Tips on: How to make an original species?I got asked by a few people but I wrote out this response to jasper-chan's ask on my tumblr. since it's all written out I feel like it'd be at least somewhat appreciated to those who are curious of what I keep in mind while making an original species
WARNING it's a little messy but if you are confused then feel free to ask me questions I'll do my best to answer properly
In general I’d suggest to think "what physical characteristics should be involved with my species? and how can i make it unique?"
for a species to be a species (especially closed species) there should be at least some distinctive physical trait that they're born with.
imo it’s not a very good species if they can take off what would make them a species. for example, a group of kemonomimis that likes to wear a specific fashion is more of a culture than a species. I wouldn’t add their fashion into their main descrip

Now, a lot of you guys out there are probably saying,
"Ugh what's she trying to say her dogs are just fat with swirl tailz!11"
Well, that may be, but if they were really as plain as a fat, swirly tailed anthro, they probably wouldn't sell as well nor be renowned for the traits that set them apart from the rest, which I'll delve into later.
So, here are some tips to creating something fun, successful (if you put in the work), and original!
For starters, pick an animal or creature to base your species off of.
Pick an animal you don't see used too often, OR pick something you KNOW you can give original traits.
What I mean by the above statement, is that if you pick a common animal, like a dog or cat, and basing them off of drinks or biomes (desert, forest, beaches), ec

Why do OS owners get so protective of their species designs?
Okay so tell me, have you ever tried to make a cohesive, unique original species? It's not the easiest thing in the world to make a species design that stands out from the rest, it IS a difficult thing to accomplish, and more often then not if the person is taking time to draw and develop a species, it's something they're attached to, proud of, it's a product of their hard work. It is utterly devastating when you spend that much time and effort on something and care about it so much, and someone who admires your work and wants to do something similar uses your design as a step-stool so that they don't have to do as much work. Now I know it's not always th

REFRAIN FROM CALLING IT 'object-animal'.
BECAUSE EVEN IF IT IS THE COMBINATION OF THOSE TWO THINGS, NAMING IT SUCH A BROAD NAME MAKES YOU COME FAR TOO CLOSE TO MAKING IT A CLOSED FEATURE
(What's a closed FEATURE? read this for better clarification ;v; http://fav.me/d7iorsm )
But what else am I supposed to name it?
GIVE IT IT'S OWN NAME. MAKE IT IT'S OWN THING.
I could have taken my Illumicutum species and called them Solar-turtles. Now anyone who creates a turtle mixed with a solar fixture will get hated on because they 'copied' what I did, even if it had been done before.
Instead of doing that, I called them Illumicutum, and I took their species further than just a solar panel combined with a turtle. I made it so at night they radiate patterns from their solar shells they collected during the day. I made them nocturnal. I made them sleep outside during the day sunbathing, and made it

Original species can be a super fun thing to get into! The very creative ones especially, I am very fond of
Now, I personally don't give two shits if you want to take a dog, give it a theme and put things on it, and call it a closed species, I honestly don't, as long as you aren't attacking people for having similar ideas on such a basic concept, this goes for any 'raw/basic' species design. I've said something about this in the past here.
However I feel like you guys should know, you should really stray away from raw/basic species designs because lately some people are getting very irritated by them and if you have one, you will likely be judged as 'oh another person with those uncreative species' and people may even get violent. I do not want people to fight over something so silly.
As always I encourage you guys to

There is no "right way" to make a species. There are TONS of variables that might affect your success (in sales). Nothing here should be taken literally. It's only my opinion & personal methods!
Not in it for Money
I DO NOT recommend people make an OS for the specific reason that they want to make money.
It's fine to want a little bit of spending money or something in the mindset of a little side-project. But if you go into this market with the expectation of making a living & supporting yourself off of this?
You're very likely to be disappointed, cause yourself unnecessary stress, and possibly make yourself feel like a failure, when you absolutely are not.

I'll explain a thing. When it comes to original species, the most appeal (for me at least, and I know I'm not alone) comes from how much of the creators have been put into the design. YOU are unique: the way you think, the things you like, the way you were raised, your inspirations, your fears, your values, and THAT is what makes a species 'original', it's you. So with this in mind, when you make a species focusing purely on what everyone else wants (even if what people want is something that falls into their subjective idea of 'unique') can drain that you-ness out of the design, they feel so hallow. They can sometimes be saved through developing them more, putting more of yourself into them. However, sometimes that process is too stre

Alright, so this is a comment and question I've been receiving a lot from people!
How did you improve so fast?
Firstly, I want to say I do not think of myself as a professional artist, teacher or someone who "knows the secret to becoming a master artist". These are just things that I have picked up over the years, and noticed so I thought I might as well share my experience with improvement in effort to help others find their own paths of improvement and learning as artists. There are still many things I have to learn, and wish to improve about my own art! The path of an artist is never ending, in my opinion!
I consider the beginning of my journey when I withdrew from college. I had decided to take a year off from school, to explore myself more as a person, gain confidence and rethink my path that I wanted to take in school. Of course,

Please share this if you like it by posting a journal or a poll linking to this. Spread the word and the awareness to both buyers and sellers!
I've been asked a couple times already about how I price my commissions. Often, I think it's because I tend to price my work higher than a lot of other artists, yet people are still willing to buy. I think this journal will sum things up quite nicely (from my personal viewpoints.)
A Brief Econ Class
So how do I price, then?Frequent Concerns
My philosophy for pricing art is actually best illustrated by the opening page of this chapter of AKB49 (a manga based off of popular idol group AKB48).
So what does this mean? "Because... it really is delicious" represents the idea that something can be sold for a higher price because demand is high. Time for a quick economics class!
Creating Original SpeciesSo, hello and welcome, once again, to one of my long-as-longcat text tutorials. This one here is going to be on the creation of original species. Unlike my other tutorials, this one is going to be better organized and hopefully make more sense, although, like all my other tutorials, it's going to be more a guide, than anything else. After all, you might not like, or even have to follow, everything I do, though I hope I can at least lay down a good path for you to follow, least you decide you want to follow it at all.Creating Original Species3 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
For this tutorial here, I will be using one of my own, nearly-original species, my biological vampires. These are simple characters, more humanoid than anything, and a very good springboard for showing one what developing an original species can do for you, your story, or anything else you plan on using these species on. Along the way, though, I will also be stating things that might apply outside my vampire species, and might apply to your species. Whether you use them or

Adoptables, Original Species Confusion(What follows is my own, personal opinion and is not to be considered a rule in any way, shape or form.)Adoptables, Original Species Confusion2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Lately many people have asked me an opinion about their new Original Species, or about Original Species in general, so I decided to do a Journal about it. Hopefully it will clear up some things for you.
First of all no Original Species is truly original.
To some, this might come as a surprise because why call something original if it's not? It's not truly original because, like it or not, inspiration has to come from somewhere. The 'magic' about OS is that, if an artist is careful enough, you don't notice the inspiration, you only have a vague tickling in the back of your head that tells you that that is familiar but you can't place it.
Mixing all your inspirations is quite important to avoid one of the most common mistakes in the adoptables world, creating a chimera and treating it like an OS.
Before all of you surge at me, yelling and screamin

I don't know everything, but I've learned quite a lot about it over the years, if you have more tips PLEASE do comment and so I can add to the list/guide. Also, it would be super nice if you find this helpful, that you would share to help other artists out there. c:
Also note, that this won't make you a commissioning madman within a few days, things take time, and no one can tell how much time it will take you to do so.

Hmm, to talk about it would be easier in bullet points so let's get to that.
Infinite canvas, resolution, and dimension. It's all specialized textured vector so no matter how small you draw you can export it to a .psd or .jpg of ANY RESOLUTION AND ANY DIMENSION which is pretty fucking amazing and helps those people who can't handle heavy programs or preset resolutions like in SAI or Photoshop.
It's like drawing on paper. Like to me it's really forgiving paper. The select tool is pretty much like a canvas cropping device-- you select and then you can export the selected area as the cropped image. Otherwise it doesn't do nice things like resize, scale, or rotate. (Just yet anyway, I think they're still developing.) So it's a good practice tool.
It's really smooth and pleasant to draw

How do snipe guards work? / What are snipe guards?Hi, I'm just writing this journal so I can make it a clickable link for people new to auctioning in my future adopts! :icondignitylaughplz:How do snipe guards work? / What are snipe guards?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
A snipe guard basically means the auction will be extended by x amount of time until the bidding stops; for example, an auction could end at 10:00pm and the snipe guard is 1 hour. So anyone bidding in the last few minutes of 10:00 pm would have to hold the highest bid for an entire hour, and if no one bids during that hour the adopt is theirs. They can place the bid at 9:59pm and the auction won't close until 10:59pm. Of course, if no one bids last minute, the auction ends as usual at 10:00pm.
If someone bids during that extended hour, they must add on another hour. (a bid placed at 10:10 would extend the auction until 11:10; so basically bid as high as you want the first time so you don't have to drag it out till late at night)
Snipe guards are a chance for anyone who has been stalking an adopt to be "guarded" fro

I will update this with more tricks as we go on! I've been using SAI for several years and continue to find new shortcuts. Also it bugs me when artists don't use shortcuts, so the time they spend searching for the right button is time wasted and not improving B(
Hold CTRL and click to jump to layer:
- Hold CTRL and drag to move whatever's on that layer!
- Hold CTRL and click and you will automatically jump to that layer! (Some versions of SAI uses ctrl+ shift, try it out!)
- Hold CTRL over a colored area and a little tag will appear next to your cursor that shows the name of that layer!
Go to View> New for a little viewfinder
- If you want to see what your artwork looks like, at 100% or whatever zoom you like (other than from the little navigator which is very tiny), you can set your canvas to windows
PracticeBy now everybody already knows that becoming a good artist doesn't come from talent alone. On contrary; talent is a myth. Like the famous quote goes: "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration". Meaning so much that even with a good idea and a bright mind, you still have to work your ass off in order to achieve something. While this makes mad skills available for basically everybody, I still hear many people complain about practice being a rather boring thing, or about them practicing a lot but still getting nowhere.Practice1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
So I thought; Oh well... Why no article about practice?
Conscious vs unconscious practice
First of all lets divide practice in roughly two types. You have the conscious type of practice. This is the kind of practice in which you're sitting down and thinking to yourself "Hell yeah! I'm gonna draw some <subject> today to get better at this!". And then there's the unconscious type of practice. The type of practice that is often more playful an

How do you come up with designs?
Thinking of designs can be very difficult, especially since almost everything has been done before. However, there are still plenty of waves to get your brain-juice flowing for new ideas! The thing is, most artists get inspiration from the following sources:
Google Images (and Pintrest): You might be surprised but it is always a good idea to search up a simple key word you would like your adopt to be based on like, "Panda Hat. " You will get thousands of different types of panda hats. Once your eyes and brain see the possibilities, you will quickly start developing ideas. However, if you dont get any ideas, just search up "Kawaii clothes". There are so many cute things on that web search, its overwhelming. Now, I am not saying copy anything, this is just for inspiration. ONLY INSPIRATION.
Want more commissions? This journal is for artists who want to get more commissions, or want to open commissions and never had so they don't know how best to present their art, or even for those artists who took commissions before but would appreciate some more tipsWant more commissions?1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
There are a few pretty important things to consider before publicly announcing you're opening commissions:
1. payment method. The deviantart commission widget takes 20% of your profit, but then again more deviants have points so you're likely to get 20% more customers like that. But don't forget there are people who have paypal and don't feel like dealing with points so if you decide to open commissions through deviantart, don't let that be the ONLY payment method.
Paypal is the most common payment method used online and i strongly recommend it. Make a paypal account, connect it to a card and you're ready. But don't forget paypal has a limit of $3000 per year withdrawal. So if you're serious about drawing art for a living and you
