Tips on: How to make an original species?I got asked by a few people but I wrote out this response to jasper-chan's ask on my tumblr. since it's all written out I feel like it'd be at least somewhat appreciated to those who are curious of what I keep in mind while making an original speciesTips on: How to make an original species?10 months ago in Personal More Like This
WARNING it's a little messy but if you are confused then feel free to ask me questions I'll do my best to answer properly
In general I’d suggest to think "what physical characteristics should be involved with my species? and how can i make it unique?"
for a species to be a species (especially closed species) there should be at least some distinctive physical trait that they're born with.
imo it’s not a very good species if they can take off what would make them a species. for example, a group of kemonomimis that likes to wear a specific fashion is more of a culture than a species. I wouldn’t add their fashion into their main descrip
character design/personality tips!!!this is for cartooning, and stuff like that.character design/personality tips!!!10 months ago in Personal More Like This
ok so i decided to share some things that I've learned about creating characters that are original…
this will be a process/ step by step "tutorial", and for it ill take you through development of this character i made up a while ago but never posted lol.
1. think about the character's personality.
personality is like
the most important thing ever
the never-posted character's personality was
-quiet /// antisocial
-blindly follows orders // not very bright
-seems like a pushover but not afraid to defend himself
tips on personality:
- DONT make your character a mary sue. for a definition of a mary sue go here: http://fav.me/d399c5
- also, dont make your characters have no good qualities. they should be bad at some things and good at other things.
- dont make your character generic!!!
yay!! u have a personality…but no design to go with it. its time for the fun part!!!!

Do you do trades? Not anymore really!
CAN YOU DRAW ME SOMETHING?? No sorry! Time is money
commissions? check my journals or the link on my profile.
How long have I been pixeling?
-Since late 2011.
How do you achive such soft looking shading on your pixels? Do you stick only to the pencil/fill tools, or do you utilize brushes?
Or do you just use enough colors to make it blend nicely?
-OPACITY there I spilled the beans countless times now.. opacity with the pencil tool. It just helps me finish pixels faster and keeps me in touch with my painterly-side lol.
I DONT USE THE DAMN BRUSH TOOL. JUST LEARN TO USE THE PENCIL TOOL'S OPACITY SETTINGS. ITS AMAZING...
smooths everything out. but leaves it pixelated. If you use the brush tool. im pretty sure its gonna look blurry
What program do you use?
-photoshop cs3, I suggest you learn photoshop cuz I love it/plus its free lol
What inspires you to make pixel art/ how did you get into pixel art?

How to make new friendsMaking friends on dA is something requires you to have an open personality. Having an open personality isn't always something people are born with. Some people have to develop it over time, and some people are just naturally friendly. It's a wonderful quality to have in real life and on the internet. How to make new friends1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I'm gonna help you break the barrier of your timidness toward others. It won't be something that happens over night but with time and perseverance, you'll start see how friendlier you are to people on deviantART and in real life!
So to start us off.. You will need to...
Greet the person!
(Yeah but nobody is as cute as stitch is. xD)
Don't be shy. You'll never know what they would have said if they didn't. A simple "hello" or "hey" will suffice. Compliments are nice too but don't go overboard with it. Don't be nervous or overanxious of what you or they are going to say. Everything flows easier if you be yourself instead of trying

Do you feel like no one cares about your artwork? That no matter how hard you try, you'll never improve? Well, I've been there before.
A little less than a year ago, I didn't even have 100 watchers. It was tough trying to find commissions, even though I priced them around 10 - 100 an hour. Sure, I had some wonderful people supporting me (thank you very much for that!), but when I looked at the thousands of diehard fans the "popular" artists had, I felt kinda useless. It seemed like even a thousand watchers, or just being able to earn minimum wage was impossible. Sometimes I wanted to cry from all the effort I put in. I kept drawing and drawing but barely improving. I was frustrated and felt useless. But instead of giving up, I pushed myself even harder, and by God's grace it's starting to work out for me.
I now have over 16,000 amazing people encouraging me, and I know it's only a matter of tim
Tips For Commission ArtistsHello! I thought of making this small guide, based from my personal experience, to give tips to artists, mostly beginners, to be more successful at selling commissions, since seeing from my previous journal many had difficulty with it. So here are some tips to help boosting your sales.Tips For Commission Artists6 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Have your commission info somewhere visible
Possibly, people won't even know you are taking commissions or if they are open if you don't put your commission info somewhere they can see. You can do this in a journal, that I mostly recommend, since it will be showing into your watcher's inboxes and most of your watchers probably rarely visit your profile page. You could still also use the commission widget, or donation poll to write your info. You can also link to your commission info in your signature or the artist's comment of new drawings you upload.
Keep it simple
Don't add too many unnecessary rules or in
Line art tracing and referencing part 2Feel free to disagree with what I have to say this is just my personal opinion on the matter.Line art tracing and referencing part 211 months ago in Personal More Like This
The first post was not about completely dismissing using photo referencing for learning. But it is what most young artist use to get started, since its a little less frustrating then trying to start out doing realistic anatomy. Referencing other artist work helps them get their feet wet in a since and just have fun with drawing.
And when I say young artist I mean young in skill level, you can be a artist starting out at the age of 17 doesn't mean you should be forced to use realistic anatomy just yet or ever, if your just doing it for fun then you don't have to worry about it as much. But if you post it online, you will be judged depending how popular you are, so just be aware of that.
If you are seriously about your work, you should try to jump into real anatomy as soon as you feel comfortable with drawing freely without the aide of a visual toon re

EXPERIMENT RESULT (HOW TO GET POPULAR ON DA)So for the last couple of days iw been researching a couple of things regarding popularity on da, and what people likes, and watches you for. And id like to publish the result.EXPERIMENT RESULT (HOW TO GET POPULAR ON DA)1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Just so you know, getting popular on da don't really help you improve ur art skills wish to me is the most important thing of all.
First of all, i hawe to tell you that i named submissions after the style i used, for example:
Submission 1A here and submission 1D
The 1A style is Thin line-arted with colorful shadows, and 1D is semi realism.
The 1A style allowed me to produce more art a day (since it takes less time to produce).
I submited around 2 a day and gained 8 watchers a day. But not much comments and favs. Since The 1A submissions where so close in date, my watchers could not comment on all of em.
But the styleA FAN ART got much more attention.
Fan art gets more attention since they often have huge fan bases. So when people
Did You Know - BlockingBlockingDid You Know - Blocking8 months ago in Art Features More Like This
While many people tend to report other deviants they don't get along with or they feel harassed by to the HelpDesk right away, your first action should always be blocking.
Whatever reason you have to report someone, by blocking you avoid any further communication with certain deviants.
This action is immediate, as you don't have to wait for any staff member to take action and you can just enjoy your dA experience without that blocked deviant.
Personal reasons like disagreeing on a topic, not liking someone or similar won't end with a ban of that other deviant.
Contacting the HelpDesk just adds to the queue of tickets unnecessarily and makes it more time consuming to focus on important reports.
Only in case of serious harassment you should contact the HelpDesk.
If you are blocking someone it's an action in both directions. That means that not only the other person gets blocked from you, but you are automatically blocked for them as well.

Notes on Character Design
I received the question pictured below at my tumblr blog. In case it's useful to anyone here, I decided to go ahead and use this otherwise dormant journal to share the article I put together in response.
Character design and drawing are tome-sized topics and even if I had all the answers (I don't - I have a lot to learn), I'm not sure I could communicate them effectively. Here are some thoughts an ideas that might help, though.
First, some general things...
Let some of that anxiety go. This isn't a hard science. There's no wrong way, no rigid process you must adhere to, no shoulds or shouldn'ts except those you designate for yourself. This is one of the fun parts of being an artist, really - have a heady good time with it.

This is the first part of a tutorial series that I will be working on in the future and will be released whenever I find the time for it.
In order to know how I can make them better and to make it easier for you to understand the things I am talking about it would be appreciated if you would leave some feedback!
For this tutorial series I am explaining different elements you can create or modify with the help of CSS. The level of experience that is needed to be able to understand the tutorials can differ and will be in no order. I will try to explain the things as simple as possible though.
To create a scrollbox you don’t need much, just a box with a limited height or width in order to enforce the scrollbar. If you don’t limit the dimensions of the box it will adjust itself to the space given by the browser resolution and settings.
The limited dimension itself doesn’t create the scrollbar,

When I was in college, I took an early morning Anthropology class. I had to wake up at five to catch the bus. Ugh. Yeah, I'm not a morning person. But I did it. The first day, our instructor stood before us and starting reading from the textbook. Word for word. Completely monotone. I was asleep within ten minutes. The rest of the week was the same; arrive, begin listening to the instructor, pass out. I had to drop the class and get whatever refund I could, while I could. It was my worse class experience there.
Most people know that in public speaking, the person talking needs to vary their tone and speech patterns and such to hold their audience's attention. They need to have a rhythm. Otherwise, they'll end up putting the audience to sleep. The same applies to writing. If you use the same sentence length or structure continually, you'll be the literary equivalent of my instructor. User Styles: Lesson IIBecause there is so much interest in UserStyles but not enough people who actually work on such or know how to create them, this little tutorial series will try to change that. Adding, deleting, modifying UserStyles
Before you can change websites via UserStyles you need to add them to your Stylish. The easiest way is doing that by installing a style you like. Therefore you just have to go to userstyles.org, seach for a style you like and click that green install button.
Once you click the button, a new window will pop up and informs you about the site the selected style will affect. You then

However I will try to explain the things as simple as possible. Upcoming questions should be left in a comment directly to this blog so that people with similar problems can look them up later as well.
The tutorial series is based on the gruze-structure of journals. If you are still using the old structure or have a journal installed that used it, things won’t work the same way like explained below.
For simple skins the old structure is fine, but the more features you add, the more I would recommend using the gruze-structure. You can look up the differences here: http://ginkgografix.deviantart.com/art/Old-vs-Gruze-Journals-112772369
It seems like a lot of people are struggling with the usage of margin and padding. In the end it doesn’t matter ho
