Themed Fan Fiction Contest UPDATE May 15th - Just under a week left on this! All entries are due by 11:59 PM PST on May 21st, 2014. Any questions, please ask!
I enjoyed the Topsy Turvy Fan Fiction Contest so much, I decided to have more short fan fiction contests! I plan do one each month for the rest of my Volunteer term. Let the writing begin!
This month, the contest revolves around themes. I'll provide a list of ideas, and you choose one or more of them to include into your story. You do not need to include the sentence word for word, just its concept. Example: if you choose "Sins of the father," for your theme, you can write a fanfic about the crimes of a character's father coming to haunt that person.
Themes to choose from:
"Abandoned Places""All He/She Wanted Was a Cup of Coffee""A Beautiful Day for an Apocalypse""Be

Contest: Fan Art NouveauHello, everyone! It's time for another Fan Art contest. This time, we're asking participants to create Fan Art in Art Nouveau style.Contest: Fan Art Nouveau1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
What is Art Nouveau?
"Art Nouveau (French pronunciation: [aʁ nuvo], Anglicised to /ˈɑːrt nuːˈvoʊ/) or Jugendstil is an international philosophy and style of art, architecture and applied art—especially the decorative arts—that was most popular during 1890–1910. English uses the French name Art nouveau ("new art"), but the style has many different names in other countries. A reaction to academic art of the 19th century, it was inspired by natural forms and structures, not only in flowers and plants, but also in curved lines. Architects tried to harmonize with the natural environment.
Art Nouveau is considered a "total" art style, embracing architecture, graphic art, interior design, and most of the decorative arts including jewellery, furniture, textiles, household sil

Iiiiit's contest time! All original literature welcome.
This is a speculative fiction contest—the technology requirement could cover steampunk, 'John Carter,' 'The Windup Girl,' 'Watchmen,' '2001: A Space Odyssey' or about anything else you can think of. The one thing that isn't permissible is magic.
That was a joke.
Your story must center around the development of a relationship between two entities.
Some things to consider:What kind of relationship is it? (No, "relationship" doesn't have to mean "romance.")Who/what is it between? Is the development positive/negative?
The relationship must be noticeably changed at the end.Distance/death don't count if they're still besties or whatever.I don't mean changed personalities. I mean a changed relationship.
Plausible but (currently) nonexistent technology must be integral to the development of this relationship.Time travel goes forward.Nothing goes faster than light, a

This month at projecteducate a group of Community Volunteers have worked hard to create gallery description articles for almost every Gallery here on DeviantART. Throughout August we will be bringing you these articles covering the definitions of galleries from Photography to Photo-manipulation, Artisan Crafts to Digital Dolls. If you have any questions about where to submit your work here on DeviantART then this month will be your chance to ask. Just head over to projecteducate, send us a note or comment on one of the articles as and when they are posted.
A whole month of articles at projecteducate deserves a celebratory contest, so we're going to host one that will hopefully get your creative juices flowing! Since the aim of this month is to reduce mis-cats and help deviants re-classify their work correctly, we thought that a fitting them would be …
Original Quotes deviantWEAR Design Challenge!Original Quotes deviantWEAR Design Challenge!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
It's time for our next deviantWEAR Design Challenge, and this one is a little different. Writers, you play a crucial role! We're calling on deviants to create an original phrase, statement, or saying and transform these writings into an artistic and unique t-shirt design. Entries should display an imaginative phrase, expression, or statement as well as a beautiful presentation of the words in a "Design Typography" style.
We are not looking for famous quotes by historical figures, fictional characters, famous poets, and the like. Instead, we are excited to see designs and phrases in your very own words. So let your creative juices flow and share your inspiring words with the world! A picture tells a thousand words, but your typographical design for the "Original Quotes" entry will tell us even more!
Participation is easy!

Submissions ready for workshopping are below. It's time for all of us to read and comment. New submissions are still welcomed!
This month's Writer's Workshop focuses on concrete language in poetry, and specifically on the work of Dr. William Carlos Williams, an important modernist writer.
The Workshop Brief
This workshop will challenge you to write a short poem using primarily concrete language (language that describes things that can be experienced in the physical world with the senses, as opposed to abstract concepts like "love" or "sadness"). Williams summed up the importance of concrete language in a phrase he repeated often in his work: "No ideas but in things." This workshop is all about writing concrete, clear, and striking poetry.
First, read a good amount of Williams's poetry (links to the right); it's up to you how much that is, but the more, the betterWrite a poem influenced by Williams's styleYour piece must be a poem
Rewriting Cliches Fan Fiction ContestIt's the start of a new month, which means it time for July's Fan Fiction Contest!Rewriting Cliches Fan Fiction Contest10 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
We all now that we should avoid cliché phrases and imagery in our writing. Clichés make writing boring and predictable. Our job as writers is to hold the readers' interests. Clichés fail at that; we've heard them before, seen them written dozens of times, if not more. For intriguing writing, we must find unique, fresh ways to phrase what we wish to say.
For this contest, I am providing a list of common clichés that should be avoided like the plague (did you see what I did there?). Pick at least one cliché from that list and rewrite it into something fresh and unique. Your rewritten cliché should not resemble the original (for example, if my earlier, "avoided like the plague," was an entry, I could have used, "shunned like a leprous bear having a bad day"). You can make your rewording as long as you'd like, as some may require subtle wording and take longer to

The Triumph ProjectDr. Maya Angelou, a literary and cultural luminary, died this Wednesday. While glowing words have and will continue to be spoken about her talent, activism, and dauntless spirit, she is honored especially for her body of work. She took her own suffering and the suffering of others and, through her words, transfigured that suffering into triumphant art.The Triumph Project11 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Some of us in Community Relations invite you to participate in a new Project in remembrance of Dr. Angelou, one that grew out of a suggestion by Aeirmid. Together, we'll be creating art about triumph, be it personal, societal, or even hypothetical. At the end of the project, all deviations will be featured. This isn't a contest; it is a way for us to use our talents, following Dr. Angelou's example, to enrich our community.
What counts as triumphant? That's up to you. It could be a non-fiction biographical account of an historic leader, or an autobiographical poem about a personal moment of triumph.

Whenever you are part of something bigger bugs and glitches will always appear - for various reasons.
In such cases it is always good to be up to date. Even if a bug or glitch doesn't affect you now, it might could happen in the future. Or in case you experience it already you are aware that someone will take care of it then.

Why am I quoting Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame song lyrics? Perhaps because it's one of my favorite animated movies? Is it because it's April Fool's Day? Or maybe it's related to the contest I promised in the title?
Yes to all three!
To celebrate April Fool's Day, I invite you to write a short "topsy turvy" fan fiction! A topsy
Spirit Day 2012"Ultimately, I want Spirit Day to make just one person feel little bit better about his or herself, to feel safe enough in their own skin and to be proud of who they are" - Brittany McMillanSpirit Day 20123 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
In memory of the young LGBT people who lost their lives to suicide, Brittany encouraged her friends to wear purple on a day in October -- a day that came to be known as Spirit Day. Since then, GLAAD has helped turn Spirit Day into a global event that inspires millions of individuals, celebrities, TV personalities, media outlets, companies and schools to wear purple in a stand against bullying.
While Spirit Day does focus on the LGBT community, I believe that it's anti-bullying message is relevant to every community. It only get's better, if we take the pledge to make it so.

As many of you have noticed, the Literature gallery gets a huge influx of fan fiction submissions. We're hoping that by having Fan Fiction under the Literature umbrella, the number of miscats in the overall gallery will drop. And, for those of us who frequent both galleries, it'll simplify submitting and finding work.
Of course, we can't cut down on miscats without your help! Please spread the word by favoriting and sharing this journal, and by moving any of your own submissions as appropriate.
Not sure whether your submission counts as fan fiction? :faq572:
(Note that gallery updates for both Literature and Fan Fiction is in the works. Please continue to use the category that best fits your work.)
You're welcome to bring your concerns to us at any time!
