Line art tracing and referencing part 2Feel free to disagree with what I have to say this is just my personal opinion on the matter.Line art tracing and referencing part 25 months ago in Personal More Like This
The first post was not about completely dismissing using photo referencing for learning. But it is what most young artist use to get started, since its a little less frustrating then trying to start out doing realistic anatomy. Referencing other artist work helps them get their feet wet in a since and just have fun with drawing.
And when I say young artist I mean young in skill level, you can be a artist starting out at the age of 17 doesn't mean you should be forced to use realistic anatomy just yet or ever, if your just doing it for fun then you don't have to worry about it as much. But if you post it online, you will be judged depending how popular you are, so just be aware of that.
If you are seriously about your work, you should try to jump into real anatomy as soon as you feel comfortable with drawing freely without the aide of a visual toon re

"Kiriban" is a word that lots and lots of people use, especially here on Deviantart. Get the pageview hit, get a gift. however...
most people in general know what it is, but not what it means -> http://forum.deviantart.com/devart/general/977173/
-3- me being Japanese myself wanted to find out the origin of
this term and what it actually mean so I did a nice amount of searchin.
first I found this googled:
"Kiriban is the Japanese term (Kanji: キリ番 ) for web counter special"
but that doesnt really help to understand the meanig
so I googled "キリ番":
and found out that キリ番 is actually a shorten version of「きりのいい番号」
so... for this, キリ would mean "cut" and "きりのいい" would mean "well cut"
「きりのいい番号」would then literally mean- "a we
Don't get playedAlright, so there was a recent 'happening' in the dA forums concerning a commission offer made by someone with the starting price of $30. The piece they were asking for was supposedly a really highly detailed piece, large resolution, and basically something you'd spend (on the low end of the market) no less than $250.00 on.Don't get played8 months ago in Personal More Like This
Now, from here on out this may be purely opinion and because my participation in the industry has only been for about 10 years (as in being paid for my work) I may not be the best person to speak on this matter. However, I have to say something, if only to put my own opinions on the matter out there.
15 years ago I got my first commission. It was a full colour realism portrait for someone of their dog and I offered to do it for $5.00 using traditional media.
They took up the offer and it took me about a week of working on and off to finish their image. At the time I wasn't anywhere near being sure of my skills even though I'd been drawing comprehensively
Exercise 19: BraidingTHIS WEEK's EXERCISE POST : THE FULL POST AND DETAILSExercise 19: Braiding6 months ago in Personal More Like This
EXERCISE: Create 5 examples of braiding on the given worksheet
Braiding is more than just a hairstyle for girls. Braiding refers to the overlapping and look of intersecting strands whether it be hair, leather, chain link, etc. This is a simple exercise one you understand the way different strands lay over each other. This isn’t to say men can’t have braids either. Look at the Lord of the Ring movies for example, and how they treat braids on male characters. The “look” of braiding can also be found in armor, clothing, and accessories. It is a simple yet basic skill to have at your disposal.
What should you look at for doing this exercise?
What “trick” you will use to remember how to place the braids. Either remember the zig-zig in the m
How to get noticed on deviantART!:faq56:How to get noticed on deviantART!9 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I've had many people ask me this question so I'm going to elaborate the best I can.
As the FAQ above states, to get far on deviantART you HAVE to give feedback to get it. It's almost virtually impossible for you to get noticed without doing any of that. I learned that after a year of being here.
This is something that you will have to do in your dA lifetime in order to find your inspirations and be able to learn new techniques. When on the front page of deviantART it's probably the most diverse amount of artwork you'll see! Ranging from pixels to sculptures, tattoos to anime to poems, there has to be at least one that can catch your eye! There are millions of deviants here and even more submissions! Try searching for artworks that please you. You can even have a randomized search by using stuff like the random d
Rooke's Character Building ExerciseThis was something I came up with when I was bored yesterday, and it turned out pretty fun. So you're welcome to try it.Rooke's Character Building Exercise9 months ago in Personal More Like This
Something very important to storytelling is creating unique, realistic characters who have thoughts, dreams, goals, and impressions all their own. Sometimes creating characters can be difficult if you don't know where to start, or if you can't seem to break out of certain stereotypes with your characters. So I made this little exercise in character building, just as a jump start to creating some random, interesting characters.
First, we have our two columns - TRAITS, and ROLES. A trait is an adjective. A role is a job or a "purpose" a character has. Most good characters have complex purposes and roles that they fill, far more than a single all encompassing word. But you can use these as starting points to creating characters.
What I did was make a list of 32 "traits" and "roles", whatever I could think of off the top of my head, that could be applied to stories of

If you'd like to volunteer up your art as examples for Part 2, please comment or note me about it for details.
It looks like most of my musings about art stem from :iconalnico-ism: for some reason. The color tutorial I'm working slowly on making, the idea of using bright colors as shadows, and the idea of composition I will present here all come from conversations he and I have.
A lot of people tell me "I haven't taken art classes" or "I just like to draw so I don't really care about all the technical stuff." The question I want to ask everyone, not just the people who say that, is: "Do you want to improve?"
Color theory and the principles/elements of design were NOT defined or created to make your art life miserable. Intelligent people took time and effort over the course of hundreds of years to put the "whys" of art into word form. Even if you choose not to use them, even if you don

-Writing your text and code in HTML mode will solve most of your broken code and formatting problems!
-Whether you're formatting a journal, artist description, comment, etc, you can switch from the default Rich Text mode to HTML mode by pressing CTRL + E.
EDIT: A very kind person (Kureiya) has explained to me that CTRL + E will switch you from Rich Text mode editing to HTML mode editing! Apparently HTML mode editing is how dA's old system allowed us to code and format in journals, comments, etc...WHICH WORKED A LOT BETTER AND MADE MORE SENSE IN MY OPINION.
ALSO, IF YOU HAVE TIME, PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!! THANKS!! I wasn't aware that a lot of people actually don't know about this function. It's really useful and can help resolve a lot of problems!
I've noticed that dA is very nasty with the HTML coding and formatting in the artist comments after Rich Text editing was added to
What are adoptables? (The informational journal)FAQ: AdoptablesWhat are adoptables? (The informational journal)2 years ago in Personal More Like This
What are adoptables?
The 'adoptables' you are seeing in this group are mostly animal, hybrid and human designs artists use as personas or characters. They have no physical presence. They are mainly artistic designs of all sorts sold for points (a strictly dA resource), trade or real cash.
How do I sell them? What are the rules for adoptables?
The designs sold are like selling pieces of artwork - they have to be one of a kind and not a copy of someone else's design. If you sell a design that is (or is almost like) somebody else's design, you can get banned from dA for art theft.
To sell an adoptable, it has to be a design you made that you are willing to sell to someone else for the trade of your choice. You can trade it for one of their adoptables, sell it to them for points/money or even give it away for free. You may do this as long as you m

PE Prose Basics: Hear Me My Audience!!Hello everyone!PE Prose Basics: Hear Me My Audience!!6 months ago in Literature Features More Like This
Throughout this week we will be discussing a variety of elements in prose writing and this topic is something which isn't just relevant to prose writers, but can be applied to all forms.
Imagine your piece of work is laid out on a stage for people to read. In the seats are the people who you want to read it- who are they? Can you see their faces, imagine their lives? Why have they been drawn to come see your work and read your story? What did you to to keep that audience sat down and interested in your work? Did you think about them when you wrote?
An audience is anyone who could potentially read your work. In writing, we talk about "target audience" and how understanding that audience can help shape the way you write. That intended audience could be specified by age, interests, personalities, cultural background, religion- anything! Of course you may gain readers outside of that target group, but considering your audience will involve your reader in the wr
Rivals and IdolsRivals and Idols6 months ago in Personal More Like This
I personally feel that you should see people you admire/idols as a level you should strive to achieve or surpass, not think of them as gods you can never hope of ever being like.
That will only make you depressed and not strive to be great, we all have Potential as long as we have a passion for what we do.
I suggest taking a look at a person you admire the work of, an setting your self a goal to achieve that level! Make them a Rival in your mind, think of them as a person that started out just like you, but are a wee bit ahead of the game, you may have a little farther to travel on your journey of becoming better or surpassing them.
But never give up keep up that burning passion.
PE: ''Said'' and Effective Dialogue TagsI have horrifying news, everyone: I'm teaming up with Project Educate for Prose Week, so you inquisitive readers are about to fall victim to me and my terrible sense of humor. Today I'll be torturing you with a discourse on a subject of constant debate in the writing world: the word said. It's a simple word that encourages authors to write descriptively, but it's far from the only good choice when it comes to writing fluid dialogue.PE: ''Said'' and Effective Dialogue Tags6 months ago in Art Features More Like This
I'm going to be using the word dialogue tag often, so if you're unfamiliar with the word or just need a refresher, here's the definition:
Dialogue Tag—a phrase used in the same paragraph as a piece of dialogue, both (1) identifying the speaker and (2) using a verb to describe the speech. Examples of dialogue tags include Rose said, he begged, Adrian whispered, and she asked.
Get the picture? If so, great, and if not, you'd better Google it, because we're moving on.
Anything besides 'said' and 'ask

* Pricing their artwork
* Gaining more experience and ways to improve

So let's start off with Pricing, shall we?
It seems to be a common problem, more so among younger/novice artists who are looking to start selling their work. It looks pretty easy when you look at the more popular/well known artists who have already established a consumer base and seem to be cranking out commissions left and right. However, let me just clear the air on this before we get started -- Fame isn't everything. Now, I know it may seem like it is the key ingredient to getting customers but that's not the case. Yes, being more well known can help bring in more revenue but it's not what gets you started in the first

Marketing Materials For ArtistsEDIT: Well butter my biscuits, some of my gifs disappeared into the interwebs. I'll remedy this soon!Marketing Materials For Artists5 months ago in Art Features More Like This
It’s no secret that us artists aren’t great at selling ourselves. The creative process is so much work it’s easy to assume that your work will be able to sell itself. Sometimes it can, but that’s not usually the case. Even if you aren’t interested in going commercial with your career (and there is absolutely nothing wrong with going that route), it is important have professional materials to present to clients, employers and galleries. If you aren’t interested in being “full time” with selling your artwork, I think it would still be good to consider putting together marketing materials as a means of creating good client relations.
This journal will include a number of things you may need in marketing yourself, but also if you are applying to art schools or for various jobs in art. I would also like to note that you d

"How the hell did you get so many people to view your art? You're not even that good!"
I can't do anything other than honestly admitting that I'm not that good at art. I'm not some awesomely skilled concept artist, at least. I've seen many people do a better job while receiving a lot less of attention.
Why a medium like DeviantArt works for me? Probably because I've been around on the internet for so long, and I've spend so much time working for internet-marketing company's, that things like advertising and web usability have become a second nature to me. A lot of the things that I've come to regard as common sense in internet communication, are things that are nowadays proven successful by research.
It's important to know that websites like DeviantArt are listed in the category social media. That probably didn't occur to most people, since DeviantArt seems to be so heavily focused towards art (and tradi

The Inevitability of IndividualityI've been working on this for quite a while and I really hope you guys enjoy the result. I was looking through my favourites and it struck me how images with a similar composition can look so different, particularly of people. The phrase "The inevitability of individuality" came to me, and thus this project was born. Now, posting it, it feels like a piece of artwork in itself but sadly all the images belong to other people (click through and fave!). In any case the point of this art piece is to remind us all that no matter what we do we are uniquely ourselves. There's no point, and no need, to try and be someone else.
