional, and incredibly memorable.
The colors of her creations (mostly portraits of popular TV and Film characters) are unusually vibrant, which is remarkable considering how layered they appear to be. It’s sort of like what manga characters might look like if painted by one of the Dutch Masters. And this artist exhibits just the right amount of quirkiness to leave us wanting to know more: she has a penchant for painting redheads. But, then of course, there’s a lot of red and golden fire burning through most her artworks.
Dropzone Commander / Battlestar GalacticaHad my first game of Dropzone Commander today and it was awesome as it had a unique but familiar gaming system, with the addition of the command cards, gave it a boost in my books. While it isn't exactly cheap, 1500 points is roughly £120, it has everything you need to get going from the starter armies until the 2 player starter box is released at the end of September; http://www.hawkwargames.com/products/2-player-starter-set Though I am looking forward to getting my Post Human Republic army up and running with the hopeful addition of the Hades Heavy Walker http://www.hawkwargames.com/products/hades-super-heavy-walkerDropzone Commander / Battlestar Galactica2 years ago in Personal More Like This

Dreams with helicopter and strange buildingsI've mentioned before that I seldom fly in my dreams, but I realize that's not quite accurate. Rather, as in this last dream I remember, my flying usually seems to be in some sort of aircraft instead of unsupported "Superman" style flying.Dreams with helicopter and strange buildings3 years ago in Personal More Like This
This time I flew across a city inside a sleek black helicopter with retractable wheels (although, weirdly, a helicopter which didn't make any sound and didn't seem to have obvious rotor blades). I appeared to be a guest of one of my sisters who had access to the nifty helicopter for work. A very interesting apartment building that we saw from the air resembled four cubes surrounding a central atrium with another cube atop the atrium. The flight continued over open spaces near a harbor area before the silent helicopter hovered next to one of the upper floors of a tall building and let us step out there. As part of a group, I then returned to the strange five-cube building and tried to determine wh
