A closer shot in better lighting. like most of my other hoofers the customer wanted a "calm relaxed neutral expression"
Also I actually really need to update this "how to build horse heads" thing lilleahwest.deviantart.com/art… namely since I have a seen a few folks using it as a guide. While the bare bones of this is built pretty much the same I use a lot more soft foam to round out the bridge of both the top and underside of the head, to define the cheeks eyebrow ridge, and round out the nose area. The Elk is actually a better current example than that "how to build horse heads" (the elk lacks the foam under the head to round out that area) lilleahwest.deviantart.com/art…
I love the angular nature of hooved animal heads and luckily the angular shape is very well suited to how neck vision style heads have to be made, they have to be hollow to house the required fan overhead (otherwise they get real stuffy real fast) hence why these heads get puzzled together out of hard foam vs carved from soft foam.
PS so far all my hoofers have come from owners wanting more neutral expressions, I rather crave getting to do a hoofer with some major attitude... would anyone care to order an ornery wild mustang? been ages since I did a pinto, you'd have a confirmed place on my list come quote openings in July... And speaking of a wild mustang suit... would it be culturally insensitive or otherwise not okay to make a "Crazy Horse" tribute via a horse suit with a Native American theme and a wild-eyed crazy expression??? I feel like it would be a fun and clever but politically incorrect idea...
Because in my imagination, unicorns are no horses! They are a mix of deer, goat and magic.
My computer broke again for a half week and i had plenty time seriously working in my shop Hubby wanted me to make a unicorn in 2 days and here i am after 1.5 days. Some paint details on the eyes and mouth need to be completed as well as the berry collar.
I challenged myself with this project - kind of faux taxidermy. I used a taxidermy fawn mannikin and our highest quality "white beaver" faux fur. Taxidermy glass eyes, epoxy sculpted details and airbrushing complete this unicorn. Want it for christmas? It will be up for grabs in our store tomorrow! Stay tuned!
