I'm excited for the opportunity to design and make the costume for a villain in an upcoming Steampunk action adventure web series called "Archangel"! I'll share details about the project soon, this is truly just a sneak peek at it! 
The jacket was especially fun to make, and I used 3 different fabrics for the outer layer and silk for the lining. I also made the feather collar, steel boned Victorian cut corset, leather pants and armor pieces (Worbla!!) The tailoring was very important for this costume, and I wanted it to look authoritative yet still feminine.

Debuted at Animecon Netherlands (June 2014)

Inspiration:
I'm so excited to share the first photo of Heartseeker Ashe!! It's the newest costume I made and I'm so happy with it! 
I based this costume off the splash art of this skin noobabble.files.wordpress.com/… - it is a beautiful illustration and I loved the colors and theme of it. The in-game skin looks a bit different, so I chose to stick closer to the splash art!

Construction:
I approach each costume as a translation of the design into a wearable garment, and often choose artistic interpretation over 100% accuracy. My goal for each costume is to get the feel and essence of the character across, and I aim to pay homage to the character, while injecting my own style and aesthetics into each costume.
So for Heartseeker Ashe, I used a variety of fabrics and mixed them together. I also tapered the jacket to be wider at the bottom and made a double circle skirt instead of the mini skirt in the game rendering. I thought the wider bottom would balance out the puffy sleeves and big hair and give me a more feminine silhouette.
I started collecting materials for this costume as soon as possible, and chose luxurious fabrics such as red silk, a lavender swirl patterned satin, a maroon brocade, and a matte metallic plum colored pvc. I made a red silk bodice and then tailored the jacket over it. The jacket is fully lined and custom patterned. The cape drapes almost like a flag in the game, so I made it t be stiff and heavy. The thigh high boot covers, garters, gloves, choker and shoe hearts rounded out the outfit.
All of the gold trimming on the costume is hand patterned and cut gold neoprene, sewn on. I discovered this technique by accident and was so thrilled with how easy it was to work with, and how sleek it looks. Definitely recommend others to try making trim with metallic neoprene!
I also made the heart shaped hair piece out of Worbla! The wig started off as a Matilda from Arda - I gradient dyed it from white to light blue, as a bridge between the splash art and the game render, and styled big barrel curls into it.

BOW - I want to thank my dear friend Kamui Cosplay (www.facebook.com/KamuiCos) for making the stunning bow for me. This costume really came to be because we were chatting about potential future cosplays, and I asked her for advice on how to make the bow. Kamui replied that she needs to make a variety of props for documentation for her new Prop Making book, including a bow, so she suggested for us to collaborate together on this project.

Conclusion:
I have always wanted to make a Valentine's themed costume, and now I have!  It's such a chic outfit and I love wearing it. I'll bring it to Anime Expo next, for Saturday. I'll be hanging out at my booth 920/922 as Ashe, so come by and say hello!

Regarding the Sheryl costume, I made it as part of a duo with my friend Hanime as Ranka!
We bought the same brocade satin and chiffons and each sewed the costumes over the course of a few weeks. I used two wigs from Arda Wigs to create Sheryl's elaborate wig, and Hanime's wig was from EpicCosplay. Sheryl's wig was definitely my biggest focus on this costume. It took 3 days of work to make, and required some outside the box thinking and creative finagling. I wanted to make the Oiran wig come apart for transport, so everything is in pieces that hook and stick into the wig. I used foam and Worbla for shaping, and spent a whole day painstakingly gluing strands of wig hair down to make the hair fans.

I'm bringing Batgirl to C2E2! You can find me at my exhibit hall booth 216 right up front, please come by if you can!

Batgirl construction breakdown:
-Armor made from plastic (chest piece & shoulders) and urethane rubber (abdomen). Patterned and sculpted by me, molded with help from Brian Boling, finished and attached by me. (It was a bitch)
-Undersuit made from a shiny and a matte stretch pleather. Patterned and sewn by me. The quilted parts were really fun!
-Cape made from matching black and gold pleather, with lead cape weights. Swooshiest cape I have ever made lol
-Gauntlets made with Worbla & foam, covered in matching gold pleather. I really enjoyed drafting the template for these pieces! I know from how clumsy I am that I could not make the gauntlets out of resin or plastic, or even fiberglass. I would either hurt myself or destroy them at cons. So I opted for worbla/foam because it is lightweight and surprisingly durable.
-Gloves made from scratch from same gold pleather. I tried to be super accurate with the design and made individual quilted finger pads O_o
-Boots used to be Thigh High boots, I altered them severely. A note about the high heels - yes I know they are not accurate. BUT I am so short and the costume is so padded out with the armor and pleathers that I need some help on the height front to pull off that look.
-Belt made from gold powdered urethane rubber

Snow day!! Since I'm stuck at my house, I decided to share a photo of the newest costume I made!

Enira, the Banshee Queen from Lineage 2

Why I decided to make this costume:
As soon as I saw this character, I knew I had to make the costume. It was an instant obsession! I began collecting materials immediately, which is the key for me to turn any cosplay wish list item to actual craftsmanship project. I really really believe that half of the work on any costume is done through research, break down of materials and techniques, and the acquisition of every bit of material you may need.
I also knew early on that I wouldn't be tall enough for the proportions of Enira. There were too many details on her costume for it to fit on my damned short figure. So in a crazed moment I decided to buy a pair of stilts online and incorporate them into this costume. This one decision made Enira instantly into the most pain in the ass costume to make/transport/wear, out of all 270+ I have made.

How I made this costume:
Oh Goodness, this build felt like a battle all the way, mostly due the time limit I had to set for myself. I knew I had to get this costume done before my convention tour for 2014 started, because my travel schedule is about to get crazy and last through most of the year. I have the most blocks of time to do intense crafting between December and end of February, which is why often you'll see my most elaborate costumes come out in Spring, not Summer.  
I used to not have the luxury of choosing from a wide range of materials, so these days, I buy in bulk and I usually get back up options as well. Time is my biggest enemy, so being prepared is the most important weapon I can wield.

To keep this post from turning into a huge novel, I will post a detailed breakdown of construction on each piece when I add Enira to my website. For now, let's just summarize that every piece on this costume is made from scratch.
My wig is 2 Arda Wigs combined, which a foam and Worbla base. It's like a helmet lol! Steel boned corset, custom patterned sleeves with foam backing, a lot of Worbla used on various pieces, made and painted wings, 5 foot long ballgown skirt, tattered with a blow torch, spiderweb skirt is neoprene with Worbla spines, Fred the skeleton and my horns are foam with fast curing plastic brushed over and sealed… I'm sure I'm forgetting something…
All together, about 50 yards of fabric, 100 yards of trims, hundreds of feathers, 1.5 full sheets of Worbla, 14 days of non-stop crafting with 1 - 3 hours of sleep each night, and a very scared Yaya not knowing if she can even walk on stilts with all this weight on.

I have learned a lot of lessons over the years about how to plan out and make costumes, and it felt very out of my element to take on a project that I didn't feel confident in. There were many variables that could go wrong, and it was an interesting journey to make Enira in such a short amount of time. A big part of me is glad that even after 14 years, I still have a lot to learn and there are tons of projects out there that provide challenges for me. The whole point of being an artist is to keep growing and learning, and I appreciate every lesson.

I have to give a special shout out and Thank You to the following friends, who came over for an emergency day of help right before I left for New Orleans. Yashuntafun Cosplay, Twinklebat, Jessie and Rachel work in my office and saw that I was super overwhelmed one day, so they came over and helped with tedious bits such as tattering the skirt, making chain tassels, spray painting, gathering tulle, packing up the big pieces for shipping to New Orleans etc. Brian also helped with Fred the skeleton and getting me dressed each time since it was a 3 person job lol. A special Thank You also to Kevin Spooner for mixing an amazing track of music for me to walk out on stage to. I'm all about giving credit and I appreciate my friends' support in this project. Sometimes, a  costume is bigger than you O_O.

Waaaah I'm so excited to share new Fiora photos with you guys! I recently had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful country of Romania, as a Guest of East European Comic Con, and during my stay there, our hosts Shjinu and Gabi took us on a castle visit for an epic cosplay photoshoot!
The weather was perfect, the setting was divine, and I'm just so grateful for the chance to dress up as my favorite LoL Champion on a real Medieval castle ground. 

Costume: Fiora - Nightraven skin - League of Legends

Couple of facts about this costume:

This is my full armor set & sword for Fiora - League of Legends. Made out of Worbla (sword made out of wood, hilt made of Worbla). This took over 4 weeks of learning a new technique and using a new material -it was a good and agonizing experience lol


- I made it myself, which was a bitch. But I loved the process too! The material for the armor is Worbla, a Thermoplastic from Europe. The paint used is acrylics brush on over a spray painted base color.
Worbla is available for purchase in the Americas here!

- In the Nightraven skin, Fiora actually does not have the red streak in her hair. Yes, I am wearing red contacts.

- No, I'm not tall enough to be an accurate Fiora. But I chose this costume for the grace and dignity of the character mixed with the dark cool armor design. My motto is that anyone can cosplay whoever they want. This is a hobbyist community :)

- I thought about distressing this armor but Fiora is actually very prim and proper as a Duelist! She would not allow her armor to be dirty and dinged up :)

- Although I have worn this costume already, it's still not entirely finished. There are some things I want to add to the bodysuit underneath.

Character: C.C. - Code Geass (Artbook dress)

New photoshoot of C.C. at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco!! I really wanted to take a pretty cupcake costume to this amazing location and I'm so happy Brian was willing to shoot it!

This costume was made entirely by me. I used about 14 yards of dark red heavy weight satin, not to mention all the yards of organza for the interlay, and tulle for the petticoat.
I made the templates for the butterflies and trim by cutting up the actual CLAMP artwork and sizing it up on the computer to myself. My friends Jessica and Megan helped me trace out the templates to make patterns, and together we transferred all the patterns onto fabric which I already cut and sewed into the skirts. Then I cut out all the trim and butterflies with a soldering tool, which took many days of breathing fumes and sore/burnt fingers. I also made the bodice, sleeves, hair pieces, choker, shoulder straps, petticoat... everything to complete this costume.

I bought a 10 gross count (1440) of Swarovski crystals for another costume but never used it! I thought it would be awesome to make crystal prosthetics for Emma. I started off my drawing on my plaster headcast to figure out how many pieces I needed and what they should be shaped like. I wanted the diamond transformation to stretch down my neck and shoulder. Then I sprayed a mold release on the cast and painted thin latex on in multiple layers. After letting that dry, I individually glued over 1000 Swarovski crystals onto the pieces with E-6000. The bond was great, and made the prosthetic pieces stronger. The headcast ensured that each piece was formed perfectly to my face shape, neck line, shoulder line and clavicle. The prosthetics were glued on to me via ProsAid, and held on amazingly for 12 hours, even with me smiling, talking, eating and fidgeting. I specifically chose to make latex pieces instead of gluing stones over a mesh so that I could re-use the pieces over and over again and have full range of motion each time I wore this costume. I also don't have time at cons to glue 1000+ crystals to myself each time, but I do have time to glue a few pieces on then scatter more crystals around them for a blended look.
