Devious Journal EntryJust a little note...
When you see an artist you like and you are trying to figure his work out... the question that gets asked a lot is" How did you do it?"
What software did you use to make this effect?
What is your technique?
These are questions that won't get you anywhere. It's like asking for the fish.
A question you should probably ask is WHY did you do this?.. WHAT were you thinking?
When you ask this question, you are thinking about the principles of fishing, and not just about catching A fish.
If you wonder why, then you won't be stuck with the HOW.. you will most probably create your own "HOW", your own method of putting your WHY into existence..and this is what will really make you unique.
Once again.. this is just my take on things.
My Two cents on Portfolio ReviewsYou know, I see quite a bit of portfolio on a regular basis, and even more so when I go to comic con and CTN.My Two cents on Portfolio Reviews2 years ago in Personal More Like This
This time around was the same thing, I saw quite a few portfolios. Some good ones and some that miss the mark.
There were a few in particular that caught my eye.. a few extremely good ones, and a few that just didn't work, and I wanted to try and share my opinions about portfolios in general.
This is just my point of view, based on MY experience and definitely not a definitely law, rule, or "must do". Just what I noticed in many student's and young professional's portfolios.
The first thing that strikes me is how similar portfolios can be from one student to another..I can almost always tell when one student is from Art Center, San Jose State, Otis, Sheridan or any other major school. It's a good thing and a bad thing. Mainly a bad thing though
Just a few personal thoughts on portfolios since I just came back from comic con and saw a ton over there.
Your portfolio should be a r

I'd probably not recommend you try to emulate my style or my way or working.
What I would recommend though is that you try to go outside and sketch, sketch people in the street, people walking, sitting, getting up, taking off their clothes or putting them back on, people hugging, people fighting, people in conversation in a group, people on the bus, swimming, dancing, eating, ( lot's of eating as it is pretty hard to convey exactly the feeling of eating), sleeping, people thinking... If you want to tell stories, most of your images should have people thinking.. that's what is going to make your images come alive.
Use a tablet if you have one, a sharpie, a pastel, a rock dipped in ink..anything that can make a mark.
The tool is cool, but secondary.. first.. you n
Instagram Can Sell Your Photos Without Paying YouEDIT 19/12/12: Instagram has responded.Instagram Can Sell Your Photos Without Paying You2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Though the language they use seems to want to overly passify rather than address issues. "Your photos are your photos and we respect that." is a nice sentiment but does not necessarily exclude "we have the right to license and use your stuff even though you own the content" By signing up to instagram you are giving them permission to do this even though you do technically own the content you are submitting.
I'm not going to flail my arms about doom, but I will say, artists be aware. Not just about this, but about any contracts you sign. There is some real sketchy language in the fine print here that needs to be clarified or changed as of right now. More than just an "everything's fine, don't worry" letter. Company lawyers have a tendency to try to take the largest chunk of whatever they can, and only back off when their actions are made public and they ar
Quick way to make perfect perspective grids.Hey everyone, I just put up a new video on how to create physically accurate perspective grids in 2 minutes or less. Request raffle is closed, sorry!Request raffle is closed, sorry!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I get a ton of messages from people asking for requests, and it gets overwhelming very quickly.
So this will make it easier for me to deal with requests. Like, MUCH MUCH EASIER.
So here's how it works...
1 Message me saying you want to join.
2 I will add you to a list of people.
3 Every person will have their name written on a piece of paper. Let's call them tickets.
4 At the end of the month (or whenever I do it) I will draw one ticket. This will be recorded and uploaded to Youtube so you know it's legit.
5 Whoever's name gets drawn, gets a free art request.
Anyone can enter (though it could be a much more meaningful raffle if you follow me)
[Bullet; Red] You can enter the raffle every month. (Unless you were picked)

The confusion in my mind about anime and art.===============The confusion in my mind about anime and art.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Hi there, Haven't updated my journal in a while, I hope everyone is alright and live a happy life.
Let's me get straight to the point. sorry If my remaining ego have driven me to type something stupid, But at least I'm being honest to you, I also wanted to practice writing long essay in English too.
I'm always open for your critique and suggestion, But please write it in a respectful manner.
My own feeling about using anime in my art, you might notice that I always use shape and form of anime in most of my artworks, But my inner side always tells me that I don't have that much interest in it, I like to go to art museum instead of anime convention, I like to watch cartoon more than watching anime, I like to read aesthetic/philosophy and other books more than manga or doujin, [forget about video games, I've decided to quit it, cold freaking turkey] my only activity related to game is listening to games music/bgm.
But nevertheless, The main form
Real Scientific Danger of My Artistic InfluenceOne of the many complaints lobbed at me is that I have enormous influence on a younger generation and therefor it is incumbent upon me to shape up and fly right so these young tikes get the best artistic advice possible. IE: People worried that my “bad art and methods” are corrupting the next generation of artists and therefor I should stop making art altogether to prevent this.Real Scientific Danger of My Artistic Influence9 months ago in Personal More Like This
Setting aside the ignorant and harmful messages that this sends to young artists (such as the ignorant concept that all young artists only ever follow ONE artistic influence their entire life and aren’t influenced by ALL the art around them at all times), I decided to see how much credibility this “fear” actually had... using MATH.
So I have about 57,790 watchers on DA. I’m not counting other sites like Facebook or my website because there’s obviously some overlap, and some of the people who hate me will fill in that gap. So roughly 57,790 people on the planet watch me.
FergusonFirst off, I wanna state that I am not a journalist. This whole ordeal has been extremely messy and filled with a lot of conflicting information, so chances are what I write here might not be 100% accurate or be based on slightly incorrect information. I’ll do my best to explain it simply, but if you really want to know what’s going on it’s probably best to just google it yourself because... really... this is a mess. I'm sure plenty of other people will add info in the comments below or links to appropriate videos/tweets.Ferguson8 months ago in Personal More Like This
What happened here in Missouri
It all started when a cop shot an unarmed black teenager named Michael Brown for “jaywalking” in Ferguson, Missouri. Witnesses say Michael Brown, 18, had raised his hands to surrender when the shots were fired. Police have not confirmed that information.
Shortly afterwards a group of people approached the police department in peaceful protest and demanded answers and information, a lot of

Ya see, It’s always surprises me when someone says that I’m becoming too preachy, when in fact I’ve been preachy from the beginning. Don’t believe me? Take a look below!

You can team up. Here is where you can enter: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/embeddedform?formkey=dFRtcGRCOHJfTGdkR1VRZHJ4blJBTFE6MQ
Put your real info in there - don't worry, it won't be given out! Then put down a Pesterchum handle or Trollian or Skype if you don't have either (basically any IMing agent) in the second box!
Then hit go. On the prototyping, you can collect two items in real life, don't freak out about it, it's not on the computer or anything.
This is all that has been done so far, but the game will continue at 10 PM EST (don't worry if you're not up around that time, you can enter later.)
If you want to find team members, feel free to comment down here with your Handle or Trollian or IMing agent!

How to Steal Like an Artist
Artist Goals and RacismIntrospectionArtist Goals and Racism5 months ago in Personal More Like This
I think it’s important for artists to be introspective. I think it should be the goal of any cartoonist or artist to take a step back, look at the world, and question and challenge all assumptions and normalities. So often little social stigmas and issues go completely unnoticed by a vast majority of the population, that I think it’s important to be reminded of where we are, how things work, and challenge the status-quo.
I believe that’s one of the most fundamentally important things about being an artist. It’s not the artistic skill level, it’s your ability to poke fun at stuff and make average people question their routines. While artistic skill is important, the average consumer doesn’t really care about artistic merits if the overall message is conveyed well. I’ve seen many stick-figure comics and supposedly “low-skill” artists resonate with people because of the message they’re sending.
PE Daily Deviations - So you want to suggest DDs?You're browsing deviantART or are simply checking your message centre and find a wonderful art piece. You want to suggest it as a Daily Deviation because you believe it truly deserves to be seen by the community as a whole. But how to properly suggest a DD? This article will explain the process.PE Daily Deviations - So you want to suggest DDs?3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Things to check before sending a suggestion:
The first thing you need to check is if the artist has been given a Daily Deviation in the past 6 months. Volunteers cannot feature anyone who's had a DD in that period of time with no exceptions, as this has been hard-coded into deviantART's system.
"But how do I check an artist's Daily Deviations?" you may ask. Simply go to their gallery, click browse and scroll down. If they have any DDs, you'll be able to find a link to them at the bottom of the page. Alternatively, you can add "/dds" after their profile url and click enter on your browser's address bar.

I Hate April Fools DayNot because I’ve ever “been the fool” in a April 1st Prank or anything, but more or less because I have to endure the MONTHS upon MONTHS of people who unironically believe whatever bullshit joke a company decided to make on the internet that day.I Hate April Fools Day1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Some companies do the joke well, like YouTube when they announced the complete YouTube DVD collection, or when they turned all the videos into old timey black and white film strips.
But others, more commonly associated with the entertainment media, usually just create a fake new story that unfortunately spreads like wild-fire. I STILL see people unironically blaming Nintendo for never releasing Wind Waker with updated Twilight Princess models and textures.... based on an april fools joke made in 2005!
And part of the ire I have about this day comes from how VOLATILE and quick to HATE on everything is on the internet. Nobody actually stops and thinks before they post anything, so jokes like this usually just end up devolving i
Need help suggesting a Daily Deviation?Need help suggesting a Daily Deviation?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
What is a Daily Deviation?
The Daily Deviation is a daily feature chosen from the galleries here on deviantART.
A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large.
The staff/volunteer members responsible for selecting submissions for the daily feature often are open to suggestions and individual community members may direct their attention by noting the appropriate Community Volunteer or staff member with a direct link to the deviation which you are suggesting and a brief description about why you think the work in question should be featured.
How To Suggest a Daily Deviation:

ARTGERMINATION - My Digital Art ChatroomARTGERMINATION - My Digital Art Chatroom3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Many people has asked me about the rationale behind my nickname - Artgerm in many occasions. To me it is more than just a nick, it is actually my mission statement in my art journey, which I would like to see people get "infected" by my works and inspire them to create art. I've been drawing for the past 20 years, in which 16 years in digital medium. Art has already been part of my life long time ago - it is my passion, my profession and my life. Although majority of my time has been devoted to the commercial projects and my family and leave me very little time to impart my art knowledge to others outside of my studio, my mission statement has never and will never change.
As a result, I've decided to setup a deviantArt chatroom recently called Artgermination for all digital art discussions, which I put in a good amount of my time daily to interact with other dA members, sharing with them my journey in art and con
