Why equipment doesn't matter all that muchOh god, I wanted that Wacom Intuos tablet so badly. Why equipment doesn't matter all that much9 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I was 16 years old at that time. I had already seen so much amazing art on the internet for the last few years. Digital art, to be precise. And I wanted to be able to do that as well. I had a computer, I had installed Photoshop. The only thing that I didn't have was money. I was completely broke. Note: it's 2004 we're talking about, here. 10 years ago (yeah, I'm old) when computers still costed a fortune and one almost had to take an extra mortgage in order to be able to pay a tablet. Back then, the average Intuos tablet costed as much as the average computer; a whole damn lot of money.
I had already been drawing for years, back then.
I occasionally scanned my drawings. But as my scanner was utter crap (all scanners where, back then), my preferred medium was pencil (that never does well with scanners) and I wasn't that good with adjusting colors in Photoshop... most of my drawings ended in utter digital disappointment.

How to get feedback on dAWe all joined this site, more or less for this reason, to get feedback on our art. The whole point of submitting art online is for people to see it and hear what they think about it.How to get feedback on dA7 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Now there are a lot of deviants out there who get little to no feedback and as a result ask the people who faved their art to comment or go to random people on dA and ask for them to look at their art or comment in the hopes that the person will be kind enough to return the favor.
A message to the people who do that, you're doing it all wrong.
Sure, if you ask 20 people who faved your drawing what they thought about it, you might get 1 or 2 answers, but in return, you'll be ignored by say 10 people and you'll annoy 8 people. I get these comments and i'm telling you, begging for feedback is not the way to go, if someone didn't comment when they fave, what makes you think forcing their hand is the right way to go?
A fav is a compliment, take it a it is. Not everyone has

The rules, there's only one really:
~Just favorite the journal because that's how you'll be assigned a number.
You do NOT need to watch me. I do like llamas though. So if you get a chance llama me and I'll llama you back. You do NOT have to llama me to get a place for the giveaway. I just want that to be clear. Also you do NOT need to make a journal about this giveaway either.
The deadline will be February 1, 2014 at 11:59 p.M. Eastern Time US and I will be choosing the winner the following day using random.org.
Good Luck Everyone!
Comments and Commenting We all know that getting the exposure you want for your work is a tough endeavour here on dA. Despite the wonders of the site, the simple fact of the matter is that comments are hard to come by these days.Comments and Commenting1 year ago in Literature Features More Like This
There may be many reasons for this - lack of time on the part of many browsers, lack of interest, or simply: not knowing what to say. We've all been there at one point (some of us more than others), and it presented the question - "what is it that writers want out of a comment?"
The only way to find the answer to this question was to set up a poll - which received an amazing response from the lit community, and with your help, this editorial will highlight some points that will aid in leaving some insightful and appreciated comments.
First and foremost - Read.
Many of the writers on dA want f
Redesign a character contest! If there's something we love about fan art is how artists take artistic liberties and portray characters in their own style and different scenarios we wouldn't see otherwise. Some people will say that fan art is unoriginal, but from experience there's a lot of creativity involved when it comes to depicting your favourite characters in a different light, deviating from the way they were designed by their creators.Redesign a character contest!2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
This is why, inspired by the Pokedesign Challenge by *CrazyRatty on Tumblr, your friendly neighborhood Fan Art CVs decided to host a fun little contest for you!
How it works:
Pick a character from any fandom you like.
Come up with at least 3 different re-designs for them and put them in a single image.

However, this giveaway is very special- and very sad.
A few weeks ago, I heard about the touching story of whisperwings, which inspired me to create a brand new arts endowment to help get smaller artists known- please read the full story here:
And there's more.

This group's purpose is simple: Great artists, some with amazing art- don't get noticed because they have little to no watchers. I want to change that. And you can help. How?
An Interview with Theresatheresahelmer has been on deviantART for just over three years and has very much been in the public eye with regards to Still Life Photography over the past months with her fantastic culinary captures. 1) Hi Theresa! Tell us a bit about yourself and how you find yourself undertaking Photography.
First, I am happy to have this opportunity to share with you my true self. My name is Theresa Helmer and I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. For years and years, my profession was international import trade law compliance, specialized in rules and regulations, but these days i regard myself a food stylist and food photographer. What attracts me to food photography? To put it in the simplest term - I love food. In the beginning, i took on photography as a hobby only, slowly but surely i am now developing my hobby into a small

Since I don't want to just draw my OCs and fanarts, I thought of opening requests.
This is some kind of endless raffle (until I close this journal). If you want to participate:
1. Fave this journal to get your entry number.
2. Leave a comment with references to your OC. If you have more than one, you can link them all incase I get your number again.
You need to do both!
It's not neccessary to be my watcher to participate. I would very welcome it if you could advertise this journal (via own journal or poll or something >w<) because I would love to draw as many different characters as possible ;v; <3
I want to thank everyone in advance who participates in this <3 Most requests will end up as halfbody monochrome sketches I think ovo

Tuesday Tips #2 Scanning your ArtworkWelcome to the second edition of Tuesday Tips where we at :iconrising-artists: try to make your deviant life easierTuesday Tips #2 Scanning your Artwork1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Today we will be discussing how to scan and post edit your artwork.
Many times a camera won't pick up all the minuscule details in your piece, but a scanner will.
However, often times scanners come with one or two major drawbacks
-The scanning process looses a lot of color quality
-Your artwork is too big for your scanner bed.
So, lets talk about these two problems and how we can solve them.
What you need:
Photo Editing software (GIMP, PS, CS+..etc)
If your artwork is bigger than your scanner bed, never fear, solutions are here! While I figured out this trick on my own, some deviants figured it out long before I did and made AWESOME tutorials that cover every point I wanted to share with you all.
If your wondering about images that are larger then the one used in the tutorial, check out how I sca

The Myth of TalentThe Myth of TalentThe Myth of Talent5 months ago in Art Features More Like This
If there's one comment that is made more often than any other on any decent piece of artwork it's "you're so talented."
It's also the one [positively intended] comment I've seen the most artists bristle at, sometimes even retort. For some of us, it's a pet hate. Why?
We know it's meant as a compliment, so we smile and say thank you and try to resist the urge to insist that 'talent' is the biggest myth there is. Not only is it a myth, at its worst the use of the word is potentially destructive to the artistic community.
What's so wrong with the word 'talent'?
You might not realise it, but calling someone talented can often feel like a backhanded compliment. No skilled artist woke up one day just being able to do what they can do. We were all born completely unable to do just about anything useful. But through daily practise we learned how to use our limbs for motility, our voices for words, an
The common misconceptionWhen giving workshops last weekend, I was confronted with something at least remarkable. The common misconception5 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I had a random chat with a girl that apparently knew me from DeviantArt. We a friendly conversation about art such. It wasn't that strange, until she concluded her message with.
"It's nice talking to you. I always wanted to know what you were like. You know... since you draw so well"
And I was like... "Huh? What?"
Some people see me as a talented writer or artist, others (including myself) raise the bar even higher.
But regardless of what you see as skilled or not, I don't think there's such a thing as 'them' and 'us' in the art world. It's too small of a world. We're too alike. And I think most of us aren't exactly prone to living a celebrity lifestyle anyway. Bitches & bling don't match well with the usually quiet lifestyle an artist prefers.
When I started doing painting, I looked up to many of the lo
