Monster Me Up Contest - Winners Announced! So pleased to share with all the Winners - Thanks for all the creepy, errr...rather CREATIVE entries - our judges are cross eyed, hoarse and not speaking to one another after several days of debate. They may never recover. Enough though - here are the results!Monster Me Up Contest - Winners Announced!1 year ago in Personal More Like This
The judging process:
All entries were numbered and put in a dropbox. A point system was ascribed and a survey via MailChimp used to vote. Two members of Novel Expression tabulated votes independently, entering resulted in a spread sheet, then swapped spread sheets to check results.

It looks better in real life...
Scanner ate the colors!
The photo does not do justice.
How many times you have read or typed yourself such notes in artist’s comments, under traditional artworks?
You’re not alone; digitizing our drawings, paintings, sculptures and other traditional, hand-made artworks can be tricky. Of course the work is never exactly same when changing it from a concrete object to a picture on a screen, but a lot can be done to achieve as representative result as possible!
This is the first part of a basic guide how to make your traditional artworks look appealing when presenting them in the Internet. This is not about changing or manipulating your traditional artwork to something it is not originally, but helping you to make it look as good on a screen as it is in real life.
This Part 1 introduces scanning and photographing tips.
The Part 2 advices how to edit the scanned/photographed artworks.
This guide is meant es
Challenging Yourself to Become a Better ArtistLike others here, I get asked a lot of questions about my art, my process, techniques, and my inspiration. One of the questions I get asked that makes me both smile and laugh is, "How did you get so good?" Half the time it's a rhetorical question, and the other half is people genuinely wanting to know how to get better at art.Challenging Yourself to Become a Better Artist6 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The answer is deceptively simple: I challenge myself and maintain a positive attitude.
RISE TO THE CHALLENGE
Now you might say, "Well, everything I do is a challenge, I'm not that good yet." But that's not what I mean. Of course getting better at art is challenging, and even when you're what others might consider a master, art never stops being a challenge.
But what I'm talking about is specifically setting goals for yourself and taking on projects that you KNOW are going to make you struggle. The projects that you KNOW are going to make you want to give up and do something else.
I find that a lot of people sort of stick to a specific niche and never reall

Free Stock and Resources outside dAPlease fave if you find this journal usefulFree Stock and Resources outside dA2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I updated and added new stuff on: March 9th 2014
before I started doing my own art, I was an avid incredimail email- stationary creator.
(All legal always with freeware, according to terms, with written permission etc)
For that reason I have collected a massive bunch of pages with stockphotos (free for profit reasons)
free & shareware fonts, plugin pages and so on.
I thought that it might be as useful for creating art for some of you.
The quality and resolution of the images varies so check yourself
I met several people who don't know much free stock outside dA..
although dA holds fantastic stock photographers and artists too! one can never have enough choice

As I am lately back with some manips, I thought its about time
to make a journal with some of my favourite stockers
Why they are my favourite? Well they are for several reasons!
Each of those who will be listed here, will have:
good to excellent quality,
Sizes which are usable beyond webpics shortest side at least 1200,
(that excludes cutouts, jewellery or any stuff you wouldn't need as primary object in your manip and seamless patterns)
Rules that allow commercial usage (at least on dA and on request for outside dA)
Rules that allow outside dA usage without being forced to slap the stockers name ON the artwork itself.
or Rules that are fully unrestricted
This includes stock-providers that take a few points for their stock, because I rather pay a few points if the TOU's & quality are grea
Llama FAQs and Information● What exactly is a llama badge?Llama FAQs and Information3 years ago in Personal More Like This
A llama badge is basically exactly as it sounds, it is a deviantART badge in the form of a llama.
● How many people can I give a llama badge to?
You can give out as many llama badges as you wish, but you can only give one per deviant.
This means once you give a deviant a llama badge, you cannot give them a second one.
● How do I get llama badges?
The best way is to be an active member of deviantART. The more you interact with others, the higher the chance you will receive a llama badge.
You can also post comments here on our group page requesting llama badges as well or use llamatrade to buy llama badges.
● What is the purpose of llama badges?
They are just something fun for the deviantART community. They are a way to thank someone for a favorite, comment, critique, pageview,
and whatever else you can imagine! Th

10 Easy Ways to Up Your Color GameTraditional Art Week10 Easy Ways to Up Your Color Game10 months ago in Personal More Like This
Here are 10 ideas to try to have more fun with color in your art! All the examples used are works by the members of the Deviant Art community.
1. Make your OWN color wheel.
Use only primary red, yellow, and blue to create all the shades by color blending or using premade colors depending on your preference. Using your own medium to create your own reference will give you a realistic spectrum of the colors you have at your disposal.
2. Create contrast with complements.
Opposites attract attention! Red/Green, Orange/Blue, Purple/Gold. There's a reason that complementary colors are often seen on logos, sports jerseys and holiday decor. For an easy, and quick way to grab attention use two colors directly

SORRY IT'S TAKING SO LONG!! USPS raised their rates for people outside the US and I have to make sure I have shipping for everyone in one action. Thank you everyone for your patience. I love you all. (it's true)
I wasn't able to get rid of these books as easily as I was thinking...so I still have them.
I'm running low on the couples books but I still have plenty of the rest.
I'm open back up and would really like to sell them all. Please! 8D
They're super useful and I really want to see people use them. So stop by the store!
The USPS did away with surface to air shipping overseas. That means I, unfortunately, have to charge an additional $40+ to anyone outside of the US (except for Canada, I think). So be aware of that.
How is everyone doing, btw? ...school started and everything else!

Necks for anatomy practiceI need to see loads of examples before I can get something. So here's loads of necks doing the weird necky things that necks do.Necks for anatomy practice3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
To get what's going on with the tangle of muscles and tendons catch necks in action. Watch people in cafes. Pause TV. (Buffy the Vampire Slayer has particularly good lighting for drawing.) Then check out how cartoonists simplify the confusion. Maybe even check out some anatomy to see what's going on beneath the skin. Each gives you a different piece of the puzzle.
Organized by where the head is relative to the shoulders, then by where the camera is. So each group should have the same muscles and tendons bulging out. (If you post drawings from any stock here, do check the stock artist's rules.) NOTE: Images marked with ⬅ are NOT stock. Use them for practice, but don't post. (There's only one image marked since there's so much great stock.)
If you stumble across good neck stock, especially with good shadows, I'd l

I think most of you know Bernd Schneider's extraordinary site, Ex Astris Scientia . Recently, he has posted a message about the number of his visitors declining. I feel saddened, as I am an old fan of his work, from my earliest days as a Trekkie from a decade ago.
I usually don't do such things, but now I'm asking you to spread the word: get yourselves to Ex Astris Scientia, follow the site on the social networks. Bernd deserves support from us, from all of us. Now the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many, and we are those many, regardless of our Trek preferences. TOS purists, Next Genners, Abramsverse fans, I call out to each and every one of you, spread the world, let's save Ex Astris Scientia from becoming abandoned amidst the torrential waves of the information superhighway!

Find out for yourself what you really want to do with art, there are so many different professions.
Graphic designer, Concept artist (mobile and high end), Illustrator of bookcovers, or card games.
Once you can make your pick, or at least pick 1 or 2 you must find the best work on the market in those fields.
Find out what makes the best art of your favorite field the best art. What do they paint? How do they paint it? With knowing this you can find out about the things you need to study.
The most basic study aims are the following:
What forms of light art there? And how does it influence things?
The book Color and Light by James Gurney will give you a lot of insight.
How do you paint shapes? How do you light them the right way?

The Rules: Special Extended EditionAfter over a year of providing stock, I thought it was about time I clarified a few things about my rules and what they mean. Clearly, some people still don't understand. (Or wish to read them? But that's a completely different problem altogether) This journal is intended to spell out every situation I can think of to help people understand them a bit more. In the past three days, I have found 10 deviations from artists who have either not notified me of stock use, or did not credit. The Rules: Special Extended Edition8 years ago in Personal More Like This
The Rules of Stock use for Traditional Purposes and Photomanipulation purposes are quite different, actually. Those traditional artists who have noted me with questions regarding stock use for references have discovered that the rules are a bit more lax on them. I shall splain.
The rules for photomanipulation have been updated as of August 5th, 2009 to the following:
The most important rule of them all is simple: Use, Credit in your artists description and LINK ME

"The Spanish-American War was a conflict between Spain and the United States. It came as a result of American intervention during Cuba's rebellion against Spain. America did not approve of Spain's methods to crush the revolution, and even back then felt like to police of the world. So one day they went up to Spain and said "Oh mai god. Stahp.". Spain was like "LOL NOPE" and continued to treat the Cuban people like shit. Then they decided to blow up a US ship because YOLO. America sat pissed off as Spain proceeded to do a lot of dick-waving, which included calling Americans nasty toads and President McKinley a weak little pushover. However, it was a bright day for American political cartoonists. Anyway, America finally got fed up and said "YOU WANT TO GO TO WAR?! FINE, COME AT ME BRO!" and Spain was like "We don't want a war. We just want you to fuck off... but we'd still totally beat you. I mean, i

Harley Quinn Contest
In case you haven't heard yet, DC is holding a contest to hire fresh young artists to help work on the new Harley Quinn series. http://www.dccomics.com/node/305151 This is fantastic news for a lot of artists, as "breaking in" to the big comic book companies can be extraordinarily difficult to do and this helps level the playing field. However, the way they've chosen to hold the contest is to have everyone submit 4 illustrations based on 4 separate scripts... all of which depict Harley Quinn as suicidal and trying to kill herself "comically."
Now first off, I get the fact that Harley Quinn is part of the "Suicide Squad," and that these illustrations are likely poking fun at that. However I feel that fact falls on it's face since the term "Suicide Squa
