Good day, Merchants.
I feel like I haven't had my head on straight lately, with so much going on. I may have lost my temper toward some of you for one reason or another, so I do apologize. I'm a little less... on edge, one might say. That isn't to say things have gotten any better... but we all have a living to make, and it really won't do for me to be scolding you all for this and that while we work toward that goal, hm? Right-o, then!
Despite these odd times, we have plenty being asked of us, the most pressing of which coming straight from the library of Draclugia Castle. I cannot say Lexy is the oddest Pokemon I've met from that... 'interesting' residence, though he could use a bit of the cheer the lot of you tend to have. Not that I can blame him, living in servitude to such a... well, let us not get into that. Goodness knows that ghostly fellow may transcend time itself to strangle me again over my thoughts on the castle's Lady.
But I digr

Genuine Scares in MoviesI'm a horror aficionado in the same way I am a movie aficionado.Genuine Scares in Movies2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I like the concept of 'horror' more often then I like horror films and I study the art and artifice of the medium more often then I pay patronage to it. Maybe this makes me a snob but I personally think its allowed me to delve pretty deep into what makes a horror movie work and why, wonder of wonders, earlier horror films and a handful of modern ones get it right where so many get it so very wrong.
Horror here is a word I'll use to mean the psychological sensibility: not so much the genre stereotypes. This means that horror will NOT be used as a synonym for movies with gore, movies with psycho killers, movies with demons, movies with violins on the soundtrack, or movies made by self proclaimed horror movie directors.
Horror to me means thrilling, not merely shocking. Stirring, not merely sickening.
Horror to me means atmosphere over slick visuals and it means suspense over telegraphed moments so painfully tailored to be h

Many times a friend or a deviant has said to me, "oh I could never fold origami, I'm not gifted that way", but it's just not true! As part of projecteducate's Artisan Crafts week, I'm going to show you how simple it is to find and fold something gorgeous and to present it well to your internet audience.
With just a little inspiration and a bit of patience, ANY one of us could fold something absolutely lovely. So what are you waiting for?? Let's get folding!
1) BE INSPIRED
First of all, you need to figure out what you want to fold. You need inspiration from looking at gorgeous origami, from admiring nature and the world around, or maybe it'll just hit you like a random lightning bolt. We are super privileged to have many experienced and skilful origamists on dA, many who create their own models from scratch. From persona

As all of you should know, August 13th is a very special day for lefties everywhere! It is Left Handers’ Day – a day where we can all get together freely and talk about our scissor preferences, smudged writing and how many times we’ve heard: “Hey! Are you left-handed?”.
Of course, we can do that any day. But on the 13th of August we have an awesome excuse. And once again, we’re providing you with the perfect excuse to put on that thinking cap and grab your art supplies to create something awesome f

Hello to those who are reading! My name’s Andy and I have written this in hopes of finding some good, honest, and true law-abiding pokemon who’re willing to help in Gambitville. Gambitville is a wonderful desert town, a wonderful home for pokemon of all ages and creeds, young and small, old and tall!… Or at least it would be if all the dang no-good criminals were wrung out and hung to dry. You see, Jury, our kind and dutiful mayor, has been out of commission for a good while, and during that time it seems that every villain, crook, and two-bit thief just waltzed along into our quaint little desert town. Now that Jury’s awake again he is quite literally FUMING!
…and that’s where you step in!
I have heard that there are those of you out there who belong to different groups, like “mercenaries”, “shopkeeps”, “helpers” or some other such nonsense; I have been told by our wonderful mayor to allow anyon

Solutions to Popular ClichesWe all know they exist, and they usually exist for a reason: to serve as the lynchpin of a plot that is either too lazy or the writer too unversed in films and stories to realize how stock they've made their production without intending to. Stereotypical plot turns, unrealistic but procedural character reactions, suspension of logic for the sake of following in well worn footsteps: none of this necessarily means the final product won't be entertaining, don't get me wrong. But what can't be denied is that cliches cheapen a product and make story lines feel less organic and more contrived.Solutions to Popular Cliches8 months ago in Personal More Like This
However in addition to pointing out a few of these classics and trying briefly to explain why they might be used, I'd also like to provide my suggestions for how to get around these road bumps in plot structure and accomplish what these placeholders are meant to, but perhaps accomplish it in a much more interesting way in service to the story, not detrimental to it.
Plot and story are not the same thin

Secondly, here's a little more about me being critical about stories and such, but hopefully its directed at improving the overall quality of storytelling and the satisfaction of fiction.
Case in point: the almost inevitable Final Confrontation.
SPOILERS for various films may be incoming given the journal's nature. Fair warning.
The hero and villain have worked their way through trials and tribulations aplenty on both sides (setbacks for the villain more likely, obstacles for the hero) and now the opposite numbers square off at last for the epic showdown. The arena can be anything from a courtroom to a battlefield. The contestants can be elite squad, ordinary individuals, entire armies, or mano-a-mano between our hero or anti-hero and the big boss of the opposition.
This is more of a problem then it first appears. What people don't consider often enough is that stories BEFORE there's have been told so the audience of this

What many of you do not know is that I am a certifiable Dragon Nut! I have Dragon stickers on my vehicle! Yes I am one of them! Now Red Coat is the guy who wins and deserves all the awards and medals and praise his amazing work ethic and dedication deserves he is nothing but EPIC WIN! So it might be a while before the next sale. I'm working on a few personal projects at the moment, as well as dinking around with designs for some zazzle stuff. There will be lots of cute little drawings like Baby Ember in various colors for pins and keychains and stuff, along with some other interesting designs for various items. It's really funny watching Matty observe me working in Photoshop on this stuff. He's a graphic designer so he uses it everyday, and is basically a photoshop expert, so to him I do everything slow or the hard way. You can just see his fingers itching to steal the mouse away from me so he can do it better. I actually used to be very good at photoshop back in college, but have since forgotten most of the tricks. I just use the paint brush to draw things occasionally, or some very simple setting
Do You Want a Franchise, or a World? There's a difference between a franchise and a fictive universe.Do You Want a Franchise, or a World?7 months ago in Personal More Like This
When George Lucas dreamed up Star Wars, when Tolkien devised Lord of the Rings, when Roddenberry conjured Star Trek, and numerous other visionaries lay pen to paper or started the reel on a camera their initial thought was not 'I can probably make a lot of money off of this idea by selling merchandise.'
To clarify Lucas thought his strange throwback experiment movie would make so little money he bet Steven Spielberg a portion of the merchandising rights to his impending flop in favor of an investment in the clearly about to be more successful film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. As for Tolkien he barely intended to publish his private writings made principally to test out a language he had invented, and Roddenberry thought after his original Trek show was canceled following lackluster initial impact that that was the end of that.
To each of these people the world was crafted before the franchise because the fran
Nesting! And a sick ratty :(Holy crap you guys. I've always heard mothers-to-be get this urge to "nest" and I thought it was kind of silly. I mean sure, who doesn't want to get things clean and organized before their life is thrown into baby chaos? That makes sense. "Nesting" just sounds so...intense, I guess? But holy bananas, it is a real thing! And it just hit me like a brick wall this past week. I mean I NEED to clean everything. Every. Single. Thing. I'd sit down in the studio to work, and find myself tidying it up instead. Doh! Focus Becca, get back to work! Wander out to the kitchen for a drink, and magically find myself sweeping and vaccuuming and organizing everything. Then it just keeps going. I'm like a woman possessed! Clean ALL the things! Here at the house for me it's the second day of my three week long housesitting, and yesterday I spent some time looking for movies on Netflix so that I'll have some new features coming down the pike for the long, cold nights ahead.
However a majority of the films categorized as fantasy/sci-fi I had either already seen or were barely of enough value to consider spending money to rent. Certainly I'm considerably jaded and a touch overexposed to all nearly things genre, but when the majority of reviews in EVERY instance of modern day and even classic genre films were universally negative it gave me pause.

Female Roles or Sterotypes? For all its hoopla about racism and sexism, Hollywood is without exception the single biggest practitioner of both.Female Roles or Sterotypes?9 months ago in Personal More Like This
Why are there not very many minority actors? Not because people don't want to see them, but because Hollywood won't hire them. Why are there so few woman directors or actors playing anything but pretty distractions and generic roles? Not because there's no public demand for better female characters, but because Hollywood sees no reason to spend the time writing any.
Female roles especially fall into one of two subgroups most often...
1: The superfluous, amiable damsel in distress there to look pretty and be rescued.
2: The grouchy, superior, businesslike, alpha-female archetype.
And these two can blend or even replace one another as time goes, but this seems to be the norm unfortunately in most major productions. Woman it seems can't play characters, can be PEOPLE they have to represent something, either a male or female power fantasy. Men sometimes have this

The Enemy of my EnemyGood versus Evil. The Enemy of my Enemy2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The idea is as old as humanity itself and still the most popular theme (at least in theory) in universal storytelling. Initially the moral concept was the ideals of justice and mercy in contention with the vices of selfishness and cruelty. In our earliest legends these two perspectives are usually defined by metaphorical constructs: the ravening dragon as a symbol of evil and the stalwart warrior rescuing the princess representing good. It's a simplistic approach to a fundamental concern, but introduces the conflict between good and bad influences early in life and at least at first encouraged one and rebuked the other.
Nowadays good and evil are not so much ideals as they are disparate factions. The evil East India Trading Company is fighting the good Pirates in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Why is the trading company evil despite them keeping order and the pirates good despite the fact they murder and pillage?
Because the films have designated one side good a
