User Styles: Lesson IIBecause there is so much interest in UserStyles but not enough people who actually work on such or know how to create them, this little tutorial series will try to change that. It will start with the basics, will explain all the things you need to know and will also give you little tasks, you can do, to become more involved.User Styles: Lesson II1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
My screenshots will be in german. I don't think it will be any problem for understanding the topic though. Should you still have any issues, let me know.
Adding, deleting, modifying UserStyles
Before you can change websites via UserStyles you need to add them to your Stylish. The easiest way is doing that by installing a style you like. Therefore you just have to go to userstyles.org, seach for a style you like and click that green install button.
Once you click the button, a new window will pop up and informs you about the site the selected style will affect. You then
Tips For Commission ArtistsHello! I thought of making this small guide, based from my personal experience, to give tips to artists, mostly beginners, to be more successful at selling commissions, since seeing from my previous journal many had difficulty with it. So here are some tips to help boosting your sales.Tips For Commission Artists9 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Have your commission info somewhere visible
Possibly, people won't even know you are taking commissions or if they are open if you don't put your commission info somewhere they can see. You can do this in a journal, that I mostly recommend, since it will be showing into your watcher's inboxes and most of your watchers probably rarely visit your profile page. You could still also use the commission widget, or donation poll to write your info. You can also link to your commission info in your signature or the artist's comment of new drawings you upload.
Keep it simple
Don't add too many unnecessary rules or in

My SAI KeybindingsI've been meaning to write down my current keybindings for a while. They're mostly only left in my muscle-memory whenever I lose them... Now they'll be here too.My SAI Keybindings5 months ago in Personal More Like This
These are for SAI, but I use similar ones in any other program that allows it. They're set up so the ones I tend to use together are comfortable for my hand to switch between.
Oh, and I have tiny hands so these will very much reflect that too. : )
You may notice a lot of emphasis on selection tools here... Since I often work with clean lineart in my drawings, that's the natural approach for someone like me. For others, I imagine this will be more about the actual keybindings rather than the function they're assigned.
I highly encourage anyone to experiment and find what works for them. It can save you a bunch of time in the long run, as well as make your workflow far more smooth! I hope seeing my setup can inspire someone out there to customize theirs too.
Tools don't make the art, but using them properly can ease the process

So, you want to make an awesome tutorial for your friends, and anybody else who might be interested in your style/techniques/skills/programming/designing ...
There are some essentials you are going to want to keep in mind when you make your tutorial.
Its not just a bunch of text and some pictures (OK it is, but theres more you could do! )
Its not just a few quick tips or pointers for a friend who asked you for some more details (OK it is, but its more than that! )
Its not just some work in progress screenshots/photos of your next big project (OK it is, but its SO MUCH more than that!!)
Don't forget, great design IS ART!
DeviantART is predominantly an English language website. However, DeviantART is a global community, so not everyone can read English fluently. Make sure your use of language i
The art of improvement5/4/2015 UPDATE: Added preface at the beginning and Inspiration at the end! added some thoughts on some other things I wanted to share. The art of improvement1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Alright, so this is a comment and question I've been receiving a lot from people!
How did you improve so fast?
Firstly, I want to say I do not think of myself as a professional artist, teacher or someone who "knows the secret to becoming a master artist". These are just things that I have picked up over the years, and noticed so I thought I might as well share my experience with improvement in effort to help others find their own paths of improvement and learning as artists. There are still many things I have to learn, and wish to improve about my own art! The path of an artist is never ending, in my opinion!
I consider the beginning of my journey when I withdrew from college. I had decided to take a year off from school, to explore myself more as a person, gain confidence and rethink my path that I wanted to take in school. Of course,
A concise guide on how to get better at artSo youre a kid looking down at your anime or comic characters and wondering why after a few years of doodling things arent looking like how you imagine them in your head. Or maybe youre a college student whos wondering why the colours in your paintings arent coming out right. Maybe youre an older fellow or lady whos dabbling in art and youre having trouble with drawing hands. Whoever you are and whatever your problem, you all have something in common;A concise guide on how to get better at art6 years ago in Art Features More Like This
You want to get better at representational art.
Here on deviantart its often the case where a noobie will ask a question and another noobie will answer with the very uninspired answer of "practice practice practice." At its core this advice is sound, but the noobie-teacher has just regurgitated what he or she has heard a thousand times over from other would-be noobie-teachers and has not expressed much else. Diligence is the key, but without a direction or goal this diligence might be
How to: Margin + PaddingFor this tutorial series I am explaining different elements you can create or modify with the help of CSS. The level of experience that is needed to be able to understand the tutorials can differ and will be in no order. How to: Margin + Padding2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
However I will try to explain the things as simple as possible. Upcoming questions should be left in a comment directly to this blog so that people with similar problems can look them up later as well.
The tutorial series is based on the gruze-structure of journals. If you are still using the old structure or have a journal installed that used it, things won’t work the same way like explained below.
For simple skins the old structure is fine, but the more features you add, the more I would recommend using the gruze-structure. You can look up the differences here: http://ginkgografix.deviantart.com/art/Old-vs-Gruze-Journals-112772369
It seems like a lot of people are struggling with the usage of margin and padding. In the end it doesn’t matter ho

Find out for yourself what you really want to do with art, there are so many different professions.
Graphic designer, Concept artist (mobile and high end), Illustrator of bookcovers, or card games.
Once you can make your pick, or at least pick 1 or 2 you must find the best work on the market in those fields.
Find out what makes the best art of your favorite field the best art. What do they paint? How do they paint it? With knowing this you can find out about the things you need to study.
The most basic study aims are the following:
What forms of light art there? And how does it influence things?
The book Color and Light by James Gurney will give you a lot of insight.
How do you paint shapes? How do you light them the right way?
You will learn a l

i like being a girl.
i love being a girl.
I love wearing dresses and short shorts and blouses and bows and I love painting my nails and wearing make up.
I love having long hair and being able to do different things with my hair.
I love cute shoes and going clothes shopping,
and pretty much all the things that full under the "girl" stereotype.
I love being refered to as "she" and I love having female parts.
I love being a girl and I'm proud of being a girl.
but a lot of girls don't.
and a lot of boys don't like being boys, either.
and many of them decide to change that.
This is to all of the transgender/transvestite children who don't feel like they belong anywhere.
you do, i promise.
Whether you're FTM or MTF,
or if you feel like a mixture between the 2 or a girl on some days and a boy on others,
or maybe you don't even feel like a specific gender at all.
Or maybe you're questioning your gender.
you are a beautiful human being

There's a lot of crap on the internet about what makes a character a Mary Sue/Gary Stu and what does not. Well, here's what I personally think about certain traits that some people overdo and how you can use them in your work without butchering them to the point of Uber-Sue Wonderland. This will tie in with my How to Roleplay Efficiently and How to Create a Good Horror OC journals. You don't have to agree with me on any of this. All opinions are my own, and I'm not trying to bash any particular OCs out there. I'm just trying to clear up some things and help people with OC development. Enjoy.

Alright, you know how a lot of OCs out there who are classified as Sues have tragic pasts? They come a dime a dozen, right? Well, I don't think the input of a tragic past is t

+Poke Radar (Obtained after you beat the game. It is on the second floor of Prof. Sycamore’s lab.)
+TONS of Repels. At least 300 to 500. I usually buy the Super Repels since they are cheaper than Max Repels. But use whichever repel you want to! As long as you have a lot, it won't matter.
+A pretty big patch to chain in. You can chain in smaller ones, but I’d recommend a big one if you’re just starting. The best patches to chain in are the big green grass patch on Route 7 near the caves, Pokemon Village, and the large patch of purple flowers on Route 5 just before Camphrier Town.

Tip #2: Line art Tips to becoming a better artist #2Tip #2: Line art1 year ago in Personal More Like This
A lot of new artists underestimate the power of line art, so let's make a quick one about line art!
(If this is all new to you, here's a quick tutorial on how to draw a face: face tutorial )
To the left you see the drawing with its original lines. I don't know why, but I like to draw the contours of the face a little thicker. The image in the middle shows the drawing after I've made some lines thicker and painted some areas completely black. This is my finished line art. As you can see, this makes a huge difference and creates a lot of depth!
Let's go through the list of places I usually darken up:
1. Where lines meet
2. The... back of the hair? (It's almost 3 am idk how to explain this i'm sorry TTwwTT)
3. The part of the neck that is shadowed by the chin (I usually just m

What is a DD-worthy artwork and how to make one?First of all, this is a personal opinion! I'm writing what I think about this topic. What is a DD-worthy artwork and how to make one?9 months ago in Personal More Like This
I thought it would be nice to make a journal with this theme, however I haven't any DD instead I usually suggest works. Sometimes they got feature, sometime they don't. Also, I'm in the GetDailyDeviation group as moderator and I see a lots of people with lots of style on deviantArt who wants to get this "award-like-thing".
• Then why got so many deviation decline?
There are so many possibility. It can depends on the knowledge behind the artwork. CVs won't feature something what looks like half-done because it hasn't any background, or has many mistakes in anatomy, perspectives, compositions, etc.
Although it also can depends on the taste of the CVs.
Some useful tips
• Notice the Thing
The thing is the style of a DD. What is a "DD worthy" piece? If you look through all of the D
