Photographs and paintings of stars occupy that category of things you know are so, and yet it’s not quite possible to believe. One example is radio or television “signals” traveling in “waves” through the air, only to be reassembled for your listening or viewing pleasure in your living room radio or TV. Looking at clusters of stars lighting up the night sky like massive storm clouds, it’s impossible to think of those stars, those points of light, as separate massive burning suns, even though I know it’s so. Sometimes the most powerful magic requires no deception at all. The natural universe is more mystifying in its sheer

Mad Dogs and Englishmen
Joe Cocker died on December 22nd after a battle with lung cancer.
There are artists whose art you admire and enjoy. And then there are artists whose art fuses with your soul and becomes forever part of who you are. Joe’s singing was this latter sort of art for people in this singer's generation.
There’s a lot Joe achieved as a singer. He had his share of hits, awards, recorded film and TV theme tracks, but that doesn’t mean much when you’re dead. What matters is that your music moved people. That those people remember and have kept passing down the feeling they had when they first heard your voice

In A Maze
Most of the mazes in our gallery are of the outdoor garden variety. At least the “contestant” seeking escape from these mazes has the sun’s position to anchor their own movements. Indoor mazes are more difficult, with the addition of overlapping hallways, mirrored walls and ceilings and total darkness being possible components. Whose idea of “fun” was this, anyway?

What is it about human nature that draws us to puzzles?
Our minds are trained by aeons of evolution to look for patterns. Puzzles are merely patterns that have been rearranged, scrambled. The moment that we realize this, we immediately want to restore order, to put the pattern back together properly with everything in its right place. Our brains are sometimes logical to a fault, and when thin

NYC Subway: It’s a love-hate thing…
57th Street Subway station
New Yorkers have maintained their love-hate relationship with the subway system for over a hundred years.
The first pneumatic subway train in NYC ran on Feb. 26, 1887. The subway defines everything good and everything bad about life in the city. What could be more stimulating and life-affirming than hopping on an early morning freshly cleaned and de-graffitied subway car, packed w

So You're a Renderer Now!This is another opinion piece for me to pothole back to from the DAZ forums. As such, it doesn't apply to many of you who will read it first. This is just a brief discussion of some facts that the DAZ Studio rendering newbie may not know and may not think to ask.So You're a Renderer Now!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
1. Learn lighting first. If you're noticing that your renders tend to look terrible compared to other people's renders, the answer is not "buy more products," it's "learn to light your scene." Learn to use UberEnvironment and the Advanced Ambient and Advanced Spotlight products. The latter two do cost money, but it pays massive dividends in what you can do with it. Look at Ready to Render scenes that came with your copy of DAZ Studio and fiddle about with settings to see what works and what doesn't (the Quick Start Guide is your friend, and yes, I know most of you hate reading but I am dead serious, READ THE QUICK START GUIDE). This will also save you a lot of endless fiddling wi

[Tutorial] Seamless Texture Painting In Blender[October 2014 edit: In the current version, Blender's texture painting is severely laggy on many systems, making it nearly unusable. The devs seem to be working to fix it. I'm afraid I've had to mostly switch to Zbrush and 3d Coat in the meantime; but this tutorial will hopefully work for those who have no options, or when it's been fixed.][Tutorial] Seamless Texture Painting In Blender2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I just found out this was possible, so I did some quick proof-of-concept work and am now prepared to share it. This is more for content creators than the casual user, but if you're interested in getting into our market but can't afford 3dCoat, Zbrush, or other more expensive painting apps, this is absolutely for you.
Blender has been able to do texture painting for a long time, but initially it was only with generated textures or plain color painting, and for some while it could not paint across the seams of multiple UVs on one object, making it useless for character painting of DAZ figures. Well, that is no longer the case.&

Back when it was common knowledge that the sun and all the planets revolved around our Earth, the phenomena of solar and lunar eclipses were mysterious and terrifying occurrences. Were the gods unhappy with us? Were these heavenly messages indicating the End of Days had arrived? Emperors and kings often felt a familial connection with the Sun, and so feared its temporary withdrawal from the sky to be a warning of its unhappiness with royal actions. Desp
[Tutorial] DAZ Studio Crashing in Property Editor? This has been coming up on the forums, so I wanted to have a tutorial in place for it.[Tutorial] DAZ Studio Crashing in Property Editor?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Morphing the TriAx generation of figures in DAZ Studio is easier than any previous generation or program, so it's something even a casual user might want to try sometime. Sometimes you will need to access Property Editor on these figures, especially when you want to create your own morphs with adjusted skeletal values. That's when you will find out that doesn't take long to get enough morphs onto your G2F to get her crashing Property Editor on switching tabs, let along G1 with its massive, massive morph list.
Devs inform us on the forum that the newest beta of Studio makes this less of an issue, but meantime, one of the best ways to deal with this is content directory hot-switching.
Here's what you do.
Install a base Genesis only (or Starter Essentials, if that's what you've got) to a different folder than your main library, let's call it My Library 2.

Realistic looking skin in DAZ - FAQSo many times I am asked about the skins I make for my characters and how I get those to look realistic, especially for the fantasy races. I am a lazy person and don´t want to write the same answers again and again , so I might as well write a little journal about it. This is no tutorial and does not claim to be a complete collection of all the useful things when creating skin for DAZ... but it might help a few people to get the extra little something into their skin maps and shaders.Realistic looking skin in DAZ - FAQ2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Look around when you are among people!
Yup, this is where it all starts. Look at people, look at different skin colors around you, look at all the details, look at reference pictures and close ups of peoples skin. Like this you can get an idea of what you want to achieve. I ALWAYS look at peoples skin (and hair) so I can learn what happens with different lights, where there is bumbs and color differences. Haha, I bet people think I am a scary weird lady who stares at

To touch the face of God…
Until the manned spaceflights of the 1960s let humanity “slip the surly bonds of earth,” the closest one could get to the heavens was Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world. Dark, Horror, Macabre? Dark In Photomanipulation"A work of art is the unique result of a unique temperament. All true artists, whether they know it or not, create from a place of no-mind, from inner stillness," WildChildxOxDark, Horror, Macabre? Dark In Photomanipulation2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
As an artist, I have always had an open mind concerning art styles, art techniques, and various themes in art. Therefore, when I'm browsing deviantArt for hours each week I see a variety of different deviations. Often, as I am skimming the thumbs flashing before me for something specific, it happens. A deviation grips me from within and interferes with my searching. It's often emotive, with an eerie chill to it, and the dark is hiding something I may not want to find. Others are so intense with elements of the unreal that I don't dare enter, and some are emerged in unnatural vibrant light. For me, they are the essence of beauty.
I feel as if I'm not being drawn to them, but that they are drawn to me; it's as if I could step into the scene to become part of it.
At these times, I s
Complications with CompositionI love seeing results on the camera screen, and through the lens. Often after I've taken a photo, I can't wait to get home and see it on the computer screen too. But my pet peeve is the maths and numbers behind getting it spot on. I can't deal with that, I loathe it, and actually it takes the fun out of Photography (for me anyway!) I know that some people love the technical details, I think that's why TouchedD and I work so well - he does the figuring out, I do the seeking for the shot - but if you're purely a creative type with no passion for delving into technicalities then hopefully this article will be able to help you.Complications with Composition3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
You will find countless articles, tips, tutorials and theories on Composition. Many will throw advice and instruction at you before you can even press the shutter on your camera. In truth though, it can be much more basic than that. Before you take a photograph, think about why you're taking the shot. I know this doesn't work everytime, because often (like me)

Even I, as I planned to resign before even knowing about the announcement from Nintendo, felt disappointed to see Hatena go. I knew it meant a lot to the animation community, because even though I had to leave, it still meant a lot to me as well. I still wish I could talk with all my friends and admirers, and hear what they thought of my newest AMV or Hatena Wolves that had taken me days upon weeks to finally finish. I miss it. Hatena was a huge part of my life as an artist, and I will never forget it.
There were good times, and bad, as you all know. Despite the thieves, false reporters, star beggars, and haters, we sill found reasons to come together as a family and encourage and lift each other up when we tried our best to make something worthwhile out of our art. We cheered for our friends as we saw their flipnotes on the Most Popular page, encouraged those who were struggling, and
