Tips on: How to make an original species?I got asked by a few people but I wrote out this response to jasper-chan's ask on my tumblr. since it's all written out I feel like it'd be at least somewhat appreciated to those who are curious of what I keep in mind while making an original species
WARNING it's a little messy but if you are confused then feel free to ask me questions I'll do my best to answer properly
In general I’d suggest to think "what physical characteristics should be involved with my species? and how can i make it unique?"
for a species to be a species (especially closed species) there should be at least some distinctive physical trait that they're born with.
imo it’s not a very good species if they can take off what would make them a species. for example, a group of kemonomimis that likes to wear a specific fashion is more of a culture than a species. I wouldn’t add their fashion into their main descrip

Why do OS owners get so protective of their species designs?
Okay so tell me, have you ever tried to make a cohesive, unique original species? It's not the easiest thing in the world to make a species design that stands out from the rest, it IS a difficult thing to accomplish, and more often then not if the person is taking time to draw and develop a species, it's something they're attached to, proud of, it's a product of their hard work. It is utterly devastating when you spend that much time and effort on something and care about it so much, and someone who admires your work and wants to do something similar uses your design as a step-stool so that they don't have to do as much work. Now I know it's not always th
The art of improvement5/4/2015 UPDATE: Added preface at the beginning and Inspiration at the end! added some thoughts on some other things I wanted to share. The art of improvement1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Alright, so this is a comment and question I've been receiving a lot from people!
How did you improve so fast?
Firstly, I want to say I do not think of myself as a professional artist, teacher or someone who "knows the secret to becoming a master artist". These are just things that I have picked up over the years, and noticed so I thought I might as well share my experience with improvement in effort to help others find their own paths of improvement and learning as artists. There are still many things I have to learn, and wish to improve about my own art! The path of an artist is never ending, in my opinion!
I consider the beginning of my journey when I withdrew from college. I had decided to take a year off from school, to explore myself more as a person, gain confidence and rethink my path that I wanted to take in school. Of course,
How to start getting commissionsBecause under pricing is the wrong way to go about it, and maybe instead of telling people that under pricing is bad/wrong, I think it would be FAR more useful to give them ways to help them get commissions. How to start getting commissions5 months ago in Personal More Like This
I don't know everything, but I've learned quite a lot about it over the years, if you have more tips PLEASE do comment and so I can add to the list/guide. Also, it would be super nice if you find this helpful, that you would share to help other artists out there. c:
Also note, that this won't make you a commissioning madman within a few days, things take time, and no one can tell how much time it will take you to do so.
But first off, the order this journal goes in:
+ Getting a commissioning audience
+ Starting off small
+ Things to help you get even more commissions
Getting a Commissioning Audience
The thing it seems most people ignore when it comes to getting commissions, just because you have a lot of watches (let's say you have around 300) doesn't mean y

Please share this if you like it by posting a journal or a poll linking to this. Spread the word and the awareness to both buyers and sellers!
I've been asked a couple times already about how I price my commissions. Often, I think it's because I tend to price my work higher than a lot of other artists, yet people are still willing to buy. I think this journal will sum things up quite nicely (from my personal viewpoints.)
A Brief Econ Class
So how do I price, then?Frequent Concerns
My philosophy for pricing art is actually best illustrated by the opening page of this chapter of AKB49 (a manga based off of popular idol group AKB48).
So what does this mean? "Because... it really is delicious" represents the idea that something can be sold for a higher price because demand is high. Time for a quick economics class!
Does talent exist?I know many people have different opinions about this. And here's what i think of it and why. I'll just answer the journal question up front, I think talent does not exist. And here's why:Does talent exist?4 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Let's start with he question, what is talent? It's this magical thing that makes some people learn faster and develop faster than others in different fields. Let's take art for example, there are 2 different artists, both start at the same time to learn a concept and one learns faster than the other. But few people have stopped to ask themselves why that is? Is it talent, or is it something else?
Let me tell you a story about a guy who started an experiment to see if talent exists. He posted an add where he stated he's looking for a wife that will agree to marry him and let him test their children in this experiment. And they made 3 girls. The guy taught them all how to lay chess from a very early age, and lo and behold all of them became grandmasters in chess. This story is real, the guy is
Okay [species rant]I feel like I should just warn people about somethingOkay [species rant]6 months ago in Personal More Like This
Original species can be a super fun thing to get into! The very creative ones especially, I am very fond of
Now, I personally don't give two shits if you want to take a dog, give it a theme and put things on it, and call it a closed species, I honestly don't, as long as you aren't attacking people for having similar ideas on such a basic concept, this goes for any 'raw/basic' species design. I've said something about this in the past here.
However I feel like you guys should know, you should really stray away from raw/basic species designs because lately some people are getting very irritated by them and if you have one, you will likely be judged as 'oh another person with those uncreative species' and people may even get violent. I do not want people to fight over something so silly.
As always I encourage you guys to
New Program: MischiefSo there's this program called Mischief that I feel like not a lot of people may know about right now. I only know about it thanks to my tumblr dashboard.New Program: Mischief1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Hmm, to talk about it would be easier in bullet points so let's get to that.
Infinite canvas, resolution, and dimension. It's all specialized textured vector so no matter how small you draw you can export it to a .psd or .jpg of ANY RESOLUTION AND ANY DIMENSION which is pretty fucking amazing and helps those people who can't handle heavy programs or preset resolutions like in SAI or Photoshop.
It's like drawing on paper. Like to me it's really forgiving paper. The select tool is pretty much like a canvas cropping device-- you select and then you can export the selected area as the cropped image. Otherwise it doesn't do nice things like resize, scale, or rotate. (Just yet anyway, I think they're still developing.) So it's a good practice tool.
It's really smooth and pleasant to draw
Want more commissions? This journal is for artists who want to get more commissions, or want to open commissions and never had so they don't know how best to present their art, or even for those artists who took commissions before but would appreciate some more tipsWant more commissions?4 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
There are a few pretty important things to consider before publicly announcing you're opening commissions:
1. payment method. The deviantart commission widget takes 20% of your profit, but then again more deviants have points so you're likely to get 20% more customers like that. But don't forget there are people who have paypal and don't feel like dealing with points so if you decide to open commissions through deviantart, don't let that be the ONLY payment method.
Paypal is the most common payment method used online and i strongly recommend it. Make a paypal account, connect it to a card and you're ready. But don't forget paypal has a limit of $3000 per year withdrawal. So if you're serious about drawing art for a living and you

How do snipe guards work? / What are snipe guards?Hi, I'm just writing this journal so I can make it a clickable link for people new to auctioning in my future adopts! :icondignitylaughplz:How do snipe guards work? / What are snipe guards?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
A snipe guard basically means the auction will be extended by x amount of time until the bidding stops; for example, an auction could end at 10:00pm and the snipe guard is 1 hour. So anyone bidding in the last few minutes of 10:00 pm would have to hold the highest bid for an entire hour, and if no one bids during that hour the adopt is theirs. They can place the bid at 9:59pm and the auction won't close until 10:59pm. Of course, if no one bids last minute, the auction ends as usual at 10:00pm.
If someone bids during that extended hour, they must add on another hour. (a bid placed at 10:10 would extend the auction until 11:10; so basically bid as high as you want the first time so you don't have to drag it out till late at night)
Snipe guards are a chance for anyone who has been stalking an adopt to be "guarded" fro

She's on a vacation now, and every other day she wakes up before me and goes on our terrace/balcony, trying to get that perfect bronze tan.
I work late, so she usually lets me sleep an hour or two longer. Today was not that day.
- "Hey love, there's a puddle of water on the balcony. It seems that AC is leaking."
New quest available: Fix the leaking AC.
Identifying the problem.
For those of you not familiar with this type of air conditioner, it's a 4x3x1' box, hanging about 7 feet above the floor, with a hose going from it to the roof drain to remove excess condensate. I went to the terrace, looked at the puddle of water, briefly inspected the AC box, and saw that the hose fitting on the box was a bit lose and that it was probably the cause for the leakage. I've decided that it's not a huge issue, and that it can be fixed with some duct tape.
On to get some duct tape.
I know I had some. Somewhere.
Here? Nope, not here.

Making an Orig. Species - FAQ and GuideOkay, so I have gotten numerous notes and comments asking me for critiques and suggestions on their up-n-coming original species'.Making an Orig. Species - FAQ and Guide5 months ago in Personal More Like This
Now, a lot of you guys out there are probably saying,
"Ugh what's she trying to say her dogs are just fat with swirl tailz!11"
Well, that may be, but if they were really as plain as a fat, swirly tailed anthro, they probably wouldn't sell as well nor be renowned for the traits that set them apart from the rest, which I'll delve into later.
So, here are some tips to creating something fun, successful (if you put in the work), and original!
For starters, pick an animal or creature to base your species off of.
Pick an animal you don't see used too often, OR pick something you KNOW you can give original traits.
What I mean by the above statement, is that if you pick a common animal, like a dog or cat, and basing them off of drinks or biomes (desert, forest, beaches), ec
closed species![wish keepers]edit: changed their names to wish keepers since there was already a species called wishlings!///w\\\\closed species![wish keepers]3 weeks ago in Personal More Like This
Wish keepers are creatures born out of a wishing star and their only purpose is to deliver the wish that was made upon that star. It is said that a wish keeper is born from the soul of a human that have died but still wishes to live on, and if that wish is strong enough they will be given a second chance but the catch is in order to make their wish come true they have to make other peoples wish come true first.
in order to get reincarnated a wish keeper need to deliver 5 wishes to people that have made a wish on a star. Each time they complete a mission a star will appear on their tail indicating the missions completion. Every wish keeper starts off with 1 star mark on its tail (which indicates their own wish). they can have a maximum of 6 star marks on their tail. Once they've gotten the 6th mark the wish keeper will be asked whether it still wa

btw if any one of u get someone spewing out "high price" bs, tell me and i will fight them for u
holy shit I want to fight somebody, somebody fight me because it hasnt even been a good three months until I see some child walk into someone's commission prices thinking that they're entitled to their art like its a luxury made specifically for their own pleasure. Like woah its unbelievable how much fervor a fucking child can put into their comments on a journal post reinforcing their opinion about "too high a price" over and over and over again. Just grinds my gears.
Like.. artists need to make a living? You have no say in how much they can price their work? You need to understand that art takes a while and it's worth whatever the artist thinks it's worth? And that clients who buy their work deem it worth their money?
Ive seen arguments about popularity being the "SAD REASON" of why prices are s

Do you do trades? Not anymore really!
CAN YOU DRAW ME SOMETHING?? No sorry! Time is money
commissions? check my journals or the link on my profile.
How long have I been pixeling?
-Since late 2011.
How do you achive such soft looking shading on your pixels? Do you stick only to the pencil/fill tools, or do you utilize brushes?
Or do you just use enough colors to make it blend nicely?
-OPACITY there I spilled the beans countless times now.. opacity with the pencil tool. It just helps me finish pixels faster and keeps me in touch with my painterly-side lol.
I DONT USE THE DAMN BRUSH TOOL. JUST LEARN TO USE THE PENCIL TOOL'S OPACITY SETTINGS. ITS AMAZING...
smooths everything out. but leaves it pixelated. If you use the brush tool. im pretty sure its gonna look blurry
What program do you use?
-photoshop cs3, I suggest you learn photoshop cuz I love it/plus its free lol
What inspires you to make pixel art/ how did you get into pixel art?
Why People UnwatchIt's come to my attention that most journals and polls that talk about unwatching, on my feed at least, is usually venting annoyance or other forms of discomfort at the fact that someone has unwatched an account. It makes a few people I know uncomfortable when people unwatch them, whether it's long-later or immediately after. That's why I asked, in a poll, for the other side of the story: why do you unwatch people? Why People Unwatch2 months ago in Personal More Like This
You can find the poll here: http://nyanfood.deviantart.com/journal/poll/4762451/
This will be the first time in a long time that I address many comments using a single post rather than addressing each comment individually. There was such a fast and enthusiastic outpouring of participation that I came back to 40 comments on the poll topic at first glance, and almost every one of them has at least one solid paragraph. The amount of thought put into the discussion is inspiring! I'm glad to be honored with so many intellectually interested watchers!

Critiquing, do's and dont'sSo i almost always request critiques on my art, and i also get a lot of them too (thank you so much guys/galls) and i've noticed some critiquers have some misconceptions about critiques, their role, how to do it, etc.Critiquing, do's and dont's2 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Now i don't want to critique someone's critiuque, i rarely do that because people take it as being defensive about the art that is critiqued. So i'll just make this journal to hopefully inform/educate some of you about critiquing.
-If an artist requests critiques, and you have something to say about it then do use the critique widget to leave a critique. Don't critique in the comment's section though. I know some of you are more shy, but if you're bold enough to write a critique then put it in its proper place, that's what the widget is fore. This does not apply to artists who do not have a premium and can't requests critiques through the widget.
-Do read the artists comments on the artwork first. They might offer hints on what
