Design tips: Typography Avoid the use of the font Optima, particularly for luxury or similarly "fancy" types of clients. It looks generally dated and plain.Design tips: Typography3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Try not to pair different sans-serif fonts (ex: Arial and Helvetica), but if you do, do not use fonts that are similar. The key is to use fonts that are distinctly different, such as a condensed sans for headlines and regular sans like Helvetica or Verdana for subheads or body copy. If you use two that are similar, it will look like you mistakenly didn't update all your text with the same font.
If you want to pair a serif font with a sans-serif or vice versa, there are 3 options you should use to make your decisions:
1) Select fonts made by the same typographer, or
2) Select fonts made around the same time period, or
3) Select fonts with similarly shaped characters
(Note: The reason why the rules may be different between pairing serif/sans-serif fonts and pairing two sans-serif fonts is that serif fonts have ex

Some of you might remember my previous journal with a list of brush-sets I've tried out and found very useful. Today I bring you more!
And honestly I must say that those few new sets contain absolutely everything one needs (I won't join the discussion that a real artist needs only one brush, because it's absolutely true but makes things much less fun and fancy ;))
After downloading and installing a brush set always test every single brush - play with it on a clear canvas, test it in different colours and using different strokes. Pick only those which you like and know how to use, delete the others or at least move them to the bottom of the list, leaving the most often used at the top.

There are a plethora of brushes available to you on photoshop. This guide will explain different brush settings, as well as how to install different brush packs here on deviantART. This guide is for pressure sensitive pen tablets. It is going to be much easier to do things with a tablet. Ones by Wacom are good, and you can get a bamboo for under 99$ USD.
Basic Brushes in Photoshop
It's important to stick with default ones to learn all the settings. You can do so many things with the hard round brush.
Bring up your brush palette in one of the following ways. (note I am in CS3, so the icons will look much older, but same thing. )

Resources For Artists: Colour Scheme ToolsColour Scheme ToolsResources For Artists: Colour Scheme Tools3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
So I have been thinking of doing a few articles apart from feature articles to link some useful resources for artists and this is the first one of these. While this is a mini one, it's helped me a lot on several occassions.
Sometimes it gets confusing to decide which colours to choose. "'Should I go with a turquoise and a gold for the face? What about the room? I was going for a chic cool modern palette which is minimalistic!" Surely, a lot of us have gone through those decisive moments. Below are some colour scheme tools that would help you with your colour scheme choices. Click the titles or the links in asterisk to go to the following sites.

How to Run Paint Tool Sai on a MacEDIT EDIT: Added a small section on pen pressure. How to Run Paint Tool Sai on a Mac2 years ago in Personal More Like This
EDIT: More programs added at the end! For those who would rather try something other than Parallels.
Since people were asking about it on my most recent deviation, here's how I managed to run Paint Tool Sai on my system with pen pressure. This is pretty much all taken from various tutorials, so if you read something you don't understand here, just google around and you should be able to find an answer. Also, I'm sure there are easier/different ways, but this is how it works for me.
Software/hardware used: Paint Tool Sai, Windows XP iso, Parallels Desktop 8, 2012 Macbook Pro. I initially used this with my Intuos tablet but it works with a Cintiq as well.
First, you must acquire both a copy of Parallels and either a Windows disc or ISO. I used Windows XP Professional since it seemed most lightweight to me (and I wouldn't be using it for anything other than drawing.)
Install Parallels. Once that's loaded up, select "In

Brushes for download!I have decided to share my Photoshop brushes with the world. This particular set has elements from the brushes of Whit Brachna, Maciej Kuciara, Sergey Kolesov, Algenpfleger, Danny Luvisi, inetgrafx and a bunch of other great artists, as well as some of my own custom brushes! You'll definitely recognize many of them if you are familiar with the usual concept art brushes, but this selection works really well for me.Brushes for download!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
